6 TOP TIPS FOR COMMUTING BY BIKE!

- Опубліковано 6 сер 2024
- Commuting saves you time, money, gets you fit and for me it was the period where I lost a big chunk of weight. So wanted to share some tips that make it easier and simpler to get to work by bike. It also covers things like 'what if there isn't a shower at work' or 'my commute is too far'.
There's also a chapter in my ebook Cycling Made Simple, dedicated to the commuting by bike. The book can be found here: www.ilikemountains.cc/s-h-o-p
If you have any tips leave them in the comments :)

Only thing I think this missed was a reference to the mental health benefits of bike commuting, nothing clears the mind at the end of a stressful day like that homeward bike ride … everyone touts the physical health benefits and they are considerable, but getting home chilled (and satisfied!) does wonders for you and family life!
Absolutely!!!!!!! As opposed to the stress of being in the car.
Totally agree. My commute is very short, but if it’s been a stressful day I extend my commute, and get home feeling mentally better, plus burning those extra calories makes sure I get a good nights sleep
@@spawneedave mines is 1.3 miles each way! I really ought to stop being a lazy ass and driving... :-o
Yeah your right or cause youve finished work carry on if its light nights I love the sense of adventure and the sound of the road and the wind in your face ( not too much wind though ) nothing worse it's a killer Haha
Same for me. I have always wanted to leave work stress and issues in the office. Commuting helped to fight this issue. Then I started commuting for a longer periods of time.
Cycling to and from work is where the love of riding started for me. It’s a great way to start your day and upset motorists.
Motorists are upset because a lack of exercise. Lol
Definitely upset them 😂 I’m a cyclist & when I’m in my car I f#%king hate cyclists
What type of bike do you have
@@melissaramirez473 I have a Giant Fast-E road bike, it’s electric and a Giant TCR carbon fibre road bike.
I had a job that was far away and I had to wear business dress clothes everyday which was too heavy to transport all the time. So I would drive in on Monday with my bike and clothes for the week, leave the car and bike commute all week. Then drive the car home on Friday evening. It really kept me committed to riding every day even in weather I really would have preferred to avoid!
Ahhhh yeahhhh great tip. I used to do similar actually. Leave the car there and that meant I would have to cycle in the week if I wanted to go anywhere :) I guess the car turned into an expensive wardrobe on wheels 😂
Your comment sections are some of the most civilised I've ever come across.
Credit to you, I think.
I'm 55 years old and I've suffered from depression for about 25 years, exercise has always bee a part of managing it for me, mostly running, short distances 3 or 4 times a week. I work in a hospital appx. 13 miles away and earlier this year after a lot of thought and research I sold my car (my wife kept hers so we still had a car) bought a btwin tilt 120 folding bike from decathlon and started cycling to my local station, 2.5 miles away, then train, then 1.5 mile cycle at the other end. I did this everyday, whatever the weather and have benefitted physically and mentally. I've just bought a hybrid bike through the cycle to work scheme, I pick it up next week and after watching your film I'm going to start cycling the whole way, to and from work one day a week and take it from there. Until now everyone said commuting more than 10 miles each way was really difficult, but you are right, if you want to do it , you can and will do it and, as you say, it doesn't have to be all or nothing, on the other day's I'll carry on with bike and train. It is healthier, it does make you feel sharper and more alive, it's saved me a small fortune and you don't have to search for parking spaces. Thanks Katie.
Katie’s current series makes cycling approachable for everybody.
Her journey from non-cyclist to lean long distance rider is a heart on the sleeve example anybody can follow.
the money I've saved via commuting I've just spent back on bike stuff, and i wouldn't have it any other way!
My commute is only 8 km round trip and I often ride easy to work and push it on the way home. I’m fortunate that I can ride bike paths the entire commute. It’s fun to overcome challenges such as the cold or rain.
I'm almost 63, I ride to work everyday and love the time out, frosty morning, traffic less commutes. Sometimes when sharing my passion with work colleagues and friends, I get disbelief about the pleasures and benefits, in future I'll share this video link.
