    I think ya'll are wrong about BG3 when it comes to the possibility of GOTY. Like yes it is a CRPG and yes CRPG's are niche. But part of being the GOTY and part of being just a 9/10 or 10/10 game in general is being so good that it appeals even to people outside the niche target audience and get people to play and enjoy it that otherwise would never play that type of game. The game really showcased excellence and did things people thought weren't possible in gaming as a medium, that's exactly the kind of thing a GOTY contender does. The game blew up even outside the CRPG gamer niche and was like everywhere with everyone talking about it and how good it was. Also keep in mind other GOTY winners at TGA are also niche games. Elden Ring is a souls game and souls games were ALWAYS niche, and it still won.
    This is just the first time we've had a CRPG that is so good it has a really good chance of taking GOTY at TGA.

    I couldn't imagine having rushed through my first playthrough, because it would make the ending and NG+ so... weightless. Greg Miller's spoiler talk about his experience is the best case I've seen for why you should absolutely take your time the first time. In subsequent NG+ runs sure go ahead and skip the main story, but even then when I finally settle on a NG+ run to be "my neverending sandbox run where I seriously dig into ships and outposts" I'm absolutely going to opt into doing the full MSQ experience again.
    I think the MSQ works (once it gets more interesting lore-wise) as more of a scaffolding surrounding the game's reality itself. I don't think it works as a conventional videogame 'story', because there isn't really much story there, or concrete answers at the end aside from what certain things are and mean - and even then it's a lot of metaphysical arglebargle talk. But as a coda on your character's life itself, I think it 100% works well - especially if you've really bought into the roleplay aspect. When you start over in NG+, things feel very tangibly... different, for lack of a spoiler explanation.

    Modders will fix it is not just something people say it is on record bethesdas actual position on the matter. Do not expect them to fix anything, if you are lucky they might fix some of it but they have actively gone on record to say they know and expect modders to just fix or add things for them. That is an actual thing they keep in mind during development.

      I may disagree with a lot of the shit Starfield is getting (definitely not all though), but I do like that it got attention back on NMS. While Starfield definitely had it's flaws, I think a lot of people were expecting Bethesda to make the game that already exists in NMS, and I guess people either forgot or were unaware of how awesome NMS is now.

    I don't exactly understand Cohhs outlook that the guy was smug asking Todd about PC optimization. This has been a criticism of Bethesda for 15+ years, and they still lack basic features like FOV settings or texture quality. Then people are finding out the game doesn't handle CPUs or GPUs very well and are sharing fixes already that vastly improve the framerate.
    Makes me miss Totalbiscuit, it's a bit annoying that any criticism is met with, "well this is just how they are." At least when people bring up From Software they do improve upon each release for the ten years they've released on the platform.

    Trying to be neutral on this but considering the lack of innovation, state of the game, and apparent reliance of modders to make their game playable - I really struggle to understand why people keep giving Bethesda money.
    Having said that, I don't need to understand and I'm always glad when people have fun. :)

    • @normalmighty
      @normalmighty 10 місяців тому

      I think a key thing to keep in mind is that most games are not remotely as easily moddable a Bethesda games, and modding is a really fun hobby. I've never published any mods, but I've made a few for Fallout 4 myself and I'm thinking of getting into the Starfield mod scene later too, when I can afford the pc upgrade to run this resource monster of a game.
      I think that a lot of people talking about mods in this game miss the fact that a lot of people enjoy modding, not as some stand in for making a game from scratch, but as a fun hobby to work on to unwind, and Bethesda is one of the best at supporting that community (despite some rocky drama at times).

    • @theamulas
      @theamulas 10 місяців тому +2

      @@normalmighty Allowing people to mod is great for sure, and I'd be less cynical if they had designed a brand new UI for example. However, it seems like they cut corners in certain areas (graphics, UI) under the expectation that a community member will fix it for them via mods.
      Also, don't Bethesda take the lion's share of any modding revenue that is created - essentially making modders very underpaid developers for them?
      I could have this backwards but I have a perpetually bad taste in my mouth when it comes to this stuff.

