What blows my mind is how he had tried to grab her *two* other times and was still out on the streets...but because *this* time it was caught on film, they couldn't deny it was happening anymore. What our justice system has taught me is that you basically have to be recording yourself 24/7 as a woman, otherwise things that happen to you aren't taken seriously or believed.

Not to victim blame in any way, but the notion that that girl didn't even have pepper spray on her while having a restraining order against a creep bothers me. I feel like you should get issued a Taser when the order is granted.

Saying "not to victim blame in any way" at the start of your comment doesn't mean you're automatically okay to victim blame. people shouldn't have to live in fear when they've reported a stalker (more than once) and gotten a restraining order.

Even if she had pepper spray/Taser I don't think it would have stopped the attempted kidnapping, so how is that victim blaming. I think what NWPaul72 is just good advice for anyone who has a stalker, also just good advice in general.
We all agree that no one should live in fear with a stalker, but sadly we do live in a world with that. Because of that it will always be good advice to have a way to defend yourself.
The first argument to neutering your female cat should be the risk of cancer. My cat is currently going through a full double mastectomy (double mammary strip removal) due to breast cancer. Was told by the vet if she’d been neutered before first coming in season she would have had 95% less chance of cancer. I had no idea.
Technically for male cats it’s called neutering and for female cats it’s called spaying. Good info to share though! 😊
Not to make you feel bad but I also had this happen to my cat, but she unfortunately passed away shortly after the surgery. It spreads so quickly and cats are unlikely to recover from it.
We noticed are kitten start going into heat at around 3 to 4 months old so we spayed her, but found out at the vet that she was already pregnant and had them terminated. She gained alot of weight (and ate alot) and is our biggest cat now, we started feed her less and giving her more water. Do you mean "first coming in season" as in her searching for a parter?
The earlier you have your pet fixed, the better their health is overall. Spaying a female cat at the appropriate age can also avoid her having issues with UTI, uterus, and rectum in addition to assisting in preventing cancer.

I love cats. I have had cats ALL my life. Most of my outdoor cats, with bells, chips and high vis-collars, died within the first few years. My indoor cats are turning 19 this year and -aside from age related issues- have been the happiest, most trainable, and most amazing companions I could have ever asked for.

Yes I love cats! But there are too many cats, and it is due to the fact they breed so quickly. Most cats should be indoors. If a cat is feral and needs to be an outdoor cat, make sure they still get sterilized!
My cat has been trained to be inside and no longer has a desire to be outside at all. Only on the pouch for some fresh air. That's it.

See. This is the problem with Reporting things like that. "The man Plead Not Guilty". The man DIDN'T plead not guilty. The JUDGE enters a plea of Not Guilty for you, because YOU DO NOT HAVE A LAWYER at arraignment. They want you to have a lawyer before you can ACTUALLY enter a plea of your own. That way, you can't appeal on insufficient counsel. If you were to go out an get in trouble TODAY, you would be arraigned, usually within 48-72 hours in which case, the JUDGE will enter a plea of Not Guilty for you. EVEN if you say you want to plead guilty. Unless it's a misdemeanor that doesn't have jail time or if the jail time is 3-10 days. Usually anything requiring 30 days in jail or more, the judge is going to want to make sure you have a lawyer. Also, all the arraignment is, is the formal reading of the charges. Next you may have a bond/bail hearing followed by the PreTrial hearing. That would be the FIRST time for a perpetrator to actually enter a plea of THEIR own. Because by then you will have been assigned a Public Defender.

I have a friend that has cats, once they have built an enclosed cat yard. The cats will be able to be outside or inside as they choose and still be safe.

Agreed my cat get walks on a harness since he loves his excersize but he NEVER free roams the outdoors for his own safety. He wears a bell collar to in case he does get out he makes enough noise he cant sneak up on things easily.
For some reason Europeans get really hung up about this. I’ve brought this up on Reddit a few times and each time several Europeans said “well there are no birds having problems where I live so my cat being outside is fine” and it’s like, no matter where you live there is a type of bird at risk unless you live in Antarctica.
It depends, in the city it is better to keep your cats inside, but if you have a farm or just live in the country you will know that nothing keeps the local pests out of your garden like a barn cat.
Just like live stock dogs protect the other animals on the farm, cats keeps pests out of the grains and gardens.
BLESS every single one of those neighbors - i was once attacked by an ex in a very public place and not a single bystander stopped or did anything. We think, "oh someone's being attacked in the street, obviously I'm going to help and so would everyone else" but you truly never know until you're in the moment. thats heartbreaking im sorry that happened to you.. its possible this 18 year old couldve suffered the same fate if her mom hadnt been there already fighting off the guy.. because at that point if anyone joins & it instantly is a 2v1. mom + neighbor vs attacker.. & while i truly hope i would have the courage to interfere physically or at the very least call the police - im not gonna act holier than thou & claim that i would when ive never had to decide. (for my own ego's sake, i feel compelled to add that i have stepped in to verbally defend people more times than i can count, especially if its a woman [i am 6'0 200lbs which gives me confidence most people wont ever have due to their size)
the point i want to make here, is that it takes a brave & selfless individual to be willing to put themselves into harm's way to save a stranger who is actively being harmed. it will be 1v1 the moment they interfere potentially unless the victim has enough clarity to help subdue someone who was just threatening their life, safety, & sense of security. & the unfortunate reality of our current world - less than 10% of all adults fit into this description.. that's probably generous as it is.
i truly hope you're never the victim of violence again & i'm glad you made it out of that scary & violating situation with the ability to share your experience.

