    Finally someone telling that sugar/carbs are not our enemy (provided that we not overdo it). I am sick of all experts who preach that keto (and intermittent fasting, in many cases) is the solution to all of our problems.
    Consuming more calories than the body needs is actually the problem whether it comes from carbs or any other macronutrient. The more physically active you are, the better you can handle/metabolize the carbs.

    The worst part of added sugars is the empty calories.

      There are very different kinds of sugar ranging from rather healthy to rather unhealthy (for different reasons). Afaik the unhealthiest sugar is fructose. But even fructose can be consumed in a way that isn't detrimental to your health if you don't eat (much) more than around 3 g per meal (which equals 6 g of sucrose) on a regular basis.

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon Рік тому +1

      @@EnsoReloaded There is nothing unhealthy about fructose. 6 grams of fructose maximum on a daily basis? You just eliminated fruit from your diet, something which we know to be a healthy part of any diet and unhealthy to take out.

    • @EnsoReloaded
      @EnsoReloaded Рік тому

      @@Melesniannon No, it's not a daily limit but a „dose limit“. That means how much fructose you eat at once is (much) more important than your total daily fructose intake. Also, the 6 g is the limit for _sucrose_ . For _fructose_ it's 3 g. However, that's actually a „low limit“. That means that if you won't eat more than that amount at once - independent of the context in which you eat/drink the fructose - there virtually won't be any detrimental impact caused by the fructose.
      Now, if you e.g. eat fructose in the context of a full regular meal the limit is very likely (considerably) higher than 3/6 g.
      Unfortunately I'm not aware of any research that has precise data about how much higher the limit is within different contexts. However, I'd assume that within a regular meal the limit probably could be at least doubled (6 g fructose or 12 g sucrose).
      Also, most fruits contain a good amount of fiber which very likely increases the 3 g „low limit“. But even with the 3 g limit there are a lot of fruits you still can eat (if you won't eat too much at once).

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon Рік тому

      @@EnsoReloaded Alright, I misread your sucrose for fructose, that's my bad but the point stands.
      I'd invite you to look up the fructose content of an apple. Or an orange. Or a banana. Or a pear. A dose limit is an even worse limit because you've still eliminated fruit.
      Where does your "low limit" even come from?
      Maybe more importantly: given that it's apparently some limit for the isolated consumption of fructose (which happens... when?), and there's no data on how "bad" it is when consumed with other nutrients (even belonging to the same food such as a piece of fruit), what possible practical use is it?

      In terms of weight gain or most health outcomes that’s fine but it’s not the best approach for long term health. These foods cause higher free radicals production especially due to the fructose that results in more glycation end products than glucose. In the context of natural sugar in fruit that’s ok because it comes with antioxidants and compounds that combat the free radicals and oxidative stress.

    • @theoreticalfitness7701
      @theoreticalfitness7701 Рік тому

      @@knockingseeker The creation of free radicals is a natural part of cell metabolism, not raw sugar or fructose intake. If you are keto, you still produce a lot of free radicals.
      The only accurate thing in your statement are antioxidants helping with getting rid of them. But at the end of the day, especially with cancer, you can iv antioxidants daily and still die of cancer.
      There is way too much environmental pollution and radiation everywhere to make much a difference, and unless you can isolate the subjects in a lead container that is lined to prevent lead poisoning, and heavily scrutinize the quality food eaten, there are too many environmental factors that are going to skew the study and provide abstract results that end down the avenue of the pseudo science you just took a trip down.

Now with the hunger...I must say that I get hungrier whenever I eat white rice compared to something like potatoes, or I add something like a sugary sauce. That's definitely happening to me. Hello Layne, I have a question - is there any difference for human health when you eat organic meat like grass fed beef vs "normal" meat? And the same question for milk and eggs. I have noticed that bio-eggs are bigger, yolk is deeper yellow colour and they taste better. Is there any data on this? Thank you very much, I am a huge fan of your work! ❤

    Can you please talk about the anti Calorie movement and what it's all about? And why do people get offended when you bring up Calories these days? Maybe it was Bart Kay who started this anti Calorie movement but it's weird

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon Рік тому

      It wasn't Bart Kay. The "anti Calorie movement" as you put it is older than Bart Kay is. People have always sought to find different reasons for their weight gain that didn't turn out to be "overconsumption". To some extent that is also a good thing because we didn't stop trying to understand the human body and its metabolic systems, but the downside is you get people who latch on to any theory that suggests their weight is not their fault.
      As for people getting offended, western cultures haven't treated their fat people so well. They're frequently the butt of jokes, and are portrayed as having additional negative characteristics which have become typical of "fat people". Fat people are mean. Fat people are socially awkward. Fat people are nerds. Fat people are dumb. Fat people are lazy. Fat people are slovenly. Fat guys leer at girls. Fat girls are sluts. Etc. etc..
      Historically, gluttony is even one of the cardinal sins. It's no wonder people ended up trying to displace the responsibility for something they've been guilt-tripped about for decades if not *centuries*.

