emotional support is not something service dogs task for, needing emotional support is not a disability. ptsd is a disability, and service dogs can be trained to do dpt, alert before episodes, crowd control or crowd blocking to keep people away (BIG trigger), etc. having a fear of flying or just wanting your dog to be on a plane with you is not a disability. it is a common misconception for people wanting to bring their pets onto flights or into stores that emotional support is a task, and it is not. i have heard too many people claim their dog is an "emotional service dog", which are just ESA's. service dogs can provide emotional support to their handler, but it is NOT a task and does not mean that the dog is a service dog. a service dog must be tasked trained to be an actual service dog, like doing dpt, guiding, balance work, crowd control, medical or psychiatric alerts, ASD work, and more but theres many to list. so no, you cant bring your "service dog" anywhere you want if it's for emotional support, and god help me if it's not trained. edit: and emotional support itself is not a disability.
So glad they are doing this. Occasionally i had a student with a true service dog in class. They are so quiet and well behaved that you do not notice them once the novelty wears off. You are not allowed to pet them. They are there to work.
Please remember that it takes between 6 months and 2 years for your SERVICE DOG to be trained fully. Online "registries" do not make your pet a service animal. Please don't abuse laws that are in place for individuals with disabilities. I and my service dog thank you.

I was in a facebook travel group the other day and some poster said that you could just "declare" your dog a service animal and that would be good enough. I corrected the poster and many others chimed in. Just goes to show that there is still a lot of misinformation out there. Thanks!
Great explanation of the new rules and providing some options for those with emotional support animals. It's unfortunate that the service animal travel guidelines have been abused by a select few compromising the safety and sometimes health of other passengers and flight crew. Having experienced some questionable "emotional support animals" on a few flights myself and reading the number of passenger and crew complaints and incidents, I understand why airlines had to make these changes.
Thank heavens! I’m asthmatic and cat dander is a real issue as I am allergic and will begin wheezing and having trouble breathing within a short time of exposure to a nearby cat.

In Canada allergic people like me can opt to take the next flight (if they can get a seat) when they board or are about to and find out about the animal. - it’s annoying that the person with the cat is not inconvenienced- it is the person with the allergic reaction to the cat. I always have plenty of inhalers. I check that they’re full and fresh with backups. No matter what. But so far I haven’t flown along with someone carrying a cat thankfully. I hope I never do.
I was concerned about allergic passengers when I have flown with my cats in the past. The Airline has never mentioned allergic passengers to me. My sister suggested I look into chartering a four seater airplane at my local small airport. That sounds expensive but I will look into it. I’m contemplating a longish visit to my Sister in Florida. The cats could board here with their Veterinarian, but they were less than thrilled about that during my 2019 trip, so I will look at taking them with me this time. The 4.8 pound Teacup Persian is a fabulous traveler, but the 13 pound Ragdoll has never been on an airplane. This should be interesting.
I too have asthma and I'm allergic to both cats and dogs. I find it both scary and sad that if I object to having a dog beside me I am the one who gets bumped from the flight. Basically people who want to fly with their pets have more rights. Therefore I will keep my mouth shut, use my pills and inhalers and hope that I get trough the flight with minimal breathing difficulty. Sometimes the asthma will keep me up at night hours after being exposed...people who has never gasped for air (it is actually more like not being able to push the air out) will ever understand. I wish NO pets would be allowed in the cabin but, I dare not even say it because pet owner will rip my head off.
Perhaps the airlines can have animal friendly flights and those folks w allergies can stay away from those flights. Even better, certain airlines can be animal friendly and the people w asma can stay away from those airlines. Pretty sure that the animal friendly airlines will get more business just like the animal friendly hotels get more business than the others. The fact is, our dogs are family too and many of us think of them as our children.

When you say “you can take an emotional support animal that is a trained service dog”, I think it would be better to clarify that if you need psychiatric support from a dog, they would have to be trained with tasks that specifically help you. The dog just being around you and providing emotional support without doing a task for you is not considered a service animal, it is considered a pet in the airline travel circumstance. There are psychiatric service dogs for autism, ptsd, dissociation, bipolar, panic attacks, etc, but what makes them a service dog is the training they specifically learn to help the disabled handler. Therapy animals are trained for group settings or in court room settings and are not the same as service animals who only provide service to one handler. This is one of my special interests so I just wanted to speak about some things I think would benefit any one who looks at the comments!