    • @normalmighty
      @normalmighty 10 місяців тому

      @theamulas I do agree that they cut corners assuming mods will handle it which is a clear negative, but it's not enough to put me off them. I have a bigger list of clear negatives buying from pretty much any other dev studio this size. I went through a phase of trying to boycott every studio that did something shitty on that level in my uni days, only to realize I had literally ruled out every studio I liked except for indie devs. Now I still don't buy from a few especially bad studios - mostly for how those studios treat their employees - but staying away from a studio because they cut corners is an unrealistically high bar if you want to play any decent number of higher budget games.
      The pay thing, that's what I was referencing by past dramas. They started a paid mods system and then rapidly canceled it again due to massive backlash from the modding community. Everyone thought it was decent when they said it was an around 25% pay split, until they realised it was 25% to the modders, not the other way around. Plus a bunch of other related drama.
      Was a great idea in theory that they absolutely butchered, but I'm not holding a grudge about something they tried and took back for a week or 2 around 7 or 8 years back.

    • @theamulas
      @theamulas 10 місяців тому +1

      @@normalmighty I agree with you on the boycotting. Depriving yourself of something you think is fun to 'punish' a big studio for working practises isn't worth it imo.
      However, Starfield is a pathetic step forward. It's gameplay is essentially the same as Oblivion that launched in 2006 and the writing isn't stellar either. So we have 20 year old game mechanics, and mediocre writing, in a game where corners were obviously cut despite having access to Microsoft's QA team. No Man's Sky has a more seamless space experience and that was developed by like 10 people, 5 years ago.
      I don't want to get on my soapbox too much (probably too late and I apologise) but considering the product they put out, and the size/experience of Bethesda and how long this game has been talked about, this might be one of the most underwhelming and disappointing launches I can remember.
      I would also agree that Dev practices are bad across the board, but this is the company that brought out Fallout 76. This basically puts Bethesda in a category with Blizzard for worst company - and Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 are also mediocre games (imo), but at least they're polished.

    I mean custom game engines are dying out. Since there is a lot of movement in the game development scene having very niche skills in a custom engine doesn't really help you developing in Unreal (thats like 90% of games). The creation engine bugs and idiocracies have been documented for 20+ years by modders same bugs/limitations. Starfield was a wake up call for lots of people (same basic game with different paint for 20 years). Having to rely on modders to fix the game is disrespectful to you the paying costumer.

    Listening to the starfield bug talk i can count myself happy that none of that happened in my 40 hours of gameplay. I lucked out on cyberpunk as well back then. Only on npc that wanted to fly with me caused 3-4 crashes during the landing on a planet. No crashes other than that.

      Yea, everyone will have their own luck. For some reason the game consistently crashed when I would go to a systems planet (Altair, Altera?) but then everything worked when I flew to another planet in that system and then went to the planet with a mission marker.
      Other obvious 'bug' is NPC related, crewmates not being able to move in the cropped space or an enemy jetpacking to a spot and not knowing how to get out of it, or the occasional levitation.

    I'm confused about the nicheness of BG3 and Starfield and other games as part of the GOTY discussion. BG3 may be niche if you are taking in all possible people that play video games in a year, but that is not the same people that make they decision of what is GOTY. It's developers, reviewers, and all video game industry people that determine that. And as niche as crpgs are, BG3 is one that not only is hundreds of thousands are still playing on just steam, and how niche are bethesda games compared to the broader video game landscape. Are we considering that nicheness is the ratio of it's player base to the general video game populace, or is it because bethesda players play the games for longer because of the openness and modding community? Also, weather a game is niche or not, be it Starfield or BG3, wouldn't a good contender for GOTY would be one that convinces people to try a game they may not have thought to play in a genre they don't typically play?

