I'm with Tom. A second shower is a great idea.
Yep. Especially if they have horses. Somewhere to wash off without tracking mud etc through the house.
I totally get what Dawn’s staying, but I’m also in the Second Shower Club, because I know of families who select a two-bedroom home, and have multiple children sleep in one room and the parents in the other. Having two showers is those cases can be highly beneficial. Dawn and Tom, thank you for blessing us with joy, delight, encouragement, and the love from an inspiring family! Stay encouraged you two!!!
I think the second shower is needed. With that outside door…people can come in from outside horse work and clean up, put clothes in laundry, before coming upstairs.
Exactly! Wish I had that…
Leave window, add shower back would be my vote. A working farm (even a hobby one) would definitely make use of an extra shower that's not in the main living space.
Absolutely a shower. No need to remove window. If you ever add the third bedroom you will be totally sorry there is no shower In the basement.
I think a second shower, 60" wide if you have the room, would be great on a farm. They could come in through the basement door to clean up from the barns or if their dog gets dirty bring it right in and shower it off without tracking the muck through the main living area.
Yes. Agreed.
I’m in Tom’s Second shower club
I have a window in my shower and I love the light that the whole bathroom gets because of that window.
Same with my shower. The window isn’t even frosted, although that is a possibility
Me too!
Mine isn't either but it is at my head level. LOL@@victoriaorme1564
Well that’s nice but it doesn’t exactly help a contractor who puts in full surrounds 😁 You just added a slew of tile work to the schedule 😜
Yeah it sure would IF he chooses to keep the window. I don't know if I would since it's in the basement. LOL@@VanetaRogers1
I’d want a full bath in the basement. Otherwise, it’s really big just for a toilet. I like the window, even in the shower.
I vote keep the window and definitely put in the shower. It will be very appreciated on a ranch/ farm. (Speaking from experience.)
With the intention of it being a semi-working farm/animal property an extra shower would be nice for extra dirty kids, dog washing, etc. or simply if a family member of the renters spent the weekend and there was an additional bathroom to offer with some privacy.
Absolutely.
Even just outdoor shower...
YES!!!
I agree. Second shower is a necessity. So is a sink in the bathroom. You have a toilet; you need a sink.
Agree!!!
Just what I was thinking!!!
Would not have to use upstairs bathroom when coming in from farm etc!!!
Great asset for a farm!!!
I was raised in a one bathroom farmhouse. It had a very rudimentary shower in the corner of the basement . my dad milked cows twice a day. he washed the milking equipment twice a day in the basement between the water heater and the shower. He also showered there twice a day. His day job was running a Gas Station in town. He was a very hardworking, busy man. I think you need a shower.
Rural Wisconsin here! I have seen some very rudimentary basement showers!😂 Quite useful though 😂
2nd shower is a MUST if you expect a family to rent there. And keep the window. Natural light in a bathroom, especially a basement bathroom (& with a low ceiling) is a game changer.
You’ll never regret putting that extra shower in.
YES Shower it could have 4 or 5 people. Mom, Dad, and 2 or 3 kids. A second Shower and or bath is a MUST
I vote for shower downstairs too. Put in cheap tile on the floor so that it drains into that drain. Maybe put the water and knobs on the other side [Right side) so you don't bonk your head on the upper drain pipe. Get a cheap tub surround. Cut it out for the window if need be. Shower curtain can stay open most of the time for light. Or just keep a clear shower liner. You will be glad you did!!
Don’t think you’ll be sorry moving forward with the second bath/shower. Easier and cheaper to do it now, rather than later.
Absolutely a shower Tom and Dawn. With a door from the outside there will no tracking in the house up above. Animals and mucking means shower put to good use downstairs. Looking good!
I like the window even in the shower and I like a shower in the basement. I've had a window that size in a shower and it was fine. A big value add to have another shower. love y'all!
Since this is a farm with likely horses or livestock, I think it would be good to have a second shower in the basement for washing dogs or even muddy farmers! Wouldn’t need to be fancy but would definitely be valuable!
You do a great job Tom staying on top of things and balancing family life and also doing the YT channel. That’s truly impressive.
Tom, you are my hero!! You are so knowledgeable, not afraid to take on anything, and you are so sweet and loving to Dawn and your kids!!
American Hero!!!
Second shower would be awesome. Also, renters could put a bed down there without it being a designated room. It could work for them.
Our first house when I was first married was a two-bedroom house and had a window in the shower. The light was nice. You can do the frosted glass contact paper over it should you ever decide to add a shower.
I clean for someone who has their tub/shower with a window, they just put a little curtain across the window. Super simple. ❤or frost it like others have said. Curtain is easier.
