    I own a septic system and the soil is clay and shale. Where I live, the underground springs would likely fill up the drain field. The ground does not perk well, so the sand mounds are tall here. In my opinion. On the plus side, they are Great for sledding!

  • @rachellelarge3410

    Mound systems: rural lake properties use them around here. My crude understanding from hearing people talk about them, is that the mound is designed so that the liquid is up near the surface allowing the water to evaporate up through the soil rather than drain down into the ground. There's usually a barrier under the pipes to keep the liquid from draining down. For places with clay soil or high water tables they need the water to evaporate up otherwise it may pool somewhere on the surface which isn't sanitary. Solids stay trapped in the tanks so it's just liquid in the mound leach field.

      Both country homes I've lived in had septic fields that failed. I swore I'd never live in the country again. .But now I'm thinking they were never installed properly. We had only one septic tank with 5 or 6 lines. My entire backyard was a septic field. I sincerely think you will be good for a very long time. It was around 10 thousand dollars. I can't even begin to think how much it is today.

    Tom what you described and asked why you can't----- that is exactly how our system works. We have had the system for 60+ years with one failure of the drain field which was blown out and a second drain field placed right next to the original. Now both drain fields are fully functional. We switch between the 2 "just because". Our soil is sandy with the lake ground water at 4 feet.

  • @lizs7012
    @lizs7012 9 місяців тому +1

    From my experience with septic systems, if you have clay soil that does not pass a perc test, and you put a drain field below ground, the system will fail and flood the ground around the tanks with sewer water which will not drain off. With the mound, the fluid goes into sand, gravel, etc., that will contain it. We had to have a mound system for that reason.

    I don't know, Tom, but here in FL my whole septic system is above the level of the yard and mounded. We also have a lift station, which the pump when out about 1.5 yrs after it was finished. However, we have also issues with power outages and surges.

  • @CherylAnderson0
    @CherylAnderson0 9 місяців тому +13

    I hope someone answers your question about the mounds because I’ve always wondered the same thing and don’t understand it at all. Plus does that mean the system don’t work when the power is off?

    • @ellen8996
      @ellen8996 9 місяців тому

      I'm hoping someone with more knowledge answers these questions, but this is what I think I remember from 30 years ago. No power will mean waste water will not go out to the septic tank, but the reason for the 3 tanks is partly that they can hold a lot when needed. When our lift pump got hit by lightning, suddenly our drains didn't work until it was figured out and fixed. I'm not sure, but I think the mounds vs. underground is determined by the ground permeability in the area and the depth of the water table. If the water table is 200 feet down with lots of sand and gravel in the dirt layers, it acts as a natural filter.When we had a new well dug, they first hit water at 11 feet, but rules say the well has to be at least 33 feet deep to limit ground water contamination. At 33 feet we hit a vein of clay. Our well ended up at 39 feet. Our septic tank pumped up hill on the other side of the property to a drain field (so maybe 200 or so feet apart?).

    A Wisconsin Mound system is used when you have high groundwater. There is a minimum vertical separation to the groundwater that is involved. Also you have better evaporation to the surface having a mound. There is a minimum vertical separation to a limiting layer such as shrink swell clay or a rock ledge.

    We live in the eastern middle part of AL where all we have is clay too. Not soil, so we also have to have mounds. Which they didn't use to have. The mound on the property we improved next to us had to have a mound like 3 ft high. Not useful for anything. You have to drive around it. We also had to have an extra drain field put in on the property to be able to drain excess rain water. So if you ever get an answer Tom, let us know. Glad all is coming together for y'all before winter sets in. ... Glenda
