    HONESTLY I’d just be happy if Garmin supported naps in their sleep data (multiple sleeps) would be a simple update. Also as somebody who’s nocturnal I usually don’t sleep until early in the morning which the watch recognises as a new day which confuses. Things on the watch. Cheers for the video

      absolutely. This is one thing that steers people to fitbit over a garmin. I don't see why it can't be done. And body battery should be adjusted accordingly and also increase accuracy of battery levels between awake movements. not just total length of sleep time. For example. If I wake up every hour or two for 8 hours I shouldn't have more body battery then if I slept for a straight 4 or 5 hours with same low stress levels.

      I think Only Fitbit does support 24 monitoring where polar is limited to the longest sleep you had and there’s limitations even for manual updates, garmin has more control but it would be great if they support naps.

    Thank you very much for all the great information your channel provides (always a like click). I was hoping that as more watches are providing sleep information that a comparative analysis could be done -- like what you are doing on the GPS and Heart Rate comparisons. This would help to validate a watches algorithms for determining sleep cycles. Would be super cool, but it might mean you are wearing two or more watches to bed. Thank you -- Keep up the great work!

  • @hngldr
    @hngldr 4 роки тому +9

    My question is whether you can have it use this info to pick a more optimal time to wake up. I specifically bought a Garmin to use with Sleep as Android because then I can have it change my alarm to wake me up when I'm already sleeping the lightest in a given 30 minute window. This has made a HUGE difference in how much I keep hitting snooze - saving me time, energy, and ridding me of that awful experience.
    It's really strange to me how so many people track sleep and then do absolutely nothing with it despite there being a great thing to do with that data!!!
    I also would love to have it natively on the device, as the Sleep as Android app goes through periods of buggy-ness and in general is often overcomplicated/hard to get it to do quite what I want.

    • @samayres-mcgonigal3149
      @samayres-mcgonigal3149 4 роки тому

      Do you manually adjust your alarm to wake up when you're sleeping lightest based on the data? Or is the change in alarm automatically changed ?

    • @hngldr
      @hngldr 4 роки тому +3

      @@samayres-mcgonigal3149 You set a window.
      Say for example I need to wake up at 7:00 AM at the latest. The default window is 30 minutes (though you can set it differently). It then tracks my sleep and wakes me up at whatever time from 6:30 to 7 AM that I'm sleeping lightest.
      Bigger window means better chance of it being able to actually find a section in said window where you're sleeping lightly, but too big and you may wind up waking up a lot earlier than you need to. I personally found one hour works best for me, but it depends on the length and consistency of your sleep cycles.
      You can also have it command lights, slowly fade on music (and go from gentle music to more intense), among other things.
      But it's complicated and I find they ruin features often and for long periods of time before fixing them. For example it used to be that you could have the lights fade on slowly like a sunrise, but now it appears the ONLY option is a flashing on and off which isn't much more gentle than a normal bedside alarm.

      Yay, another Sleep As Android user! :) I also bought my FR935 specifically because I could use it with the Android sleep tracking app. It's too bad that it uses so much extra battery compared to the native sleep tracking, but honestly the FR935's sleep tracking is really poor by itself, it can never figure out the exact time of my awake/sleep times even.
      Sleep tracking is super useful, both for long term trends, and for waking you up in the right state, as you say. Not sure why more people and companies are not paying attention to it.

    I still think Fitbit is doing a way better job tracking sleep than any other device right now (Garmin, Samsung, not sure about Withings or Apple watch 3rd party apps). I own and wear in parallel a Fitbit Ionic and a Garmin Vivosmart 4. I use the Ionic for sleep tracking and smartwatch features + GPS and the Vivosmart 4 for SpO2, Stress tracking, Body Battery and V02 Max. Nobody says you can't use both, no compromise, one looks like a watch and the other one looks like a band, so you don't look like the ultimate geek freak :D

    I hope it is pushed to the garmin forerunner 245 users too, the current version could use improving. I understand the garmin 2 year product cycle would make it a cost issue for this price tag, but it would do wonders for continued customer confidence and loyalty to the brand to have a 3 year software update support cycle, especially as cheap gps watches from chinese brands get good (and most importantly, because they also can license the same thing because of the scale of expected sales).

