You've just witnessed one of the greatest guitarists to ever wield a 6 string axe! I'll try to give you the answers to your questions. The singer who you saw here is Sammy Hagar, their 2nd singer after David Lee Roth departed the band after his decade long tenure. This lineup consisted of Eddie Van Halen on the guitar ( of course), His brother Alex Van Halen on the drums , Bassist Michael Anthony who also did the lions share of the backing vocals, And singer/2nd guitarist Sammy Hagar. Eddie did the guitar work on Michael Jackson's iconic song "Beat It". Now that you've heard him....you'll instantly recognize that it's him playing on that song. His style is unmistakable! Iconic. ....legendary. ...influential. .. Inspiring. ....jaw dropping. ... master of his craft and instrument. There was absolutely only one Eddie Van Halen! R.I.P. TO THE G.O.A.T. EVH! As always, Peace and love from Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A!
Loved that solo on the Jackson album, he put his signature on it too, notes E D D E. Which pissed MJ off when he found out later after it was released.
He didn't accept money or a credit for for Beat it. He did it as a favour to the producer and figured no one would know or care it was him. He wrapped up recording in under an hour. What a beast.
Before he got signed to a label playing the sunset strip, Eddie used to turn his back to the crowd during solos so other guitarists couldn't figure out and steal his techniques. RIP EVH.
I've cried 3 times today. We knew he was sick but it's still a shock to those of us who lived through their career and went to the concerts. Thanks for being so respectful. RIP Eddie Van Halen.✌💜🎶
I totally agree, I cried as well, alot. Im 57 and grew up listening to Van Halen. Such an amazing and insane guitar player.. RIP EVH. We all will miss you. Love ya Ginger, Keep on Rockin!!!
The thing that always gets me when I watch this video is how quiet the audience is while he’s playing! Thousands of people are just in awe watching him. Respect. RIP to the greatest.
Not free-styling so much as stringing together themes from his most iconic solos. As a life-long EVH fan it's great to watch you see this and appreciate his talent. I put the enormity of his passing on par with Hendrix, Elvis, John Lennon, Prince...he was a true musical pioneer.
Thank you. After first hearing this, I wondered that exact thing myself. I wish I could have seen a show like that; I bet it was a once in a lifetime experience. If only I was a young adult in the 80s, rather than BORN in the 80s😆
He's freestyling dude that's what he was most famous for I seen him play right down the road from my cousin's house in a garage. In glendore California. He was bad ass then
I agree with your assessment of not only Eddie's talent but the others you mentioned as well were Iconic Legendary Innovators...Michael Jackson would be another on that exclusive list IMO.
He’s actually doing a little of both….He starts out with the song 316 he wrote for son Wolfgang, then freestyles some before going into eruption. Freestyles more and then moves into Cathedral (when the lights go blue) Then the slapping part is from Spanish Fly. RIP EVH❤🤍🖤
The day Eddie van Halen died he still couldn't even read music, what you see is his very unique way of playing, they even had to learn a new way to write music to understand the way he plays
@@ts-yh1yv your bullshit!!! He couldn't ever read music 🎶. He did that with his own brain 🧠 memory and his ears knew what sounds would happen on position
He was a classically trained pianist, so I feel the hype around the fact he couldn’t read musical notation doesn’t hold much weight. I believe he was self-taught and learned GUITAR by ear however.
Eddie didn’t invent tapping, but he’s the reason it’s well known and used so much today, there’s only a few recorded instances of people doing it before him if I remember right. He used to show his back to audience early on in the band’s career whenever he did it just to add to the mystique of what he was doing because nobody could figure out how he got his guitar to sound like that
I heard he did that because he was extremely shy at first. He didn't invent tapping but he had never heard of it before and he developed it after listening to Heart Breaker. Puccini was one of first to be credited with it by use of his bow.
This solo is actually composed of 4 differents songs, and some improve in between. I'll break it Down for you. When Eddie is sitting and smoking, he's playing a song called 3:16 (which wasn't recorded yet). He does some Improv into a song Called "Eruption"...then he does a little more improv.....when the lights turn blue, he plays a song called "Cathedral"....then improvs into the opening of a song called "Mean Streets"........ The 2 hand thing makes your thumbs into a V......and makes your hands look like H'S.....the Universal sign for VH!. (represents the 2 VH brothers in the band!
