JOAN LONDON and an ANNA WINTOUR interview from 1989

- A video I taped of an interview by JOAN LONDON with ANNA WINTOUR in 1989
What I find most interesting in this clip and in what Anna is saying is how what is described can be true today, even if a person is working from home, as many are now. Color, variety, intent in the choosing of what you wear during the day can have an impact on your mood, productivity and, I would think, state of happiness. Taking time to put together a creative combination of clothes is part of living artfully, the results are reflected in the things you do and there is were art is made and pleasure gleaned.
Anyone can be an artist, not to make art but in being an artist, it's a skill we can develope. - Фільми й анімація
You can clearly see shes not fake with her behaviour, shes beeing natural all the time. The manner with what she speaks now is the same she spoke back in the day. Iconic
Her serious manner makes me laugh. So ruthless and “masculine”. It’s no wonder that her dad “Chilly Charlie” was her inspiration. She could have chosen a PR friendly spokesperson but the boss wanted to appear herself. She’s an amazing role model for those who want to be taken seriously at work
@@jjl6438 So many talk about her being so authentic. There's a difference between being authentic and unpleasant. And I'm not going to go into the maybe she's just being this way ... or maybe it was that ... please. I am done making excuses for rich and privileged people. Because trust me, if I were to behave the way Anna behaves she would accuse me of being disrespectful. I have never purchased Vogue magazine, and as long as she's the editor in chief, I will make every effort never to purchase it. It is absolutely irrelevant to me. And the shade is, she gets the ideas from life. WE are that LIFE that she takes from, exploits, and makes money off of, and then tries to tell us we're not fashionable. Ahh, think again.
Anything is iconic these days
omfg now Edna from the Incredibles makes more sense
ik this comment is a year old, but I always believed enda was based off Rei Kawakubo who is worth a google.
@@aidanconcannon5710 she was, thank u for being educated. I love rei
@@aidanconcannon5710 no sorry but Edna was actually based off Edith Head
@@realityqueen3173 lol looking at pictures they actually look identical. you are totally right
Anna was already in the 90's in terms of style. It's fun to see how different she looks from the puffy 80's style of the interviewer.
I think she has really lightened up and learned to embrace the media spotlight more over the years. Here, she seems impersonal and like she's just spitting out facts. In more recent interviews, she is more conversational and has more of a sense of humor.
She is British!!! This is how they are! Nothing can be done about it!
@@alina3254 British people are actually known for having a good sense of humor, Anna even said so herself in her 73 questions.
They made such a parody of her with that Devil wears Prada movie I think she just plays along sometimes.
I think she just hates small talk. She’s a very serious and passionate person so doing these interview probably frustrates her
Do you think its small talk?? It's not like they were gossiping about celebs or other superficial stuff...she was giving her opinion on things related to her field and her expertise....I lover her and her accent!
the power of white privilege...
darling, fashion is nothing but 'small' talk.
@@props1028 Facts

I understand why Anna seems cold. She looks cold for the American crowd. You go to Europe (say France or Germany), everyone on TV have similar manners like Anna.
That's absolutely right. Americans love smiling. In Europe, especially Eastern Europe, people think only insane people grin all the time.
They need to loosen up and have more fun.
@@yvonneboaten8289 shut up, wonder how u would behave if your family was killed in holocaust great famine or second world war. years of totalitarian regimes don't make you too smiley either, but what you stupid yankees know about that
Ah, wrong. I just came back from France, notorious for its reputation of being rude. Fortunately, I speak French so I was able to break a lot of barriers, and people were warm and inviting. Here, Anna is just downright unpleasant and doesn't even hide the fact that she wants the interview to be over. If you don't want to do the interview Ms. Wintour, there's the door Ms. Thang. How's that for being authentic? I'm done making excuses for rich and privileged people.
@@mateuszmazurek7991 Try making your point without being rude -- and without stereotyping all Americans. "Yankees." Please. Ironically, it's those who are usually called Yankees in the U.S. -- in the northeast -- who tend to be more like Europeans in how we dress and behave. And I'm sure that all Europeans aren't as bitter and nasty as you are.
A major influencer, and a fashion icon. Decisive, forward thinking. Fascinating.
I wished i could defend my thesis as she did her job!
What Anna says here still holds true.
