Tbh if they brought books either they love reading or they haven't been home. Year 4's is pretty young (8 to 9 year olds) and given they're not allowed in yet and the mum left, the teachers are somewhat responsible for them so they have to do something with them. You aren't really supposed to let kids roam around solo. (Depending on the area, i grew up where i was allowed to walk around the village streets from probably 6 or 7 years old, maybe younger if out with older kids from the village) It's like a grey area, they're on school grounds but technically not meant to be there yet, so the teachers aren't responsible for them, the parent is. But the kids are still on school grounds with teachers present for a school event. If anything happens to them who's responsible? The parent? But the teachers saw and acknowledged the kids so then the teachers? But they were dropped off early. Grey area. Only so much a teacher can do. It's frustrating for teachers as they're supposed to be chaperoning the event not keeping an eye on kids who aren't supposed to be there yet, frustrating for the parents as they obviously couldn't find someone else to drop them off (especially given it's a small group so that usually means multiple parents chatted amongst themselves and came up with best solution) and of course frustrating for the kids if they don't want to read.
Sorry bit of a ramble but I'm just fleshing out the story with empathy for all sides. It's easy to say parents should just drop off early and kids should be allowed in early but there could be good reason for not making an exception for the kids to party 🤷♂️ The teachers are also giving up their evening too.
I always went to dances and school party’s with my friend and her mom was a like helper person for the school. The teachers would always let us try out food and games and it’s was awesome.
In prep we had a Lilly, Milly and Tilly, they all moved away though but a picture of those three was on the newsletter in grade 6 and it was like a memory had been unlocked for our whole class simultaneously. Then we just laughed at our other prep photos they had used on the cover
I once went to a Christmas event early to see if I could help set up because my parents were arguing then I was shouted at to leave (because it would ruin the magic of Christmas, even tho I was old enough to know the secrets of Christmas)
I always got to go to the discos early cuz my mum worked for the school and helped out at the discos so I just hid in the back with my mates and ate all the sweets
I'd be getting a 0 on that assignment, screw that noise. To any person reading this who is in school. School is important, but so is life. Have a good time while you can, you have the rest of your life to work and be a people pleaser.

We didn't do this. The teachers have us an iPad each and told us to sit under the food tables so they didn't get in trouble from the head teacher 😂😂😂.