Remember to learn the Highway Code or equivalent in your country so you know how to legally ride on the road. I did and found it useful to feel more comfortable and to have the inevitable discussions with other road users. Great tips, enjoying the series and advice.
Pannier racks attach by 4 bolts. Don't take long to remove/install. Panniers are arguably the best option and ortlieb prob. The best. Tailfin is lovely but £££ and v.desirable to thieves. Good lights that you can recharge at work. Spare tubes @work. Carry tools and tubes/pump, easily accessible also disposable gloves. Reliable tyres. Can you take bike in work? Do so. Overshoes are worth having to keep feet dry. Handryers good for drying kit, server rooms even better.
Overshoes are a great extra tip! Cheers Mark :)
Thanks for sharing this Katie. I keep trying to inspire people to commute more, and you inspire me to keep doing it for sure!
This has been an excellent series.Thank you! Appreciated the options you mentioned in this episode for getting your gear to work. One variation I’ve tried recently is a traditional saddle bag with a carradice bracket. Swift even makes a bag that can be attached to the saddle this way and/or used as a handlebar bag. Versatile! And it’s easy to take off the carradice bracket when you’re doing a sportive, etc.
I enjoy watching and listening to your tips especially for bike maintenance since I'm a newbie. In the past, I biked for fun, but I would like to commute by cycling in the future. Thanks!
I always work from home and got myself a road bike last year to spend every few days on the bike after work. I always liked riding my city bike, but having a proper road bike increased the level of fun by a huge amount. I found your channel a few days ago while looking for clipless paddle tips and subscribed. Your videos motivate me to go out and ride my bike even more. Thanks for doing this and keep up the good work, Katie!
You are so real and open and honest and I just wish more people were like that , great you tube channel and well done 👍
Hi Katie, you have been a huge inspiration for me. Trying to buy a cycle and start using it on a daily basis. Your tips have been really helpful and encouraging.
Loved this video - I started watching your videos around 18 months ago as a newbie cyclist getting prepared to ride Europe with my husband and friends. Have helped me so much - and loved that you lived in Oz. Am now absolutely sold on commuting to work - even though I ride through Sydney. Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks for the heads up on commuting to work. I'll try it next week.
Thanks for creating and sharing your story with us. I love the artistic touch to the beginning of your videos. 🚴♂️
I was worried about Covid19 pandemic. So I substitute car or public transport uses for bike. With this change I gained much better sleeping nights among others surprising things. Better nights brought me extra energy to face (and now enjoy) the life! It makes me happier in an incredible way! I am leaving in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I am Brazilian and I love the bike revolution which is happen around the world! Congrats for your videos, Katie. Congratulations for everyone that love the bicycles!!!
Thanks to all your advice I’ve managed to go out today and complete my first 100k which came in at 107k in under 5 hours riding remembering to pace well and fuel well can’t wait to watch the rest of the videos!!!
Loving your video Kate ...I only ride few miles a day but I try different routes not nothing to far as am on my feet all day ..but I damm love it ,as you say change of clothes ..love the help and links you give ....keep & ride safe everyone just enjoy your two wheels short or long jaunts as long as you enjoy your bike ..stay safe x
Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm planning to start commuting (19 miles each way) as a way to avoid the crowds in public transit.
I have been cycling ever since I can remember. To school, shopping with parents, touring on holidays and now commuting to everywhere. Depression locks me in when possible and your channel helps me to remember that passion for cycling. I don't have car or license and feel best about the carbon footprint which I avoid at all costs. You bring up great points with your topics and today I learned mote again. Thank you for sharing and cycling all options available 🤗🙏
I currently cycle 20 mile round trip every day to work on a Trek ebike and I love it. I use Ortlieb pannier bags which are great. I do however have to be careful on the A road. Another great video Katie and thanks for sharing 👍🏿👍🏿
I've just started cycling again and bought my first bike since 30 years when i last had one i was 16. i own a Scott Aspect 970 MTB, i use it for daily commutes. I've stopped driving, and im building up my cycling routine each day. want to thank you for your posts and videos, it helps alot.