Can't go wrong with a 2nd shower!
Dawn you are so lucky to have a husband that can make your visions happen. Good luck Tom with getting farm house completed
Love the idea of two doors into the bathroom. Shower yes! And third bedroom yes. Larger pool of renters.
Gorgeous sunrise! Yes on second shower!
Tom, I wouldn't do a tub/shower combo, but a walk-in shower in the basement would be fantastic, and that window just needs to have some of that frosted film applied to it. Whatever you guys end up doing will be perfect. Wow, removing the deck sure made the basement brighter, great call.
Every bathroom in my humble opinion needs fresh air in it. Fresh air seems so much healthier than a vent fan. Just my opinion. When it's all clean and open up to the sun and air it just seems so much healthier. Growing up in the Midwest where we always had windows in the basement and the fresh air also helped keep things not smelling so musty. Excited to see it done and rented. You have done a fabulous job on all of it!
Blessings
I'm for the second shower. Yes it's a two bedroom house, but I can see a renter possibly making a bedroom in the basement by just putting up screens to separate and for privacy. Just saying it could happen. Love both of your channels.
I think a shower would be of more use than a large room with a sink and toilet in, it could also increase the rentals potential, it would definitely make the renters feel like it’s a good deal.
100% Keep the window!!!! I think bathrooms without windows are a bit grim. I think a shower is a good idea if possible but not essential as there are so few rooms. Can you tile the wall so that the window is left exposed ? In my bathroom there is a window which is half behind the bath/ shower, and it works fine for me! (But I live in a flat in London that was build in 1904…. I’m not sure they were big on showers back then 😂)
I agree with Tom. A home should have a second shower.
Idk if anyone has suggested this, but why not set up the shower to the right of the window w/ and grade it so the water flows out towards the drain in its current position. (No concrete cutting required.) Then just tile around the window. :)
I vote to move the drain and keep the window, second shower would be such a blessing!
If you're focusing on a horse/ livestock renters a second shower is a plus
Hi Tom, love your videos. I think a shower in the basement would be a very good idea if you can move the drain to the other side of the floor and keep the window.
What about skipping the tub, keeping the window and installing a corner shower?
Just want to point out that your renters may never want to leave! And you might not want to lose them if they’re great renters. So you might not even feel you have to do further renovations for quite a long time.
A little powder room off the laundry is super nice. I think it would be fine to keep it simple.
Shower, that way if something happens in the main bath, there is a backup.
Do the shower and put it to the right of the window. It will be work to move the drain but if you get it done now you won’t have to worry about it in the future. Plus who doesn’t want an extra full bathroom? Your renter’s will definitely appreciate it!
If there is a bedroom down in the basement, I think there should be a shower down there too. As someone who lived in the basement of a house when I was in college, I really didn't like having to go upstairs to shower. Also while I was using the upstairs shower, the family living on the main floor couldn't access the toilet. We eventually put a small shower in the basement bathroom and it was life changing for the better.
Needs a tub w/shower. I have a window in my shower. It’s works.
I had a friend who had cattle and grew beans and corn on the farm while he grew up. The basement shower was used daily after chores were done. The dirty clothes were tossed in the laundry, everbody showered in the basement.Clean clothes were down there too. No dirty, stinky, clothes or family were ever allowed upstairs. It was a great system as there were 6 kids and Dad doing chores. I dont think it would have to be fancy, just functional. Maybe just a decent floor and enclosure for the shower. Keep the window, cover it with that opaque film . There will be more light in the bathroom! You and your family are amazing, Tom!! And you are so precise with the skidsteer!!
I agree. Team Tom. Definitely need a second shower/tub on a farm/hobby farm.
I'm on the add the shower and keep the window train. Sorry! You've done a fantastic job so far. We (my husband and I) love catching up on what you're doing each week. Be safe!
Appreciate you bringing us along on this project! Great job. Great family.
I'm in the 2nd shower club! Love the progress. Gorgeous sunrise!
It’s the little things that slow us down. Congratulations on staying so diligent and making things happen!
My dad put a second bathroom in our basement and it was wonderful. With everyone getting ready for work or school each morning it was helpful. I would keep the window for natural light. You can put a window film over it to allow light but no one can peer in.
Tom you are. amazing ! Knowledgeable and entertaining 😸
Super happy for you how things are shaping up.
What about that frosted static film for the bathroom window for privacy? IMO adding a shower/tub downstairs widens the market of potential renters. I'm sure you can get something for a decent price that can be salvaged when you raise the home?
Walling over the top of an old window is asking for future trouble.
