This was one of my late wife's favorite songs. She passed away in 2000 of systematic cancer at 28 years old. Can't listen to this without tearing up. Great band, great song. Love the original too. Won't forget you Kellie. MYMLYL.
Thanks Mark. It does bring some good memories but makes me sad too. Seen these guys in concert a few times and really enjoyed it. Not just a great Canadian band but a great band period.
Say what you will but I live here in London On Canada and Brian Volmer, the lead singer lives a few blocks away, and you can knock on his door anytime, he turns no one away........calls his house Planet Helix which is really a museum to the band and Rock Metal in general........He and his wife Linda make you feel like family......very down to earth person is Brian.
That is so cool! There ain't no rest for the wicked was a fav; then the follow-up Long way to heaven...wow. So great to hear that he's as cool as I'd hoped!
I'm obsessed with this song. Especially love the guitar solos and him dancing in front of the drummer and his brilliant voice repeating the chorus with different variantions. And the the sweet ballet dancer just adds to it. Beautiful song.
I met the lead guitarist in Calgary Alberta Canada in November, 1985. The autograph he gave me was inscribed with the words, " It's a long way to Kitchener." We met in a bar called Ranchmens. Several good looking guys with long hair came into the bar. One of them approached me and asked if I was from Calgary? I informed the guy that I was in town to attend a concert the following night. I told him the band was called Helix. He smiled and said he was the lead guitarist. "If your the lead guitarist then give me your autograph on this sheet of paper," l laughed. I was pleasantly surprised to see Brent on stage the following night. To my surprise he signaled me out from the crowd. Great memories. Thanks, Brent!
With as many hits Helix had I'm suprised this song didn't make it more mainstream. It's one of the best songs on the album. Excellent video and production. The vocalis sings effortlessly. Love the video because all the musicians are just unpretentiously and masterfully doing what they do to make the song completely awesome.
In all my life, listening to different metal / lipstick rock and others, I have yet to hear a powerful ballad as this one. Even after 30+ years, I still enjoy the hell out of it.
I had the great experience of seeing Helix at a dance at my high school in the early eighties. Brian Vollmer lives a half hour away from me. God i miss those times. I'm glad that i'm not a teen now. There are no bands now that will be classics in a decade or two.
Brings back so many great memories. For me, this is what music has always been about -- Reminding us of certain time periods in our lives. Thank you, Helix!
🥰I PLAY This SONG ONCE A DAY AND MORE. The lyrics & The VIDEO INSPIRE Me To Do Better & DO What I WANT instead of 'WHAT OTHERS' PREFER ME to Do or Be. This SONG Gets me MOTIVATED DAILY. I LOVE The CONCEPT OF THIS VIDEO. The WORDS EQUALLY. TY@HELIX! 🎵🎼🎶
I always loved it when I would go into a dance rehearsal, and walk right by a gang of glammed out, leather-decked, feather-haired hot dudes. :) Happens all the time.
My style back then but today I've progressed to more extreme music and the hairs not shoulder length its waist long. Still love the good old tunes as well, im 57 now. Used to hang out at this bar played all kinds of music like this till they closed up.
Torontonian here. Yep I clearly remember seeing this on Toronto Rocks... I watched Toronto Rocks everyday when.I came home from school. Good days. Thos song fkn rocks! These guys did an awesome cover! Bravo Helix 🇨🇦 I love A Foot in Cold Water. 🎸🎵🎶 🇨🇦
I really appreciate you posting Helix's version. I am a child of the 70's, and I own a 45 of "A Foot in Cold Water's version of "Make me do" I think both are great to listen too. once again, it's nice to have both versions, and they are both really good.
fuck....when i hear this song, i just miss Paul Hackman that much more, taken from us way too soon, 22 years ago, Fuck man....Miss ya brother...RIP Paul Hackamn!
the eighties rock were a time when you didn't look for meaning behind the songs you just sat back & rocked out to the great music for a great era in time.
Helix did a lot of covers and they do all of them justice. I like that they weren't afraid of cover songs like many bands were. Their original songs are great too love this band.
It is with deep sadness that I must inform you all of the passing of Paul Naumann, lead guitarist for A Foot in Coldwater (this is a cover of their original by Helix). He passed in his sleep on October 20, 2009 at his home in New Mexico. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his son Paul Jr. and Hannah his daughter. R.I.P. Paul - we will all miss you......
