Both Roland and Curt have no problem admitting their Beatles influence.
Another great song from this album is “Advice for the young at heart”.
Their new album “The Tipping point” is so good!

Yes, I'm addicted to their new album! I saw Roland Orzabel in concert in NYC in the 90s when they were broken up. He was awesome, but I'm so glad they're back together and making great new music. Love "Rivers of Mercy" and "Long Long Time" on their new album.

One of my favorite bands of all time! The Beatles homage is obvious and well done. The trumpet (or French horn?) is straight up Penny Lane vibes. Badman's Song from this album and The Working Hour from their Big Chair albums are their 2 best songs imo and more than reaction worthy. Either one being next would be great!

Definitely check out “Advice for the Young at Heart” from the same album. As well as “Mother’s Talk” from their second. I’m more of a hard rock and metal guy, but Tears for Fears has ALWAYS been an exception! One of my all time favorites!

They said that during their “Big Chair” tour of America, they were actually introduced to a lot of music including, the Beach Boys, Gospel, and strange enough, the Beatles. This influenced their style for this album.

It’s so on the nose with the Beatles tropes, absolutely right. Answering the question of how many Beatles elements can you fit into one song. I thought the first album seemed to be a bit more original. It’s interesting to note that early Tears For Fears was almost prog with a lot of odd time signatures and complicated phrasing and I do think the guitarist is really talented. Thanks again guys!

Aww man, i absolutely love Tears for Fears. This must have been the first song of theirs I ever heard as a kid.
This album and the pre-decessor 'Songs from the Big Chair' are 80s pop classics you can play from start to end without regretting a single note.
Have some great extra time with your extra family!

Interesting that at the end of the 80s they were singing "an end to the politics of greed"...which defined the '80s, pretty much.
This was such a rare taste of groovy at the time. Thanks for bringing it back. "Light and Day" by the Polyphonic Spree has a similarly positive chakric vibration, more akin to your own high vibration.

Jim Seals of Seals & Crofts died the other day. They had some great songs in the 70's. I had the good fortune to see them in 90's for a reunion tour at the Valley Forge Music Fair. You'd like some of their music. ''Summer Breeze' #nicknlexrequest & 'Humming Bird' would be great to react to.

I literally thought my friend was kidding when he recommended this album, but it's become one of my favorites. There are some real pros like Pino Palladino (bass) and Manu Katche (drums) on some of the songs but nobody's showing off, just accentuating the excellent songwriting (ala Sting's bands over the years). Just a tasty album overall.

Thanks for more Tears For Fears. I play them all the time. Their new album is great, I'd suggest checking out the title cut, The Tipping Point, a great song. The title cut of the album, Raoul and the Kings of Spain is incredible as is the title cut of the album, Elemental. Other songs to check out: Break It Down Again, Goodnight Song, God's Mistake, Secrets, Mr. Pessimist, Badman's Song, Sketches of Pain.... there's so many. Great reaction y'all!

About "Hotel California" - The line "They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast. " was an answer to the line in the Steely Dan song "Everything You Did" which goes "Turn up The Eagles, the neighbors are listening ". This implied that the pleasant sounding Eagles music would cover up the argument that was going on. Evidently Becker's girlfriend liked the Eagles.

Tears For Fears have been my favourite band since I first heard Mad World in 1982, I've been waiting for you to review another of their songs, your Woman In Chains review was awesome, I loved seeing how it almost brought you to tears. Their is a track on Seeds Of Love called Badman's Song, I'd love to watch both your faces if you review that, they take you to church on that one, and Oleta Adams shares vocals on it. I don't know if you are aware, TFF are a duo, both guys sing lead vocal, Roland who sings the two songs you have reviewed sings most, but Curt takes lead on songs like Mad World and Everybody Wants To Rule The World. I'd love you to review a Curt vocal, such as Advice For The Young At Heart, or Long Long Long Time which is my favourite track from their recently released new album The Tipping Point, it's a song that takes a couple of listens for it to grow, I'd also love to see you review the title track of the new album which both Roland and Curt sing together. The Tipping Point was written about the death of Roland's wife in 2017. Keep up the good work, you two are brilliant.

The Lyrics are so good! I'm surprised you didn't mention them?
I spy tears in their eyes
They look to the skies for some kind of divine intervention
    Food goes to waste
So nice to eat, so nice to taste
Politician granny with your high ideals (reference to Margret Thatcher)

this is definitely a Beatles sounding song and the cover is their Sgt. Pepper. The trumpet echoes the one in Penny Lane, the tumbling drums are something Ringo would play, and the lyrics express the spirit of the 1960's in a sincere and very musical way. I grew up in the 60s-70s, and this song moves me every time I hear it. This whole album is their masterpiece. You should listen to Year Of The Knife. The 90s Sgt. Pepper , such a great album. I was working at a Record Store in Vienna when this was released and after the first time listening to it i was like 'Meeh' , then i listened to it again a bit later the same day and it was like a positive punch into the face - to this day still on my Desert Island Discs Top 10 ;)

I bought this album when it was released and I bought the September 1989 edition of Q magazine that had an interview with Roland Orzabal. He said he was trying to capture the essence of the Beatles. Many of the sounds on this album were produced with the Korg M1 hich was the keybaord to have at the time. It also had the story of how he and Kurt met Oleta Adams when they walked into a piano bar where she was playing one evening. They were so impresed that they asked her if she wanted to sing on their upcoming album. This song's lyrics make references to British politics at the time refering to Margaret Thatcher. The line "Kick out the tyle, bring back the Jam" is refering to Paul Weller's bands The Jam and The style Council whereby the earlier The Jam had a rough edgy sound and the Style Council had mellowed and reflected the changes that were happening in Britain thoughout the 80s.

For me it's the solo and the breakdown at the end of it in Domination by Pantera that always makes me come back to that song.

One of the most complex pop songs ever, there's so much going on. Check out 'The Working Hour', you'll love it. The saxophone on that song is just amazing. It was never a single, but it's become a fan favourite.

Hi guys, yes they got a lot of radio air play with their singles and appearances on Top Of The Pops here in England during the 80's. Only a few weeks ago they appeared on an early news programme called "Breakfast Tv" announcing their return with a new album plus tour after many years apart. It's good to hear this again. The Beatles Homage is intentional. This is such a good track ... love the nod to 'I am the Walrus' & 'Penny Lane'. Great reaction thankyou. Byeee ! Jim X ... By the way there are two vocalists always singing together or adding harmonies for each other.

Roland has the voice of an angel, and can sing for any Opera in America. "Woman in Chains" should be next. Too many others to mention. I have seen them Live a couple times and they are SO good.

The Beatles homage was definitely intentional here. They draw from a lot of their songs, but at the same time do something very different by mixing them all together and putting their own slant on it. This song is a journey of different movements. If you aren't familiar with stuff from their first album, The Hurting, that's where you should go next. And as far as the 80's being about synth, it was definitely what a lot of people were experimenting with for the first time, but the thing I loved about the 80's is New Wave and then Alt rock could be anything from guitar rock to synth to World Music. One of favorites from the 80's was Juluka, a South African band and their albums Scatterlings and Stand Your Ground. The hit was Scatterlings From Africa. If you want to check out an 80's tune that will really surprise you, try that one.

Tears For Fears two biggest hits in the "80's were "Shout" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World". But they have a lot of great songs that got less airplay.
