EXTRAORDINARY ICON - A TALE OF TWO YACHTS

- Icon Yachts are a company made up of some extraordinary individuals...working in an extraordinary industry...and building some extraordinary products!
This video is the first in a series that shall be documenting the construction of two very significant yachts; one, a 280' Tim Heywood designed Superyacht, and the other a remarkable and unique conversion project designed by Redman Whitely Dixon.
I have visited ICON a few times now, and the thing that stands out the most to me about this company is their commitment to research and development so that the yachts they produce are robust and fit for purpose.
I look forward to returning in February of next year to see how they are progressing! - Авто та транспорт
1 minute in and I am feeling like I am watching David Attenborough of yachts; I want more and longer videos already!
- Where's my popcorn!? :)
Man, I love this channel so much!
It always amazes me how people can thumbs down a video which is extremely well presented, articulate and factually spot on! As I watch this there are 97 views, 25 thumbs up and 5 down!
Thanks Andy, there was a little negative feedback about the UA-cam premiere feature. I think the dislikes were before the video started and to register their feelings about it. Not sure if I'll use premiere again to be honest...probably not. I may live stream some of the next visit to Icon though!
Andy James : Nothing surprises me any more, given what 40% of folks are fanatically supporting in the USA.
I think people do this to teach UA-cam what type of video they like, if they start to watch and don't like the content style they can Thumb Down in the hope they see less.
I wouldn't take it personally. :)
@Kaushik....you are to research what happened to the trump owned yacht that was reprocessed. It was refurbished and given away....it appears in Million Dollar Yachts....As the commentator of that video say about him indirectly. It doesn't matter how much you make it who you are you are best left to your own class of people. Trump don't fit in with the super rich of smart people. He just tried to push his way into parties and ushered out.
@@Yachtsforsaleblog I don't know David, as I viewed this it shows over 15,130 views 578 likes and 12 or so dislikes, so if anything you gotta be doing something right. Oh yeah 68.2 m = 223.75 ft not 280 ft. just saying!
Thanks again, you're the best presenter in the industry, greetings.
Think I'm going to very much enjoy this series.
Sir, your videos are indescribably inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm pumped to see future updates on that Icon 280.
I like the part where you talk about Icon thinking outside the box while standing next to an Icon model that is literally inside a box. :)
Really enjoy the channel!
Haha!
You saw what I did there!
Thanks for watching!
Ragnar What a fabulous vessel it promises to be, looking forward to seeing more. If ever I could afford a super Yacht then this would be it.
David so nice to see genuine passion.
Cheers
Amazing video. Well done!
Interesting design, very nice style they have. I look forward to seeing more from them. Thanks for highlighting them.
Another great video, really like the idea of an explorer, and that one looks amazing!
As always, great content and excellent delivery. Thanks so much for your videos.
I like the idea a lot, about using an old anchor handling vessel, to redo as a luxury explorer vessel! 👍🏻
Great video as usual.
Extremely interesting I look forward to seeing more on these two projects. Good job.
Great content! Would love to see more Icon Yachts! Keep it up
This is what I'm talking about :) Keep up good work!
Fascinating
Well done..... Most interesting!
Another fascinating video. I have always enjoyed explorer yachts. They offer a much more fascinating and diverse set of possible locations to explore. I would think one would get bored going to the "same old" beaches again and again.
Fantastic video! Would love to see the technical spaces on both of these yachts. Would be fascinating to understand the differences between a bespoke superyacht engine room and one that started life as a commercial vessel. Thanks again!
Congrats on 30K+ subs
Very professional and interesting post. By the way......the 12 dislikes are probably envious competitors in this market. :-)
Just be CONFIDENT SIR, YOU HAVE DONE EXCELENCE , SOME TIMES YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERY ONE, GOD BLESS YOU
There are several low time US Navy former research vessels sitting in Washington state, always thought they would make wonderful explorer yachts....they already have ice class hulls, diesel electric drives, huge cranes, commercial galleys etc.. one can always dream
Another great video:)
I am always proud to express my Dutch heritage but when seeing your vlogs I get even more proud. I would like to know more about the economics and in specific when looking at engines. In commercial vessels as the pre-Ragnar it is less of an issue as I would imagine any private individual would look upon. How do they change the existing engine array to match the luxury yachting specs for consumption?
That ice breaker hull is very interesting. My interest in a bigger boat will always be with a boat that can go just about anywhere that is wet.
You're excited!? I'm almost peeing myself here. Ragnar looks so damned awesome!!
Genius idea/concept to come up with.
Thanks Stephanie, I'm flying back there in a few weeks for the next update video.
I’m a big fan of your videos AND how informative they are. It’s fascinating to see all the different types of yachts and there systems. If possible could you show the different types stabilization systems they use on yachts? For instance my wife is no fan of a rocking ship.
