So 7 years later..... I have the Bosch. Still going like new! Very, very happy with it! It was totally worth the money! Still on the original batteries. It has done tasks I never thought it could, for it's small size. It's a little beast!

I really appreciate the way you did this review. Many times online reviews don’t seem genuine but are made to try to promote a preselected brand. Your review was straight up fair and honest with the good, the bad and the ugly. You’ve got a new subscriber here! Keep up the great work!

Great review. I bought the Porter Cable 12 volt as part of a drill/driver set at Lowe's for $ 100 two years ago when they were liquidating the 12 volt Porter Cable tools. I sold the impact driver shortly after, but I LOVE that Porter Cable drill ! Best power tool I have ever owned !

Great report, thanks for all your hard work. I'm a G.C., been doing it for over 30 years. I've been using DeWalt, but lately I haven't been too happy with them. I decided to give the Ridged 12V drill a try and I'm very happy with it. This little drill is a workhorse. The only problem I have now is that when I find something I like, they multiply quickly.

I had the Milwaukee 12 volt drill and used it heavily every day at my old job for 4 years. It never let me down! It really was a fantastic tool since it just keeps on working and it takes the abuse. However now that I'm in cleaner line of work I purchased a cheap Black and Decker 20 volt drill for DIY projects. It works perfectly for its intended purpose, its by no means a work horse like the Milwaukee is but its great for the price, and it battery lasts forever.

Awwww, bummer! Just got the DeWalt about 1 hour ago, should have looked here first! Thank you for the review, I took a double look at the Bosch before we left... but I already have used a DeWalt 12v Impact driver for the automotives. The battery is the same, so better commonality. And the Bosch was 129 dollars... not 69 on sale!
Thanks again, will use this for when my DeWalts die :)

I recently grabbed one of the Boschy kits then was very pleased to snatch up a great deal on a reciprocating saw kit (w charger and batt) on ebay so I ended up with three batts, two chargers, impact and drill with large tool bag for about $180! I was debating the Milwalkee because they have more tool options and better power, but I had good experience with 18v Bosch in the past so that pushed me over.

I am a super in industrial construction and over the past few years these "pocket drills" have become very popular, mainly with sparkys and hvac guys, and more often than not they have the little Bosch pistolinos. I would imagine the cost to performance ratio on that particular tool would be the best if all of the tradesmen are carrying them around.
Excellent review much appreciated, I think I am going to grab the Bosch drill and impact set when I see it on sale.

Interesting tests. I was surprised that some of the more expensive ones got beat out by the cheaper brands. I've had a Black and Decker 18 volt and it worked fine until I started using a quick charger for the 2 batteries that came with it. I will NEVER use another quick charger ever again. It killed my batteries way before they should have went bad. I also used to have (well I still have it and the Black and Decker) a Delta and it was a really good drill. Never fast charged those batteries and they last for a few years. Now I have a Hyper Tough (Walmart brand) and I got it on clearance and found a few of the drill kits in the plastic cases with all kinds of accessories and they were on clearance so I bought both of them, so now I have 3 batteries and all kinds of bits, and such and even a few extra chargers (I keep one at home and one in the case for when I'm out) and an extra drill in case I need to drill and drive so I don't have to change bits.

I have the Hitachi and never had the clutch slippage issue you had. Also you might want to consider that while it didn't drill as many 3/8" holes before running out of battery, it recharges in under half hour. I literally never run out of drill time with this setup because one battery always has a good charge.

I had the Ridgid one and i love it, by far the worse engineered both batteries and charger, both die immaturely, and Ridgid won’t do anything about it after passed warranty, i only used it twice and when i need it, charger and batteries didn’t work.
I went to buy another 12 volt, turns out the Bosch was extremely reliable, the batteries were the least complexity, very balance when holding. Love it.