Love these tips. I really need to cycle to work, working on it!
I purchased your ebook and it’s very informative👍🏻👍🏻 I started cycling 2 months ago and I really enjoy it. Another great tip for long hair is dry shampoo. It works wonders for my hair. Great series!!
Just completed my 1st practice commute to my job the other day(27mi)! Thank you for all the great info. From vegan nutrition to planning routes and practicing being kind to yourself. It's nice to see someone on this platform that is so sincere and relatable. 🙂
Thanks so much!!! Would love to send you a copy of my ebook! :) Email me with your details to hello@ilikemountains.cc xx
@@KatieKookaburra Thank you so much!! Sending info now!!!
Thank you so much for a very informative video. I hope to start commuting soon! 🚲😎
Great advice there, I've been commuting for the last 20 years on my bike, come rain shine and snow, it's quicker, better for me and the environment, by doing this i have inspired about more than half a dozen colleagues to do it,
We are now looking into getting another bike shelter due to the demand,
Keep up the great work and sorry to hear about you breaking down on the way to Sheffield 😔😁
Thank you ... great video and your experience provides confidence for the beginner
Really genuine attitude and helpful tips. Thank you!
You're not wrong about roads being different when you're driving. You don't realise how many up and down bits there are. Great video Katie!!
It really helped me with my depression people I work with and others that are around me can tell when I haven't ridden my bike for a few days I do not have the same attitude it keeps me positive
I found one real help for me was getting the right tyres. I appreciate this is getting a bit technical really early but I just felt safer and more in control and therefore I enjoyed the commute much more. I commuted in London and although there were some busy sections I managed to find quiet parallel routes which were great. Starting the day with an enjoyable bike ride and a shower always made me feel chilled out but mentally fresh. Great video and thank you for encouraging more people to cycle.
Great tips as always! Hard not to have a smile on your face going to the office after a nice bike ride :)
Thank you Katie for your video it was very helpful and informative on communiting to work
Baby wipes work great for freshening up after a ride. They clean the dust off your face nicely and have a cooling sensation also.
Hi Katie, have been following your Channel for the last few months. Really great content. I live in The Netherlands and I am a secondary school teacher. Have been riding my bike for years, but have never commuted before. I am going to start commuting once a week after the coming summer holiday. This video featured some great tips. Thanks.
Yassssss that’s amazing! You will love it! :)
I'm getting prepped to start commuting. The distance has been my biggest hurdle. Like you, my work is a little more than 20 km one way and I'm a bit concerned with my fitness and, because I live in Texas, the heat of summer. Thanks for the tips and inspiration.
It is great way to lose some stress and clear your mind after work. In the morning commuting is the best way to oxygenate your body and start preparing for a workday. Great tips Katie! I use saddle bag and sometimes backpack. Less carrying is a great idea. I am bringing on Monday most stuff and taking to wash clothes on Friday. I'm bringing the food (only lunch) from home.
When Covid-19 is over, I want to start cycling (20 km each way) to university (I'm a 20 year old student). I live in Hamburg, Germany and cycling is often dangerous to life. That's why I took the train before... But I will find a bike friendly route:) Fingers crossed.
Thanks for the video❤️
Hanna i did exactly that when I studied at the University of Hamburg. For me it was about 16 km each way and due to traffic it took me between 50m-1hour. I think 20k in the city are abolutely doable, even if you sign up to the morning lecture ;-)
Hi Hanna, I know what you're talking about, I live in Hamburg too :-) I prefer riding through the parks, along the canals and through the smaller streets, it's much safer there and the air is much better. Good luck to you!
Do it, Hanna. I live in Brooklyn, NY, and work in Manhattan. I bike 17.2 miles round trip daily. If I can do it in non bike friendly city like NYC, you definitely can do it in Germany. Just spend your time planning your route. Be safe and have fun.
