    I'm thinking about pranking a friend with the generation lock. But it may not be worth it to buy wood pieces for 250 dollars

      Hehe, challenge him for money. 300$ if he can solve it one hour!
      Low risk for you I guess! :D :D

      I wonder if someone speedrunning the generation lock can do it in an hour

    • @Mr.Puzzle
      @Mr.Puzzle  7 років тому +191

      The Schloss 250 has 4 rows and 6 positions (5 steps) per row. That makes it: 2*5*5*5 = 250 steps.
      The Generation Lock has 8 rows and 15 positions (14 steps) per row. That makes it: 2*14*14*14*14*14*14*14 = 210.827.008 steps!
      If you consider 1 move per second and spending 1 hour per day working on it, it would take your friend more than 160 years to solve it. So the answer is definitely "No", your friend will not be able to solve it in one hour. Also not during his entire life! The puzzle will fall apart before you reach the end! ;)
      In this case, the name of the puzzle is definitely no joke!

    • @SgtSupaman
      @SgtSupaman 7 років тому +61

      With that many steps to solve, at one move per second (working nonstop), it would take about 6 years, 8 months, 10 days, 3 hours, 3 minutes, and 28 seconds. So it can be done in one lifetime...if you're really determined (or if you have a group of buddies to pass it off to so someone is always working on it).

      So far, I've broken into 2 locks that have the shell and a 4 digit combination that holds the keys to a house. The first time was because they gave us a combination that didnt work so I picked at it to get into our new home. 2nd was a few weeks ago getting into our old house in Mississippi when the city thought it was foreclosed but we still had mortgage payments on it.

      It's a big base 6 counter. The bottom row is the adder. This lock is 555 in base 6, which is 215 in base 10 (extra steps are needed to get each pin back to the beginning) The generation lock has you counting to 10077695 (555555555 in base 6) and if we assume that's about 10100000 steps total, and that it takes an average of 2 seconds to slide all the pins, then that's 20200000 seconds = 5611.111111... hr = 233.796296... days. Nonstop. If we say you have 10 hours a day for eating, sleeping, and... excreting... then it would be ~401 days total to finish. That's 1.1 years, so idk where the other guy got 80...

    The moment I looked at this, I immediately knew what the solution was. It's literally the same concept as brute-forcing a pin-number lock. You start at 0000, go to 0001, 0002, 0003, ect and so on and so forth, until you reach the answer which would be 9999. Or, in the specific case of this "puzzle" it would be 0250.

      It literally isn't. Brute forcing a pin number is a slow alternative way to find the combination to the quick way. This lock doesn't have a quick way. Also, with a number lock, you'd probably be done somewhere halfway. At least, you'd never expect the code to be the last number you try. In this puzzle it IS (and always is)

    Build it less open conceptly and out of hardier materials and combine it with an actual combination lock, and it looks like it'd be an excellent lock; intruders would not be expecting it, so even if they had somehow found out the combo, they'd be stymied by the additional "combo" puzzle. Plus, even if they knew the solution to this, it would take so much time to complete they'd get themselves caught if they tried.

    It's also a tool to teach base 6 numbering system. Each time the bottom peg is slid left or right it counts another digit on the upper 3 rows. If it were turned to the right It's easier to see. After one row counts to 5 the next row starts with the number 10 (one zero) and counts to 55 (five five), which is like 99 in our base 10 system. They start at 000 and count to 555. The next number is 1000 but woud require another row. A simpler version could be made to teach binary.

    Hello Mr Puzzle, I have some experience in camera work and with me doing some research in the field and watching videos simular to yours. It's just 3 things : if you're going to include a time lapse in the video sometimes prople would like the time displayed so they can see things like the time rate. It's also something that can be usefull for your reviews I have seen some when the time lapse was in motion they went further by taking a portion out. Last I just wanted to ask you did you ever do bigger version of this? Thank you for you reading, and if you did a link would be nice