And the house is in the middle of a large plot of land. Who, other than the horses, will seek to peek into that window in the basement???! Use a curtain, shutters, or frost the window if you think you need to, but I wouldn’t get all hung up on it.
Have lived in 3 places, including my current house with a window over the bath/shower. Its nice to have the light and great to be able to open the window after showering to avoid damp/condensation.
Move the drain over to the other side and put in just a shower no tub
Finding damage to the house when you removed the deck isn't surprising, that's just how it goes when renovating an older house.
Being a traveling Grandma, I would love a shower in basement with toilet and vanity. Might not get used all the time but super nice to have a place to camp out when visiting. 3rd bedroom not big deal if sofa sleeper in basement for guests. And since it is a basement, leave the window. Easy to put occlusion film over to still let in light.
Love your reusable porch. Love to watch y’all put in a second shower. I love seeing these homes come together that you have put so much TLC into. Way to go! You’re both awesome people.
I don't know about your area, but renters in my area would use the basement weather it is designated as a bedroom or not. Unless your lease specifically says no one can sleep in the unfinished basement I see renters using it for whatever purpose they deem fit, and sleeping area would be my best guess, so I'd put in a shower.
You tub with a shower would work with a window. A farmer needs a downstairs bath because of how dirty they get working on the farm and upstairs bath for the family.
I love love, love your videos and look forward to them every week. You are a real workhorse. I don’t know how you do it all. But then, so is Dawn, a workhorse. What a pair, you are so lucky to have each other. I love you both.
No shower in basement for now. I agree that 2 toilets are a must. I am so enjoying watching this renovation 🙂. Keep up the good work.
Ultimately on a farm a nice basement shower is a good idea
When did you get solar panels? That's exciting. Sunrise looked beautiful. You guys are doing a great job with the farm house.
I was wondering the same...maybe I missed that video?
I like the idea of a second shower stall, simply from the standpoint of coming in dirty from the barn and not tracking mud etc through the house. (Definitely nice to have a second toilet though!)
However, considering that you are trying to meet a deadline, and planning further, future renovation to the basement, I personally would not spend the time, money, and aggravation putting in the shower now. Save that money and time and put in a nice full bath when you lift the house.
Yes, second shower is a plus. Beautiful sunrise. I watch it rise most mornings. :)
The basement shower would be nice for muddy gross farm and animal chores. Not getting the mess upstairs. The basement doesn't have to be prefect now, it can be the house mud room.
Tom a basement shower is an asset, if the renters have hired help with the animals. And in the long run the bed room makes sense....for live in help.
Looks waaay better without the deck! ☀️😃☀️
Tom, Great video. I'm sure it's nice to get a few things wrapped up. Gorgeous sunrise. I didn't realize y'all had solar panels. My Hubby has wanted to look into that. Can you do a video on that sometime? Y'all have a great wkend. 😊
We had a window in our farmhouse bathroom. Mom put shutters and it provided privacy. Other options were opaque glass and or clear vinyl waterproof plastic that attached to glass. Even a bathtub without a shower is better than no shower at all. We had a small hobby farm that had 2 pigs, a horse, a hen house, ducks, and sheep, and a couple of steers. Pepper, Winky, and Wyoming were our dogs. Happiest time in my life. Don't forget smoke alarms. The farm had none. We had an electrical fire in the dead of night. The neighbor spotted the smoke and saved our life and all of our animals.
I'm with Dawn on this one. We're a family of 6 and 1.5 baths is perfect. There are two toilets. 2 vanities and one shower tub combo. Onkly one shower to clean - perfect. No matter what the two of you decide please keep the window, otherwise it will be a very dark dungeon bathroom.
PS I see a lot of solar behind you at the end of your video by the office building - would love to see more on that!
A second shower in the basement would be a plus. After working the farm, they could shower in the basement and not drag all the dirt through the main house.
As a farm property, it would be nice to have a basement shower so people can come right in the walkout door, leave horsey or other kinds of dirty clothes in the laundry room and go straight into that downstairs shower. Then go upstairs all clean. Speaking from experience as a horse person and a mom.
3rd bedroom second shower. 2 bedroom one is good. You are amazing. I love the ballet with ‘heavy’ equipment. In another life….
Second shower vote from us!!! If the drain works, puleeze take advantage of it right now! If it means waiting an extra month for renting it out, so be it. This is the ideal time and i promise you wont regret it! The renters will love it!
I’m in the two shower club for a different reason. As a landlord if something goes wrong with your primary bath the renters have a second bath which makes repairs urgent but not an emergency. If you guys are out of town when that first shower goes out you will be able to repair when you return vs hiring a professional on a weekend. 💸💸💸💸
Yes for a 2nd shower ☺️
I’m in for at least a shower!! You are getting closer to the finish line.
