I love that JJ just straight out admits "I am conservative because I like things"
Cute, childlike. Probably shouldn't be in charge of anything.
He's mildly conservative coming from the middle class in Canada. It's a big difference from American conservatism in the present.

I love JREG but aren't his videos super edited where one sentance begins right as the previous one ended via edits? I wonder how much of his humor translates to irl

You're not out of the loop this time. I don't recall the two ever interacting. JJ McCullough is a pretty sharp guy, columnist for Washington Post and has a youtube channel where he discusses cultural trends and observations.

I’m only 20 minutes in but JJ just said he appreciates consumerism more and has a better respect for America , why does he come off like a trust fund kid trying to elaborate to his average friends that he’s more “traveled”
If "Aboot" was a bit, he was extremely dedicated to it 😂
Canadian
Canadian here, and this is legitimately the first time I'd ever heard anyone actually say "aboot". Jaw dropped.
This has to be a bit, if he was born in Vancouver or lived there for a while, he would not have that much of an stereotypical accent. It must be from his parents or something.
@@kevinz8619 We all sort of do it but it for most people what they're actually saying phonetically is "abouwt" because we tent to pucker our lips more when we're transitioning from the U to the T. If you hold your mouth in that position instead of completing that transition, that ends up sounding like "ooo". It's the same with house, around, etc. The longer you take to make that transition, the more "Canadian" it sounds.
@@SokomPwnage I used to watch him a lot, he always does it so I suspect it’s either a real accent or a bit that has become ingrained in him.
I've changed my mind due to watching some debates, so I don't think they are pointless.
Sorry buddy, you're going to have to change your mind again. Most people don't have the mental cognition to change their mind after watching a debate.
@@How_to_PronounceI disagree. Debates may not initially change someone's mind, but they can help shift perception of the issue at hand over time.
@@How_to_Pronounceit’s a slow process of watching similar, good faith debates over and over again. Rare to change minds but it is possible. I see your point though.
The problem is, did u change ur mind cuz u heard a convincing ARGUMENT , or did u change ur mind cuz u heard a convincing PERSON? Hard to separate the two
@How_to_Pronounce I don't necessarily disagree, but the keyword you used is "most". I'd argue if a small number of people change their mind, debate can be worth it. Anecdotally Jon Stuart's debates with Bill O'Reilly had an impact on how I think of certain things. I think the quality of the debate obviously has a large effect as well.
Bro I just wanna see the JJ and Destint retirement relationship arc now.
I'm a republican that almost exclusively watches destiny now for a left leaning point of view on things for 4 years now. I disagree on a lot of things, but also have had my mind changed on quite a few as well. As trashy i think the left is. He's one of the best they got. For what it's worth, i've been pulled back to the center on a lot of things because I can see the bullsh*t on both sides. Something i can at least say thank you for
Can you see Trump’s bullshit?
Same! For me I was liberal but I'm recent years I've moved more centered left, which is a huge no no in my "community". So I started to watch more conservative/Republic point of view to find the bs on both sides but also more to think on a topic that I already had opinions on. You can't say you're open minded if you're not willing to hear things from all ends.
@@JJMcCulloughI'm a bit late and I can't speak for this fella, but I went down a similar path as him. I grew up in the northern section of the Bible Belt. Short answer to your question: Yes, I see Trump's bullshit.
Long answer: I saw his bullshit even before he became a meme among the dozen other candidates running in 2015. To be fair I've never voted for him (never voted for the winning presidential candidate in my life 😭). In the 2020 election there were less than 100 people in my small town that voted not-Trump. Whole town's FULL of his flags and hats. Other than the president, I overwhelmingly vote more "Republican" than anything else.
JJ has taught me so much about Canadian conservatives and how they differ from Americans, definitely would recommend his channel

@@devonwilliams2423not really he sort of did the opposite. The point of talking about that was to say America has a lot of cool stuff to explore.

Great that destiny is finally being honest about his lack of knowledge on history and also the way that he would just read one paragraph on something and then argue it like he’s an expert. I don’t think he realizes that he revealed that much, but honestly good for him for being upfront about it.