The kidnapping story once again reminds us that the majority of these types of offences occur, where the suspect and victim know each other, and that social media posts depicting "stranger kidnapper" scenarios really do distort the real life issues related to harassment and stalking.
There were no plastic ties on car doors, baby seats on the road or paper stuck to the windscreen. Just a single individual with a plan and opportunity targeted at someone who they already knew.
The fact that the daughter in the first story took all the steps and still nothing happened tells me all I need to know about our justice system. Police and governors want to be tough on crime but not crimes that don’t look good to their resume like stalking or sexual assault.

It is sad. Although I wonder how much of that is due to the housing crisis in the U.S.
Dogs too. It’s infuriating how many “strays” just appeared after the pandemic lessened. Both of ours were dropped out of cars that drove off.
A LOT of people got used to being home all the time. Some of these people were lonely and wanted a companion. Others, always wanted a pet but never was around so this provided a great opportunity. Unfortunately, as the pandemic waned and people traveled more and social interactions resumed, many of these people realized they didn't have the time to actually take care of the pet properly and resume normal life. For many people, it was a short sighted decision made on a whim. I'm always someone who enjoyed travelling so I've never actually gotten any pets of my own because I wouldn't be able to properly travel or even devote enough time on a daily basis given my work (even though I'd like a dog).
People used to abandon (usually female and/or pregnant) cats at our house all the time, 3 of the cats I own were abandoned and the 4th was a baby of an abandoned cat. Theyre all neutered because dealing with abandoned cats you realize they proliferate like crazy otherwise, its really sad how little you can feasibly do because you cant really take in every single abandoned animal.
As a cat lover and owner, I have four, I agree that cats are an invasive species. Just because we absolutely love our furry little monsters doesn't mean that we can ignore the extreme damage they can do to ecosystems. One of my cats, Susie, was rescued off the streets and am so grateful that i was able to save her from that sort of existence. Plus catios are a thing and i would love to have one for my cats someday.
I'd love to have a catio! I try to give my cats as much screen time as I can during the warmer days. Lots of direct sun with cat trees in each window, but I'd love to have a space where they can physically at least go outside. Maybe I'll try to put together a little wood platform and screen project via inspiration from early 1900s baby cages 😂

the problem with this ideology is that it has real life consequences for the people like me and others who are actively trying to fix the problem.
this ideology promotes euthanization. they criminalize feeding cats. why? because they're "an invasive species." but they wouldn't BE an invasive species if the cities and states didn't STOP their funding for the programs that get these cats fixed.
we are now offered basically NO help because of this idea that cats are bad for the ecosystem. humans are the ones who get these cats and then don't take care of them. do you know how many people got cats during the pandemic and then didn't want them after and either let them outside to be strays or euthanized them?
humans are the problem period. and toting the mantra "cats are an invasive species" is HURTING our efforts to solve the problem. so no, it's not helpful or wise to say, sorry.

if we want the issue to stop, ask your cities to fund programs that get these cats fixed. the average price for getting ONE female cat fixed rn is $300 where I live. the programs that offered $30-35 dollar spay and neuters got gutted because of the classification of cats as an invasive species. it's stupid beyond belief. and I'm tired.

In my early 20s I went on a about 4 dates with a coworker, realize we aren't a good match and told him so politely.
He started stalking me. Thankfully my parents lived in a gated condo, so I informed the security to not let him in. One night, as I was walking home I saw him sitting on his motorbike near the gate. He did not notice me so I made a detour to use the side entrance. My heart almost leap out of my chest. Sometimes you just never know what they will do
From a psych POV, that mom was amazing. Bystander effect was real, and she beat it by making each person responsible for something; "Help me with him,", "Call the cops", "Close the door". If you ever have an emergency, always pick one person, and tell them what to do. "Get Help,", "Call 911". This can save your life and help snap people out of the bystander effect

That incident with the attempted kidnapping is wild. People don’t realize that anyone from anywhere can become someone’s stalker. I had a stalker at my job. He was one of the security guards and he used his post to his advantage. Luckily, when I filed a complaint with my employer they took it seriously and contacted the security agency with my complaint demanding an investigation. It took 2 weeks, but my complaint was taken seriously and he was removed from my job. I can’t imagine how long the victim was being harassed and was filing complaints before she was attacked. She’s one of the lucky ones.

