i started following you not too long ago, because of the 'discovering Frieren' series. And honestly? I am glad I did, your voice is so calming and your videos are SO well done, keep up the good work, pey!
I also appreciate the surface (?) level mentions of storytelling theories, which tend to be fully overlooked / ignored in other similarly-themed content which instead goes through a lot of media productions quickly instead of taking a lot of time on a single production.
My favorite montage from Frieren is from episode 10, where we're shown the thousand years Frieren lived between Flamme and Himmel. In the early episodes of the show, we're told that the ten years she spent with Himmel and the others was a short journey, 1/100th of her life, but such an idea is inconceivable for humans who barely live a hundred years. In episode 10, seeing the time pass gives an idea of how long a thousand years is, but no more than the fifty-year montage we get in episode 1. Then, after meeting Himmel, we get a montage of their journey together and it's over in a second. Barely any time at all, just like Frieren said. It's hit me every time I watch the episode, and I love that the animators were able to convey such a difficult concept so effectively.
Man, Frieren's montages are so good. Like I agree with You but the 50 year montage on episode one is so ingrained in My brain that it has to be My favorite, tho their montage with Eisen is so lovely too with him applauding Frieren when she uses the acid grapes spell and then him getting applauded by them because lifting a Boulder. Idk man, i can't pick a favorite 😂😂😂 Edit: also Fern's training montage very cool too. Pure Quality everywhere I look
I can't think at present for a better montage. I am sure there are such but I just can't think of such. It shows us how Frieren perceives time. Incredible decision by director.
Like the saying that there is an Elf in the forest that they leave alone, and in that time multiple generations of humans have come and gone, as she has watched that village to a town and then a city.
Hey Pey, I just wanted to recognize you for a minute. I've been following for a bit now and I gotta say that your videos for Exploring Frieren are stunning. The editing, the script writing, and the huge amount of effort you put into all of your videos is crystal clear. I can't wait for you to hit 100k subs and even beyond. You deserve it all. Keep up the great work.
While Frieren uses montages to capture the progression of time, it's also vital to give the work a sense of adventure. Whenever Frieren and company encounter a new location there's usually 1-2 page(s) of dialogue-free imagery which highlights what they saw and did there, most of which were reproduced pretty faithfully in the anime. It does wonders to bring you into the world, your eyes are free to go panel-by-panel seeing their notable interactions with that location for the day. It keeps the world from feeling like it's just an interchangeable background, which it too often is especially in Japanese-made European-esque fantasy.
my favorite montage is in Your Name. The story could have easily been bogged down by the switching of bodies, but a whole film happens during the montages. We go from having them strangers to lovers within one montage.
Another very important part of nailing a montage is score, the montages in Look Back particularly swell with very potent and tender music that expertly convey the feelings it wants the montages to evoke. Frieren does this a lot too, my all time favourite is probably the last journey they take in episode 1. The music and narration is peak and never fails to make me well up.
I love what Frieren showing is it's all about the things we do daily that's taken for granted and yet we are unaware that they are the most substantial things we do to achieve our greater goals. That the journey is just as important as our destination. Which feels like the "least" content we can get as a topic in anime and yet we are gaining so much morals and experiencing so much feelings the smallest, simplest forms of animations from Frieren. It's such a poetic masterpiece.
Ok, Pey wth. Making me tear up at 9am was not what I expected from an informative video. Thank you, as always, for such a beautifully done video. You're amazing, keep it up!
these montages made me think of my school days when I was working on presentations with friend or did homework with my Mum. Those moments never felt special at the time, but in restrospect I value them more and more. Working a 9-5 job now makes me wish being a teenager again. I miss that time and I hate that I could realize the value of those moments so late.
Pey, yet again just an amazing video. The feelings I had while watching look back came back while watching this video, and the way you talk just flows like a never ending river. Keep making beautiful art my friend ✨you’re so close to 100k! I bet you’ll hit it in no time! 🎉
I just want to point out that since starting to watch your videos on frieren, this channel has been a wonderful gem and I look forward to all of your anylasis; your editing and voice over is clean and creative and just wanted to congradulate on almost 100K!
Right now i'm in the beginning of me trying to seriously do the project's i always postponed, either because of lazyness, fear or lack of dedication, one of them is making a channel talking about my passions, and i seeing someone who's doing just that and in a way that expresses so well what i'm looking for is really motivating, keep up the good work
pey you've inspired my soul so much. I'm going to keep creating, and I'll refuse to stop. part of the reason why is directly because of you. thank you so much for what you do.
Dang, Pey, you're killing it! Already almost at 100k subscribers?! I subbed only maybe half a year ago when you were -i think-still under 20. Way to go! And well deserved, your content hasn't dropped in quality one bit the whole time so far, and I'm excited to see what more is to come!
