Here is a summary of his settings: 4K for normal shooting. 1080 120fps for slow motion. All scaled to 1440p. Mostly use continuous AF and zone as the focus area. Manual focus when required. Auto ISO with a limit of 6400 with an exposure comp of 0. You may want to use an exposure comp of up to +2 if using S-Log. Gamma: Cine4 (or Cine1) Colour Mode: Cinema Detail at -4 (in 1080p mode) Detail Adjust: Limit 7, Crispning 7, B/W Balance Type3 Never use AWB, set it manually or to a preset. You want it to look closest to how your final graded image will look.
Great explanation, I have a question though! I'm shooting manual (using vintage lenses), I set the aperture and the shutter speed manually, I want to have the Auto ISO option, however when I'm recording the exposure isn't locked, if I move, e.g., from inside my house to the outside the ISO lowers to adjust the exposure however I want it locked (in this case i would want it over exposed when stepping out), is it possible ? Thanks
You just take off auto ISO then man haha. It's compensating for it because it figures you want to keep going so just set your ISO at where it should be for the indoor shots and then step outside, should work!
First of all I want to say BIG THANK YOU! You saved me from selling my a6500 camera yesterday... When I saw your videos I understood that there is a chance for me to succeed. I had those problems with the profiles and didn't know how to combine it for good video grading. Second I'm so in love with your luts that inspired me to learn some techniques for future edits. You become my numero UNO vlogger with HIGH NOTIFICATION rate bell. Thank you once more my friend!
Christian Mate Grab, you are going to do big things. The talent with your shots and vision is unreal. Keep it up and thanks for the information! That Zhiyun Crane gimbal thoooooooooo !!
You rock! I have learned so much from you. Buying a luts pack today from you. Thank you so much for this! I just start manufacturing in China for my clients. Now I can do professional videos out here. I spent the entire day yesterday studying what you taught!
hope to see more of these type of tutorials! Thx you are are one of the only photographers i can find on youtube that shoots sony! So, I gotta say you are the best at it by far! hope to see more videos! :D
So I've checked endless videos on the a6300 because I'm currently saving up for it, and it seems to give a very washed out/hazy kind of look BUT not in a bad way at all, I absolutely love this style! And if you want you can still edit that out afterwards, but really, it looks really distinct and I absolutely bloody love it!!
Hey Christian! I'm leaving a quick tip you may find helpful cause of your settings. When you said you can't access to the audio level rec control, set this up in a custom button, I feel like the preset one on the left of the wheel (Display mode) is a bit useless for filmmaking, even for pictures cause you could easily change the Display mode using the Fn button. I hope this is helpful for you! Keep it up man!
This was the video that I was looking forward to for so long. Thank you so much for delivering. I really appreciate all your work. Truly amazing and it's exactly how I want to express myself through my own videos. Cheers Christian.
Try multi, you gonna be overexposed if you use center when you vlog. Caucasians will be under-exposed, and African-Americans over-exposed. I'm a subscriber to your channel by the way. Thanks for the great contents.
Excellent review! The working menu on my Sony Nex 7 is so much quicker and practical (as opposed to it's setup menu). Even the location of the movie button is better. I wish Sony would bring that setup menu style back on the next generation of this camera. Anyone who has used the Nex 7 will understand. Still a great camera!
If everything goes alright I'll have my a6300 on Thursday! Very helpful video, will definitely need help with the menus later and here I got it, thanks man!
Big thanks for the review.... you put lots of time choosing songs... i'm sure... mood is paramount. Got yourself a new subscriber ;) from Montréal Canada.
Does changing the picture profile affect the way photos come out as well or only video? I feel like the photos look so flat compared to my nikon out of the camera
You can adjust your levels and get correct framing before pressing the record button in the custom modes if you set up your camera in video mode and store it to one of the custom modes from there. The camera recalls the same mode you were in, when you store your settings. It also remembers the specific video mode (P/A/S/M) which you can choose via the Fn button by default. ;)
Hi I am new to Sony cameras. Is XAVC or AVCHD are color gradable in Resolve? (I mean are these formats are as flexible as S-Log format?. What is the cheapest Sony which can record S-log? Thank you very much
Hello! How are you! One question: to record video as video clips between these two options, sony alpha a6300 and panasonic lumix gh4, which one would you choose and why? Keep in mind that you need good bokeh, cinematographic takes and above all that you can edit the video to have the best quality of video offered by these two cameras. thank you very much.
how did you shoot those smooth video footages with these Sony devices? Don't tell me a6500 has IBIS because it grants unnoticeable amount image stabilization
Hi, you say you are shooting with the kit lens, but on the display it says you're shooting with f2.0 (kitlens is F3.5-F5.6). Also you seem to shoot at 1/500 shutter speed. Do you not bother the 180 shutter speed 'rule'? Do you increase shutter speed in stead of working with a variable ND filter, is that it? Thanks
Hey, thanks for this video. I had a question about the A6500 and was wondering if you can help... Do you have to go into setting all the time to adjust white balance and exposure while you are filming, or is there some kind of wheel in the camera that can help with that while you are filming?
