Yes, It is recommended to use the floor guide that is supplied with the kit. You can also substitute other methods if you do not want to use the one that comes with the kit.
Can it be reduced to 48 inches?
Yes, You can buy a 5' kit and cut it shorter. You can also follow page #6 of the install instruction for various options to adjust track length, stop, and slab width relationships.