Yea , that last part is a little bs on your part . Eddie did not go , let me make my hands look like a "V" and "H" . That is all coincidence . And the very last string trill when Sammy comes in is actually beat it solo .
I was at this concert this was 1986 New Haven Coliseum Nee Haven Connecticut! This performance of Eruption was epic this was amazing! It was so loud in there It was so awesome!!
I agree. I have tried his style and I can't keep my right hand that still and just use a little wrist. I know he used the flat of the pick because it was faster, but I am lucky if I can pull of 20 seconds of that before my right hand and left hand are out of sync and I get muted notes. One of a kind.
going beyond the rock genre and looking at guitar totally , this is probably the single greatest guitar performance of all time just simply unbelievable .
Eddie Van Halen wrote the soundtrack to the best times of my life. I’ve struggled with the fact that I cried more when Eddie died than I did when my own father died and my father and I were very close. There will never be another EVH. Rip
As a teenager, I had a very dark and difficult time. Van Music saved my life. Edward was the Mozart of guitar players and all of their albums have touched me. The Drummer, Alex is Eddie's older brother. RIP EDWARD, MUCH LOVE and we miss you. 🤩❤️
He's got a script called Eruption, but he is freestyling it. Jamming it. He's using the song Eruption as a blueprint, then moving outside of it and being creative.
To answer your question: he's freestyling as part of the set... Lol... Likely it was similar, yet different every single night, and just as epic... I wasn't ever really a fan fan, but legend is still an understatement... The influence he had on SO many is ridiculous (see some Tom Morello in there?) EVH pioneered it all... The 80s wouldn't have been the 80s without him... RIP....
From what I understand his solo was always part of the show, and he kept adding to it, so you will hear parts of songs from the albums but every show was different. He invented some of those sounds himself, so I heard in the early days he would play with his back to the audience so they wouldn't steal his technique
@@jeremiahstevens3319 Serious: how many Guitar Player Monthly Covers was he on?... Lol... Always seemed like every other month, or, him beside someone else epic... 😆
Eddie is the reason I even picked up a guitar in the first place. I was a classical pianist for years. Broke my grandma's heart when I moved to guitar. Now in this concert Eddie is kinda free styling using several lead-ins and solos from different albums as a point of departure. This was Eddie at his best. I got to meet him on a couple of occasions and what a humble and truly generous guy. Never in my life did I have a guy greet me with a kiss on the cheek. That was his way. He was a dutch boy from the Netherlands. The Wolfgang guitar he gave me years ago hangs in my office with a picture of us just chilling. I am an old man in my late 50's now, retired and teaching piano and guitar in my spare time. I last saw him a couple of years ago when he was selling of some of his cars. The world is truly a lesser place without him. His brother Alex always played drums, Mark Anthony back then was the bassist, vocals was Sammy Hagar. David Lee Roth left in the mid 80's to pursue a solo career. In summary, the last line up was David and Sammy sharing vocals, Eddie and Alex where they always were, and Eddie's son Wolfgang took over the bass after Michael Anthony left. Michael Anthony wanted to return but how could Eddie choose anyone over his own son? Where does everyone go from here? Is there a band without Eddie? They'll figure it out. I will finish with God Speed Eddie. Rest well. Thanks for everything. I appreciate our time. Though short, it is indelibly etched in my mind and will never be forgotten. It's funny that Eddie started on the drums and Alex on the guitar way back in their youth. After a year or so they swapped instruments. The rest is history as they say...Go figure. Strange how things work out when they are meant to be.