I'm a vet and a cat owner, and I think it's important to also remember that outdoor cats are also dangerous to other domestic species, e.g. canine parvovirus (often just called parvo) is a virus that jumped species from cats. It's a very contagious disease with a very high mortality rate. And the difference between quality of life between indoor only cats and outdoor cats is clear where I practice. Outdoor cats are much more prone to trauma and diseases.
Exactly. If people don't care about the ecosystem and other animals, they should at least care about their kitties. People who let their cats out are either ignorant to the dangers or truly don't value their lives. I've seen people try to defend outdoor house cats with "they'd be bored inside!" If you can't provide adequate enrichment to an animal without endangering them, don't have pets!
I've had cats me entire life I get so annoyed at the people who think 1. it's cruel to fix their cat 2. they just let them out and then they disappear. I live by coyotes and mountain lions I wish they'd stop being so stupid about it. Also, I've worked with rescues with have do not adopt lists because people won't change their process then they just come back every 2 years because they let their cat out and it died or disappeared. Ugh.
Thank you for the context on Parvovirus, people don't believe me when I say my cat almost died to parvo when she was a kitten because they say "that's a dog disease" without considering there are different strains. She's never been outside and still she's been so hurt by outdoor cats.

We live with hundreds of Cat on streets, that author is right the real “invasive species” is us. We destroy the environment. I'm a cat owner. My cat only goes outdoors on a harness and leash. I've always been a firm believer in spaying or nurturing your pet. My cat is a menace enough indoors. I have no Intention of allowing my chaotic furrball outdoors. I've always been aware that cats could wreak havoc on any local bird species among others. It's a fact.
I agree with everything here. It's simply fact that cats living outdoors are a risk to the wildlife and the cats themselves, and I strongly believe in spaying your pets (especially cats and dogs). Especially if they're allowed to roam outside. I can understand some of the cat owners' upset as sometimes the language used can feel like an attack towards cats (especially when the people being against cats call themselves dog people - as Jackson Galaxy often says, people tend to look at cats with dog-coloured glasses, so as a cat owner myself it can be really frustrating how some people treat cats), but that doesn't negate the facts.
One time I was talking to a classmate about cats and I clearly remember her telling me how she had to let their cat out because "she looked so sad looking at us playing outside in the window 🥺" after the vet had told them that the cat shouldn't be let out for a certain amount of time (something was done at the vet, they let it out early). She talked about it as if she did something amazing, while I just looked at her in mild disbelief. Imo she exposed her cat to unnecessary risks.
I wish people did more research on cats before getting them. All of the things you mention here aren't that difficult to find and can come up pretty easily, especially on youtube.
Interesting. I grew up on a gigantic farm. I had four cats just because they showed up at some point and stayed. My dad was allergic so they lived outside or they could go into our basement for shelter. We had them all neutered and spayed and they all lived long lives and brought us many mouse offerings (we fed them of course but they still hunted). Now that I live in a city I see how just about everything I learned as a child is the opposite here.
@@borrrden while I believe it's better to keep cats inside, I know not everyone can or will do that. To be fair, a lot of people assume cats should be let outside and aren't aware or look our for the risks that it entails. Or they give up with trying to stop the cat from going outside. People should be more aware of the concept of catios (cat patios)! They allow the owner to let the cat go "outside" while also keeping the cat and the local wildlife safe. I feel like a lot of people who let cats roam also have space outside to put up some type of catio.
I'm glad that you at least had them neutered and spayed so there wasn't a possibility for more cats roaming about, and a farm is definitely a safer area for the cats themselves as well. I grew up in a city(/town by american standards) where we had a lot lof nature and people were spread out, but still enough cars and people to be a risk. I've heard too many stories where someone let their cat go outside freely and it ended up getting run over by a car.
@@sammalsikuri3828 for sure cars are a hazard. One of our dogs was hit years ago and I totally get the risks of an urban or even suburban environment. It’s just interesting to me how many things are different between rural and urban. For example people in urban areas have no hesitation about approaching a raccoon during the day but in the country we get it drilled into our heads that a raccoon during the day is likely rabid because they are nocturnal. Come to find out later that they are smart little buggers and changed their sleeping habits to be awake when there was a better chance of finding trash can food! That’s wild (pun not intended).
@@borrrden I could understand a valid reasoning for outdoor cats when it comes to barn cats on a farm, they're essentially working cats and if they don't do the rodent control then the farmer just will anyway and i'd rather a cat do it than chemicals/traps tbh

I actually avoided getting my cat spayed for about a year because I couldn’t afford the service, and quite frankly, I was scared of how invasive the procedure is. This sounds ridiculous, but after watching videos of the procedure, I had started to view getting my cat fixed as my little baby about to have a hysterectomy. It was scary for me to picture her going through the surgery. Luckily, my partner and my vet helped reassure me that she would be fine, and she was. One thing that brought me on board was the fact that getting a female cat spayed is actually considered preventative care For feline uterine cancer
I know some places give financial help for sterilizing! While it sounds invasive, especially if you try to imagine going through it yourself, it is way less dangerous for them. Vets have mastered and proven the usefulness of sterilization.
My cat legit perked up and became real focused in the cat story when you started showing footage of rats and mice.