What about shutter speed? Do you stick with the generic rule of double the FPS? I did that and i was always over exposed at f1.4. Also, are you constantly changing white balance?
Hey Christian, thanks for making this video. Just in time for my trip to Japan. I was wondering how you were able to track focus on the guys heard at 5:15 when you were walking towards him. Did you use Center Lock-On AF or some other auto-focusing setting?
thanks for sharing this video, it really helped with my decision to purchase! I do have a question, I am seeing very beautiful videography shot with the a6300 BUT it's all in either slow motion or very slow movement. Will the picture (for video) still capture fast movements well like running or dancing?
mate , your video inspire me always. I wish i could meet you in person and learn to shoot like you. Good luck with your future project.Stay awesome as always. Broda
great info thanks! I shoot a lot of high action stuff and its always moving so an autofocus that follows the subject is important to me. On the clip at 5:00-5:03 where the focus changed as you moved and ended with the subject in focus, was that all auto or was that being focused manually?
Excuse my naivety, I don't have this camera yet but, with regard to the picture profile, how much will these settings effect post production if you recorded in XAVC or AVCHD? Aren't these a more raw format?
Question! (Final Cut Pro X & a6500) In order to upload a video in 1440p, would I have to record in 4K then downscale to 2K in post in the project settings? And I'm guessing 24p or 30p both work in this case. Thanks!
So you shoot in 3:2 to use the full sensor size and then crop into 16:9? I'm asking because for both foto and video I'm always torn about using either of the two. 16:9 is what most people watches the footage on, on the other hand 3:2 uses the full sensor(thus quality) and it's super easy to crop both photos and videos in that format. So is this your reasoning behind 3:2 or you shoot both(and why)?
Hi Chris, i love your chancel! Also this video is so important for beginners like me. I've bought the sony a6300 a few weeks ago and still have trouble with one special thing... i can't find a way to change the shutterspeed when i'm in one of the two memory programms. it always says that "programmautomatik" (in german, verstehste..) blocks this function. Is there a way to set the shutterspeed manually for videomode in the memoryprogramms? Best regards and keep on doin stuff like this!
I feel encouraged by your video to improve my basic video skills . Your style is appealing and inspiring as well. You have taste in terms of how you combine colors and music. And you have my abo now. 🙂
Hi, can you get the same results in a6500? All videos that i see in a6300 i like better then a6500. Its more "soft" , i cant explain. The color seams to be more pleasent.
Great videos man! Big fan here. I have one question. How do you push the grade and avoid chroma/digital noise? I seem to be having some trouble with the a6500 and LUTS. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks.
Hii chriss.. is there any chance to get your color with s-slog, but using your LUT, i mean i already shoot my footages with s-log (over 2 expose) i want my color like in ur video by using ur LUT or do maybe u have LUT for S-log2?? Thanks be 4
I need an answer. Does a 1080p video scaled down from a 4k look better than a video shot at 1080p? Since most of the audience on youtube are using smartphone and pc, rarely anyone watching with a 4k TV, isit necessary to film in 4k?
If you're located in Southern California, someone is selling brand new units of the Sony a6600 for $1080 no tax. I was so happy I bought 2 and thought I'd share. Just go on OfferUp and search for a6600!
How do i go about upscaling 1080 and downscaling 4K to a 2560 x 1440 timeline? Is it as simple as setting the sequence settings to 1440p and dropping in 4K and 1080 footage in the timeline?
How can I create that kind of visual, in his intro? It's extremely HD, but it's got like jittery effect/look to it. I would love some answers/feedback if my question makes any sense.