We have a window in our Shower and use it daily. You can also put sticky window films if needed. A 2nd shower would be great especially for a farm
Can you put a frost on the glass? A second shower is a great idea!
Your time management skills are great! You get so much done! It may not seem it to you, but if you time lapsed everything you do, it would be dizzying! Love following along with your journey. Hey to Dawn...hope she is getting use out of her ALDI coin holder!!
I agree with alot of the comments that a second shower would definitely be handy especially if it is going to be a working farm. Having the door to the basement so assessable is awesome! and why exactly did they have a deck where there is no door, or did I miss something! a mudroom is one of things that everyone wants out in the country especially with kids and having a place that isn't in the main living space so you can clean up and not mess up the entire house doing it! thanks so much for sharing! xoxo
Yes! Do the second shower. As a stop off from the barn
Tom, you are awesome! You get so much done and know how to do so much. You and Dawn make such a great team. Now, was that a bunch of solar panels behind you at the end of the video? Can we get the story on that?
Excellent progress. The sunrise is phenomenal!
The second shower area will be part of a mud room situation. Working a farm with horses is a messy job. They will want to come in downstairs, get cleaned up and not drag it through the house.👍 0:02
When you finally lift the basement, the second shower will be nice to have. Allows for guests down in the basement. Keep the window; add privacy film but allow the light in. I liked the deck in front of the garage better the way Tom first plopped it (aligned with building edge to the left of the door). That way, you dont accidentally fall off the edge as you walk out.
No shower. One is enough. I really respect your desire to streamline things! Keep that going. Minimalism also applies to getting rid of mental clutter, and finishing this house will help your mental minimalism. 😉👍
I’ve never heard the phrase “mental minimalism” before. Did you coin that?😄 I like it! Sounds like a whole new UA-cam channel I would subscribe to.
@@lisaa3978 ha! I'm certain Dawn has talked about the general principle of mental clutter before on her channel, The Minimal Mom. I've learned so much from her!! Mental minimalism probably isn't coined because it sounds insulting even though I didn't mean it that way.
@@jeffkliewer537 😂 I can see how that might be interpreted as insulting. “Yes, I strive to be a mental minimalist.”
People today look for rentals with 2 full bathrooms especially with the rental prices. Move the drain if possible. ❤the house!
Also vote for shower with window in it. You could even take that window out and put in glass block. Had a glassblock window in our shower growing up and the light was nice. Have since had many dungeon showers and light is much better. But just doing a half bath for now and putting in a shower when you have to re-do the basement might be the best plan for your timeline and wallet.
The window stays and the second shower is a must regardless of how many bedrooms the house has. Imagine two adults getting ready for work at the same time.
Tom...you and your talents remind me of my brother...super smart and handy...the world needs more of you guys!
I have to say respect to the person who owned the house before who put that border all around the kitchen, and the stairway. Could you imagine doing that border in the stairway. That would have been hell to put up! Now it will be hell to get it taken down as well LOL.
💥 TOM, My husband and I enjoy watching ALL the Ups & Downs. Learning is patiently progressing. We all have the Privilege of learning right along with you. The decision with the bathroom and the downstairs shown each of us that there is wanting, financially, ability and many ways of problem solving. I try to keep in my mind that " It take many Strings to weave one basket. The beauty when work hard and pull it together is worth it " ❤ Keep up the GREAT WORK !!! We are putting our 2 bits in about the deck on the White Building. We think the Deck should be moved back more to the left side of the door frame. Deck or Porch need to have atleast 1 to 2 feet on each side of frame to help with not coming out and a sudden drop of step down. Just a thought. 😉
🙏🙏 We keep you Tom, Dawn & Family in our prayers of Safty, Learning and Fun with all the adventures you are blessed to be doing . 🙌 We are thankful we get to have you come into our lives each week. 😊
If you think you'll be constructing a third bedroom, then at least a shower would be great for the person who sleeps there. I had a basement bedroom for years and the bath was upstairs. I hated hauling my stuff up and down the stairs. Of course, it depends on how long it will be before you add the bedroom. Will it be harder to add the shower in the future? If you raise the house you will have another opportunity. So many choices! Thanks for taking us along on the ride!
You’re getting so much done and it’s so satisfying to see it all coming together. Another great video! Also, would love to hear about your solar energy install.👍🏼
Yes! More on the solar energy install please. I am considering it, as I write, on farm land I have in the west of MN. Thank you!
P.S. I’m all for the window, shower, third bedroom and pocket door, Lol ❤