Aussie here, I love my cat and I absolutely had him neutered as a kitten and keep him inside, he has a cat enclosure and goes on a daily walks on a leash and harness in the rest of the garden and the neighbouring park. This not only keeps the native birds safe from him but also keeps him safe from getting diseases from things he catches, from injury fighting other cats, and other dangers like getting hit by a car. I wish more people would think about these things rather than getting defensive about it.
Yes I do the same with my cats :) but we also live in a mountainous area with lots of coyotes, bobcats, even mountain lions. So there is no way for ANY cats to be truly “outdoor” cats in the first place safely, so it may be different from your situation.

Idk about where you are but here in the UK we also have to worry about humans hurting our cats, I'm sure it's every couple months or so I read a news article about the sick abuse humans deal out to cats they find out and about. Swear if anyone hurt my cats....
Definitely. I live in a small town and I’m on a Facebook group to keep up with local news, and literally every week someone posts that they run over a cat or a cat has gone missing. One woman has a pedigree ragdoll and so far it has survived being stolen and returned AND being hit by a car..but she still lets him out. The lifespan of outdoor cats is less than half of indoor cats. I couldn’t live with myself if I found out some effer messed with my cats. So they’ll stay indoors, and they won’t ruin the local wildlife.
I can't even imagine how terrifying and traumatic that kidnapping attempt had to be, so glad they escaped.

I love cats, I have 4 of them (plus a dog). I will NEVER let my cats outdoors. Not just because of the fact they're harmful to wildlife - they can get hurt so easily, especially by humans. There are people around my neighborhood who will swerve just to hit the strays around here. I don't want my babies hurt.
I'm a big cat fan! I have 3, all indoors. I keep mine indoors because they're actually happier animals when they don't have to worry about their safety. As long as cats have something to keep them entertained, indoors is a much better lifestyle for them.
No one argues why letting dogs run loose would be a bad thing, but imply letting a pet cat run loose is irresponsible, and you'll have a ton of people piling on you.

My wife is having an issue with a guy at her work about him not leaving her alone even tho she’s obviously married. We definitely need to hold these people accountable. I believe I have one myself, I'll see this car parked across the street, just sitting there in the middle of a parking lot for no reason from time to time. I'll purposely go out on my patio, be blatantly obvious as I take a picture of him, and then give him the death stare for a bit. I've thought about ways I could deter someone from stalking me or someone since we can't really rely on law enforcement to do so. Like, if they're around, shart my pants, dress like a bum and not shower for weeks, etc. Sounds crazy BUT the point of this is to get them to be unattracted and go away. Maybe when he comes around, she can start talking about things he doesn't like but be super enthused about the topic, or fart super loud.. but like a wet fart. Yo, desperate times call for desperate measures.

I’m glad you covered the NBC thing. I love your show and I’m happy and surprised it made the list. I watch Meet the Press every Sunday and I was floored and impressed by how quickly Chuck Todd went to the mats for Kristen Welker. I’m glad that there are people at NBC who choose to stand up to their employer when the employer does something they don’t think is right. I find myself doing that at work and it’s tough. It’s intimidating. If you watch the whole thing, I think you can even hear Chuck Todd’s voice kind of breaking toward the end of what he says, and I get it.
4:50 i agree with the biologist. as a cat lover myself, i can still recognize that cats are bad for ecosystems. they are,by definition, an invasive species. it's also dangerous for the cat to be going out freely because they can be hurt or killed by animals or cars. there are mesh cages and harnesses for indoor-outdoor cats! it's safer for both your cat AND your surrounding ecosystems to monitor your cat's "outside time". let them run around outside and explore and stuff SAFELY ❤
That woman in the first story is such s bad ass. Good on her for protecting her baby eta: it's crazy what humans are capable of when we love someone. The owner can make alterations to their home, like cat shelves, to give the cat more vertical space in their home, they can create catios that allow them to go outside and not interact with wildlife, or they can take the cat out on a leash and harness. We have one cat who was let to roam wild, unaltered. She ended up pregnant, but after a group of local children BEAT HER SO BADLY WITH STICKS SHE LOST HER EYE, she miscarried in front of a parked car. But yeah, it's cruel to her to be inside.

As a massive cat lover my baby boy wears a bell collar and walks on a harness with my dog just to make sure of his safety as well as the ecosystem. He is also neutered to prevent breeding at least in case he ever does get out, it really isnt very hard to keep your cat inside/walk them or if you let them out to free roam at least make sure they have a bell to make sure they cant sneak up on prey nearly as easily.
About the NBC story: man, that management dropped the ball SO hard. Such an example that if you don't listen to your employees before making a decision, then you're going to be listening to them twice as loud while you scramble to clean up the mess you make.