    So what are all the official metrics? I see first beat has “Sleep Score” and “Sleep Coach” on their website under their offered services. The sleep coach looks really nice if that’s what’s offered because it seems to offer suggestions based on sleep quality the next morning. Regardless, on First Beats website they claim that sleep score is derived from ANS activity while sleeping which would put this in direct competition to polar sleep score and perhaps nightly recharge. Polar should take note because a stand out feature that made their platform a lot more polarized (pun intended) may now have a new competition with sleep score on the Fenix devices.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  4 роки тому +2

      For sleep now, they’re specifically leveraging multiple components out of what Firstbeat dubs their ‘Firstbeat Sleep Solution’, which includes three core components, though, Garmin appears to be leveraging only two of those specifically.
      - Sleep Detection Component: This is where Garmin gets the time you fell asleep and woke up, as well as the sleep stage detection (Awake/Light/REM/Deep)
      - Sleep Analysis Component: This takes the Sleep Detection bits, and then analyzes the components to determine a sleep score and a small text explanation. Additionally, the ‘restorative quality’ (e.g. good/fair/etc), is based upon HRV. HRV is also used to determine/show the Stress & Body Battery bits elsewhere in the watch (also FirstBeat features).
      Note that there are other standalone features that Garmin isn’t leveraging. For example, there’s the Sleep Quality Assessment module. But Garmin is basically getting that data from the Sleep Analysis feature, whereas the Sleep Quality module is used by Suunto for the Suunto 3/5/9 watches.
      Additionally, Garmin isn’t at this point leveraging the Sleep Coaching feature (the third component of the Firstbeat Sleep Solution), which is sorta the long-term end-game of this line of thinking. The idea that you could take all this underlying sleep data and then give *specific* training focused recommendations based on that sleep. In other words, if you got three hours of crappy sleep from a redeye flight or screaming babies, it’d say ‘Skip the run tonight’, or ‘Make the run a bit easier’ or such. You can see a rough demo of that concept on the Firstbeat site.
      Note that Polar does use ANS for sleep related metrics in the Ignite, Vantage M, Vantage V, and Grit X.

    • @jkljkl6
      @jkljkl6 4 роки тому +1

      @@Dcrainmaker Hi Ray. the thing that I struggle with is Garmin say that for a HRV test you should use a chest strap as optical isn't accurate enough to measure HRV yet the stress measurement and body battery is based from the wrist based HRV. How's that work (I assume it's degrees of accuracy)?

    • @nostoneunturned6291
      @nostoneunturned6291 4 роки тому +1

      DC Rainmaker Thank you very much for all that information. I had a hard time deciding between the Grit X and the Fenix 6 because of Nightly Recharge and how Polar was able to leverage the nightly HRV measurements. I like that it give me advice on what to do with them. I ultimately in the end gave up nightly recharge and sent the Polar back in favor of the multitude of extra features the Fenix offered me. I am glad we are finally seeing some cohesion of data with these platforms. My background is in exercise physiology and I have a pretty heavy interest in HRV as a tool for detecting levels of training load. The issue, however, is how to measure HRV. I think polar had the right idea of using nightly trends and felt this was better than a single morning measurement. Whoop had potential too but we all know how that went....I also like how Stress Score on First Beats end helps me see how much my HRV isn’s recovered after a heavy day of intervals and life stress. With this new bit of information from the sleep score it seems everything is finally becoming a little more holistic. Let’s just hope sleep coach isn’t a Fenix 6 Plus future feature with an exclusive license for that device only haha.

    I read from Matthew Walker that the only way to have good sleep data is to do it in a lab as the data acquired with the hearth rate monitor and gyro meter is not good enough to determined whether you're on REM or Stage 1 to 5 of deep sleep. So really wonder how good at sleep tracking this thing is.

      @Dcrainmaker  4 роки тому +2

      It depends on what you want out of it. I've never found much value in sleep stages/phases. However, tracking the rough amount of time I've 'slept' each night is valuable longer term.

    I bought Fenix 7, it is not able to detect itself when you fall asleep, you have to set a time interval in which you think you will sleep. I can sleep 5 hours a night, he considers 8. In the end he shows me that I slept 8 hours and that 3 of them were REM. Is there another way to calculate yourself? There is a Fitbit at 200 euros that does this perfectly, you don't need to spend 600+ euros.

      The Samsung Galaxy Active 2 can track your sleep, any sleep (not just the night one, also the naps). I use it and it works really well. don't know if it's better or worse of the Garmin, or if its data are good or not. I'm just a normal user and I bought it for it smarwatch features, the sleep tracking it's a bonus :)

    I have a Fenix 5S and find the sleep tracking terrible. It's near useless to me tbh. I had a Fitbit Charge HR and an Apple Watch 3 and found the Apple did the best job (by far) using a 3rd party app. Fitbit was close, Garmin a distant 3rd. This is based on my own manual tracking of when I went to bed, woke up, or got up in the middle of the night. I gave up on sleep tracking with Garmin, using it only for activity tracking now.

    • @UncleY4nn
      @UncleY4nn 4 роки тому

      Sadly, nothing will roll down to Fenix 5. Even the 5+ will not get new features. Buy a new watch, if you want new features. That’s Garmins strategy.
