Hi Alex, I just had my last sparring practice before my sparring tournament for tomorrow. For some reson I got really nervous when I was sparring and I lost the fight. I always do good in class and usally win but todsy I got over nervous about the tournament. Now I'm nervous for tomorrow's tournament because I hope the same thing doesn't happen during the tournament. What should I do? I hope you role before 2:00 tomorrow. btw I love your videos
Hope it went well! For future tournaments here is a video I made talking about the mental game that could be useful to you :) ua-cam.com/video/N5XUTvJG7So/v-deo.html
Your trainer is doing a really bad job before the tournament he should be doing practice tourmanet in training. Focusing on every possible outcome and pressure
I will try some of this Friday when we have sparring. Wish I could kick high enough for head shots. The sparring is by far the most fun in tae kwon do imo.As always your videos are most helpful Alex!!
We always watching your videos and tips in sparring and it really help us and i have tournament this august 6 and i will watch your speed and hard kick tutorial
Aw thank you! I say try out a class of both and see what you enjoy most. Because whatever you choose it needs to be what you really just enjoy doing :)
i dont know wht but whenever we spar in my class , my instincts kick in and defend and attack by themselves without me thinking or being aware of it. most of the time i am able to land many more kicks than my oponent but still i would love some tips to help with this situation.
tips for people coming back to tkd plss... i was a nine year old brown belter back then... but i stopped due to a severe injury from a spinning hook kick... now im turning 17 and trying to get back in action.... but im stiff, easily tired and my style's outdated, i guess...back then we prioritize power and speed, nowadays, i feel that the kicks got faster but weaker... thanks lots of love!!!
I know what you mean because I came back to training after a few years. It just takes a lot of consistent training to get your skill back, and be patient with yourself. I do suggest training cardio to get your endurance back and stretching several times a week to help loosen your body back up. And of course, train your kicks! Good luck with your training :)
^_^ Nice video. I'm also a 1st Dan too! I also looked at your "Sparring a Front leg opponent" and I was thinking how similar my friend and I have the same techniques while we spar haha(we're both counter-attackers).
By check motions I mean using your body motions, movement, and/or fakes to try and get a reaction out of your opponent. Faking a kick, stop your front foot down, etc. Basically just to change up the rhythm of the match and see what your opponent does. I will be posting a video on check motions and movement soon :)
you forgot about the "honey dick" .... that's like when you look at the chest pad and sell your intention like your going to round kick it but you go to the head instead ... only tried it twice in competition but I got a 2 standing 8 counts that resulted in fight ending TKO both times...
in my opinion the only ways to land a head kick are if 1) they think its to the body or 2) they don't see it coming at all... That's probably why you land so many crescent kicks ..because your in close and they can't see your foot coming up off the ground as its barely in they're peripheral vision on the flank side .. for instance if you were in a street fight and you tried to head kick someone outright with no fake, redirect of intention or in combination and failed you probably have zero chance your going to land a head kick after that for the rest of the fight, its just too easy to block or evade a head kick if you know someone can and wants to do it.
When people try to use lots of movement to distract me I just stand still let them dance and preserve my energy
Thankyou for the tips, Ms. Alex. It helps me a lot. Tommorow morning is my tournament.
How did you do?

You can do strong kicks as well, but don't expect to hit that easily.

I have not. When I was doing MMA training more often I would just kick on the heavy bag but that is it.
Thanks Alex
Thank you for watching! :)
Nice shirt
I know this was a while back, but what do you mean when you use check motions? Is it to check if you can hit that spot or it is something else?
By check motions I mean using your body motions, movement, and/or fakes to try and get a reaction out of your opponent. Faking a kick, stop your front foot down, etc. Basically just to change up the rhythm of the match and see what your opponent does. I will be posting a video on check motions and movement soon :)

I know what you're talking about! I have been starting to train that more during my sessions, I just need to make it cleaner.