There's something of an era problem too here. Of course the idea makes sense, have a diversity of opinion to get different angles on topics and challenge the viewers. Not a new idea either. It's that the conservative party is becoming increasingly insane. Not just radical, everyone is falling into the increased polarization these days, but completely detached from reality. Supposedly the party leads should be more professional than a random talk radio addict on facebook but they learned the hard way that this is no longer necessarily true.
As someone who happily owns five cats: keep your cats indoors. Not only is it better for your ecosystem, it's safer for your cats. My parents had indoor/outdoor cats my whole childhood and we lost a lot of them. Sometimes we'd find the bodies (hit by a car or mysteriously dead, probably poisoned) but a lot of times they'd just be gone. If you want them to have an outdoor experience, catios or just screened in porches are great. You do have to have scratch mats and cat trees to have nice furniture, but you should have those anyway. You can even make a scratch mat from carpet squares and plywood or jute twine and cardboard.
same here! when I was a kid we always had outdoor/indoor-outdoor cats that ended up tragically dying, either getting run over or poisoned, and my parents finally caved in about 4 years ago, my dad found a starving half-breed siamese kitten near a gas station and when he brought it home he was so smitten that he decided never to let it outside without a harness 😂
Many people I know have "cat runs" enclosed areas on a balcony or in the garden, that are designed to give cats an area they can spend time outside but they are contained.

My wife and I work with cat rescue, and we've done TNR, (trap, neuter, release,) and I love my cats as they are family. And despite all that, I am of the opinion that cats are an invasive species. The bottom line is that they hunt like predators but breed like prey. That doesn't mean they should be killed, of course. But it does mean they need to be neutered. Anything and everything that can be done needs to done to make that happen.

Feeder Breeders are people that leave food out for all these cats but don’t trap them, so what ends up happening is outside cats get together for food and end up reproducing which creates bigger colonies. My wife and I have been trapping cats and taking them to the local shelter for their TNR program, we have trapped almost 100 cats so far and most of them have adopted. Very informative segment and hopefully it does bring more awareness to the importance of the TNR programs.
TNR programs have saved so many cats. we need more people involved and educated on these topics. thank you both for all that you do!
My Neighbor had about 30 feral cats i had to find someone locally to do TNR now there is only a few left after a a few years. My neighbor does continue to feed them. she just sits out bags of cat food.
A lot of people in my area have lost outdoor cats because that food people leave out and all the small animals that eat it attracts coyotes. Why people in Florida continue to let cats outdoors where we have coyotes, gators, bears, boars, and bobcats is beyond me.

i lived in a rural place throughout high school and we adopted a stray kitten who became an indoor/outdoor cat until recently where we made him an indoor cat. because the place we lived in was kind of janky it was easy for mice, snakes, and even once a skunk to come inside. But most of the time when that happened this cat was literally the last line of defense as he was an excellent mouser and he even tried to fight a 4 foot king snake. i don't know what else he hunted because he only ever brought deer mice

Yes, my cat was born into a feral colony but saved from the fires that hit our area in 2020 and bottle fed. He has a catio and stays inside. I've seen people advocate to leave kittens from feral cats to be "raised by mom" and it blows my mind. Leave them to predators, disease and more breeding? Also, if you need an outdoor ratter, terriers are much more effective. We had thousands of dollars in Rodent damage around our property prior to getting a Jack Russel Terrier, even with a barn cat and traps. Now it is not an issue.

Cat owner here, i have two large house cats and they only go outside under supervision. Common misconception is that cats cannot be trained but they absolutely can. I’ve even taken care of a bonus feral cat outside and he doesn’t even hunt birds anymore because i feed him good food.
Keep your cats inside, train them and neuter them. Nothings worse than a cat going into heat multiple times a month.
we live in a detached house and we are surrounded by old houses, so during our 1st winter at home we got a mice infestation. Mice even roaming on the 2nd floor bedrooms and poisoning didn't help. So, I took in a kitten from the streets, he adapted really fast and he does hunt mice, after we adopted him the mice eventually disappeared. So, yes, cats help get rid of rodents.
Biologist with a sweet kitty here! I love my idiot child and she will never set an adorable paw outside. She lives a rich and fulfilling life inside and I encourage my other cat-loving friends to do the same.

We got our cat during the pandemic. My friend found her outside the factory he worked at. She is the sweetest baby. I never let her outside because I am well aware of the risks with doing so.
I am a lifelong cat lover and have had cats all my life. I have also volunteered and run a cat shelter for many years. If more people had to deal with sick and injured stray cats, pet cats dropped off on their doorstep on the brink of death with terrible wounds, they would think twice about letting their cats outside. Especially in urban areas. Domestic cats are just that, DOMESTIC. Just like we don't let dogs run around unsupervised outside, we shouldn't let cats. Cats can have fulfilling and enriched lives indoors. I understand it's hard to convert a previously outdoor stray adult cat to be indoors, but a kitten under 6 months, regardless of being born inside or outside, can be trained to live indoors only. Also, as Bob Barker said: "Help control the pet population - have your pets spayed or neutered." Shelters are constantly overwhelmed during kitten season thanks to people letting their unfixed cats out to reproduce, and as much as people like to pretend all kittens end up in loving homes, thousands get euthanized every month due to crowding. No animal NEEDS to experience birth, humans are just projecting their own beliefs onto other species. As humans we are responsible for bringing cats around the world, we also need to be responsible for protecting local environments WE introduced the invasive species to.
Well, dogs are let run around without supervision, we do still have stray dogs, and that is also a problem. They can also have their ecological impact like in Australia where they clash with local predators. I agree with everything else tho! My friend found a young kitten in her barn 2 years ago and she was worried about where it came from and if it would survive.
I immediately offered to adopt him and fed him kitten formula, had him checked at the vets, and once he was the required safe weight i got him neutered.
He still remembers the streets though and he likes to be outdoors so i got him a harness and leash and i take him on walks. The neighbors get a kick out of it, i am getting exercise, and he is having safe, and supervised time outside where i can make sure he isnt a menace and isnt getting hurt.
I see posts all the time on facebook to look out for a family cat that was let out and never came back. I hear it all the time, "well my cat always comes back!" Yup. I'm sure your cat does, until they dont.

