While anticipating my future JMT hike (I am in the lottery) I have watched many films by hikers. This video is by far the best. The trail is the protagonist, not the hiker/filmmaker. There is no whining, or boasting just the trail...well done, thank you, Tim.

Good luck with your plans! NOBO is pretty easy to get a permit, especially if you are somewhat flexible with your dates. You might also look into the High Sierra Trail which also visits Whitney- kind of a cousin to the JMT

Liked your video very much , reminds me when I was younger and able to backpack & flyfish, but alas this is the one place I would learn later in life that I wished I had known more about it, I would have loved to backpack the JMT. I can almost feel the morning coolness, the smell of the pines, and see the woodchucks & chipmonks scurrying along the rocks and trees. The smell of a small campfire in the evening and morning. If able, I could have spent my entire life backpacking such places as the JMT and the AT, and been completely happy living out of my backpack. May you have many more trips. Thanks for the video.

Hi WildernessBound. First of all, thank you for the kind words about the video. I'm happy it brings back good memories for you. We both know what a good dose of wilderness does for the spirits! I'm planning on having as many trips as fate allows, thank you! I took a two-week hike through the Wind River Range of Wyoming this past August and am in the process of making another film. It should be done by February. I think you may like it, if you liked this one. Blessings!

Tim, my wife and I must have just missed you last summer. We bailed at Kearsarge Pass on our south bound trip on August 25th. My wife was really bothered by the smoke and we had climbed Whitney a few years before coming out of Horseshoe Meadow. I looks like you had great trip. We enjoyed it so much we are going back this year. Thanks for such a great video. See you on the trail.

    • @TimSeymour
      @TimSeymour  8 років тому

+Michael Wellington Thanks for the kind words! I would have been at the Kearsage trail in the morning of the 25th, and if I remember correctly, it was pretty smokey that day, even in the morning. Yes, we may have passed each other that day. I do have some footage of a couple of hikers coming down the south side of Glen Pass around 9:30am. It's pretty shaky and from a distance, but could have been you! That was probably my toughest climb of the trail. Hope the air is clean for you this year. All the best!

Thanks! Yes, John and Ted were very approachable! (I can tell who watches all the way to the end ;-) Practicing the Leave No Trace principles is the least we can do to honor their foresight, huh?
Going NOBO gets the hard part done first, but I think having Whitney at the end would be a great way to end the journey (though Clouds Rest was pretty sweet). I watched your JMT video with you and your daughter and thoroughly enjoyed it. What a special memory that must be for both of you! All the best to you.

+Sandyeggo Blue That's so kind, thank you! I think ending at Whitney would be a more fitting end-of-hike reward, but I think you will like NOBO as well. I had never been to Yosemite, so it was a bit of culture shock to end in such a non-wilderness setting. And, yes, Teddy and John were very cooperative in letting me in on their hero shot! Great video, Tim....and congratulations on a terrific hike. I've spent considerable time in the Sierra and it's beauty never ceases to amaze. I look forward to completing the JMT in the near future. Thanks again for a great video....and best wishes!

Beautiful voice. Fantastic photography. So refreshing to watch a video without being overwhelmed by talking head. This portion of the Sierra is what most of us like to see. Thank you.

MISTER Seymour.... I have been trying to get at SOBO out of Yosemite on this trail for the last 3 years..... and shut down every time.. so this year I put in for a NOBO out of Cottonwood and GOT IT. I have watched so many JMT videos I CANNOT believe I have not seen yours before. I can only think of the saying "Save the best for last". Your choice of music, the awesome use of Google Earth, excellent, EXCELLENT photography and great narration blow all other videos away. While watching this, I constantly was thinking to myself "YEAH! That's one of the spots I plan to stay!!!!" so now I have a great idea of what to expect on my trip.... I hope you still get notifications about people seeing this so I can say THANK YOU for sharing it!!! I plan on making up a website for fun to show my trip when I am done and would like to know if I can put up a link to this video so others can see it.... they should! I only hope that the current situation with the virus debacle clears enough for me to make the trip as I don't know how much longer I can do it.... I'm a spry old man at 70, but I want to get it done this year.... A tip of the hat to you Tim.... you made an old man smile tonight.

