  • When Tim Alberta, son of a born-again Christian pastor, was growing up, the church was a sanctuary from the world of politics. Today, as a journalist, he reports on how in recent decades political ideologies have divided the church, with white evangelicals becoming embroiled by politics and their support of Donald Trump. CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa talks with Alberta, author of the new book, "The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism," who says the white evangelical church is in crisis, which coincided with the election of Donald Trump.

Tax the church if they want to preach politics

I graduated high school in 03. Whenever we played football against the Evangelical Christian schools, our coaches warned us about racial slurs and not letting it get to us on the field. They didn't change in 2016. They just got a louder microphone.

I noticed how Tim Alberta and the reporter, had refrained from referencing the racist temperament that is prevalent in the so-called Conservative White American Christian sector.

Church attendance has been declining for decades, and Trump and maga haven't helped the perception of the church.

I so empathize with this man! I have heard absolutely awful things in church since Trump. Its unbelievable to me and very painful.

Pretending to praise God for political gain is truly disgusting.

  • @babywatt1964

If the church wants to get into politics then they should have their tax exemptions taken away which I don't know why they have it in the first place.

As an atheist that’s lived in the Bible Belt my entire life, surrounded by delusional, judgmental conservatives seeing this man and others like him gives me a bit of hope. I tend to generalize all evangelicals as zealots, especially post Trump presidency, it’s good to see they’re not all extremist sheeple.

  • @dominictemple

It’s almost as if Trump brought the evangelicals to a high mountain and showed them the world and said, “all this I will give you if you bow down and worship me.” If only there was a biblical comparison.

My dad is a Baptist preacher, and as a kid he always said that he would never discus's politics at church, and I visited this past year, during the closing prayer, it became a diatribe about Biden/ Trump, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. They have completely abandoned their faith to follow Trump, They are brainwashed.

  • @monicamacauley3750

I left my church home of 19 years because I got tired of hearing how Trump was ordained by God to be our Pres.

Maybe some have lost their way but not all.

How sad that our country has been reduced to this. Political division will be our downfall. We're all Americans but all we see is how different we are than "those people". I believe Patrick Henry said, "United we stand, divided we fall" in his last public speech in March 1799. We would all do well to remember that phrase or we may eventually regret it.

  • @Sarappreciates

My parents' megachurch has become a MAGAchurch. It's just politics now, and it's got nothing to do with kindness or compassion.

Love to hear him speak truth, not politics or extreme religion.