    • @normalmighty
      @normalmighty 10 місяців тому

    • @wprescott82
      @wprescott82 10 місяців тому

      @@normalmighty but, the audience that would take part in voting is more likely to look like the audience for this show, the “hardcore gamer” for lack of a better term. Which comes back to my question how are we defining what BG3 is niche too. I bet if you did a Vann Diagram of the players of both games and the like audiences voters for GOTY, there is more overlap than you expect for a game considered niche. So, while the genre may be niche to the overall gaming environment, the game itself can’t be too niche to be considered for GOTY.

But usually these are cosmetic or memes. Only here do we discuss mods in the context of delivering what we paid for. It makes me nuts. Why are we ok with this? I paid $100 for a game that the community rationalizes the underbaked nature of via mod support meanwhile Larian Studios is giving me whiplash with how fast they are releasing hotfixes and full patches. With Microsoft, who just fought the biggest legal battle in the history of the industry funded off their purse size alone and paid Billions for BGS before that, being behind the resource stream for this game, it’s inexcusable.

From just the visuals (default light filter is god awful for example, makes everything hazy and dull looking), to entire systems that are half-baked. Environmental Resist suit integrity for example has like 0 Hud information, you just guess how much Resist you need on a planet lol and the Outpost system basically requires Daisy Chaining everything together meanwhile the Outpost container "upgrades" just give you containters that take up 2x more space, cost 2x resources to make and fit 2x as much items in them... in other words you could've just built multiple of the level 1 container. Mass in general is terribly balanced and Outposts being just infinite Xp/Money farms is pretty lame. Every system is just really shallow that falls apart at the seams as soon as you delve deeper into it. Funniest thing I ran into was a planet without oxygen, where you needed a suit to walk outside have a unique location where some guy not only built a pool on his roof, but threw a pool party on his roof where people left slippers and beer lying around....

      The game is designed to run at 30fps on Series X. Obviously you are going to need a CPU with a similar performance level to get a playable framerate. Many people with low and mid spec machines are expecting 60fps when they simply don't have twice the performance of the Series X hardware. You need a Ryzen 7000 or an Intel 13th gen for that. Likewise you have players with high end systems that are used to high-refresh rate gaming that also don't understand that the bar is being raised in these 'next gen' game titles. We're not in the blip in history that was the PS4 era anymore, where those consoles were launched with a mix of low-mid range components, and therefore PC hardware quickly leapfrogged game requirements.

    • @BobFolowski
      @BobFolowski 10 місяців тому +1

      @@strangestecho5088 Your comment lacks historical empiricism. This engine is creating riffs in performance between hardware that would perform equally in any other scenario. Look into AMD vs Nvidia in this game (e.g. 6800xt vs 3080). It's the same situation for cpus, where a $100 Intel i3 13100f is outpacing a Ryzen 9 5950x. A 12900k performs BETTER with hyperthreading off. You talk of how the bar is being raised in this "next-gen" game, but the evidence speaks to an ironic and antiquated lack of parallelization. I understand the engine perhaps has its benefits but to say this unprecedented level of disparate performance should be expected in 2023 is not substantiated.

    • @strangestecho5088
      @strangestecho5088 10 місяців тому

      @@BobFolowski Individual games doing disproportionally better on one architecture over another is a common phenomenon within the industry, and AMD worked much more closely with Bethesda on this game. Nvidia may yet release a driver update that closes that gap.
      Ryzen 5000 CPUs don't have enough raw single-core performance to hold 60fps in the most demanding games on the market. That's not a Bethesda/Creation Engine specific problem. It's also true for Witcher 3, Cyberpunk, Baulders Gate 3, Unreal Engine 5 games, etc, etc. Whining that developers 'just need to parallelize their games' is an idiotic over-simplification of an industry-wide problem. Many CPU tasks cannot be parallelized without causing bugs or outright breaking a game.