Hi there, that's a unique experience, good for you! I'd like to share mine, we have 1 feral cat and 3 outdoor neighbour cats at our farm (off grid). The first year she got pregnant in the fall and we never saw the kittens so we got her fixed because of how terrible that was. This will be our fourth year with her, she comes and goes as she pleases and is super friendly (loves to jump on your shoulder) and we've talked about finding her housing but we've all seemed to agree it would be cruel to make an outdoor cat and indoor cat. We feed her whenever she visits but she rarely finishes those single serving whiska pate things from all the fieldmice. We see her 3-4x a week now that she's matured. We know one day she won't come back, the circle of life and all that, lot's of predators but cats are pretty quick and can climb anything. But with little experience and absolutley without claws they won't fare well in cities with birds of prey or coyotes

I have two cats and live with my grandmother, one of my cats used to be a stray that I managed to convince to live with us and the other used to live with my neighbor. Both cats like being outdoors, but I've been really pushing my grandma to keep them inside if she can. She always says it's too much work to try and stop a cat from darting out, and that if we did stop them, they might get out one day and not come back because we "upset them". I showed her the news segment about cats and no joke, her response was "Poland probably has too many birds anyways." People really blame anything else other than themselves if it means they don't have to self-reflect. Thankfully both of my cats are de-sexed but they can still be a terror on the environment

There’s a major issue with our system when it comes to the safety of women especially when it comes to protection orders. My ex was abusive and started harassing/threatening to find me and beat my now husband after I told him to leave me alone for reaching out after he’d gone through a 12 step program. (This wasn’t the first time he’d tried to contact me). It escalated so quickly I had to call the police and file for a protective order. Luckily I moved away but upon moving back to my home state years later I found out that they never actually served him with the protection order and since he hadn’t been served, the order had been null and void. There need to be better safe guards in place and what’s the point of a protection order if they don’t get taken seriously or served.
@ashpace4497 there is no "issue" qith the justice system qhen it comes to protective orders, the reality is that the justice system requires evidence, and there is a presumption of innocent in all cases so if you go to court and say "Steve" is stalking you and say that it is because you saw him at 3 different stores that you were at or even worse things but have no evidence then "Steve" basically has to say "I didn't stalk her" and his words carry the same weight in court as yours and you don't get to keep "steve" from going places just because you go to them.

In my case, it turned out that they couldn’t reach him so it was never actually served thus for null and void. Save the “innocent until proven guilty” bullshit. This wasn’t a “oh no my ex tried to text me, get him officer!” situation. He had abused me, stalked me, tried to blame his suicide attempt on me, went radio silent, then decided to start stalking me again once I rejected his “12 step” apology that he sent me from an unknown number because his had been blocked. They didn’t call him in for a trial. They deemed the evidence I had against him and the abuse I’d encountered enough to grant a protective order. They don’t notify the person the that an order is possibly in the works against them unless it’s deemed that the protective order is needed and issued.
TNR is so important! Please support local TNR efforts in your area! They don't just fix the cats, they give them rabies vaccines and make sure they are healthy.

Guys, take note of this. Call out the behavior of men that far too often make women feel like they need to treat us with caution, like they're scared of us on the basis of our birth sex, like we're predators in waiting. That shit hurts our feelings and pisses me off too, but I'm not dumb enough to believe that that treatment is women's fault and that they've got no good reasons to treat us that way. Be outspoken in word and action against this kind of entitled behavior, believe women when they say this happens too often and this isn't some crazy freak incident that happens once every 200 years, and call out men when they're excusing or justifying this behavior, call out your friends, co-workers, bosses, any guy you feel safe to call out for this violent misogynist behavior when you see and hear it.
If you don't like women playing games with us, commit to rejecting and changing the social norms of men feeling entitled to women and acting angrily or violently when women reject them.

Women didn't get us here and it' be ridiculous to ask they get us out.). I said "no" to a guy I worked with and he stalked me similarly. He didn't abduct me, but he did everything to make my life a living hell - keyed my car, tried to get me fired, watched me constantly to find out who my friends were so then HE would go hang out with those friends and turn them all against me by spreading lies and assassinating my character. It all blew up in the end and my friends found out the truth, but those were a rough few years in my life where I felt very alone, simply because I wasn't interested in him.