I see Look Back and know it'll be a good video. Definitely an underrated movie (in the West) that received fantastic reception and lots of discussion as seen in videos like these.
Would’ve been cool to see you touch on the montages in manga format as even while reading look back it felt like certain parts were made to be montages and they worked that way while reading them conveying whatever emotions they needed to at the time despite the pace of reading being up to the reader the author is able to influence it so we’ll. Great vid anyway I’ve been liking the way you’ve been doing the last few exploring frieren vids especially you’ve improved a lot over time keep it up
Your "Discovering Frieren" series is how I found you - thank you for everything you've done in them. So surprised but incredibly glad you're covering one of my other favorite authors, especially when on the surface they couldn't be more different - i think the core of both of their work is emotional storytelling. I really like this video called "The Heart of Chainsaw Man" by Kyle Robes - I don't know enough about the field to know if the terms he used were correct, but essentially he argues that Chainsawman uses pulp and gore to drag readers out of their comfort zone, then uses their vulnerability to really focus in on the humanity in of his characters without it feeling too ... he used the word "cheesy", i feel like "preachy" might be better - but i'm not quite sure.
While many put the term "perfect" as something unattainable in an imperfect and chaotic world, an alternative meaning in some places is "fully complete" and I think that meaning definitely applies to many of those montages because they aren't missing anything nor would they be the same if something was removed.
Hi Pey! been a fan since you started releasing Atrioc music. Some personal favorite recent montages in anime/manga are the Dan-da-Dan acrobatic silkies' montage and the backstory of Kuma and Bonney in the One Piece Manga :) love the content
pey: I thought I knew what 'montage' was, then, at the start of the video, I know nothing. Again. A wonderful disentangling of the term and introduction to the Soviet Montage Theory, simply to set it aside as not useful, then to ponder the wonder of the perfect montage, showing us that lightning does strike twice: in Frieren and in Look Back. Another banger video-essay, sir.
Absolutely love your series on this. Have you read the manga of Frieren also? If so do you think you'd continue this series into the manga, exploring the concepts and such. Especially in Machts story, it has so much to explore.
Hey, Pey, if you want to do a one off analysis of an animation, I would highly recommend Myth's Bad End by Mazu Maru. I'd love to see what you would pull out of this animation.
I'm sure you'll have a part 2 of this, but music is just as important in montages. You showed The Turn in Oceans 11 where the montage music is more fun and whimsical, contrasting the serious and dark portions during the heist. I listened to Frieren when I was making long road trips after watching the show in its entirety. The music just feels like a sense of curiosity and mixing of old and new knowledge during the montage that feels so... comfortable?
Hey I love your videos and I always think you approach things from a pretty unique perspective, I’m wondering though what song is playing at 4:05 because I’ve heard it in other videos (I think?) and it’s a great song.
Entirety of Look Back felt like a montage, Montage about progression, montage about life, montage about progression in life, … Montage about taking a step back from progression to look back and see all the montages so you can continue without it
I know you probably won't read this since my comments seem to be getting blacklisted but in any case, I'm sorry for any past offense I might have caused, and also congrats on yet another wonderful video! Also, happy holidays!
@@upg5147 that's good to know! I've been making comments on the past few videos and they seem to be deleted(?) or invisible in some way, by yt possibly or maybe him which is why i apologized, and thought seriously about not commenting anymore 🥲
For all intents and purposes, animation is a kind of montage … a series of images, lending context to each other, generating a plot. But! Context seems to be the most important part, because; although a montage can tell a story in isolation, it is usually in service to a greater narrative offering context. - this is probably why Motion Boards became a thing, like Motion Comics; they are a sequence of moments connected by their order of appearance. 🥂 Sir.
I think this video suffers from the "too much theory, too few specific examples" syndrome. Not only that but I felt like you missed the chance to expand on one of the best montages ever: the one in episode 10. After Flamme dies you see Frieren moving on and living by herself and 1000 years pass. After that Himmel recruits her. This is followed by a second super-quick montage, about 1 second long, that show moments from their journey. The length of those montages is proportional to how much time they cover and the first montage is 100 times longer than the second, which is why those 10 years go by in the blink of an eye - an excellent representation of how she perceives time.

Something like this is so interesting because the manga, which has these types of montages, obviously, does not have music.
The montage in the first episode didn't hit me very hard the first time through, it made me cry the second.

🥂 Sir.
What do you think of an anime ending being a montage ?
In case you haven’t ever heard it. Please listen to the song “Rings” by Aesop rock. The entire song to me is one big beautiful montage.
So a montage is a b-roll with a purpose in simple terms ?
A video on motages in Arcane would be cool, since they carried of lot of burden of storytelling especially in second season.
What do you think of the word Montage?