Looking forward to it
The Dutch have hundreds of years experience with ship innovations and ship building, You know that Dutch designed ships are always very well build, and very beautiful to look at.
The Dutch are well known for pursuing themselves in building ships with incredible eye for details.
Always the newest innovations, "often developed here in the Netherlands" are used, that gives you a head start on the rest.
Here we are 2 years later, and Ragnar turned out to be probably the most awesome yacht on the water today!
Conceptualization of older ships to a future design is awesome, for 12 thumbs down lacks imagination.
Hey Dave, great video by the way.
can you please note in a somewhat itemized way the savings of a conversion versus a build from the ground-up in a future video.
I think it would be awesome to see the side-by-side difference
More please!!!
I cannot wait to own one. I hated the design of yachts until I saw an ICON.
Two years wait time! Ok thats it in buying a dingy!
Commercial (and especially military)hulls are still the best
The money and time that goes into making them as efficient as possible is way higher than on any superyacht that gets his own hull
Ragnar is spectacular! Icon is a name I was unfamiliar with. Problem Solved!
Pardon me, I was wondering if I might make a request. Could you produce a video, strictly on the "Best Luxury Expedition Yachts" and what companies are at the forefront, concerning Luxury expedition Yachts. Possibly explain the Ice class rating system that is used, and how that works. Could you not just have a hull, that is rated to safely sail through broken up ice, but not rated to break ice per say? From what I have read, Ice Breaker Hulls are rather rough through the water, is that true? Thank you for you'r time, you'r channel is superb!
I will buy it if the pop-up television is included.
this channel beats the quality of video than channels with millions of subscribers
very very very great video !! Thank you
Both are amazing but completely different regarding the way you are going to use them
I think i will take Ragnar :D (in my dream maybe :p )
Can you make more video about conversation yacht pro and cons
Already converted yacht please
I love this chennel very much. But this channel will be more attractive if yachts come with their net cost along with texes
Fabulous video as always. Just wondering how are Icon getting around the comfort issue that ice-class hulls traditionally suffer from? Thanks
I am curious how much of the overall cost of producing a yacht like Ragnar is reduced by using an existing hull like that? Or to manufacture a hull of similar strength and quality, brand new for a megayacht like that, what would be the cost increase? It is very rare to see such hardiness on private boats.
Hi David,
Great work as usual. I love your videos and look forward to following the progress when you return to Icon.
PS: the folks at Icon should really change the project name to "Ragna", which is the feminine version in the Nordic languages ("Ragnar" being the masculine). Unless they intentionally want this amazing vessel to have a boy's name...
Thanks Hans...I’ll be there next week!
Ragnar. Now you have my attention. I must do some figuring and thinking. She checks every box for me. Room for submersable, Ice hull, and I am guessing long range. The boat I buy will be for personal use, no charter, but she will need to be a real blue water boat. I fully intend on crossing oceans and seeing the world while I can. No more deck of an aircraft carrier like when I was young 40 years ago. As a rule it will be me and the crew. Sometimes friends or family, or crew friends and family. In my family I am the only one who doest get sea sick, and doesn't mind rough seas. It's all about water tight integrity, strength, and power. I like this one. Let me do some thinking.
Great video, thanks. Question: Do hull's degrade in strength over time and if so, how does the likes of ICON resolve this on donor vessels.
I was thinking the same. Metal fatigue and all that. Probably they check thoroughly for microscopic fractures etc.
One question I have which no one ever seems to address anywhere, ever, not on super-mega yachts, not super yachts, not on smaller yachts. How is security handled? If you are at anchor for a few days or more, is there a night watch? I am mean specifically security watch. I'm certain the mega yachts have personal cleaning near all night long to avoid bothering guests during day, and then tend to cabins during the day when people are out and about.
I am searching for the launching video of Ragnar . would love to see it finished
Thanks David, now I can’t focus in my BioChem class cuz I’m day dreaming about Legacy and traveling the world 😂
I am elated with the improvement on sound quality!
Presentation and information has always been paramount, but sound quality has been lacking in previous videos.
every sentence you say is like a grand opening.
Hey David, big fan of your work. Congrats on all of your success it is truly deserved.
I have a few questions about this project:
Why would a client tailor a yacht so specifically for a certain purpose like ice breaking and traveling in icy conditions, doesn't that affect the performance in other circumstances? I mean he is not going to always have the yacht near ice and in my opinion he is losing out on ammenities and the possibility of charter in certain seasons. I understand the simple answer may be "he enjoys ice yachting" haha but I was wondering if there was a more complex decision behind.
Also, what do you see as the biggest downsides to building such a specific yacht? I came up with some but I am not sure, surely the market for selling it is truly limited and in no way will it retain value as well as other vessels.
I appreciate your work and hope to see more from you.