My sister made national news and was asked to be on Ellen because she fought off a 6 foot tall 25 year old deadbeat when she was in elementary school. He tried to grab her and pull her into his car while brandishing a gun and she kicked him repeatedly in the shins until he let go and she could sprint home. Watching this video brought so many emotions because these instances are so small in the amount of instances of kidnapping. I am so thankful that the mom and the neighbors were able to save her, but I wanted to share my sister's story because it is VERY rare to escape kidnappers and I hope that this brings some more awareness.
As a cat owner in the US who has been in a lot of online spaces devoted to cats - I have noticed that cat owners in the US seem on the whole to be more willing to advocate for keeping cats indoors, and the people from Europe seem to, on the whole, view that as animal abuse and get VERY angry if you suggest that they stop letting them outdoors unsupervised.
I love my cats, but I have a friend who runs a self-run TNR in the Chicago area (shoutout, Feed the Beasts!) who works with a local rescue to manage the feral population near her, and the health problems these cats experience is ROUGH, especially when some of them ended up in the colony with injuries that had very clearly been inflicted by humans. Stop letting you cats outdoors, and stop abandoning them when you're tired of them.
As a European I disagree. Most responsible European cat holders are completely fine with keeping their cats indoors.
The few who are against it argue based on the reality that on average European homes are much smaller than American homes, so if you're not on a good income here, you might live in a shoebox where keeping a cat inside really might be bordering on abusive

@@insu_na In Switzerland most older cat owners I know would consider it abuse to keep a cat indoors. So does the local shelter (they won't let you adopt if you plan to keep your cat indoor).
But younger people tend to be fine with indoor cats/have them. I myself have an indoor cat and would never let him out. For the ecosystem, but also cause I'd be terrified of him disappearing/getting run over by a car or kidnapped.

Outdoor cats are also a risk to each other, especially unneutered cats. My cat was a stray tomcat for 3 to 6 years (we don't know his age). He was in really bad shape when he was trapped. He's a lot better now, but he still has so many bald patches due to the scarring, most likely injuries from fighting other cats.
He really seems to prefer life as an indoor cat. The one time he accidentally got outside, he just waited to be let back in
I’m SO glad that beautiful momma was able to fight off that monster and thankful that the neighbors had her back! That must have been utterly terrifying. I hope her daughter is Ok. NY is very much a “that ain’t none of my business” city, because wild things are happening all the time, people just tend to not get involved. Which makes me think she’s not only a BAMF but also a lovely person, they didn’t hesitate to help! 😮💨🙏🏾❤

We so poorly handle stalkers in America. It's so frustrating, this wouldn't have happened if the cops dealt with it correctly. This lady is a certified BAMF, she showed the love of a mother beyond questioning.
I am in *awe* of all the anchors and journalist speaking up. It really feels like they're done with BS and vocalizing it aloud has given them such a united front! This is so incredibly important in any time, but especially when heading into an election and 'fake news' was such a talking point. Major kudos.
I can genuinely see the motivation behind it. Wanting to have different political views on a program that is seen as an echo chamber. But they should have done their homework
I don’t think it was a good idea. This would’ve been a great way to have both sides of the aisle make their points and have them challenged by the other side. The point of “how do we know she’s telling her point or what our bosses want to hear because they’re paying her” can be said about those same pundits that are criticizing her.
@@cbzeej Given her previous behavior towards many of the people speaking out, they have every right to be pissed off at her hiring. There's other people that could be the "other side" argumentor, but they went with the name because of ratings.
I don't have a problem with the general concept of "both sides of the aisle". But even if you are going to hire someone from that "side", which conceivably is over 100 MILLION ppl, you then have to ask what qualifications narrow it down to that ONE person. For me, the FIRST characteristic is being a person who is acting in good faith. Inwould take a random college professor with right leaning views, who is willing to admit any flaws with his views or side, but still argues for them overall, over someone who's biggest claim to fame is they held a position of power.
So they cancel someone with different views and you see that as a good thing? They aren't "speaking up" they are saying what they were paid to do so that their echo chamber stays the way it has been for decades.
The kidnapping portion was SO scary omg. Those people were around at the right time to help. One of the many reasons why we have to continue to look out for one another. We are literally walking amongst nutty people.
I have an 11 month old daughter. When I found out I was having a girl of course at first I was so happy. But you definitely have this moment of pure fear of the world she will live in. With sexual assault stats and the little amount the law and courts can do with stalking. It is absolutely terrifying thinking you may not be able to protect your child. So happy the mom was able to save her daughter ❤
That first storey really scary/is relatable. I’m a woman and I live alone in an apartment building and my neighbour in the next unit tried to attack me once but my property management company evicted him almost immediately (I called the police at the time, but the management company helped when the police asked questions) . It made me feel safe in my building knowing that was the response. My apartment also has two locked doors you have to scan through to get in. Things can still happen though!! Someone can follow you or someone else in.
Just be aware kidnapping is pretty rare, while terrifying. Stalkers are the problem, and the fact that authorities are almost useless in punishment and managing obsessed people

Wow how brave of that mother. So glad she was there for her baby. As a young mom I’m always prepared for the same. I’m a rather fearful person but I know if someone tried to touch my baby it would be over for them.
My entire channel pretty much revolves around how bad it is for stray cats to be roaming the streets, even in the best of circumstances, so to see this becoming a more mainstream topic of discussion is really comforting ♥️
That’s amazing. In the USA alone billions of birds are killed by cats. And also their lifespan drops precipitously when they are outdoor cats.
I have three cats, I keep them indoors, but I try to take them on walks frequently when it’s not winter.

