I selected this video as I would like to purchase a Skyhawk... I stayed because of the tone and your chops...well done!
Awesome, thank you!✌️❤️
Loved it!
G&L deserves more love than they get.
I know from other channels (factory tours, etc..) that they are a relatively small operation as compared to many others. At G&L you can still order a custom guitar that doesnt break the bank.
To me they are actually a better value than many of the Fender offerings and offer the very latest (last) designs of the man himself...who at the time was trying to out-do and improve his earlier work. What's not to love???
Thanks for the demo!
I'm so going to do a factory tour the next time I'm up in LA 😊✌️
I have a MIM fender (which I love) and a G&L Tribute and the G&L is absolutely better quality for the price. Planning for my next to get a Fullerton made, just trying to decide if I want a Skyhawk or an S-500n
yep. G & L is basically the next iterations of Leo Fenders ideas after he was able to start making guitars again.
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Jonathan, do you prefer the CLF SSS Skyhawk or the HH Skyhawk?
Wow! You do know how to get the best sounds of this Skyhawk! Beautiful music and great review!
Thank you✌️❤️
Thank you Jonathan!. Finally someone who demo's a guitar the way it was intended to sound!!
My pleasure!🤓✌
Always love to see someone with old style of guitar playing. Appreciate it 👍😁.
so I have am old style of playing?????? hahah just joking...Thanks!✌♥
This body shape seems to put out less bell like tones, or less quack. I think that is a really good thing. It gives the tone a little more thickness to it. I like this guitar sound better than the Comanche with the Z coils. The Z coils cut off too much of the sparkling highs. The S500 just sounds like a Stratocaster with a little more articulation from the MFD pickups. For a thicker sound than one can get with the S500, and still maintaining good high frequency clarity, the Skyhawk really gets the job done for anybody who doesn't want to sound like everybody else with a three single coil pickup guitar.
Thank you for the review Jon. I watched this a few years ago. Back then I was still stuck on the Stratocaster sound. Now I hear this and can appreciate how the difference in tone makes the Skyhawk special.
most welcome!
Great playing in that opening number Jonathan - you make those G&L guitars sound really good!
Thank you so much.. they are a joy to play ✌️❤️
Love G&L, own two. nice playing Jonathon, subbed.
Thanks Graeme! Welcome to the channel!! :)
I have only seen still photos of this guitar and they do not capture the sparkle and nuances of this spectacular finish. Great video work! You playing is also excellent. You used the perfect style to show off what the MFD pickups can do (I have an ASAT) and the rest of the info you gave was interesting and important to anyone wanting to know more about the G&L CLF Skyhawk.
I am now seriously considering selling my new Stratocaster so that I can pick this one up.
Thank you Charles ✌️❤️
Love the sound and tone on this.
✌️❤️
Another fine demo, another fine guitar. Hope you're doing well. Take care.
Thank you John. . I'm good.. Just swamped with work lol✌️🤓
beautiful sounding clear tones
Thank you✌️❤️
Thank you, Jonathan. I just found your channel today. I love your videos!
Thank you!! Welcome to the channel✌️❤️
Jonathan Koh You’re very welcome! Harley Bentons and G&Ls!! It’s like you are making these videos just for me! I was subscribed after 2 videos! 😎👍
Thank you. That is exactly the guitar I've been looking at. Nice cutaway and it has a tremelo bar. Kinda like a strat with a smaller body. A perfect design.
Glad to help✌️❤️
This one also sounds really nice Jonathan. More stinging in a good way I think but that’s my ears. I see too I should work on developing my bar skills, your use of it is great! Rawwk!
😄✌️
looks great
I have to try a G&L Jonathan! You have a knack of making me want to buy guitars:) Have a great day buddy!
You too brother.. Have a great Sunday ✌️😄
I was drooling over these a few months back, but there are very few in the used market. I assumed youd have to custom order from G&L to have a chance of getting one. It is wonderful! Congrats on the guitar; Cheers! 🤓
🤪 these are widely available brand new.. and no I did not procure this guitar. It was on loan just for this review...✌️🤓
I love the MDF Pickups, the Guitar is so cool and so good. Super Video. 🎸🎼🎸🎼👍🙂
Thank you ! ✌❤
These G&L Skyhawk (both SSS and HH) are really gorgeous guitars.
I agree! ✌♥
It should be noted that the MFD are much less noisy then standard strat pickups. I've owned Strats and a few G&Ls with the MFDs and there's no question that the MFDs are quieter. I think it's because the MFD pickups use stronger magnets and less windings of wire than regular alnico pickups.
