  • Never Perfect. Directed by Regina Park. 2007.
How are ideals of beauty influenced by race, history, and geopolitics? With a rich selection of film clips and archival footage, Never Perfect examines the dramatic rise in popularity of cosmetic surgery among Asian-American women.
In 2006, there were 11 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States, constituting an $11.4 billion industry. Most Asian women, in particular, experience acute cultural and social pressure to strive for extremely high standards of achievement and flawlessness. Among ethnic patients, the number of Asian-Americans seeking plastic and cosmetic surgery has risen 55% from 2004 to 2006.
Never Perfect follows the complex journey of a young Vietnamese-American woman - raised against a backdrop of American malls, movies, fashion magazines and makeover shows - as she struggles with her decision to undergo a cosmetic procedure known as double eyelid surgery.
In the process, this incisive documentary considers historical and contemporary examples of beauty, stereotypes and iconography within Asian and popular cultures in exploring the factors that influence body image and self-perception - as well as what it means to be an ever-evolving, multi-faceted woman living in today's global society.

▫️the idea of "race" is extremely complicated; with various-variable definitions.▫️on the one hand; it can be used to "distinguish" different groups~ types of human beings; but on the other hand; "race" has been used "many times" to: denigrate-destroy; de-humanize other- different groups of people; particularly in "adverserial situations; defining an individual; & or groups of people" as a threat; an enemy. ▫️in my opine> "if" i define people by using the term race; there's only "one race"; but that race is composed of people born with "various~ variable> skin-hair-eye color differen -ces.▫️👀 physically; the human "prototype" is the same> basically; a: head+neck+torso+ shoulders+arms+ hands+fingers+pelvic area+thighs+knees +legs+feet+toes!!▫️basic internal organs are the same,▫️▫️ height is not always "rigid"; can fluctuate amongst different groups of people; as can> color tints shades hues of: hair+ eyes; (i'm leaving out "cultural; & ethnic differences" in this text.) ▫️i agree that any "one group of people" dominating the globe-world, via "economic and military power"; generally determines; ▫️but not always "rigidly"; ▫️▫️what is considered to be "beautiful and also ugly"!▫️ mostly; these opinions come from males; and mostly women are the ones "defined";🪞🖼🎨🎬📽📺 particularly visually> in works of art; and the media. ▫️there's much more to say; but my honest thoughts "seem" to be "offensive" to some unknown entity!!▫️▫️however; i'm of the opinion; as afore-mentioned; a victor~conquorer; "power" determines "the standards"; in all areas!! ▫️▫️p.s. i've seen many so called "anomolies" to "established standards" defining race> "blacks" of many different skin tones; with natural blonde+red hair; sometimes freckles; having green blue grey eyes!! also "asians" that don't quite fit the "physical description" of what defines an asian; and those deemed to be "white" can fluctuate physically also.▫️▫️the bottom line is that an "individual" psychologically; should not define themselves by what they think is someone elses' idea of physical beauty!!