Loved your video. I am hoping to start commuting to work and you gave me some really nice suggestions. I've always been a a kind of all or nothing guy, so your tip about starting out riding just a day or two a week makes sense to me. My commute will be about 15 miles one way. One big obstacle is I work 12 hour shifts. Add to that commuting time of about one hour each way brings my work and commute time to 14 hours and 30 miles daily. However I would look at commuting time as quality time. Anyway thanks again for you video! Elvis Oost
fantastic video as ever, ivbe found myself doing a commute ever day in my bike from my house to my home office, its about a 20 mile detour each day though.
Another great video Katie. I never thought I'd say this but I'm really missing my cycle commuting since lockdown started and I now work from home. That regular daily exercise set me up well for the day. One thing I'd say about relying on your bike as a means of transport is you need to be able to fix flats and other mechanicals by the roadside and components wear down much quicker than you think.
I always felt much better when I had cycled into work too! Good for everything eh, ahhh I love cycling! Haha
My positive comment for the day is your videos have talked about a lot of things some UA-cam cyclist videos don't talk about. A lot of good tips on commuting (because I've wondered - especially the sweating) today. Cheers!
I started commuting by bike every day a few years ago; great bike paths and a 15km each way ride. Love the mental break before and after work and now I take the long way home a couple of times a week. I'm lucky that where I work has showers, lockers and a towel service (not to mention an ironing board for us corporate types) but even in the absence of all of those I'd make it work like you said. Commuting by bike has been life changing. 20kg dropped and now a 100km weekend ride is a given. Great series Katie, come back to Australia again soon!
Cycled for 20 years before I retied 40k a day, now ride every day and love it Katie your one of my heroes
Thanks David! :)
Best advice, just ride your bike. Doesn’t have to all the time just keep riding . Love it!
Helpful thankyou! Also about to start a 13m-each-way commute! Excited but also 😬
I have been in bodybuilding, football, basketball all kind of sports..but cycling have stoled my heart, for me and the rest of my life hope so is gonna be cycling cycling and more cycling!!! Riding in the evening when nobody is outside is just priceless. 🚴🏻❤️
These sound like great tips. For my arduous 2k commute I can disregard. I carry a heavy backback, because the ride is too short to work up a sweat. I‘m so lucky because part of that ride is through allotment gardens, so I experience a tiny sliver of nature regularly. I will consider prolonging my ride home though.
Fair Play Katie 👍👍👍
I to commute to work when I can and it really does make you so much fitter so on the days I can’t cycle I take clean clothes plus ring dirty ones back home for cleaning
Mix up your routes if you can that way you won’t get fed up of doing the same route
Happy cycling 👍🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴♀️🚴♀️
Just came across ur channel I’ve only seen two of ur videos I’ll continue watching tomorrow 👍
My commute is not far, but have switched from daily car use to almost zero car use. Your video has great tips, I like my messenger style bag, and as UK weather is not great (currently fab), I use a proviz jacket which is warm enough and water resistant enough for most rides plus really reflective for low light riding.
Thanks for all your videos. I used to be in great shape and cycled all the time. But now, after being lazy for years, I've gained like 60lbs. But I'm moving back to Dallas, TX from San Diego, CA and already purchased a new road bike and will pick up the day I arrive and I'll be commuting to/from work every day. And will re-join a bike club when I arrive also so that I can do 4 weekly rides. Gonna be really rough to start all over again but I'm looking forward to it.
That sounds like a great plan Jesse. Good luck and have fun.
Thanks for being simple and to the point.
I was giving myself all sorts of excuses to not pick up cycling (not having a bike was a major one) and desperately wanted to lose weight. I would scroll through UA-cam and Instagram for inspiration to get my backside off the sofa. I came across Katie's channel and the next thing I know, I was in a saddle!
It's only been a few months since I had my bike and started commuting to work once a week around 10k each way.
It was my 30th Birthday last week and I woke up in the morning and decided I was going to do 30 miles for my 30th (what a treat!). I completed this little self challenge and was buzzing for the rest of the week that I smashed my longest ride yet. All it took was for me to set my mind right and to just keep going. I actually really loved every minute of the ride.
Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Katie for her channel and for having great content and advice. It's genuinely inspired me and I look forward to where I can push myself next.
Once again more great advice & tips 🤗
I bought a new bike earlier this year and I cycle to work every day. I love it. I like coming home and seeing my car in the driveway and know that I saved money in gas and wear and tear on the car while getting great exercise.
Another great video with lots of great tips! Thank you!
Cheers for the support Gary! Really is appreciated.
Very helpful 👌
Handy tips I love your inspiration ❤
Wow I do drive to work but I cycle every day very exciting watching your travels
I am new to cycling and I am delighted I have found you I was so worried about cycling to and from work and your tips have been amazing so thank you so much
No worries at all Alison xx
Thank you Katie! Vital tips. Big greetings from a Russian commuter living in South Korea now. Stay safe
Really like the way that you think about commuting and clearly know what your on about! I've thought about driving half way and commuting the rest, which for me would probably be enough to start and then parking a bit further away over time. (I do have a shower at work! Lucky me!)
Great idea. I'm thinking about driving in to my child's preschool then bike to work from there.
Using wipes after a ride and before starting work turns out great.
Nice tips. I have another 2 areas every bike commuter need to look into seriously. First is the traffic, unlike racing on the track, the road is open for all sorts of cars and buses and heavy trucks. Safety is the main concern as I have several closed shave with private buses. My solution is to divert my route to residential area which also increase the distance and time on the bike. The second is rainy days, and I have no solution for this. With or without raincoat is still the same, you are wet and smells. Since February, it rains so frequent that it break my schedule and now it is so difficult to pick up the riding habit.
My work has just signed up to a cycle to work scheme. Looking forward to getting back in the office
Keep a log. Doesn't need to be a formal one, but just track something simple, like money you saved each week in fuel savings. Its gives you something tangible to look at for motivation. And, you'll then realize how much money you spend in driving for things outside of your commute, and be motivated to bike in those areas also. I have a marker board on which I write down the amount I spend every time I fuel the auto. I try to make a game to see how little I can use each month.
Shorter doesn't necessarily equal better. I could move closer to work. I don't want to. I like my slightly longer commute. Its my alone time after work. Its meditative. After a while, the commute is the part of the day you start to look forward to.
Diet. Diet is important to get/stay in shape. You can't out train a bad diet. But also, your diet has massive effects on how you smell. Super important if you don't have shower access. Less meat and dairy, more fruits and veggies. Your (and your coworkers') nostrils will be grateful.
Down a full glass of water when you wake up. You can have your coffee after if you need. But drink the water. I promise, it will make you feel better.
Its ok to stop and listen to the birds sing.
My goodness. You are charming. Happy to find your channel. Can't wait to feel great and get in shape while helping the environment. Cheers and have a beautiful day from the US
I commuted by bike daily for 4 years. These are some great tips!
Duel Transplant recipient on a mission to re gain my fitness level.
Recently had to give up driving from vison lose, The bike is my new main transportation.
It's been one year since my bicycle accident that put me in ICU for a week and the hospital from a month.
post accident I learned, I am not the same cyclist I was 20 years ago when I stopped cycling and I need to earn back that level of fitness.
I also learned to use the brakes lol
Still waiting on my 3rd transplant
I hope trough motivation to continue this journey... Join me on the Ledge LETS GO
I don't ride a bike to add days to my life, I ride a bike to add life to my days
I watch your videos to help with my motivation.
i'm gonna start work to another city, and your video inspire me to do a bike commuting, thanks
Awesome Reza!! Remember always take lights!!! :)
Great ideas, thanks.
Great advice thank you so much
Good tips. I have the annoying problem of living too close to work. Only 6 km. So when going back home I often take a longer route, from 20 to 100 km. It's great. Working from home since lockdown, so I "go to work" by going for a walk (1 to 5km) into the "office" in the mornings and then I ride after work. Success.
After years of bike commuting one of the best things I ever did was get a pannier and bag - SOOOO much better than a rucksack
Extremely informative video
I'll be 51 in a couple of months and I just started commuting. It's only 10 miles round trip and I already see benefits from it. I must say, I'm hooked.
