Frist time commenter. I'm from the same town in Norway that several of the members grew up inn. Quite a few of them are childhood friends of mine. Maybe you'll find it interesting, but they didn't really start in jazz. They first met at something we call "janitsjar korps". It manly contains of brass, woodwind and drums, and they perform at parades. Guess it's kinda like your marching bands. They then decided to start a "bookclub" where they listended to jazz. Since they were young in the nineties, they were also into heavy metal, shoegaze, grunge, techno/house, hip hop, electronica, post rock, and of course Radiohead. And the rest is history...
Ps:Yes, three of them are siblings (two brothers and a sister)
    Pps: Pardon my english

That's awesome! I love how jazz was something they slipped into and then injected all of their influences into it and came up with this unique stuff.

Drummer is actually a leader and frontman of group. He is a beast live, going through half a dozen sticks during show...

Yes!! I waited so long to find the best moment to suggest this song and was honestly a bit heartbroken when it didn't make it into unusual jazz week, which I thought was the perfect category for this. Seeing it as a special selection now is such a nice surprise. Jaga Jazzist is one of my favorite bands and they deserve so much more attention. Glad you liked it. I would definitely suggest "Big City Music" from the same live session if you want to check out more. I could just as well have suggested that instead of this for unusual jazz week. Both songs are off the Starfire album, which is their best album imo. Though I really enjoy Pyramid and One-Armed Bandit too.
I understand that the ending didn't quite work for you. It might help to let you know that the studio version of this track ends with a reprise of the bass clarinet solo, which I think works better. I still prefer this live version overall though, just because it's easier to appreciate all the different instruments in a dynamic live setting.
Thank you Anders for suggesting this as a special selection, and thank you Bryan for the analysis!

Hell yes! Jaga Jazzist is one of my all time favorites. I've seen them live, and it's a goosebump bonanza. So so so good. Hope you get to react to them some more. Also, UA-cam hid this reaction from me. Bad youtube

Oh damn dude, I am so glad you reacted to this! You are going to have so much fun diving into their stuff!
It's aIso a gift to me, so thank you so much. I've only heard their albums A Living Room Hush and The Stix but they are both fantastic (albums 2 and 3 from the band). At some point I just didn't continue listening to them - distracted by other sounds I was hearing at the time, I guess - but being subscribed to you brought them back to my attention with this video. This song is off a later album which I've never heard, and it blew me away, so now I have to catch up with this band's work after losing touch and I am thrilled. Thank you, Anders, for making the special request!

Awesome to see them on the channel. I hadn't listened to them in like 15 years and i randomly just started listening to them again a few weeks ago. There is a lot of newer stuff i need to dive into.

So good! I’m in love with this band for the last couple of years! The whole album is great, but this song is special though. The bit with the vocals is astonishing!

One of my all time favorite bands ever since they released their fifth album One-Armed Bandit. I've seen them live once and they had the same fantastic sound as here and were ever so playful with their instruments :) The footage is actually on YT - video is called Jaga Jazzist LIVE | | Mezinárodní den Jazzu | International Jazz Day 2019. The drummer threw a t-shirt at the crowd after the concert (around 1:13:00 in that video), I caught it, and, coincidentally, I'm wearing it today. It's good quality just like their music.

Hey hi Bryan, I forgot you did already had Jaga Jazzist on your channel while commenting something else on your channel yesterday ! They have such a varied catalog that indeed you have to dig a lot to find out all the amplitude of the musical spectrum/creativity they have, but this song is already interesting to have an idea of what they can do...(I see this song as a funny journey, unlike some other more "dramatic" songs. Besides, if you wonder, (even if I can't certify they picked this name on purpose regarding that), Oban is a small beautiful town on the West Coast of Scotland, with beautiful sightseeings, such as that multicolor street with all differently coloured houses and....a tiny but nice malt whisky distillery ! Cheers !

Yeah, loved everything about this and this band is immediately going high up on my list of bands to check out. Killer technical chops, but without forgetting the catchy melodies and funky, danceable rhythms. Also moves through a lot of different sections and they were all fun and interesting. I'm not sure they all served to make for a coherent whole (there's a bit of "here's this idea, and now here's another idea"), and some of the sections do get a bit repetitive, but these are rather minor complaints compared to all the good points here.

Another band that’s kinda similar to this is GoGo Penguin. They’re incredible.

Jaga Jazzist was one of the maybe first 5-10 electronic acts that came highly recommended by other prog-rock / prog-metal listeners when I wanted to delve deeper into electronic music than Tangerine Dream and Pink Floyd. As a fan of prog, jazz, and electronic music, I really like them.
I can certainly forgive a bit of somewhat bland noodling at the end of a great performance - but I do get why you had the impression you had.

The instrument you called a baritone is an alto horn (often called tenor horn in english). It is tuned in E flat while a baritone is tuned in B flat and thus slightly smaller.

Thanks for that. I looked up both the Baritone and the alto/tenor horn and they look very similar with the main difference being the tubing, which of course is going to affect the range (hence the names). I'll probably start referring to all of those shapes as simply horns unless I can 100% pinpoint their range in a track. Thanks again!

    Very cool indeed!
About the bass clarinet, couldn't there be varieties, lika a "sub-bass" one? 😊
    Great analysis as usual❤

Another tip to check out: Earthworks: Up North. (Bill Bruford’s jazz group). The live version on UA-cam is better than the studio version .