I reminder when I was in high school a while ago and walking into class wearing a sweatshirt that was sky blue. And everyone else was wearing dark or very bland colors. So I easily stuck out.
Instead of feeling embarrassed, I look back at that and think: Wow. ever heard of color?
🤪
Love her or not -- She has held her reign of power for decades.
Anna Wintour looks like she went back to the 80s just to meet this interviewer (whose style definitely belongs in the 80s) and then hopped right back into the future after the interview ended.
thank you for sharing this video
Never thought I’d see Anna Wintour in a Lilly-Pulitzer type dress.
This is from 1990. The issue on the desk is September 1990 (Tatjana Patitz by Patrick Demarchelier and Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele)
She looks better now than 30 years ago
@Diogo, I agree. A lot more chic and polished
It’s called surgery.
We all would if we could afford plastic surgery
@@isla1668 it’s more than that
not really, now she's old
Sis didn’t crack one bit of a smile. She’s got Ice water running those veins 😂 sheesh!
The interviewer was adamant about black. She kept bringing it up and Anna was like, WEAR COLOR!!! JUST WEAR COLOR!!!!!
I can see her eyes
Right!😂
Joan London and Anna Wintour. Love. This.
Good Lord, that women barely let Anna talk...😂
"...Whatever..." - Anna Wintour
Very elegant.
Queen.
She was very ahead of her time ! I remember those mid 80s late 80s color block
The CCD era of layering bold accessories is quite evident in the screen shots. My goodness, how far we’ve come. So...what’s next?
Wait ... wait .. there was a time when Anna didn't rock sunglasses ?!
🤣😂😎🤣
she seem amazingly more relaxed then she is now
Why do I love her?
Cause there is no relevant things in your mind to do or think about?
Wow back when wearing a colourful suit was a new fashion statement lol
Wintour, when she was a little more humble, and had something valid to say.
Actually, this is not from 1989, this is from 1990. Anyway, I never understood the origin of Anna's accent. It's a strange accent. I know she's English, but her accent sounds unlike anything you hear in England. It's almost like an American-esque type of British accent. Received Pronunciation does not sound like this.
Her mother was American. And she moved to NYC in the mid-1970s, when she was still young -- she was about 25 y.o. -- so she's been here a very long time. Accents change. And she probably adopted some pronunciations deliberately, perhaps trying to hang on to her British accent but not quite succeeding.
@@Historian212 Thanks. I never knew her mother was American.
Smart lady. Business and brass tacks.
Damn....Anna looked really harsh back in the day. She definitely improved with age.....changed her hair color, lower lid surgery, tinted eye contacts, etc.
She saw exhausted
It is true
Her face changed sincè 2001
You'd think choosing an outfit was akin to performing brain surgery. Wear what you like and be done with it.
we were all born naked and the rest is drag. so it is important
❤
Nothing is new under the sun.
if stares could kill 😂. I love her tho. You can see her visibly uncomfortable when she needs to be less decisive and more emotive.
Imagine playing poker with her, you can't read her face, even without glasses on. I can't read her eyes or mouth. I can't even determine her mood in this video. She is scarier than I thought. However, I would be glad if she is my boss.
She’s being serious and professional, nothing to be scared about in my opinion. She’s not a comedian or a performer…
it is hilarious that she is so deathly serious about these things like it matters....anna lighten up! it's just fashion!
Ugh shut up that’s like someone telling you to take your career (something you should be *passionate* about) and not take it so seriously.
The concept of fashion is the concept of curating your life with intent towards beauty and harmony and possibly, at times, controversy so as to add spice to living. The striving to be in fashion has direct implications to what a "fashionable" person puts out into the world and, more importantly, how they feel about themselves. But I agree, living is better when infused with humour, Anna could lighten up a bit.