Also the point about Bosch, It looks like the blue model: The blue model in Bosch is also considered the "Professional" series and until recently would have had a premium price tag. I see a pair of blue Bosch in my local B&Q going for some €230 ~ same as the Hitachi had been fro the last 5 years. ;)

Did you measure the torque of the bosch in 2nd speed? The one I have has 269 inch pounds in 1st and 163 in 2nd/high speed or in metric 18nm in 1st and 30nm in 2nd. Bosch 120-li (brushed version)

Excellent review. I was eyeing that Makita but not now! They're newer brushless 12v CXT is getting great reviews though. Too bad Dewalt cheaped out on the battery or they'd be a top contender, but no way I'm settling for 1.3 when others are 2.0. I think Bosch got the nod because of it's weight/size which is a real consideration for this class. That said I'd go for the one with the most capability since this would be my only drill and I like that the Milwaukee has more torque.

I am a Milwaukee guy, previously a Ridgid guy. I know these come with 1.5Ah batteries. The Bosch comes with a 2.0Ah battery. The holes drilled comparison is not exactly equal as the batteries are different amp hour ratings. Just an observation. I know Milwaukee and Ridgid have different amp hour batteries (definitely 2.0Ah) to make an equal comparison. Milwaukee has M12 6.0Ah batteries now that are insane on run time, but have a square base that can actually allow the tool to stand up. Milwaukee has 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 6.0 amp hour batteries for the M12 line. The M18 line goes up to 9.0Ah batteries!

Not sure why yours took as much as 80 minutes to charge. Maybe Bosch improved the charger or batteries (bought the kit 6 months ago).

I have a question. The Bosch torque is here measured 163 lbs per inch, correct? In Europe we use Newton per meter. With a conversion tool the 163 lbs/inch gives about 18 nm. But the specs say 30 newton meter at low speed 15 at hight speed. So the 30nm such rates much more lbs/inch. ....How can this be explained

Freddy Meiresonne you would have to know the testing procedure they are using. You can see how I do mine in the video.

Nice review btw. Things like this give you an idea. I had to bosch one week before i noticed this review. I guess i am lucky. I bought it because of the dimensions and weight, it is very compact, yet still has power ...

You need to resolve your drilling test against the AmpHour rating of the battery tested, to give you a value for the number of holes drilled per AmpHour. That gives you an idea of how efficient the tool is with the power available from the battery. Many of these tools have other battery sizes available. Watch Tool Craze's 12v tool comparison. His method is sound.

I own the Makita Bosch Milwaukee dewalt and hitachi top 2 I would recommend in 12 volt #1 Makita #2 hitachi #3 Bosch #4 dewalt #5 Milwaukee that's from a random 9-5 usage based on comfort and overall usage on random jobs NOT stats or sinking bolts in wood test

The Milwaukee was the only drill in the top three of all of your shown lists so...
    just saying

Highstranger951 it's a good drill. Just depends on what is most important to you.

That is true. And even though it didn't have the highest tq ok the gauge it put the lag bolt in the farthest (if remember corectly) out of the ranking lists you used/showed weight was not on them. I will day length was you did show them stacked. You didnt give a number rating per category (ie point), especially ergonomics. Because of the hard darts you showed/tested for. Your ranking is more subjective and possibly biased. Now if you said I'm looking at a more job oriented drill that has ling life, power, and easy to lug around all day ya the bosch wins. Your 'win' factors were not outlined, especially with stating these drills are more so for the home owner. Which the Milwaukee falls as number 1 by the data you provided. Ya sure if the drill is used to pays your bills bosch is on top. But at that level all the guys run 18v. Just my constructive opinion.

surprised on the Makita. this usually has a lot of high praise, of course being 12v it is regulated to light duty. even though the others seemed to outperform it, if you are going to be doing the type of work in the video you have to get past 12v for overall performance.

This is the first test I have seen, and I have watched a bunch, that Bosch didn't finish last. Makes you wonder doesn't it.

The problem is nobody knows how to use the drills properly or understands them even.