"A very few pet owners have abused the rules". Some pet owners have stuffed their 25# dogs into carriers. The animals can't stand up, turn around, etc. Occasionally (just occasionally) they liberate them mid-flight and let them stand and piss on the seats. They post there "adventures" on social media. I have traveled with a very good pet (proper planning, thorough pet visit within ten days before travel, vaccines, "medical health certificate" by the vet as required by state law, etc.). SuSu, Babee, and Sir Lancelot, from what I have seen, didn't even have a shave and an eye wash. Some people are just too cheap or poor to travel with pets domestically.
My dog was travelling for a year as ESA and on 1 of her flight the lady on my left side borrowed her as she was going home for a funeral, so very bad emotionally and she was so thankful at the end of the flight that my dog helped her during these 9 hours flight! Too bad, people abused it! It was a game changer for real people that needed them...
Big thank you to all the abusers of the rules out there who made it impossible for me to fly with my well trained ESA dog who always slept peacefully resting her head on my feet to keep me calm. I have fear of flying and this was the only way I could fly to visit my ailing parents. This year, I wasn't able to attend my father's funeral. So again thank you to the abusers. Hope karma ruins your lives.
As someone who has spent time training service dogs. As service dog is trained to perform a task. A emotional support animal is NOT a trained animal. What you are saying around 2:50 is misleading because you’re combining the two. Also therapy animals are for other people NOT the handler. The ADA website is a great resource.

But from a trainer point of view, I think its a good rule. The only thing is that I know people that train their own service dogs so with being required to list a place were it was trained can run into a problem since they work independently and not thru organizations.

About time. I travel a lot by plane and have seen far too many pets called support animals and sometimes allowed to roam all over. Often the flight attendants and other airline personnel permit way too much leeway for these animals.
I just read that Delta Airlines doesn't allow them to be in the cargo area in June so they will be able to fly in the cabin with us they're older puppies 8months old plus they will be service dogs when they're fully trained.

Yes, I also tested positive at 3+ for both dogs and cats. I definitely know some people need service animals and definitely don't want to stop someone who really needs one. If the dog is even on the plane several rows from me, I probably will have a couple hours of sneezing after I get off, but that's about it. That's a small price to pay for what I'm sure the service animal provides. It's only when I sleep in the same house with them or have them really in my face that my eyes and throat start swelling up. I have never had a problem with a service animal or owner of a service animal. The animals don't do things like lick me or bite me, and the owners don't usually get in my face. However, I have known some really terrible, entitled people who have exploited the loopholes in the emotional support animal rules of the years, and their animals do lick, and even sometimes bite me. Instead of apologizing, those owners will get in my face and get mad if I merely express that I have allergies and need some space. It never ceases to amaze me the difference between those who are respectful and those who aren't. To be honest, if everyone was respectful and not entitled I probably wouldn't even mind people bringing just their pets even with my allergies as long as people would work with me to make sure I didn't have to get too close and didn't take it personally. It's sad that a handful of self-entitled jerks have to spoil everything for everyone else.
I love your videos. I noticed when in England last year, they have their dogs everywhere, leashed but with them. We have German Shepherds, little too large to take on plane.
When it comes to our jack russels and holidays we either take them in the car with us. OR if we are going abroad then we get an in home sitter to come and look after the dogs and live in the house while we are away. It also means they keep the house clean, are there to sign for any packages that come, print in the mail etc.
You are required to alert the airline like anyone else has too that has a disabling condition service dog handlers have to call ahead to book every single time

Not being rude just sharing info. The term for a dog that is trained specific tasks for a mental disability (other than autism) is called a psychiatric service dog. ESAs don’t have to have training but service dogs do. Again, I am not wanting to be rude. There is just a lot of people who don’t understand that there is a difference.
Hi Laurie, got a little mixed up with ESA paying and non-paying. My dog is 50 lbs. ESA, (don't mind paying his fee) - if we take him on business class, would they accept him (for spacing)? We're flying internationally. Did we still need to fill out document for the 'US Service Animal transportation form?' The paying ESA option - that's where I got a little confused. Thanks so much!
He would have to fly under the plane in cargo he is too big to fly in cabin and you cannot fill out a sd form for the acaa when it's an esa they aren't interchangeable terms a service dog isn't the same thing as an esa

I highly recommend that owner's of ESA or SD do additional research and visit the airlines website. I appreciate that you made this video and it is very informative, but some of the terminology has been used incorrectly. I'm afraid this could be misleading. Emotional Support Animal and Service Animal cannot be used interchangeably. They are two very different qualifications. I understand that you were trying to distinguish the difference, but it came off sounding like you can just call your ESA a Service Animal on paper. This is illegal. Also, Therapy Animals are entirely different qualification that does not have public access rights without explicit permission from the place they are working.