I actually just rescued my 3rd one off the street even though I swore two was too many 😭 I couldn’t bare to leave such a friendly vulnerable kitty out there and it breaks my heart that I can’t scoop them all up and whisk them off to safety! I’ve known so many people that just cycle through cats because they let them roam. They let the cat out, the cat doesn’t come back, they get a new cat, rinse and repeat. One family I knew in high school went through 5 or 6 cats in a single year.
It’s not just native species that are threatened by outdoor cats. The cats themselves are at a massively increased risk of premature death either from predation, getting hit by cars, poisoned, etc.

My family and I run a 501c3 nonprofit feline rescue and the level of idiocy you see with people allowing their cats to roam freely in urban areas is ridiculously high. The number of cats I’ve seen struck by vehicles or shot at by asshats with BB and pellet guns is alarming.
Doing this work is incredibly difficult and very expensive but we believe we are doing everything we can to make a difference, even if it is minuscule in the larger context. So far we’ve recused over 100 cats and kittens, got all of them spayed and neutered, checked for FIV and adopted many out. We received a new pregnant mother just the other day. It’s a never ending cycle.
I live on a very busy state route through one of the busiest tourist destinations in my state. I see cats ran over weekly. One was just smushed by a huge work truck in front of me the other day, I stopped but he was gone. The amount of people posting their missing cats on NextDoor is gross. Oh, also, we are near a nature preserve full of coyotes and there are a lot of farms with roaming dogs (another issue entirely)

@TheAngelofnv it makes me sick. These people treat cats like they're disposable. I know someone that has had 7 cats in a year and a half because they just let them out as kittens and they disappear or end up dead, but if you suggest they keep their cats inside somehow you end up the bad guy.
That kidnapping story is so horrifying! Too many of my male friends just dont understand when I try to tell them I dont feel comfortable going places alone.
I had a man flash me last week and follow me down the road and I was told I should have taken it as a complement instead of a terrifying situation.

RE: the cat story and a message for cat owners
I live in the rural Midwest, I’ve always had cats for the almost 30 years I’ve been alive. Please keep them inside not just for the health of your local ecosystem but for your own animal’s safety. Cat lovers can often forget about the pure hatred non-cat lovers have for these animals. I remember when I was in highschool getting rides home from classmates and sitting in the passenger seat in horror as they’d speed up and attempt to hit strays, it happened multiple times (with multiple classmates) and they’d always shrug it off with “what? It’s just a cat who cares?” I’ve known of several people who set out poisoned food bowls on their porches in hopes that they’d kill strays and runaways. This isn’t an isolated incident either, I moved around a lot in my late teens and early 20s, living in four states, and I’d hear of people doing stuff like that in every town I moved to.
It’s not a kind world to cats. Please, do all you can to keep your animals safe, warm and loved. I can’t imagine anything that cruel happening to MY cat.

Keeping a cat inside it's entire life is tantamount to animal cruelty, they will become obese, food addicted, depressed, and nerotic. But letting them out shortens their life and has the potential to decimate local ecosystems.
There is no right answer. But don't pretend they are happier inside.

@@dogmantko same with me, I dont hate dogs. I hate irresponsible dog owners which are unfortunately very common, id argue mire so than cat owners from personal experience. There isn't that many people letting their cats outside. But the people dumping their cats and abandoning them outside and the strays already outside who aren't neutered. Many cat people I know are even actively getting strays neutered. There is work being done, but the covid may have reset the work due to bad owners.
It needs to become mandatory for schools to teach kids on misinformation and researching for themselves. Far too many people believe things for face value on the internet.

As a cat owner and an animal lover, it is important to bring up topics regarding safe and responsible animal ownership. If someone had a pet boa constricter that was allowed to have "outside time", local authorities would be called, so why would you let your cat outside? Why wouldn't you sterilize them? I think a lot of people think that many animals are more wild then they actually are, and use that to push for a certain lifestyle for their pets
Your last sentence is so true. Don't even get me started on all the poor buns that are about to be abandoned after Easter because people think they'll survive outdoors.

thats pretty bad, but I would say the worst thing is the lasting injuries sustained during the rescue. Or the fact that there is a very low chance of the perp getting crushed in a hydraulic press as a punishment.

I live in an area where hundreds of birds migrate through and cats are such a big problem to them. I love my fluffy monster, and he loves being outside, but it's not worth his health. They live so much shorter lives outside, too - I live in the middle of the city.
My compromise? I take my cat out on a leash. He gets full run of my backyard, gets outdoor enrichment, and he doesn't get to kill the birds. It's a win for everyone.