Hi Black Mamba. For some yacht buyers it is all about "living the dream". If your dream is to travel in to the arctic with your yacht, take off in your helicopter and be dropped in a remote spot where nobody has ever skied before, this is a pretty stylish way of doing it!
Am confused. Icon at the end was 84M, and 280 foot. Then came Ragnor: 63M and also 280 foot.
Price of Ragnar? Does it free for buying?
What was the yacht at 1:23? Icon Legend?
HAY EVERYONE, I SPEAK AND CERTIFY I CAN WALK ON ? WATER ? 🤓
Maybe you can answer this Question ??? Do any of the Yacht's you're seeking to sell will come fitted with Fire suppression system ?? And how many yachts have you sold in the past have such a system
Another Question .. In the era of piracy at sea .. why on earth are designers completely ignorant of such dangers .. that ships .. now face ?? If am spending my hard earned cash on such a vessel I would at least want a vessel that is difficult for pirates to sneak aboard from the stern ,, As a good number of vessels can easily be over run and taken control in under 6 mins ...
There is one UA-cam feature that is hated more than any other by the majority of UA-cam users, the Premieres feature. Why? Because the premiere, no mater what time you set it for, it will always be at a time that is inherently inconvenient for 5 out of 6 viewers.
UA-cam's intention, obviously, was to help stir up excitement for an upcoming video and create an opportunity for you to coordinate a viewing time with your viewers to watch it together and get live feed back from your viewers, but its an utter failure from the start. It makes about as much sense as a screen door on a submarine because your viewers are all over the world, scattered across 24 different time zones. For the majority of people, there is a narrow window of time that such an event would be continent to participate in, and that window is inherently inconvenient for everyone else. So no mater what time your select 5 out of 6 viewers won't be able to participate or will have to do so at a time that is not continent.
For example, this video will be premiering at midnight to 4 am for all of the western hemisphere.
Thanks for the feedback David...I doubt that I shall be using this feature again!
I don't know. I enjoy the videos and I managed to plan the end of my day around it to catch it within 3 minutes of the video's launch, so it worked for me. Obviously, the nature of UA-cam means I could watch it at any time, but for all intents and purposes the premier feature kind of worked. I got excited for the video and ended up being here 3 minutes early, instead of a day later.
I subscribe to many channels, never have seen it done before, to be honest , it doesn't matter either way
I enjoy this channel, knowing a video is coming is good for me but to each their own.
missing one element...
me as an owner
Talk about from the swan to the ugly duckling. You couldn't pay me to own Ragnar
It's not a bad looking yacht to me and when you go up to Antarctica and want to break ice with a yacht are you really going to care about what the yacht looks like? NO! There are not going too be any people in Antarctica so who cares what it really looks like.
I very much dislike the new PREMIERE feature... This topic was discussed on several large UA-cam channels several weeks ago and all have since agreed that they will no longer be using the Premiere feature for the time being... Following was my reply to one UA-camr regarding the use of the Premiere feature "I see no need for the use of the Premiere feature for your normal videos such as this, perhaps for a major event such as the delivery of your GT40 or Senna then yes a 24hr notice would be cool... it's getting to the point where I'll either start unsubing or turning off all notifications as I very much dislike these additional notifications and videos appearing in my subscription stream that cannot be watched. Also, videos uploaded using the Premiere feature do not register as "Watched" after they have been viewed which is extremely annoying... Love your content but please consider not using the Premiere feature for uploading your normal videos and perhaps just use it for special events as mentioned... Cheers mate..."
This is a link to a video just as an FYI regarding this very subject which you may find interesting (also the comments section with comments from many high profile creators are interesting)
ua-cam.com/video/Gz8UpKEhMQo/v-deo.html
BTW: Yes the word PREMIERE does appear in the thumbnail in place of the time showing the length of the video in the list of subscribers videos BUT it doesn't appear if your video shows up in the list of recommend videos for me to watch, then it shows the video length and I click on it assuming I can watch it but no, it can't be watched and goes to the Premiere page of the video, very annoying..!
Also keep in mind that subscribers live all over the world and I don't want notifications at some ungodly hour in the middle of the night that someone's video has just gone live...
Enjoy your content very much David but hopefully you will take on board this constructive criticism regarding the use of this Premiere feature... Cheers from Australia...
Thanks for your feedback Barry - it's not the first negative feedback I've heard about the Premiere feature...It's highly unlikely that I shall use it again, although I look forward to seeing if there is any engagement from viewers during the time that the chat feature is active.
Repurpose,,,,my hat is off to icon for this,,,,
As we humans are destroying our planet,,,,the resources needed to build a new yacht is removed by repurposing an older vessel......well done !!!!
I read your reply,,,,then went back to read my comment,,,,,I don't see anything I said in my comment about climate change,,,,,I stated,,,we humans will destroy this planet,,,,and yes,,,I have heard of the ice age,,,,or ice ages,,,,as there have been many since the birth of this planet....
