  • Flash #123 Comic Book Conservation Project Ep. 6.
    In this video I continue the comic book conservation project for this copy of Flash 123, the first appearance of the Golden Age Flash in the Silver Age, and the first acknowledgement of an alternate reality in which the Golden Age heroes exist, which is the beginning of the multiverse concept in comic books. It was published in September 1961 by DC Comics and credited to writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.
    In today’s video i reveal my most effective comic book wet cleaning and bleaching materials and methods. I provide easy-to-follow graphics so you can replicate my process on your own stained comic books if you desire.
    These techniques are archival and when executed properly do not trigger purple or restored label when submitting your comic books to CGC.

    Such impressive results on that inner wrap! And I for one really appreciate your detailed explanation of your process. Although I do get a little anxious when you are pushing (instead of pulling) the squeegee across the hollytex. 😂
    You didn't give a detailed recipe for making your rinsing and bleaching solutions, so let me know if I have this right. The raw ingredients are water, Triton X-100, 3%-strength H2O2 bought at the store, and 100%-strength CAOH (the clear liquid remaining floating on top of the settled "milk of lime" made as described in your "Advanced Comic Book Cleaning" video).
    To make the 25%-strength CAOH rinsing solution, the concept is that the desired mix strength is 1/4 of the concentrated CAOH strength (25% = 1/4 * 100%), so that ingredient should make up 1/4 of the desired mix. So to make 500ml of rinsing solution, we need 1/4 * 500ml = 125ml of the 100%-strength CAOH concentrate, combined with 500 - 125 = 375ml of water. Add 5 drops of Triton X-100 (1 drop per 100ml of solution, which adds minimal volume) and we are done.
    To make the 25%-strength CAOH / 0.5%-strength H2O2 bleaching solution, we apply the same concept, but now for 2 ingredients. The desired CAOH strength is 25%, which is 1/4 of the concentrated CAOH strength (25% = 1/4 * 100%), so the concentrated CAOH should make up 1/4 of the mix. And the desired H2O2 strength is 0.5%, which is 1/6 of the 3% strength of the concentrated H2O2 from the store (0.5% = 1/6 * 3%), so the concentrated H2O2 should make up 1/6 of the mix. So to make 200ml of the bleaching spray, we need 1/4 * 200ml = 50ml of the 100%-strength CAOH concentrate. And we need 1/6 * 200ml = 33ml of the 3%-strength H2O2. Combine these with 200 - 50 - 33 = 117ml of water, and we are done.

    You’d have to know where those stains were to see them now. Wow, incredible.
    I imagine the process of removing a stain from a cover would be a different process?

    Such a difference, Dr Paul. Great job. I’m going to try it if I find a comic in my collection with similar staining and see if I can duplicate your methods. Thanks for all you do, very enjoyable.

    Great results once again! Especially like how you did the blue light treatment with the wrap still wet I have not tried this method, but I will give it a shot 👍

    Dr. Paul, another great video! Are the Hollytex sheets reusable? Thanks!

    I am confused as to why you only did the light treatment on one side of the wrap and not both. Did I miss something here?

      @danfoley2442 10 місяців тому +1

      The H2O2 in the spray mix is the main bleaching agent, and its effect is accelerated by the blue light. Both sides of the wrap are saturated in the bleaching solution, and the light is intense enough to penetrate the wrap sufficiently to accelerate the H2O2 bleaching on both sides at once. Blue light alone would never lighten the stain as completely, and both sides of the wrap would have to be exposed for many hours to achieve comparable paper whitening, probably with noticeable fading of the yellow and red inks.

    Does the type of paper ,re 1960's to present day books have a different outcome. As the years of paper have changed, Does it present more challenges??😊