Hey Chris You normally shoot sony a6300 with sigma 30 f1.4 handheld right ?? I tried the same but video is very shaky even with max possible efforts. Do you use any additional software for stabilization. Please guide me. Thanx
Will give it a try. Can you suggest if there are any softwares which stabilizes footages. Have tried warping in After Effects recently for some time-lapse shots. Thanx
Dude you don't need software if you run your camera in high Frame rates and slow down the footage. If you plan on running vlogs and stuff with audio tracks like people talking then obviously you will need a gimbal to have super stable footage. If you just plan on making videos that are cinematic w/nobody speaking in them then just run the 120 FPS setup slow down the footage or you could invest in a camera like the a6500 with IBIS - In body stabilization.
hey I noticed you have the same problem I have... when I go under xavc s HD and then go under the framerates it only gives me 100p at 100mb, but the a6300 is advertised to do 120 fps... what am I doing wrong why cant I get those extra 20 fps
does a rhode mic work instantly after plugging it in (if audio in video settings is > on ? Or do I have to set it to a different mic? My audio seems bad even though the mic should be good. Thanks for helping me out!
Great video! Just one question: how do you get auto ISO to work with video? I mean yeah, it would be great if it would expose properly before recording but then stop adjusting when the recording button is pressed. However, it still keeps changing the exposure all the time which looks very amateuristic in my opinion. Is there a workaround or a setting that I am not aware of? 😅
Christian, does the slow motion playback on the a6300's LCD look laggy to you? I'm recording at 120fps and my record setting is 24p 50M. Should I bump it up to 120p 100M for smoother slow motion?
Great video again :) I want to share with you something about PP settings I have found that works great for my taste while shooting with sonys. So shortly here are my PP for no grading on the A7rII(on A6300 is the same but I prefer the S-Gamut3 if I shoot only with this body, if the project involves the A7rII I stick to the S-Gamut because it is easier to match the footage) Gamma - Cine4 Black gamma - Narrow 0 Color Mode - S-Gamut Saturation +28(here I play with this one depending on the scene, if it is not going to burn any color I set it at the max 32 setting) Color Phase +3 Color Depth R4 G5 B5 C7 M5 Y2 Detail 0(here it is a matter of personal taste...) If the scene is with higher contrast I change the Cine4 to Slog2 and overexpose it +2.0. Overall I try to shoot unflat as possible :D. The idea is that flatness is making problems later when grading due to the heavy compression of those cameras. You just have to watch out for clipping and overexposing stuff. I will be happy if you try my settings and tell me what you think about them :)
I use this camera (sonya6300) for my youtube video but it overheats a lot and I cant record more than 10minutes in 4K! do you have that problem to? or do you normally shoot short clips? Its really frustrating :(
Nice video man, I do have a question, I thought for continuous autofocus it would be better Wide focus area, But you mention other options. Are you finding it works better with your set up? Just wondering what get's the best results for face tracking. Thanks
hello, I would like to know how to set the Sony a6300 when using the slog2 because when I use it in post production I have a lot of noise and do not know how to set it. i have a kit lens (16-50 3.5-5.6)thank you so much.
You make a good point about white balance . Shoot the colour temperature 'NEAREST' to the colour temperature you want to be in the final grade. If you watch the 'white balance' video by Jerald Undone where he tests whether or not in camera white balance makes a difference on modern cameras you'll find that if you shoot RAW in camera white balance doesn't matter because it can be changed in post without a colour shift occurring. However when you cannot shoot RAW and you have to compress the image with a codec changing the white balance in post will screw with the image. So this brings us to the important bit. Don't simply white balance to make your whites 'white'. This is something that nearly every tutorial will tell you to do and it's WRONG!! (at least when talking about modern camera sensor technology) Why would you white balance your whites to white only to warm everything up or cool everything down in post. It doesn't make sense and also introduces noise. BUT if you decide to shoot at a certain colour temp warmer or cooler, THAT will get you closer quicker and with less noise because you're having to manipulate the image less in post.
I love how this camera shoots in 4K! I wanted this camera but the canon80D seemed better for what I do(: but hopefully I can obtain this camera in the future(:
I have a 5D Mark III. I am more a photographer than a film maker. I am doing more video alongside my photography and I love the video capabilities with the a6300. Worth the change? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)
Noob question here: Will the autofocus "zone" setting help with the warping in post when you stabilize? I'm finding that in my videos after I stabilize them in final cut, they sometimes glitch and the image looks "bendy" or curved for a split second. Thank you!
I'm in ireland so have to use PAL for my region, so can some tell me the best setting for slow motion on pal? Can i use ntsc or what problems will i run into. Thanks i'm new to video making and would treasure the advice. I have the A6300 and the Canon 80D
Im not sure about shooting ntsc but for pal you want to shoot 100 frames a second. In the US they watch videos at 30 frames a second, so 30 x 4 =120 120fps = 1/4 speed In Ireland we watch videos at 25 frames a second so 25 x 4 = 100 100fps = 1/4 speed when played back at 25fps
Is this camera worth purchasing in 2018? Or is the a6500 really worth it? I've heard about over heating with the a6300. But it seems most people who have this camera say it's not an issue
nice vid and info! i wonder what sd card u are using with your a6500 shooting 120p 100mb? i recently bought a sandisk extreme 90mb/s do you think it will do the 4k and slowmo job? cheers!