I have an esa dog. I have a letter from my dr. I had an appointment at our local hospital would not let me bring him in bc he was not registered. Can you please tell me how I do that and any other information I need?

I have a French bulldog who is 17kg. Next year I am moving back home in Asia but I am struggling to find airlines to take him as my emotional support dog in the cabin. Do you know which airline allowing snub nosed breed into the cabin to Asia. My issue is he is above the cabin weight limit in most airlines seems to be 8-9kg. I am so desperate and certainly can’t take him on a road up to 10,000km also I don’t drive plus can’t have him on cargo hold either. Any advice and tips will greatly appreciated 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hi, I think he would have to be in the belly of the plane and not allowed in the cabin. Google your airline and in-cabin pets. I would give him some cozy drugs by your vet so he will not be too nervous.
My former spouse and I made military moves with cats. One time was with just two cats where we two people sat in separate “sections” of the plane, each with one cat. I had a collapsible potty box with me. The older cat with my husband complained of her confinement in her carrier. So he carried her carrier and I carried my bag with her box to the bathroom. I prepped the tiny potty box on the floor of the tiny bathroom and placed her in it. She used it! I was so proud of that cat!
This is so sticky. The ada is so strict on service animals and public access. Just existing for support doesn’t constitute a service animal per ada laws. I’m surprised this hasn’t been addressed with the ADA.

I am a bit frustrated now that my bunny isn’t considered a serious ESA. I have really terrible anxiety and he has learned that when I shake because I’m starting to have an anxiety attack to snuggle into my stomach. If it gets really bad and I’m start to hyperventilate he stretched up and kicks my neck until I calm down and hug him. I’ve trained him to do this for the last 7 months so I can start traveling.
This feels like veiled advice for people who aren’t disabled in any way and want to take Poopsy with them on the plane. Untrained ESA consumer pet dogs are a fulcrum for disaster. I have a physical disability and require a task trained service dog. I dread running across these jumped up pets in public because they’re almost always out of control and almost always badly behaved and almost always totally disruptive to my working dog. At some point in this video, the advice is to drug the dog that is being faked as a necessary accoutrement into insensibility; or, to let the ESA dog relieve itself in the bathroom people use but use a puppy relief pad. Wouldn’t you like to just go into a bathroom after a dog has been asked to relieve in a place like that, especially when the dog is not used to doing any public stuff like this. This is antithetical to advice given to real service dog owners. We are taught a different way. Of course, a pet owner could never duplicate this way. That’s why they don’t let pets on public transport. People think that being disabled means carrying a menagerie with them and making a public scene. If you’re really disabled, you know what a laughable thinking process this really is.

Even the most trained SD could be anxious on a flight, especially if its their first. A mild sedative may not be a bad idea. And, if it's an especially long flight, a SD that has flown many times may begin to get anxious, and a mild sedative may be in order.
Service dogs do not need to be professionally trained they need to have the right temperament and trained for public access and tasks and you have to be disabled the ada law is your friend you shouldn't even be asking this sht cuz you haven't read up on sd laws period

I have friends who have therapy dogs and take them to retirement homes and hospitals, but one has a Great Pyrenees who is over 100 pounds she uses for balance and physical support. They flew with him in first class to Hawaii last year, and she said he was very well behaved. The flight crew and passengers loved him! He is a trained service dog! I have 2 dogs, but both would be too large to fit under the seat and would want all the passengers to pet them. I just hire a lady to care for them in my home, so they don't have to be in a strange place. I don't fly or go out of town often, so they are fine!

So do I still need a travel letter? I’m a college student who is trying to fly a cat I recently got while at school home. I’m currently getting him registered as an esa and I’m working on a housing letter so he can stay in my dorm. I know most US airlines aren’t allowing esa’s anymore and are treating them as a normal pets. So does that mean I no longer need a ESA travel letter?
Also, I won’t be flying internationally any time soon if that information was needed. I just don’t want waste the extra money getting the letter is it’s not necessary/recommend.

You can't have a service dog trained in a matter of months, it takes at least two years and there's a lot of other requirements that come with it. But you can always fly the dog out as a pet, that's always been an option that people forget about. They should really require ESAs to have some form of training even in housing though.
I am sure many are sad and mad. I start missing my dog and cat a few days before I even pack. Maybe board him for a short time first while you're at home. We love Rover. Some will even let the dog sleep in their bed.

As a legit SD handler, I’m so happy about this! ESAs are just pets (they are!)