Does G&L do something special with their wiring? I just got a Fullerton Legacy HSS and when I touch the strings or bridge the noise is further reduce, that does not happen with my fender strat.
Great tone!!!!!
Thank you✌️❤️
Intriguing guitar. I would love to try one.
Beautiful guitar............ and playing.
Thank you John ❤️
Sweet playing
Thank you!✌🤓
that is a beauty!
Yes it is 🤓✌️
Another killer video, thanks Johnathan, you could probably make a walking stick sound melodic!!!
No Doug...i cant lol
Tasty playing
Thank you ✌🤓
Jonathan you just convinced me to buy one.
Enjoy yourself!!✌❤
Nice video! I think I prefer the sound of the Comanche to the Skyhawk but it’s a close contest.
Thank you Sam ✌️❤️
Johnathan, I love that composition... Do you have any video with the process of recording those cool songs of you? Nice and good sounding guitar!
Thank you Antonio✌️😊
This is the sexiest guitar. I’m officially taking aim at a purchase. Not confirmed yet whether I want the singles or two hums.
Cool ✌️❤️
Hey Johnathan! You're a great player...ever think of doing live shows online to talk about your experiences...its a great chance to gain subscriptions...I've been directing people to your channel...you'll probably get a lot more with live shows. It's a great community!
Hi!! no..never thought of that..I'm biting off more than I can chew right now..maybe sometime down the road..Thanks for the thought though! :)
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thanks for the response!
Nice video. Do you prefer the G&L or Fender strats? (Fairly new subscriber. Sorry if you`ve answered that question in another video.
I still like my Japanese Fender traditional 50s White strat.. It just had this distinct sound. Probably because of the ceramic pickups..🤓✌️
Hey Jonathan, great video as always.
I was wondering what is the difference between the CLF Research Skyhawk vs Fullerton Skyhawk .... any thoughts ? Thanks.
They are the same...✌💚
Top guitar, sounds great ☺ Also looks pretty sexy as well !
It does.. Doesn't it?? ✌️😄
Great demo. I have been eying this for a while. How is the weight?
thanks...about 3.5kg
Ñisssssssssce 🎸
Johnathan...must of been pretty excited about guitar... you said at very beginning it was made in Fullerton skyhawk and that it was a G&L research....I believe you meant it was a G&L Skyhawk made in Fullerton California
Hahaha forgive me..I was saying that it was a made in Fullerton skyhawk...😜✌️
So, essentially this a S-500 in a different shape body. Would be interesting to compare them side-by-side to see if there's a tonal difference.
Let's see if I can get me hands on both soon...
Original S500 had this body and controls. The skyhawk is basically the same guitar.
Is that a humidifier you have in the background there Jonathan?
Yes Andrew 😊
I hesitated for 2 or 3 months to think about whether or not buying this guitar last year, finally I got my blue color clf research skyhawk with maple fingerboard. But I really hope I could watch your video earlier Jonathan:)I would not hesitate for that long if I could watch this video.
Lol... it’s ok. You still bought it in the end✌️❤️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud nice guitar, nice sound, and I hope oneday I could play it like you did in this video. I love the solo!
@@user-jd7jh3yf6g thank you.. but you will one day, play better than me!!✌️❤️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud haha,I need to do a lot of practice!
@@user-jd7jh3yf6g we all do!!
Hi Jonanthan, love the channel. I've recently become a regular watcher! I purchased a Skyhawk several weeks ago and I was surprised how noisy it was. Towards the end of your video, you mention 60-cycle hum but I believe mine has something beyond that. Mine has a lot of static until I touch the bridge or strings, then it goes away. That has me thinking it is a grounding issue. I was wondering, did yours do that? I think I can still swap it out for a different one but I wanted to make sure what I was experiencing was not normal. Thanks and God bless!
Hey Mark...if its bothering you, you should exchange it or let the shop take a look at it. It shouldnt be so bad unless the wiring of the place that you are playing in..i presume your house, is really bad. keep me updated ❤✌
@@JonIsJustTooLoud I'm thinking the house wiring could be contributing to it but I also have an ASAT Special and I get the 60-cycle hum but no other noise. I sent the Skyhawk back and the shop shielded the it and the 60-cycle hum is less but the buzz when I'm not touching strings/metal, etc. is still bad. I thought they would have addressed any grounding issues, too. Thanks for responding!
@@MarkFelton hmmm...you wanna try getting another skyhawk?
