  • WOW!!! Norm just bought a super cool 1959 Hammond B3 Organ with a Leslie Model 122 Speaker from his friend John in Austin Texas. This is the same year as Norm's original B3 when he used to play, but Norm took a little a vacation from playing for about 40 years. Norm says he sounds like he's playing with baseball gloves on, but we think he sounds great!!! Stay tuned, Norm also got a whole bunch of guitars which we will show you guys on the next video!!! What do you think of his playing?

Pretty cool. Beautiful organ. Nice to hear Norm play. We were just reminiscing... when I was about 16, my first job in San Jose was at this pizza place called Cap'ns Galley. The owner had found a theater organ, one of those ginormous ones with all the pipes. The pipes covered almost a whole wall. He hired someone to come in and play it to draw a crowd. The place would rock on a weekend! I think he had 3 restaurants, all with an organ. They're long gone now. No idea whatever happened to the organs, but they were cool.

When I was in high school in the late 60s the keyboard player in one of my bands had a C3, which is the console version of the B3. We used to get it to gigs balanced on the back seat of a top down convertible with someone sitting on the back of the back seat to steady it.

@@jeffholliday8304 Ok, for lay persons I can go with that. It is just us organists understand them as manuals. Keyboards being mostly digital / electronic and usually a single slab device on a stand. (Yes I play those also). However, I still call my Hammond SK2 a two manual organ lol, a 35lb. B3 if you will (O: And man, with the adjustable key click, leakage/cross talk and generator noise with the Studio 12 Leslie, it was a perfect, portable solution for my blues band. wow - what a beautiful organ! i just love the very old versions with their wooden end blocks left and right to the keyboards.
btw - the leslie seems to be a 122RV, which has an additional spring reverb system installed. there should be a dedicated tube amp in the top compartment just next to the rotating horn, with a knob to adjust the amount of reverb. the reverb is fed to a separate speaker which is located behind the extra, smaller louvres on the side. those extra louvres are the way to tell it is not a regular 122. but it could also be a 122R (or was it 122V? not sure *g* ), which is a regular 122, but prepared for later installation of a reverb system.

I used to know a guy who lived in a tiny house. I guess he’d be about eighty by now. When he was younger he was the resident keyboard player at a social club, playing organ for tea dances and so on. When the club closed down they gave him the keyboard set up - a Hammond C3 ( slightly larger than a B3 I believe)and a Leslie speaker. So he had one room of his house that had this in and nothing else. He would turn it on and it would take five minutes to warm up and then, even at quiet levels, you would be immersed in this warm bath of sound. Just a wonderful thing.

I can attest that Norm is as regular a guy as he appears in this video - I paid a visit to the store last year and there he was hanging out on the couch talking to a buddy. Told me to take anything down and give it a go. Made my LA trip a memorable one. Thanks Norm!🤙🏽

Wow! That’s in GREAT SHAPE NORM! No cigarette burns either! As a roadie for a band back in the 70’s we carried one of these from venue to venue ... that’s why my back is broken I guess! ( The spinning tone discs are ALIVE! Yes its a living breathing instrument)

It really resembles an airplane, the starting, all that controls and a pedal. Beautiful.

Way to go, Norm! There’s nothing like a B3 into a Leslie! Best keyboard sound ever created. You sound great on that thing. They’re pigs to move, though...So we fully expect to hear more B3 playing from ya! Jimmy Smith! Vanilla Fudge! How about the intro to Chest Fever by The Band? Great stuff!!