As someone who has spent time training service dogs. As service dog is trained to perform a task. A emotional support animal is NOT a trained animal. What you are saying around 2:50 is misleading because you’re combining the two. Also therapy animals are for other people NOT the handler. The ADA website is a great resource.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie So I have an ESA and will have to pay when I move out of my home state and have to fly back home so I’m not a fan of that, I will still pay. But from a trainer point of view, I think its a good rule. The only thing is that I know people that train their own service dogs so with being required to list a place were it was trained can run into a problem since they work independently and not thru organizations.

About time. I travel a lot by plane and have seen far too many pets called support animals and sometimes allowed to roam all over. Often the flight attendants and other airline personnel permit way too much leeway for these animals.

I just read that Delta Airlines doesn't allow them to be in the cargo area in June so they will be able to fly in the cabin with us they're older puppies 8months old plus they will be service dogs when they're fully trained.

Yes, I also tested positive at 3+ for both dogs and cats. I definitely know some people need service animals and definitely don't want to stop someone who really needs one. If the dog is even on the plane several rows from me, I probably will have a couple hours of sneezing after I get off, but that's about it. That's a small price to pay for what I'm sure the service animal provides. It's only when I sleep in the same house with them or have them really in my face that my eyes and throat start swelling up. I have never had a problem with a service animal or owner of a service animal. The animals don't do things like lick me or bite me, and the owners don't usually get in my face. However, I have known some really terrible, entitled people who have exploited the loopholes in the emotional support animal rules of the years, and their animals do lick, and even sometimes bite me. Instead of apologizing, those owners will get in my face and get mad if I merely express that I have allergies and need some space. It never ceases to amaze me the difference between those who are respectful and those who aren't. To be honest, if everyone was respectful and not entitled I probably wouldn't even mind people bringing just their pets even with my allergies as long as people would work with me to make sure I didn't have to get too close and didn't take it personally. It's sad that a handful of self-entitled jerks have to spoil everything for everyone else.

I love your videos. I noticed when in England last year, they have their dogs everywhere, leashed but with them. We have German Shepherds, little too large to take on plane.
Just a little lol. I miss mine a few days before my trip.
When it comes to our jack russels and holidays we either take them in the car with us. OR if we are going abroad then we get an in home sitter to come and look after the dogs and live in the house while we are away. It also means they keep the house clean, are there to sign for any packages that come, print in the mail etc.

ADA doesn't apply here. It would be the ACAA (air carrier access act).

You are required to alert the airline like anyone else has too that has a disabling condition service dog handlers have to call ahead to book every single time

The term for a dog that is trained specific tasks for a mental disability (other than autism) is called a psychiatric service dog. ESAs don’t have to have training but service dogs do.
Again, I am not wanting to be rude. There is just a lot of people who don’t understand that there is a difference.

Hi Laurie, got a little mixed up with ESA paying and non-paying. My dog is 50 lbs. ESA, (don't mind paying his fee) - if we take him on business class, would they accept him (for spacing)? We're flying internationally. Did we still need to fill out document for the 'US Service Animal transportation form?' The paying ESA option - that's where I got a little confused. Thanks so much!

He would have to fly under the plane in cargo he is too big to fly in cabin and you cannot fill out a sd form for the acaa when it's an esa they aren't interchangeable terms a service dog isn't the same thing as an esa

I highly recommend that owner's of ESA or SD do additional research and visit the airlines website.
I appreciate that you made this video and it is very informative, but some of the terminology has been used incorrectly. I'm afraid this could be misleading.
Emotional Support Animal and Service Animal cannot be used interchangeably. They are two very different qualifications. I understand that you were trying to distinguish the difference, but it came off sounding like you can just call your ESA a Service Animal on paper. This is illegal. Also, Therapy Animals are entirely different qualification that does not have public access rights without explicit permission from the place they are working.
That is such a great tip for ESA travelers.
Please can you direct me to , Where I can Ifind this form to fill in for my pet? I am flying international next month. I have sooo many forms and appointments. I am so glad I saw this video. I did not see this on the Delta site.
I have links in the description box, but you can google your airline and pet restrictions and click on their links. This paperwork is just for trained service dogs. If you are flying with just a pet, there is no paperwork until you check in.

I have an esa dog. I have a letter from my dr. I had an appointment at our local hospital would not let me bring him in bc he was not registered. Can you please tell me how I do that and any other information I need?

These laws are discriminatory. Children get on planes who cry the whole time yet they don't get these kind of rules against them.
on our last flight our dog was quieter and calmer than all the kids on the plane COMBINED.