Here is a summary of his settings:
4K for normal shooting.
Gamma: Cine4 (or Cine1)
Colour Mode: Cinema
Detail at -4 (in 1080p mode)
Detail Adjust: Limit 7, Crispning 7, B/W Balance Type3
Never use AWB, set it manually or to a preset.
You want it to look closest to how your final graded image will look.
Perfect ;)
Also note that the sharpness I think he said being down at Detail -4 is for 1080p shooting!
Good point, just edited that in!
Hey Christian, if you had to decide between the Sony 16mm and the Sigma 19mm which would you go with?
Men my favorite UA-cam didn’t get any answer damn it
Ps I love your videos cause of you I bought a Sony a6300 to film ❤️
What is your preference Daniel? I have seen them both hunt for focus...
Wow my idol!!
And now Daniel has 1 Million subscribers fast forward 3 years.
@MP4 for anyone dropping in here the 16mm is amazing, nj I've even used it for macro photography and it holds up.. as a wide lens
I rewatch this video maybe every 4 months and still pick up on stuff that i didn't before. Thanks again for the great rundown.
Christian Mate Grab, you are going to do big things. The talent with your shots and vision is unreal. Keep it up and thanks for the information! That Zhiyun Crane gimbal thoooooooooo !!

I have a Sony A6300, very helpful. Anyone know the name of the background song he used?
Ella Vos white noise
This is one of those channels that makes me so thankful for UA-cam.
Super Video Christian. Ich bin mittlerweile ein großer Fan von Dir. Der Look deiner Videos ist der Hammer. Sehr gelungen. Viele Grüße
So good! I have watched this video a million times! Love the editing, grading, information etc! Thanks!

Color grade is magical
Color grading is an art. I'll work hard to become great at it! I'm looking forward to the day my videos looks as good as Christian's.
my fav video on the sony a6300. Love how this footage turned out
Nice bro! What metering mode do you use? I stopped using auto iso for my vlogs recently because the metering was weird!
With us, Auto ISO works perfectly in the program automatic mode.

No way, I was looking for something exactly like this! Thank you!
If everything goes alright I'll have my a6300 on Thursday! Very helpful video, will definitely need help with the menus later and here I got it, thanks man!
You are going to love it congrats!
Yeah hopefully! Thanks :D
This video was perfect! Thank you for the post, definitely going to be using these tips!
If you adjusted EV Comp to +2 for Slog video profile, does this EV comp stay at +2 when switching to photography?
Awesome Christian, you really inspire... keep up the good work bro!
What is the difference between the different picture profiles? PP1-PP9?
Your videos are always so high quality
Your videos rly do help beginners for making the best of the gear :) thank you man
Big thanks for the review.... you put lots of time choosing songs... i'm sure... mood is paramount.
It also remembers the specific video mode (P/A/S/M) which you can choose via the Fn button by default. ;)
+Fabian Bläse oh ok didn't know that, thanks!
I'm getting the A6500 this week So excited! Great video.

what kind of backpack and coat did you have on?.. it was really cool

Late reply, but yes. 4k down scaled looks much sharper and retains more detail than 1080p especially after compression

How can I create that kind of visual, in his intro? It's extremely HD, but it's got like jittery effect/look to it. I would love some answers/feedback if my question makes any sense.
It should just be because of the 25 FPS setting
higher shutter speed gives that effect
Hey Chris

Shoot in 120FPS and slow the footage down. That's all he is doing. If you don't have a gimbal best option is to run in 120 FPS and slow it way down.
You can also use a 3-axis stabilizer or a steadycam. We use a steadycam.
hey I noticed you have the same problem I have... when I go under xavc s HD and then go under the framerates it only gives me 100p at 100mb, but the a6300 is advertised to do 120 fps... what am I doing wrong why cant I get those extra 20 fps
Hey Christian, nice video, what bag are you using in this video, good or bad?
Will i get a copywrite strike if i use this song in my video? btw jus bought a6600 love it
does a rhode mic work instantly after plugging it in (if audio in video settings is > on ? Or do I have to set it to a different mic? My audio seems bad even though the mic should be good.
Thanks for helping me out!
Great video! Just one question: how do you get auto ISO to work with video? I mean yeah, it would be great if it would expose properly before recording but then stop adjusting when the recording button is pressed. However, it still keeps changing the exposure all the time which looks very amateuristic in my opinion. Is there a workaround or a setting that I am not aware of? 😅
Very Well Done! Keep 'em coming!