@@JonIsJustTooLoud That's what I'm thinking. I'm thinking I got the 1 out of 100 (or 1000) that has some faulty wiring. I figure the next one can't worse but it could certainly be better! Do you still have yours? I love the MFD pickups! So warm!
@@MarkFelton That Skyhawk I reviewed aint mine...belong to my friend Jeffrey!
Hi, nice Guitar and a good sound. LG from Germany Detlev
Danke!!🤓✌️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Sie können Deutsch hätte ich jetzt nicht erwartet. (well done) I see you on the next Video.
Jonathan , your a bad ass
🤓✌
I have a 2007 G&L Comanche and I love most everything about it except it seems they place the low E string a little too close to the edge of the fret and if you are not careful you can easily "run off the rails" so to speak. Is this a quality of G&L's ? I notice this Skyhawk seems like it is awfully close as well. I help the situation by replacing the .046 E string with a .048 so it will be a little tighter and not slip off as easily. It helps...... I like the guitar too much to get rid of it, so I found a way to deal with it better. I can avoid that if I stay ever conscious of not approaching that string from the underside with my finger. My other guitars are not as easy to make that mistake.
The other way is to get a new nut with closer slots ✌️❤️
I have a similar issue with the high E of my Ernie Ball silhouette. Though I now incorporate it into a high bend sound😁
My only gripe with the G&L guitars I like, including this one, would have to be the gloss finish on the necks...yarrrrk! For me, satin finish or naked oil treated (like a Peavey Wolfgang) is the way to go. I find gloss finished necks, as well as painted necks, like most Les Pauls, don't allow your hand to slide freely...especially when you sweat a little. Also, I would prefer a flatter 12" fret board radius over the 9.5"...so I guess the gloss is not really my only gripe, lol. I wonder how hard it would be to remove the vintage gloss from the neck. Any ideas??? It sure is a great looking guitar nonetheless, and thanks for putting up such a great video!
It’s really easy..

@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thanks for the reply. Another good vid, and very helpful. Subscibed!
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Just out of curiosity...how would you rate the g&l clf research against a Music Man Cutlass?
Long Board Hi... check their site, I have a satin finished neck on my SC-2 and it’s great. Pretty sure satin necks are an option on all their models
Sounds like you want an Ernie Ball.
I may have missed it (will keep looking) but do you have a preference or thoughts between this Skyhawk and the Comanche? Would love your thoughts.
I would prefer the comanche...that string retainer is not really happening for me although I like the body shape of the Skyhawk ✌🤓
Jonathan Koh Thanks. I love that body shape, too, and the Gold is amazing. But that Comanche sounds so good and unique.
if you had to pick between the Skyhawk, the Comanche, the S-500, or the legacy, what would you choose?
Tough choice!!Probably the Comanche✌❤
@@JonIsJustTooLoud thanks so much. You have made my decision for me.
Glad to help ✌️❤️
Great video, how similar is the sky hawk to the legacy?
The difference is in the body design as well as the choice of pickups. The Legacy has classic Alnico V pickups :)
Sounds close to the s500.
@@jessebarrera159 yes... But still a slight difference depending on the type of wood used. This is Alder while my S500 is basswood ✌️🤓
@@JonIsJustTooLoud My S-500 is alder with maple neck and my Legacy is a special run with a sugar pine body and rosewood fretboard. I'd guess that my s-500 would be very similar sounding to your Skylark.
Nice!! How does that sugar pine body sounds?? Different from the alder body??🤓✌️
Not fond of the aesthetics, but she sure sounds good!
Hahahaha yes...Gold is not everyone's cup of tea ✌️😊
Do you own every G&L guitar?
Heavens!! No.. I wish it was true though!!🤪
My uncle {God rest his soul} could have NEVER played that guitar, the body is too small. He needed every inch of his 335 when he was playing drunk, and would began to tip over. It held him up and kept him from tipping over his stool more than once.
cool! Thanks for sharing 😄✌
In 2019 you can't really recommend a guitar with a rosewood fretboard anymore.
Why not? 😊
www.guitarplayer.com/gear/rosewood-may-return-to-low-cost-guitars-in-2019
@@JonIsJustTooLoud ....apparently rosewood is taboo in the states...its supposed to be an endangered species ....remember "cites"...so manufactures are switching wood or sourcing it from different countries....like caribean islands...
I know.. But things might be about to change 😊
Caribbean Rosewood isn't actual rosewood. It's a misnomer.
Sorry Johnathan your guitar reviews and playing make me want buy every guitar you play so I must stop watching your videos.............not.😎
Lol✌️🤪
