I don't know if the author of this video is going to read this lines. My martial art heart belongs to the Japanese style of karate do, but Kali/Eskrima is helping me right now in order to control myself. I am not having a good time now, recently I quit a job, but remembering my training in karate and the few things I am doing in kali are helping me with this issue. Thank you very much, Daniel. I share a good word in Spanish with you, Dios te Bendiga (God bless you) greetings from Venezuela
A short video that made my mind clear about its meaning. So all are almost the same, some schools will only have a different way on training on how they teach their technique but using the three words are just the same. I noticed that Filipinos in general do not understand the meaning of Arnis, Kali and Eskrima.
Thank you. I am just getting into stick fighting and was confused as I have heard it many different ways and applications. This finally makes sense, lol.
Yeah I studied FMA a Little bit when I was younger I still have the sticks but I forgot most of the forms but I still like to hit the bag with my sticks but my Filipina wife and father when I asked them that I used study kali/eskrima they didn’t really know those terms they just call it Arnis in Manila I guess!! So thanks for cleaning it up for me!
What I've found (in my experience, at least) is that there are actually some distinct differences in the three arts, possibly due to coming from three distinct regions of the Philippines. Kali seems to be more dedicated to a balanced-weapon, extreme CQC style, typically 2 knives or 2 hands. There is typically very little distance between opponents and it tends to be violent and short-lived combat. Escrima seems to originate from the Spanish word "Esgrima", meaning "fencing". It seems to focus on one weapon plus an empty hand and seems to be more aggressive and offensive. Arnis likely is a shortened and localized translation of the Spanish term "Arnes de mano", meaning "Armor of the hands", as in my experience, it seems to be more defensive oriented. Then again,, I'm just a dumb American. I don't really KNOW anything. This is just my opinion.
I’m wondering if there is any relation between Filipino Kali and the Indian deity Kali. And as a Filipino American who is fascinated by linguistics and etymology, thanks for the breakdown. And stop putting yourself down, this was a fun run through of the different names. Thinking on it now maybe Kali was derived from the deity Kali by trading with the neighboring Asian countries of Indonesia and Thailand who both practice a bit of Buddhism.
@@lukeamparo6586 Kali name is most probably from the pre-Hispanic Filipino term for blades/fencing - "kalis". So rather it have no relation to Indian mythology.
Using that same logic, nobody should give a fuck about your name. Youre more than just a name youre you, so when you apply for a job, or get your license screw names, whats the name of that drink screw that its a fucking drink. Yeah identity is not impt.
Thanks for the information,I now know the FMA are very diverse and and have their own unique variations. For me personally I like Kali/Esrima with sticks and batons.
Yes, Kali in manila are used like a fancy technique used in sports such as PE Class and are really unusable in real life situation, The owner of the channel itself doesn't know how to use it effectively for real life situation as he's teaching it as a sport. And The real name of Arnis is Doce Pares and the first organization was Eskrima De Campo, Kali was from Mindanao and Cagayan, Manila has a little to none real master practitioner so if you want to get some real life situation usable technique go for Place Like JDCIO in cebu, or some real good instructor in Dipolog mindanao. but some instructors won't easily teach it to anyone so you might have a hard time persuading them. You might also want to invest some money as you might stay in the island for a few months 5-6 until you get the basics and learn it yourself in the long run.
It straight up can vary from town to town, region to region even within L/V/M. The Philippines is an archipelago made up of multiple cultures, all these systems are a case of similar because neighbors, but grew up differently hahaha. That's why two different arnis styles can look completely different but suddenly a style calling itself arnis can look like one that calls itself kali. It's usually straight up just a regional thing, that's why the usual practice nowadays is to just call it Filipino Martial Arts for convenience- i prefer calling it arnis, myself.
So for a beginner in FMA, what school/style do you recommend. I am a petite woman... which would make the most sense in everyday application? At some point, I would like to pick up other styles but close range / self defense is what I am thinking thus far.
Kuya Daniel can I learn Kali on my own or do I need to attend a school that will teach me this discipline. Thanks 👍 Hope you answer this question of mine.
hello again ! i was watching this video and asking myself if you know something about "matrag" a stick combat from argelia. You know about it? can you make a video about the similaritys and differences betwen matrag and kali? Saludos desde españa. Hablas español?
Try checking out Barques Escrima !! his style of FMA is super practical, effective and realistic.. I think you could take a lot of power points from his teachings on the craft as I have.
Base style is KAMAO. Currently learning De Campo Original. And I pick up random things informally when I like them. :))) I'm not part of any club though. :)
Silat is its own thing! Silat being the catch all term for a martial method throughout southeast asia, the Philippines has its own silat as well but it isn't as widespread as arnis is because it's still very much a spiritual practice usually and not taught outside of that context. You're more likely to run into indonesian silat or variants thereof.
I could never understand the grappling in kali or machete fight. I have seen actual machete fight and it is over in split seconds, either arms cut off neck chop. A trained martial arts will never commit offensive act to allow opponents to grab and be in danger. Always adjust forward , backward or sideways to maintain distance. My training in single stick 60 years ago, my instructor was so fast beating with 4 ft stick in and out sideways. their is no way for me to grapple because it is so fast , you move in , he slide back and hit, i would never get a chance to close it is so fast. My training with Mas Oyama Karate and Aikido is also adjusting distance on weapons. If I have a 4 ft stick, no one close to me without getting hit. if it is a machete the fight will over on split seconds. just my opinion.
Kali, Arnis, & Eskrima original from India "Kalaripayattu " (Mother of all martial art) 2500 + years ago From Ramayana Time That art carried out from Indian Reagion . For Ex, Karambit Is discover by BHIM & Hanuman (caractor from Ramayan & Mahabharat)
I was under the impression that Arnis Was unarmed, Eskrima is with bladed weapons and Kali is stick oriented but the techniques can all be interchanged.

They are correct but they do not know the martial art. When they say Arnis they are just referring to the stick not the martial art that you studied.

My favourite kind of martial arts

Arnis/Eskrima= Sticks, Bolo/Itak