Christian, does the slow motion playback on the a6300's LCD look laggy to you? I'm recording at 120fps and my record setting is 24p 50M. Should I bump it up to 120p 100M for smoother slow motion?
How do you get those creamy colours in the test footage? Alternatives for sony a6000?
Great video again :) I want to share with you something about PP settings I have found that works great for my taste while shooting with sonys.
So shortly here are my PP for no grading on the A7rII(on A6300 is the same but I prefer the S-Gamut3 if I shoot only with this body, if the project involves the A7rII I stick to the S-Gamut because it is easier to match the footage)
Gamma - Cine4
Black gamma - Narrow 0
Color Mode - S-Gamut
Saturation +28(here I play with this one depending on the scene, if it is not going to burn any color I set it at the max 32 setting)
Color Phase +3
Color Depth
R4
G5
B5
C7
M5
Y2
Detail 0(here it is a matter of personal taste...)
If the scene is with higher contrast I change the Cine4 to Slog2 and overexpose it +2.0. Overall I try to shoot unflat as possible :D. The idea is that flatness is making problems later when grading due to the heavy compression of those cameras. You just have to watch out for clipping and overexposing stuff.
I will be happy if you try my settings and tell me what you think about them :)
When it comes to rolling shutter how do you deal with that in 4K ?
I use this camera (sonya6300) for my youtube video but it overheats a lot and I cant record more than 10minutes in 4K! do you have that problem to? or do you normally shoot short clips? Its really frustrating :(
Where'd the sister get the DJI jacket?
I think she worked for DJI at the 24h of Nürburgring Race. DJI was one of the main sponsors.
Have you tried Sonys Liveview Grading app? Is it similar to picture profiles?
What's the brand and the model of that backpack? Is it weatherproof? It looks so vintage, love it!
That background music is Ella Vos' White noise. Frikkin A. Love that track.
Nice video man, I do have a question, I thought for continuous autofocus it would be better Wide focus area, But you mention other options. Are you finding it works better with your set up? Just wondering what get's the best results for face tracking. Thanks
Hey Chris how do u do your color correction ? Any tips please !!!
hello, I would like to know how to set the Sony a6300 when using the slog2 because when I use it in post production I have a lot of noise and do not know how to set it. i have a kit lens (16-50 3.5-5.6)thank you so much.
and I know how to make downscaled 4K to 1440 or 1080p? Thanks you!
which would you prefer only for videos? rx100 m5 or a6300?
Dude, I have the same lens and Sony a6500. How come I don't get to choose the af drive speed or the other focus modes????
What is it that you do that a6300 can't do? :/
EdVentures I have a 70d and I can still get some decent shots, not 4K or as flexible but still nice
EdVentures Pretty sure the a6300 can do everything and better than the 80D... and I use one!
I have a 5D Mark III. I am more a photographer than a film maker. I am doing more video alongside my photography and I love the video capabilities with the a6300. Worth the change? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)
Noob question here:
Will the autofocus "zone" setting help with the warping in post when you stabilize? I'm finding that in my videos after I stabilize them in final cut, they sometimes glitch and the image looks "bendy" or curved for a split second.
Thank you!
from my knowledge no. Do you're best to keep the image steady, if needed do camera movements with software, especially if you shoot 4k
For some reason my video mode is always so dark on my camera....what did I do wrong in the settings?
I'm in ireland so have to use PAL for my region, so can some tell me the best setting for slow motion on pal? Can i use ntsc or what problems will i run into. Thanks i'm new to video making and would treasure the advice. I have the A6300 and the Canon 80D
Im not sure about shooting ntsc but for pal you want to shoot 100 frames a second. In the US they watch videos at 30 frames a second, so 30 x 4 =120
120fps = 1/4 speed
In Ireland we watch videos at 25 frames a second so 25 x 4 = 100
100fps = 1/4 speed when played back at 25fps
I am planning to shoot a film, Plz tell me which cam should I buy, a6300 or a6500 with lens
Is this camera worth purchasing in 2018? Or is the a6500 really worth it? I've heard about over heating with the a6300. But it seems most people who have this camera say it's not an issue
nice vid and info! i wonder what sd card u are using with your a6500 shooting 120p 100mb? i recently bought a sandisk extreme 90mb/s do you think it will do the 4k and slowmo job? cheers!
if the lens is sigma 30mm, you mentioned it doesn't work on manual focus that great (not sure if I'm right) so do I just set it to auto?
