- That Tim Burton broke filmmaking traditions when it came to casting Gomez Addams for his new Netflix adaptation of The Addams Family? Typically, in Addams Family adaptations of years gone by, Gomes Addams, the father of Wednesday Addams, is portrayed as a handsome and dashing man. Previous actors who have occupied the role include, John Astin in the 1962 version, Raul Julia in the 1991 and 1995 movie adaptations, and Tim Curry in 1998’s The Addams Family Reunion. However, in the original New Yorker cartoon, Gomez Addams is portrayed as rather a portly individual. Director of Wednesday, Tim Burton, may have changed a few details from the story’s original cartoon for his most recent Netflix update, but he did stay true to the cartoon’s vision of Gomez. Burton cast Luiz Guzman in the role of Gomez and the actor has a lot more in common physically with the original cartoon than other actors who have previously played the role.

He is lol
Guzman was an excellent choice for Wednesday's dad. But on a scale from a 0 to supermodel 10, where do you place him in the looks department?

@@secretunknown253 Not only are you ugly on the inside, however you most definitely are on the outside as well if you seriously have to put others down just for your own personal pleasure.
Usually Gomez is probably the most expressive out of everyone. His passion for Mortisha is always stated out loud with absolutely no regret, and he's the probably also the most caring out of the family.
Agree he supposed to be very over the top slightly theatrical he’s also supposed to be very very agile even if he is chubbier or bigger in general I could give a less shit it’s just the amount of grace that he supposed to show in dramatic schism did not go along with itself it was weird it wasn’t the right way it felt slimy he’s not supposed to feel slimy it also felt too forced like he’s never supposed to feel forced he supposed to feel dramatic and enchanting regardless of how he might look like the aura around him off

Luis Guzman is a fantastic actor and deserves every compliment that comes his way.
hes actually adorable, im glad they went with him. The addams family is all about embracing being different and loving it!
i love luiz guzman and catherine zeta. imo they make such a perfect modern day tish and gomez, they’re both absolutely perfect in their roles and total sweethearts on set according to their fellow cast members 🫶
Okay, we can overlook their heritage is the macob and psychopathic murders they all are twistedly lovable to their own. It was a great spin on the happy and goody, goody family tropes, plus their old money. So they do what they want. Good series.

Yeah I agree the only thing I didn’t like is I just don’t like this actor I didn’t like how they wrote Gomez for this show
In every iteration of Gomez I'm simping for him
Yeah! I was quite pleased with the series because that’s how I would’ve pictured him
Nah they didn't. He wore a big 1920s mafioso style double breasted suit. He was never fat. He was muscular and he was as broad as lurch. And that was actually part of his character and a repeating theme, that Gomez was stronk af.
Anyone who says this never actually saw the strips imo. Gomez wasn't like this. This Gomez doesn't look like he has otherworldly strength. I'm not gonna be insulting to the guy but he makes Gomez look as though he got depressed and started binging.

Did you also know, the Original Wednesday Addams in the Addams Family 1 and 2, from the 1991 is Miss Thornhill / Laurel Gates in the Wednesday Series
Those previous live action adaptations also focused on making Gomez a good romantic/sensual partner for Morticia. Guzman's version focuses more on his relationship with Wednesday, and the more portly look makes him more fatherly. Same could be said for Zeta-Jones' Morticia; she's a lot softer and less vivacious because they're portraying a mother, not a lover. This is also when Wednesday is a teenagers, not a child so it makes sense that Burton went for a more aged look as opposed to how they've been portrayed when Wednesday was a child. Teen Gomez looks a lot more like past versions
The problem original stories always considered him almost toad like, he would appear like the greedy businessmen with pot bellies and well attire, but the break from that trope is he the most fatherly and positive form of that appearance.
I agree to this!
Nicely broken down
Don’t think those older adaptations were supposed to make gomez hot either by their beauty standards at the time, we just think Gomez was hot because he’s iconic. They’re supposed to still be the weird head of the weird family.

@@iamvanshgandhi I don't have any opinions on who was cast as Morticia. Sure, she does not have that iconic air about her in this series but then again the focus is going to mostly just be Wednesday. Also yea Raul Julia, he played Gomez in the 1991 movie. And unfortunately passed in 1994 from stomach cancer. Dude was an absolute legend though. From an up and coming actor to even when he was a Hollywood A Lister. He still appeared in PSAs and student films and stuff all the time for free. Mostly for a love of acting but also to lend some star power to up and coming directors.
He did a huge amount of humanitarian work and was a proud Puerto Rican who pushed for political and societal changes for Latin Americans in every aspect.
He did so much that when he passed, and in accordance with his last will and testament his body was sent back to Puerto Rico for burial.
The Puerto Rican government the gave him a state funeral.
He was an amazing man who's still remembered incredibly fondly there today. Dude was a hero. And he never took himself too seriously.
Like that street fighter movie is pretty terrible. And even sick, tired, and miserable in late stage cancer. You can still see him in big rubber muscles, absolutely hamming the part up. And bringing an amazing energy and fun to the role.
I like luis Guzman as an actor. And he even stated in interviews that he intentionally played his version of Gomez straight and not over the top so as to not take away from Raul's legacy with the character. He even took alot of inspiration from Raul's real life personality, as opposed to emulating his portrayal of the character as a homage.
Raul was a dedicated and loving father and husband, a caring man who'd help anyone, but apparently those who knew him personally, said his family was the single most important thing to the man, and the overriding factor to his every decision.
Frankly I see Luis's portrayal as a well thought out and respectful tribute. And a succession of such an iconic role being filled by Puerto Ricans.