    • @daysoftheboo
      @daysoftheboo Рік тому

      @@Melesniannon I don't know about everybody else but I never heard of the anti Calorie movement until Bart Kay talked about it and then the carnivores and ketos talked about it the whole thing about Calories not existing well people gain weight when they eat more people lose weight when they eat less so how does that explain Calories not existing??

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon Рік тому

      @@daysoftheboo Well, the terminology matters for both subtopics, things get a little messy when it's vague what we're actually talking about.
      The modern principe of the ketogenic diet involving periods of fasting is from the 1920s. Its recent rise in popularity, with something like "ketos" or a "keto crowd" existing, is clearly far more recent, about 20 years. On the other hand the principe of fasting and a ketogenic diet is ancient and has been around for all of human history. So depending on what you're exactly referring to, the answer to whether or not it's recent is "No", "probably" or "absolutely not".
      Even if we take a more modern approach about it, a diet as well-known as the Atkins diet is still from the 1960s, which predates Bart Kay's year of birth as near as I can find it. Fun fact, it's not easy to actually find out when Bart Kay was born but near as I can find it, it was in 1970.
      Of course Bart Kay is more about carnivore, and the carnivore diet is from the 19th century. Then there are proponents of it that argue it's far older, one might say, "ancestral".
      Whether a ketogenic or carnivore diet is part of the "anti-calorie movement" is however an entirely different matter, as the dates I've mentioned didn't necessarily propose the introduction of the diet as an express anti-caloric agenda but rather for specific goals.
      If you keep such things in mind it's easy to see how the water gets muddied in terms of "what started when". The simplest version is: since the Internet and especially social media became widely available and everyone got their own personal world-wide megaphone, and became able to reach each other quickly and easily, we start seeing these things as "movements".
      Still makes it hard to say who started what but you're looking at the past 2-3 decades for the mass media stuff.
      When it comes to the subtopic of calories not "existing", again, terminology matters. If you define existance as 'material', so only things of matter exist then no, energy doesn't technically exist and neither do calories. They're a construct.
      Of course you should question whether or not that's important to what you're trying to do. A lot of things we use are constructs. Time, for example, is an immaterial construct but you won't hear Bart Kay deny its existence because that's not part of his agenda. What matters is whether they serve a useful function to what we're doing and in that area, time and calories have something in common: they are measurable by virtue of being a standardized unit and thus they absolutely do.
      Does it matter that you can't "touch" a calorie, just like you can't "touch" an hour of time? Only if you want to swallow what Bart Kay is trying to sell you.

    • @daysoftheboo
      @daysoftheboo Рік тому

      @@Melesniannon I don't know but both the carnivore and keto people and the zero fat very low fat people AKA raw till 4 Freelee style diet both claim you don't need to count calories as long as you eat the diet , the only time you have to count calories is when you're eating all three macros which I don't mind doing I want to eat all macros I don't want to eliminate one group or two groups just so I don't have to count calories then I'm going to miss out on nutrients, despite the claims of carbs not being essential they still contain vitamins and minerals

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon Рік тому

      @@daysoftheboo I've been eating low-carb for over a decade, along with intermittent fasting, and at first I did not count calories because I greatly loathe that task. And yes, I lost weight, because I made adjustments to my eating patterns that caused me to consume less calories automatically, without counting them.
      And then my weight loss stopped, because I'd achieved a new balance. If I want to lose weight now, still eating that low-carb diet, I need to count calories. When I do, and my adherance is good, I lose more weight. If I don't, I don't lose more weight.
      You don't always need to count calories to lose weight, it's a tool that you may or may not use. The same goes for low-carb or carnivore diets and intermittent fasting, they are tools that you may or may not use.
      However anyone who claims without any context or nuance that you can have unlimited succes without ever any need to adjust your tool use along the way, is trying to sell you something.

    Because one of insulin's vital roles in the body relates to fat storage: it inhibits the breakdown of fat cells and stimulates the creation of body fat. That is, insulin tells the body to stop burning its fat stores and instead, absorb some of the fatty acids and glucose in the blood and turn them into more body fat.