Hi Dave. You've made my day with such a thoughtful post, and, of course, please share the link to others you think would appreciate it. I, too, have plans to be on the JMT this summer. I'm taking my wife and 3 of her friends on the northernmost section from Mammoth to Yosemite if the virus situation will allow-we start on 12AUG from Agnew Meadows. We are not planning on too many miles per day (lots of rose smelling), so if your itinerary coincides with ours, maybe you will pass us as you finish with your strong trail legs! Stay safe and all the best of luck to you, I sincerely hope your boots tread that Sierra dust and granite!!! Feel free to comment with any planning questions...

@@TimSeymour Hey Tim, if you hear anything about Reds Meadow or VVR letting people know if/when they will be open this year, please let me know..... at my age, I am praying I can do my NOBO on the JMT this year after so many rejections in the past. Thanks!!!!

@@rmoran113 I'm doing this for the second time in 43 years.... I first did it in 1977. There was NOBODY out there then. We could go 2 DAYS without meeting someone. It was awesome. If I am able to make my trip this year, I'll fling a invite to you so you can see if I survived : )

Tim, love your video! I'm sure it was a lot of work to put together, Thank you! It helped convince my buddy and I to go NOBO and start at Cottonwood Pass Trailhead. Applied this morning 3/12/21 for 9/12/21 - no problem! There have been several permits available into the late morning all week. I'm sure I'll watch several more times before I go and will send to friends & family that want to know why I'm off the grid this fall.

Thank you, Keith. You will be starting a day after I finished my hike. Nights will probably be cold, but traffic on the trail should be light. Also, bugs will most likely be non-existent. I can't remember when MTR and VVR close, but hopefully they will still be open when you resupply... Have an EPIC hike!!!

I was fortunate to do the same NOBO JMT with a friend in 2019 in 14 days (20 mile/day avg). The scenery blew mi mind and I keep looking for videos like yours to re live the adventure. The only thing I regret is not hiking to clouds rest at the end. I hope to hike it again one day but sólo like you. Cheers!

Tim, what a wonderful video! I really, really enjoyed it. I've probably watched two dozen or more videos from folks trekking the JMT, and this was one of the best and most enjoyable. I am hoping to do the JMT soon, and am considering a South to North hike as well. Your video will be enormously helpful for planning. Thanks and many blessings!

Great job with the video Tim, we did the exact same route NOBO from Horseshoe Meadow over Cottonwood Pass then to Crabtree Meadow and on to Mt Whitney to begin our JMT hike north. We began July 13, 2021 and ended July 30, 2021 at Happy Isle. My 61 year old body was quite tired by the time we got near Clouds Rest and we just kept going. This is my one regret of our hike especially when viewing videos such as yours. Happy trails from Virginia!

    Hey Tim,
I’ve watched many JMT videos and yours is by far my favorite. Listening to your voice as you are overcome by the beauty of clouds rest is unmistakable and my favorite part of the video. With that said, I am inspired to attempt it. I have a novice experience level but the planning is intimidating. Although I am relatively young, my body is beginning to fail me so, time is of the essence. Thank you again for the inspiration. ✌️

Wow I believe if our itineraries were just a few days differently we would have crossed paths around Tuolumne Meadows and the cathedral lakes. Great video thats got me wishing I was dealing with smoke all over again. Some of those helicopters were actually filling buckets over at May Lake and made for quite the morning wake up.

Yes, it was quite a different experience than this year, I guess. I think my feet may have got wet maybe once (and I probably could have avoided even that). It was a bit disconcerting to have such an aerial assault so close by. Guess I'll have to go back and try SOBO with clean air!