Interesting that the lead guitarist in this video, Paul Hackman (dark hair) has also passed away. Paul was asleep in a van driven by a roadie back in about 1992 or 1993 in the Canadian west. Driving between gigs it seems the driver fell asleep and Paul was killed when the van left the road.
Great Great tune, reminds me of when things meant something and songs held memorys in a place deep inside you that only songs like this could open, like the one who got away.... old Brian Vollmer would have been in his 30's here, the coke swager and nerdie shy girls half his age really brings out that feel of the 80's to me. they did a great job covering this tune and one of my alltime favorate songs ever to this day, top ten rock balid of all time. love that swager Brian, you perv
LONDON ONTARIO...home of Graham Lear from Santana, Thundermug, Helix, members from Lighthouse, the late Dominic Trioano...and London rocks the park every year.
Boys from Kitchener Waterloo Ontario Canada. They did great. Went Metal because of the times. Hard rock since 1974. Well done lads.............Foot in Cold Water....yup
Helix...house band for Clancy's Tavern in Darkness, NS...circa 1981 - Brian Vollmer gave me a T Shirt "Helix Raunch N Roll...they went on from Brian hanging off a set of monkey bars to a stadium powerhouse after touring Europe...I remember them as a really nice bunch of guys...
When the leas singer had his other band back in the 90's - "The 7 Year Itch" I had the honnor of doing there sound and lighting for them at The Tunnel Rock Bar here in Sarnia Ont. Had a great night drinking beers and getting to know them all...kick ass band!!
Thank you so much. I have been waiting for Helix's version to be posted. I love "A Foot in Cold Waters" version, but was slightly ahead of my time. I am really glad its here now.
I really don't know what everyone's problem with Brian Vollmer's reverb on this song is............I think it sounds GREAT & I WOULDN'T have recorded it ANY OTHER WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely Cornered the Market on the Jerry Curl Mullet! At the Time I'm sure it was cool. You Still got me to watch this after what almost 3 decades? #TimelessClassic Good Job!
I keep telling the 20 somethings that it sneaks up onto you quicker than you think. Suddenly BOOM! you're 40! That was 8 years ago for me, and I'm still thinking "holy shit! what just happened"?!
holly shit! what a great song! music like this was really hard to come by when i was younger because i live in Utah. and they have allways sucked on great music
what ?? a video for this song !!!!!!!. never knew that. a very awesome song. saw them in concert opening for rush. i believe it was there grace under pressure tour. the guitarists tripped over his guitar cord and fell onto the stage. everyone was laughing. he got up and smiled, and kept right on playing. the show was at the CAPITAL CENTER, in LARGO,MD. no longer their. now, a brand new strip mall. lots of memories there.
I own a local cab company from listowel I never had the chance to meet Brian but I have talked to his brother on the phone the whole Vollmer family from the listowel area are great people Brian's mom I have met and drove in the taxi a few years back great lady
@Frankopinion Damn right. I was young in the 80's. Young kids nowadays don't know how nice it is to be able to go to a good old 80's rock 'n roll bush party and have fun without worrying about getting shot, stabbed, or lynched.
This was one of my late wife's favorite songs. She passed away in 2000 of systematic cancer at 28 years old.
Can't listen to this without tearing up.
Great band, great song.
Love the original too.

Sorry, i grew up a half hour away from Brian. He and his wife live in London now.
HELIX is such an awesome band.. and this song and video proves it.
This song should have been bigger. One of the greatest power ballads of all time.

Two words.. Toronto Rocks..
Anyone else remember watching this on that show?
I wish I could go back to the 80's my youth again so I could appreciate it the 2nd time around.
Man, I wish it was still 1985. I seen helix at the Memorial Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie in support of the Long Way to Heaven album. It was awesome.
I was a fan since the 80s, cranking it in my car.
I was blessed to see them live around 2008 ish.
Flawless
Legendary band.

Think helix's version has far better vocals with more feeling to them.
The original isnt as good.
Holy cow! I had forgotten about this group. This conjures up quite a few good memories for me. Big thanks for posting this. *hugs*
Love this tune
Canadian band just like Triumph and April Wine and Loverboy and so many other greats.
Saw Greg(Fritz) at Canadian Tire the other day. He has to be one of the hardest working, down to earth, guys out there. Love these guys. Always a fan.

Producer:
"How much reverb would you like for this song?"