I have a French bulldog who is 17kg. Next year I am moving back home in Asia but I am struggling to find airlines to take him as my emotional support dog in the cabin. Do you know which airline allowing snub nosed breed into the cabin to Asia. My issue is he is above the cabin weight limit in most airlines seems to be 8-9kg. I am so desperate and certainly can’t take him on a road up to 10,000km also I don’t drive plus can’t have him on cargo hold either. Any advice and tips will greatly appreciated 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Cats are actually pretty easy to train. Canada allows Service cats because they can be task trained.

I love hearing about all the things people can train cats to do. I tried leash training for like 2 days and gave up lol.
My former spouse and I made military moves with cats. One time was with just two cats where we two people sat in separate “sections” of the plane, each with one cat. I had a collapsible potty box with me. The older cat with my husband complained of her confinement in her carrier. So he carried her carrier and I carried my bag with her box to the bathroom. I prepped the tiny potty box on the floor of the tiny bathroom and placed her in it. She used it! I was so proud of that cat!

This is so sticky. The ada is so strict on service animals and public access. Just existing for support doesn’t constitute a service animal per ada laws. I’m surprised this hasn’t been addressed with the ADA.

ADA and handlers have fought for rights for 15 years. We’re not going to allow pet owners and ESA handlers to try to make them slack off.

I am a bit frustrated now that my bunny isn’t considered a serious ESA. I have really terrible anxiety and he has learned that when I shake because I’m starting to have an anxiety attack to snuggle into my stomach. If it gets really bad and I’m start to hyperventilate he stretched up and kicks my neck until I calm down and hug him. I’ve trained him to do this for the last 7 months so I can start traveling.

Rabbits for horribly in an airport environment. It would be unkind to take a rabbit in a plane.
This feels like veiled advice for people who aren’t disabled in any way and want to take Poopsy with them on the plane. Untrained ESA consumer pet dogs are a fulcrum for disaster. I have a physical disability and require a task trained service dog. I dread running across these jumped up pets in public because they’re almost always out of control and almost always badly behaved and almost always totally disruptive to my working dog.
At some point in this video, the advice is to drug the dog that is being faked as a necessary accoutrement into insensibility; or, to let the ESA dog relieve itself in the bathroom people use but use a puppy relief pad. Wouldn’t you like to just go into a bathroom after a dog has been asked to relieve in a place like that, especially when the dog is not used to doing any public stuff like this. This is antithetical to advice given to real service dog owners. We are taught a different way. Of course, a pet owner could never duplicate this way. That’s why they don’t let pets on public transport.
People think that being disabled means carrying a menagerie with them and making a public scene. If you’re really disabled, you know what a laughable thinking process this really is.

Midazolam as "pre-sedation" helps, too.
Even the most trained SD could be anxious on a flight, especially if its their first. A mild sedative may not be a bad idea.
And, if it's an especially long flight, a SD that has flown many times may begin to get anxious, and a mild sedative may be in order.

Service dogs do not need to be professionally trained they need to have the right temperament and trained for public access and tasks and you have to be disabled the ada law is your friend you shouldn't even be asking this sht cuz you haven't read up on sd laws period

I have friends who have therapy dogs and take them to retirement homes and hospitals, but one has a Great Pyrenees who is over 100 pounds she uses for balance and physical support. They flew with him in first class to Hawaii last year, and she said he was very well behaved. The flight crew and passengers loved him! He is a trained service dog! I have 2 dogs, but both would be too large to fit under the seat and would want all the passengers to pet them. I just hire a lady to care for them in my home, so they don't have to be in a strange place. I don't fly or go out of town often, so they are fine!

So do I still need a travel letter? I’m a college student who is trying to fly a cat I recently got while at school home. I’m currently getting him registered as an esa and I’m working on a housing letter so he can stay in my dorm. I know most US airlines aren’t allowing esa’s anymore and are treating them as a normal pets. So does that mean I no longer need a ESA travel letter?
Also, I won’t be flying internationally any time soon if that information was needed. I just don’t want waste the extra money getting the letter is it’s not necessary/recommend.
I would thoroughly research your airline's pet policy.
Don't waste your money on any ESA registry. They're all scams, have no legal backing, and aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

You can't have a service dog trained in a matter of months, it takes at least two years and there's a lot of other requirements that come with it. But you can always fly the dog out as a pet, that's always been an option that people forget about. They should really require ESAs to have some form of training even in housing though.
I am sure many are sad and mad. I start missing my dog and cat a few days before I even pack. Maybe board him for a short time first while you're at home. We love Rover. Some will even let the dog sleep in their bed.

Well some handlers actually train their service dogs to save money and time. I do this and my dog knows commands that even kids don’t.