That was a beautiful reaction. Thoughtful, sincere a very endearing tribute. Thank you. Eddie Van Halen first arrived on the scene in '78 and the stuff he was playing no one could believe. He was making music with his guitar like no one had ever heard before. He changed electric guitar for everyone whose came after him. The technique you mentioned is called tapping. It has actually been around for a very long time but Eddie took the technique to undreamed of new levels. So many techniques in this solo that Eddie either pioneered or made his own by how he played them. There are many great guitarists out there, Stevie Ray one brilliant example. The difference between Eddie and other guitarists is he innovated and changed the music. Personally I think the two most influential electric guitarists ever are Eddie Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix because both of them were not only great players but were innovators who changed the paradigm. Prime example is Stevie Ray we love him but the SRV that we love would have never sounded quite like he did were it not for Hendrix. That's no shade just pointing out a difference. FYI: Sammy Hagar introduced Eddie-David Lee Roth was gone by this point. Two Van Halen's in the band his brother Alex on drums. The original "Eruption" solo from Van Halen's first album is sprinkled throughout this solo as well as parts from other songs and a lot of improvising. Look up guitar god in the celestial dictionary and there'll be a picture of Eddie Van Halen. RIP.
The beginning where he is sitting is 3:16...a ditty he wrote for his son when he was born...the rest is eruption with some freestyle..."the solo that sold a million guitars"...took me months to learn the album version of eruption...he adapted the tap style from classical spanish guitar music...
Not exactly. He played that riff well before Wolfgang was conceived. However, when Val was pregnant, Ed would play it on an acoustic guitar resting on her belly. On the Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album, he gave it a name to reflect the day Wolfie was born...316..March 16th.
That thing he does with his right hand is called "finger-tapping" (or simply "tapping"). While not the inventor, Eddie definitely was the first to bring it to this level.
His ability to integrate rapid fire tapped harmonics in his playing really opened up a LOT. Anyone who thinks it's not complicated need only to try. It's an easy technique... just not to way he used a mixture of tapping and tap harmonics at warp speed. Yep, he definitely took it to the next level.
It's called tapping in the rock community, but the technique goes back 200 years or more in classical guitar. The terms there are hammering and pulling, I believe.
@@johndeeregreen4592 Yeah! I knew it was something like that. I teach at an art school with a classical guitar program, and I try to pick up the terminology.
Eddie you will never be forgotten. You taught me and thousands of other aspiring musicians your craft. You were one of my biggest inspirations since I was ten years old. I heard Hot for Teacher and I was sold. Thanks for everything! See ya later Eddie!
He's why I started playing guitar. I learned this solo back in high school and played it in speech. I was really sad when he passed. Thank you for this.
Two different Bands. Van Halen or Van Hagar. Many, as I, didn't care much for Sammy Hagar. So long, long ago. Woodstock is more my venue. Have a wonderful evening!🎶
You made me cry at the end when you acknowledged how a great loss this was to his fans. I started playing guitar because of him. My son now plays as well. 2 Generations of results. It crushed me when he died but I love watching people like you enjoy his legacy. Thanks man!
My young cousin could just hear a song and play it man..he learned how to do that cool fingering Eddie did! It's unfortunate that my 20year old brilliant cousin turned to crack and back in May 2003 we got a call that he had hung himself in a basement. Why? I don't know. He had no family..they basically rejected him in every way and turned to my family (his mom sis is my mom) Sad. THIS is sad. I'm sad. RIP Eddie.🙏 ✌🎶❤
He did take guitar lessons as a kid but never learnt to read music. He learnt by sound and sight. He could play anything he heard. It took 5 years before his instructor found out he couldn't read the music... RIP LEGEND 🎸🙌🤘
What you just watched is what a LOT of people bought their tickets to see. Don't need the songs as I've heard them all. Don't need the bass solo or the drum solo. I just wanna see Eddie go out and tear up the place. And it was worth your ticket price to see...EVERY TIME. The man will be missed as he is a legend and quite possibly the GOAT. RIP Edward.
Eddie didn't invent tapping but he did expand its use, it was done in the past but not at this level. He was amazing, my mouth drops everytime I see this clip. Gonna miss him dearly. R.I.P Eddie.