@@louis2172 i actually had a good handle on my self, my identity and my career. of course, i wanted to do well as a matter of personal standards. but my work is just work. i could take it or leave it. but i am not offended if people think it is silly or too serious because it does not define me and i am more than my vocation. i am also 37, and financially independent. retired myself in 2019. and i am able to do it simply because i am not overly identified or preoccupied with how others perceive my professional self. unless you are curing cancer, or covid, or the leader of a country, you dont have to be that neurotic about your vocation. really. 😊
@@shoelabnyc6264 maybe i am from the other end of the spectrum. the ones that believe trends are for the anxious, and it is more honest to want something out of the garment, how it can serve you, rather than a matter of ornamentation or sartorial discourse. i think it separates the real users of "fashion" from the "fashion victims" who dresses a certain way head-to-toe just because a self-important person declares it so. it is just clothes. really. 😊
Oh please spare me with this ' it's just clothes and lighten up' nonsense. This is a person who takes the artistry of dressing seriously. For godsake she is an editor for a very long time. Saying its just clothes as if you are underestimating the power the clothes hold to the society. This is a craft that you will never understand. Stop dismissing creative people just because you don't get why are we being so serious about our work. This is our life, job, passion and dream. You have no right to tell us how to act and behave regarding our job. Without this people, you would still be wearing some pre historic stuff or worst, naked. Stop judging us, and undermining our work. You can make fun of us or berating all you want but at least we poured our heart and soul to this craft. There is nothing as pathetic as an aging ignorant. Learn some decorum please.
I saw this because of the Kim k supposed snub. Go Anna.
She seemed more humble back then
Sharp Lady
Is she 40 here? Interesting...
good lord what is she wearing, it looks like a paper cutout of a christmas tree
D. Selfridge duh, it’s 1989
thank you.
Paper Doll outfit
We get it, you’d never understand fashion
So basically you came to a fashion video to tell us you don't understand fashion. Thats what I do in my free time. Find medical videos to tell the world "I dont get it" 🙄
As if shes always had that one hairstyle lol
Now I see why she wears those stylish black lacquer sunglasses. Yikes
Now I know why she wears sunglasses! So googly looking!
how mean
@@imcomingmrfrodo she's ugly...
A fashion icon and still has that bowl haircut 😂 Her arrogant behavior is nothing but obnoxious. She needs to humble herself. It doesn’t hurt to be warm to others.
No one ever talks about how beautiful and elegant Anna really is, they should though
Lol no
😅👏🎈💞
She's had work, clearly.
Someone with this tragedy of a haircut should be barred from any sort of fashion or style related professions.
Her accent sounds like a Kiwi (New Zealander) in this interview.
Time for a new hairstyle
Anna Wintour has always hated black. Always trying to add colors.
it is 2021, and she still has the same unflattering hair style
At 02:00
She looks like she does now
What's the name of the Interviewer?
Joan Lunden
Tilda Swinton?
This interviewer is the annoying American stereotype and Anna is not liking it 😂
If a giraffe had a bob
That's what I look like with bobbed hair.😂
Dylan Vibes.
I always thought Anna should hide her bags under her eyes.
Her eyes look like she hasn't slept fr several days..😆
Yeah, that bright-colored suit idea really worked. Not. In the real world, anyway.
Looks like Kermit the Frog took inspiration from Anna. :)
I know it was 1989 but what on EARTH is that woman wearing?!
that hideous outfit tt anna has on makes me wonder how in the world she got to curate Vogue...
she is literally the same except that she has aged which obv people do lol.
Congratulations, ANNA, PLEASE, CHANGE YOUR HAIR, BECAUSE, IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU, CHANGE, IS YOUR TIME!!! ⌚
She looks insecure
OR pissed off lol!
I think she just hates small talk
... this is was the time before she sold her eyes to the devil....
Think she’s due for a new hair style?
But ffdw to 2022 .& anna had become arrogant, obnoxious and had been called out!
She still has bad hair to this day. Some "fashion icon".
My cousin told me she and her husband were in DC (in 2018) and all the women were wearing black suits or dresses w/jackets. Stupid.
I don't like her fashions at all or her beauty chips she and I we're not on the same page at all because I could care less about the models and all the clothes that they wear I mean let's get real only the filthy rich people can afford to address that way and jealous and I'm not I'm just a very simple woman I lived a very simple life and and a fantastic mansion I figure that one out.
Gosh, this woman does look aweful.. and people call this a fashion expert or even fashion dictator.... I konw plenty of granmas who are a lot classier than her... not to mention Dame Helen Mirren..
She has had major plastic surgery since then.lol
Perhaps it's the 32+ year gap
This horrible ostrich.
Interviewer is terrible!!
ewww
Over-rated HACK.
Shes far to political these days for me I liked her better back then stuck to fashion since when does politics mix with fashion girl bye bye
She's pretentious.