Wow, what a discussion! JJ brought depth and insight into politics and culture that kept me engaged from start to finish. His perspectives were thought-provoking, nuanced, and refreshingly honest. What I loved most was how the conversation flowed seamlessly, never once becoming dull or predictable. Kudos to the Destiny for steering the dialogue in such an engaging direction. Can't wait for the next episode!
I've been a JJ fan for two decades. He's consistently thoughtful and engaging. It's not a put-on or a character. It's just him being himself.
Just recently thought a convo with JJ would be really cool! Very unique and thoughtful guy. Great convo.
It feels like he's saying
"When kids these days watch Gundam, they are so focused on the idea that 'war is bad' that they forget to think 'wow cool robot. I appreciate that i get to see a cool robot."
More like 'wow it's amazing that I'm privileged enough to be able to access any show at any time with the innovation of western technologies like smart phones and the internet.
Have you seen his channel? He is just a curious and inquisitive person uncovering the cool history of the world. It’s not why take away the point of things.
@@DOFT.mp4 lol cry more??
@@DOFT.mp4 Not really. He was directly advocating for a more basic consumerist appreciation of things. He specifically said that Destiny's example of studying music was too "cerebral" an approach to art and that it's good to collect some knicknacks, that the podcast studio being minimalist was a reflection of this. He was basically just saying to buy more funko pops because isn't it amazing that we can buy so many funko pops. Pretty dumb.

This was such a good episode. Would love to see more of these types of conversations!
JJ "as I suffer from twink death"...
Destiny: "as I hit menopause..."
I think you’re really true about the “history teachers have to relate it to present and be passionate to get engaged”. All my history teachers in high school were quite good and loved the subject, arguably my sophomore teacher was the most passionate about history, but my junior teacher was the one I felt got me most interested in understanding government and made me have a significant interest, because he was both interested but also connected it well to present stuff and was interested in connecting it. It was a gov class so that helped, but he was also just very interested in it but in a way that most people can connect to (where as some of my other teachers while interested were interested in sort of a “this is the thing I’m passionate about” which, while great and definitely better than not caring, doesn’t really relate that strongly to students who don’t naturally have a passion for it too).
None of the history classes offered in high school covered interesting subjects; it’s all US history or Civil War history, which is ok, but for me things like History of religions, history of religious persecution in western society, or sociological approaches to heresy and heretical doctrines in medieval Christendom, for example, would’ve grabbed my attention, thus I didn’t recognize my passion for history until adulthood.

MY TWO GOATS ❤❤❤❤❤
People's views are often formed through social osmosis and reinforced from lived experience. As an example, no one is born racist. They become racist through culture, social relationships such as family and community, and laws. Then is reinforced through negative experiences with said racial group or through others experiences they may hear about. These deeply rooted views are almost never going to change because they listened to a single debate or had a conversation with someone with an opposing view. The best you can hope for is to plant a seed of doubt. To get them to question themselves. If you can get them to start viewing things from a different perspective you can start meaningful change. However, there's not really any way to know when you've succeeded in doing this so it can feel like you're not doing anything meaningful. Ultimately these debates are just going to be a single point in a series of points that is going to get someone to broaden their perspectives. All of this though completely ignores other factors like mental illness, a lack of education, poor social groups, etc. I hope people like Steven don't quit what they do because they feel like they're being ineffectual. It's definitely good to have people who can challenge others views like he does.

I fundamentally disagree on the "just teach the names and figures rather than more high concept stuff."
I had years of my education wasted by going over names, techologies and battles of the civil war. I would be MUCH better off if we took a higher concept class about the policies and cultural impacts of the civil war.
I don't gain value from knowing the names of generals for WWII. I gain value from knowing how my state's infrastructute policy changed during that time.
He’s wrong. Debates are important but more important than the debate is doing research and educating yourself about the topic you’re debating.
Evidence? He's wrong. Gigachad.

The real technological advancement of the Trump era was the discovery that the structure of the American government really had no defense for someone who would simply lie, keep lying, and never acknowledge or take responsibility for anything, and leveraging the internet and misinformation (and the help of autocrats who have been developing their general techniques for decades and supplied massive infrastructure for applying them) was an incredibly effective way to bring this technique down to a personal level with Americans.