He was my idol since I was a teenager. Got to see VH starting in 1982. This is the 1986 tour & I was fortunate to see this solo right in front of me. Now when I watch, it makes me cry. I got a pick speifically from him that night. Next tour I got to meet him & get his autograph. I was in such shock when he walked by that my cousin had to hit me for me to say his name. He had to go somewhere, but, said he would be right back. Usually they don't come back, but, he did. We should all feel blessed to have witnessed such genius in a musician. He is the best ever. Period. And, yes, he had been drinking. When he came out, he had whiskey in a glass, but he remembered us, so thank goodness he wasn't totally drunk. He always had a smile on his face :) Thank you for showing this video. Peace & love.
EVH brought me here (1st time). All YOU need to know about VH is Eddie Van Halen. Now you know why. He showed out like that, with a smile like that every.single.time he performed for his fans. Despite knowing he was battling cancer for a long while, my EVH fan friends and I are still deeply mourning his death as though we lost one of our own. It's been a tough week that has not gotten easier. Seeing this today and noting that he has made one new fan in you, helps. TY brother. ✌️
Peace brother. I am still mourning the loss of my hero. I've never been impacted by the death of somebody I've never met. Except for JFK. And I wasn't even born when JFK died.
Van Halen is one of the first bands I ever got into.. Eddie made me want to play guitar... he was my teacher.. I used to watch him over and over again. In 2015 I finally got the chance to see Van Halen live in concert.. and at 60 years old this man performed a 20 minute guitar solo.. it was one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen. It was a hit to the heart when I heard about his death today.. RIP EDDIE
EVH was and will always be the pioneer of the Guitar...inspired millions to pick up the instrument and write timeless music that will always be remembered...R.I.P. Eddie have fun jamming with all the other greats upstairs! 😞🙏
Eddie was drunk during this performance, and I mean DRUNK. His eyes were also closed for the majority of this performance which means he was playing off of pure memory and feel for the guitar while hammered. The greatest of all time.
His brother is the drummer, and the lead singer was Sammy Hagar he replaced David Lee Roth when he went solo and the group never missed a beat. I saw them live in the 80s in Cleveland
When I watch Edward play it is like seeing him for the first time( 1982 ). To me, he is the greatest Ever. We will never see another guitar player like this man. RIP Edward Van Halen. Love and miss you. A TRUE FAN
Each section of the whole "solo" is bits from various songs over their career. And if you notice, he goes back to a triplet pattern with tapping; that is from the solo instrumental called, Eruption. He didn't invent tapping, but many would argue that he prefected it. 🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥 I bought this when it came out on VHS, wore it out; bought another VHS copy, nearly wore it out; bought again a couple of months ago on Blu-ray. To say I've watched this concert hundreds of times would not be an exaggeration... And I'm A DRUMMER!!! Eddie was THE KING!!! LONG LIVE THE KING!!! 😍😢😢 Trust me bro, you need to EXPERIENCE the whole concert, Live Without a Net. The drum solo is bad ass too!!
Thanks for the great tribute to a true musical genius. This piece is a combination of him stringing a bunch of his most iconic solos together and freestyling. Also the symbol being made by people's hands is the Van Halen symbol. The drummer is his brother Alex. Later in their careers bass was played by his son Wolfgang, but for most of the band's history Michael Anthony held down the bass. The lead singer at the time of this clip is Sammy Hagar. David Lee Roth was the singer during the clip of You Really Got Me you reviewed. Thanks again for a great celebration of Eddie's life and music. So glad you enjoyed this.
Let me start by saying thank you for the tribute. It is much appreciated. I also appreciate that you get how today's news is really devastating to us lifelong fans. Van Halen has been the soundtrack of my life to a large extent. I knew he was sick, but ...I think we hoped..we wished this news wasn't going to come. It sucks bad. To answer some of your questions, the hand thing you asked about was a symbol for VH. The blonde dude was singer #2, Sammy Hagar. VH is separated into 2 main categories by most fans. Early days with David Lee Roth on vocals and later, the Sammy days, also known as Van Hagar. Alex Van Halen is on drums so there were actually brothers in this band. As far as what you were hearing, this was not 100% a freestyle solo. It was a collection of some of the best known riffs from various VH songs. Eruption is actually a very short guitar solo that was something of a warm up EVH used to do. By itself it is dirty and powerful and worth a listen. Parts of Eruption are woven into this "solo," although it technically isn't a solo. It isn't even one song. Van Halen is a huge rabbit hole. I highly recommend you check out more. Hot for teacher, official video is a must see. RIP EVH.