Thank you, great commuting tips
Your weight loss video led me to subscribe. Thanks for your very informative videos.
Hi Katie I enjoy this series of videos so much. I have been taking my bike into town on the bus and doing some riding around town, then I catch the bus home later in the afternoon again. I am enjoying riding so much. If it rains I get annoyed a little bit as I want to go out for a ride. I am already starting to feel fitter and have more energy. Riding around town I do find it hard with traffic being so close all of the time but I am getting better with it each time I do it. I turned to riding because after a few k's of walking my feet were killing me due to me being overweight. Combine now cycling and walking soccer and some walking around the neighbourhood I am starting to lose weight and am feeling much better. I am addicted to cycling now I absolutely love it.
You have just given me an aha moment!! I've been wanting to ride to work at midday but am worried about riding home in the dark. Duh. The bus!!! 😅 you have solved my problem! Thank you stranger. All the best.
@@DommieDarling1 Your most welcome. I live just over 20k out of town so I sometimes when booking the bus will book my bike on as well. The bus I catch has storage under the bus for people's luggage so my bike go's under there. It works out really good to be able to put my bike on the bus. Be safe and keep riding :)
Great video and inspiring ❤❤❤
Baby wipes also work well in lieu of a shower, my commute was 17 miles each way , I used to do it purposefully in 1 hour and 50 mins so as not to arrive drenched in sweat,
This is great, thank you! 😊
I use to ride to work but ran into problems you mention, but slowing would come up with solutions. Then I became lazy too and stopped riding. Your video kinda inpires me to start again. I liked the idea of maybe not riding daily 👍! Over where I live is HOT HOT! summer now. That's another excuse not to ride. Thanks for the goods tips 🤓✌
Full length mudguards, they changed my commuting life. You and your bike are kept so much cleaner and drier. In the UK you can get caught out at any time by rain. They don't weight too much, once they are fitted you can keep them on all year round. Also overshoes to keep your toes warm and dry when the weather is poor. Over time i have built up a range of clothing for all seasons, but a good jacket and gloves to start with are invaluable. Top tip from a 12 year commuter....mudguards though.
You can even extend them with a cut up plastic bottle to give you extra flaps to stop even more spray, just cable tie them onto the ends.
The gift that keeps giving.
I used to use the disabled toilet at work to get changed. More room and there was a sink to have a wash. I’m retired now so don’t have to commute. My longest commute was 21 miles each way, but I would only do that in the summer. In winter I’d ride 10 miles to the train station and catch the train in (getting changed in the train toilet!).
One bold individual with love of cycling.
I used to keep a couple of plastic floor mats in my office, the kind that have a lip around them to contain a bit of mud and water: one mat for each wheel. Then if the tires were muddy the carpet wouldn't get dirty.
Hello Kati, I am from Germany and i watch your videos regularly. I think your transformation to your current lifestyle is awesome, I stopped eating meat in November 2019 and was able to determine the positive effects on my health and athletic performance three months later. keep it up with your natural way, i like your videos very much. stay healthy and always strong legs. best regards from germany, Marcus
I commute on an ebike, at least in the summer, and it saved me enough on fuel that it basically paid for itself, and it also helped me lose, like 60lbs/30-ish kg.
Yesssss!!! Exactly, it’s the way to do it! X
Thank you for inspiration! Another way I can get more time in the saddle 😁x
I commute 3 days a week for work not quite as far as you did, but still 7 miles each way. There's a 9% hill just before home that I had to get off an walk up (old road bike with 52 28) when I first started. Now I can just sprint up it no problem. Took maybe a month of commuting by bike to be able to just cycle up the hill without any trouble.
too late for the book , but what a great idea start doing it one day a week! that is how I will start this week . Friday We do take out so i dont have to bring my lunch kit . Great !!
Since you started it, I’d love to see how you dress for wet winter commute. Because I need suggestions for shoes covers and hand gloves 😀.
