now that you're here, you gotta do The Magician on the same album lol
I was going to recommend The New Sound from the album as it's an instrumental and I think he'd be really into it, but The Magician is such a great one too. Honestly, it's hard not to recommend every single song.
The magician is so insane its already become one of my favourite songs of all time in the very short time it's been out
this album absolutely deserves a full reaction stream. so worth it
the entire album is insane
Great reaction I agree with your lyrical breakdown, it's a really an impressive feat to portray a character who is on the face of it disgusting and has these morally repugnant beliefs/ideas about things with humanity and empathy without it coming off as affirming/supporting them and Geordie rides that line perfectly. The whole album's full of these stories of gross incel adjacent dudes and really hits at the sat emptiness at the heart of that worldview, plus it's backed by fucking amazing jazz rock.
Ive also had this album on repeat all week. Not my usual thing but by god its a masterpiece, bought tickets to see him live in a couple weeks.
Song of the year for me. The last 2 minutes are brutal
It shocked me that before you went into the lyrics you gave an analysis of what the song could mean just by the music that was spot on. Then you listened to the the lyrics and said your read of the song doesn't support the lyrics. OK maybe not spot on. Maybe no rebranding going on but of course doing the same thing over and over. I guess the variation would be the attempt to make it new every time. Like he hasn't hired her for the next week and the next week but this is actually genuine and new. Of course underneath he is building anxiety and desperation. "All of this energy put towards nothing and that leads towards a break down." That's exactly right. You might say he's not putting energy towards anything but money is energy. I could imagine that he probably is spending and acting like he's a lot richer than he really is and emotionally he is trying hard, putting on a facade 24/7. Eventually the cracks show and the -something- crumbles (ha ha what's the poetic word to put there?). The music tells the real story of what's happening at the psyche, soul, emotional level.
Fantastic interpretation. And that gives me a lot more appreciation for Geordie's ability to use the music not just as a device to go along with the lyrics but to also tell a component of the story that the lyrics don't fully delve into.
Hey Bryan! Thanks for an earnest and committed analysis as always!
I was going to type out a very long passage about how your analysis of the music overlaps with the lyrics, then you finally made the connection yourself at the very end of the video lol so I can subtract a few lines from my comment XD
Anyway, yes, I think the constant rebranding of oneself maps pretty neatly onto the rebranding of the music. But to further reinforce this idea, I think if we assume that we're simply getting access to a single instance of this event that continues for days, weeks, etc. then suddenly we can see the musical rebranding not as a reflection of each individual line in the song, but as a representation of the delusional tenacity of the narrator (even if this tenacity is only in his head, which is what I kinda think but that doesn't really matter too much). This tenacity, even if frantically executed (think of the desperate diversity of instruments, the polyrhythms that are intriguing but don't always sound fun or smooth, the high energy not necessarily of the drum kit but the overall layer of percussion in this song, the 'everything and the kitchen sink' approach to which instrument serves which function), will have diminishing returns (again, assuming it even happens outside the narrator's mind in the first place) and lead ultimately to tragedy (and constantly foreshadow that tragedy with miniature tragedies of sexism, transactional dominance, etc).
But all of the cool soundscapes that this song presents to us DO give us, in my opinion, access into how the narrator sees meaning in this approach to life. Which is wild because even he can't get beyond the fleeting nature of his approach. In this sense the narrator is rebranding in his own mind without even knowing it, this is why I say delusional. It also reinforces the empathic response you have to him. I think Greep does a superb job throughout this album portraying his character(s) this way! It's worth a listen, even if on your own!!!
anyway, thanks again! Turns out this was still a relatively lengthy passage lol
Dude, you HAVE to do the rest of the album too, or at least the magician, it's so good
Hmm, enjoyed this but not Magician.
glad you’re reviewing this one!
Oh god this albums amazing you have you to check out Magician it's a song that was in black midis live sets before they split, it's quite long but it's probably Greeps best song
Yeah, heard it live 2 years ago lost my mind
omg, i waited for this. i hope you'll check out more from the album. especially the magician, as if waltz and through a war should be interesting.
Oh yes, this is really good!! Halfway through. Thanks for introducing.
Your mic volume here is maybe 10% too low since I cannot understand from under the music.
Sure, it is busy and a bit strange music, but isn't that like a common feature in some popular jazz? I wish I could remember as many observations about songs on 1-2 listens as you do!
Depends on the jazz but most of the mainstream stuff isn't quite busy or strange, though I suppose the strange part is subjective. Jazz standards tend to use an AABA structure where the A is the main melody and the B is the solo; the A is designed to be memorable while the B is literally just one person playing at a time.
Now once we get into Bebop, Free Jazz, and Avant-Garde Jazz things can definitely get strange and busy 😅

You can definitely catch it with following listens, it just probably slipped your attention since you had very few listens under your belt, and since the song is really dense, but the chorus is pretty clearly defined. The instrumental at the very start of the song, with the "Let's Groove"-sounding bassline and the groups of three hits mainly focused on the rhythm guitar is the chorus section, although in its first instance it features a short guitar solo instead of vocals.
analysing this song for an assignment and i think everything you described about the music accurately describes the character portrayed in the song. An insecure man manipulating women time and time again putting on a bravado when underneath he is insecure.
If you're able, this whole album would be a really fun video
As always great breakdown. Have you considered coming back to will wood? I think you will have quite a bit to unpack with Self-ish and In case I make it.
I'll definitely be revisiting some Will Wood in the future. Right now I'm just trying to open up some time in my recording schedule so that I can check out more than 1 album a week.
4:25 They're not triplets. There's three of them, but they're the first three of a group of four, with a rest on the fourth.
My only issue with this song is I can't unhear the "Let's Groove" bass line
I don't see how that's an issue. Hell it makes the song better I think because Let's Groove is an awesome tune in of itself
Not getting the hype at all. Nothing surprising me here, and his singing is abysmal.
I like the ambition, but it's all over the place, it's far too long, and it's a complete mess of production.