The hand sign you asked about is referred to as "throwing up horns" and is like a salute to greatness. As for who is the best ever, there never will be one answer, when you reach that level you are just one of the greatest, like the top 20 are all #1, then there is #21. I have seen this reaction before but I watch it every time it comes up in my suggested videos and every time i get a few tears watching it and thinking that we los one of those GOATS when he passed. RIP EVH, I'm sure there has been a great show in heaven since you got there.
I love your reaction to EVH, it makes me feel good to see someone who had no idea a guitar player like him existed and be blown away like I was at ten years old in 1978 the first time I heard him really takes me back. His music was the soundtrack to mine and many’s childhoods and adolescence. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for calling him THE LEGEND HE IS. I miss him deeply.😢The gentleman on the drums is his brother. It’s there band. I was lucky enough to see him in concert.. R.I.P MR. EDWARD VANHALEN..
I had the fortune of seeing them before the limelight.. back in 76 when I was 12,, I followed them, saw them another 12 times after, Then 6 times after Sammy Haggar took over David Lee Roth as lead. They will go down as putting rock and roll in its proper format... and it was musicians like Eddie that make it possible. RIP .. thank you for sharing your gift.
I saw Van Halen eruption guitar playing 1984 it was the most amazing and incredible guitar skills in my life!!! EDDIE KEEP RIP-PING IT IN HEAVEN YOUR A LEGEND NOW!!!
He was my idol as a teenager in the 80's. Alot of amazing guitarists came out of that era, and I love them, but no one else had that groove that EVH had.
I used to have his look back in the day!! Eddie Van Halen is second to none because what most people don't realize is Eddie sounds good and different from all the rest for the fact that he mastered feed back!! A replica like Eddie guitar sale's for over ,$25.000.00 yes twenty five thousand dollars
Honestly, I have never been able to pick between Eddie and Prince. Both to me were the greatest. And their guitar playing will never be topped in my book. Absolute perfection.
I don't know, Both EVH and prince were phenomenal, no doubt. Although I truly think Neal Schon is the greatest guitarist of all time. Steve Lukather is right there at 1b. No disrespect to any other players at all May Eddie, be resting in the comfort of Jesus presence with prince for all eternity. God rest their souls.
What the crowd doesn't realize is he's playing classical music lol. It's hard to believe that he asked Roy Clark (From Hew Haw) to give him guitar lessons.

Eddie was the best there ever was or ever will be. RIP King Eddie.....
Before he got signed to a label playing the sunset strip, Eddie used to turn his back to the crowd during solos so other guitarists couldn't figure out and steal his techniques. RIP EVH.
It was a suggestion by Alex Van Halen for him to do that, cause that's what Eric Clapton used to do when he was in Cream.
This is what you get when a classically trained musician decides to see how far he can go. Love it. That's for the reaction.
Classically trained maybe on piano he never took a guitar lesson in his life
Self taught..... Couldn't read music
I've cried 3 times today. We knew he was sick but it's still a shock to those of us who lived through their career and went to the concerts. Thanks for being so respectful. RIP Eddie Van Halen.✌💜🎶
I was blasting VH all the way home from work. Tears flowing...its a wonder I made it home.😭😭😭
I totally agree, I cried as well, alot. Im 57 and grew up listening to Van Halen.
Such an amazing and insane guitar player.. RIP EVH. We all will miss you.

52 here. I remember the first time I heard VH in the late 70's. They changed the world!! ❤
Bull shit Eddie was a composer in a house with composers
@@ts-yh1yv he still couldn't read music, look it up
@@ts-yh1yv the only bull shit is what you’ve stated. He couldn’t read music. He stated that fact on one of his interviews.
Puccini was one of first to be credited with it by use of his bow.
no he was just the first one to ever compose using it
tapping used to be more for show than composing until eddie composed with it
I think Jimmy Page did it in live concerts
Steve Hackett, from Genesis was the first to bring it into the studio.
He didn't invent tapping, but he perfected it.
Yeah. He basically made it popular. Because not much did that technique, before. And then everyone started doing the same thing.
Michael Jackson didn't invent the moon walk. Does anyone want to see those that came before him do it?
He took it to a whole new level
He invented perfect tapping
Randy Rhodes?
The two hand thing is not for VH it is American Sign language for I love you done with both hands
Funny that he basically starts playing 316 at 3:16 in this reaction vid
Spanish Fly after Mean Streets as well
Think you forgot about Spanish Fly 😅
Yea , that last part is a little bs on your part . Eddie did not go , let me make my hands look like a "V" and "H" . That is all coincidence . And the very last string trill when Sammy comes in is actually beat it solo .
I was at this concert this was 1986 New Haven Coliseum Nee Haven Connecticut! This performance of Eruption was epic this was amazing! It was so loud in there
It was so awesome!!
I still burst into tears the minute i see that sweet smile .... that loss really hurts... we love you Eddie!
R.I.P Eddie! He was my guitarhero when I started playing guitar in 1985..
Like butter. His fingers must have had vibranium in them. My hand cramped 1 minute in....😫 RIP EVH
Right! :)
I agree. I have tried his style and I can't keep my right hand that still and just use a little wrist. I know he used the flat of the pick because it was faster, but I am lucky if I can pull of 20 seconds of that before my right hand and left hand are out of sync and I get muted notes. One of a kind.

2 things. My heart is broken today....And Thank You Van for this reaction.
He's got a script called Eruption, but he is freestyling it. Jamming it. He's using the song Eruption as a blueprint, then moving outside of it and being creative.
3:16, Eruption, Cathedral, and Mean Streets....some improv in-between to string them together
RIP....
He played the shit out that Jackson
From what I understand his solo was always part of the show, and he kept adding to it, so you will hear parts of songs from the albums but every show was different.
He invented some of those sounds himself, so I heard in the early days he would play with his back to the audience so they wouldn't steal his technique
@@jeremiahstevens3319 Serious: how many Guitar Player Monthly Covers was he on?... Lol... Always seemed like every other month, or, him beside someone else epic... 😆
...but some of those pieces/themes he's playing are from previous VH songs... so he's actually doing a bit of both..
Yes Perfected it
His ability to integrate rapid fire tapped harmonics in his playing really opened up a LOT.
@@MinisterOfMetal, hammer-ons and pull-offs. Close enough; you get the concept. Yes, it's a very old technique.
@@johndeeregreen4592 Yeah! I knew it was something like that. I teach at an art school with a classical guitar program, and I try to pick up the terminology.

He really was amazing, and never took a gutiar lesson, he just learned it.
And he customized his own guitars to get the sounds he wanted..

The GOAT
Each section of the whole "solo" is bits from various songs over their career. And if you notice, he goes back to a triplet pattern with tapping; that is from the solo instrumental called, Eruption.
He didn't invent tapping, but many would argue that he prefected it. 🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥
I bought this when it came out on VHS, wore it out; bought another VHS copy, nearly wore it out; bought again a couple of months ago on Blu-ray. To say I've watched this concert hundreds of times would not be an exaggeration... And I'm A DRUMMER!!! Eddie was THE KING!!! LONG LIVE THE KING!!! 😍😢😢
Trust me bro, you need to EXPERIENCE the whole concert, Live Without a Net.
Every since his passing, I still cry when I see him. Major musician during my time! Growing up with Van Halen was amazing. R.I.P
He really doesn't have to play behind his back, he is tapping with his pick hand, and play cords with his left, then tapping the solo ! LEGENDARY!
Both Dave and Sammy were great in their own ways. Saw VH in 2004 w Sammy, was an amazing show. Gonna miss Eddie, much love for doing this bro
I love your reaction to EVH, it makes me feel good to see someone who had no idea a guitar player like him existed and be blown away like I was at ten years old in 1978 the first time I heard him really takes me back.
