- "Chats with Guitar Cats" Episode #1
I surprise studio legend Louie Shelton as we recall his younger years by pulling out a guitar like the one that started it all for him as Little Junior Shelton back in Little Rock Arkansas - a genuine vintage 1952 Fender Telecaster.
Like, subscribe and leave a comment if you would like Louie to do a UA-cam Live Chit Chat with me so you can ask him questions in the live chat room.

Loop P
Louie was/is a prodigy, cool gracious man.
... having an original 1952 Fender Telecaster, or even an exact copy re-issue, "IS" my wildest dream guitar. NOT ONLY BECAUSE I WAS BORN IN THAT YEAR, but & because, Leo Fender was THEE STRATARARIUS MASTER LUTIER INSTUMEÑT MAKER of the 20th century, if not, the modern era ...
I think I know who might have Lou's guitar. Tell him to get his manager to get ahold of G.E. Smith He was on the early saturday night live band. He has a double cutaway just like he describes.
Is that ( G.E. Smiths double cut)not regarded as being the Bob Dylan tele, from the famous 66 tour?
No flashy effects, no one trick pony - just world class proper musicianship

Yep, plug the guitar into the amp and let's go!
Mr Shelton is a genuine guitar player and sounds so humble for his past en devours

Yummy.
I know, right. You'd think he was just some living room guitarist or something. Complete humility.

But he's not the humbler
What a fantastic player Shelton is. This whole interview surprised me of how actually good he is, he went from rockabilly, country to Segovia and Bach. Fender should make his own signature
Tele 52' is an understatement. There is a reason why all of these known musicians hired him.
Right! C’mon Fender! Step up! It’s the right thing to do!
Louie Shelton, what an amazing guitar player....and a mild mannered gentleman. Loved listening to his stories, thank you
Louie obviously still loves to just play guitar. It's a pleasure listening to him tell old stories and talk/play guitar. Still looks pretty good for 80 too. God bless him.
80??! Nooo waaaay! He looks no older than when he was 50!
Turns 79 tomorrow.

How could there be any thumbs down ,this is the one of the finest melodic guitar players in history! Awesome interview too, just a great inspiring 40 minutes!!..thanks
Louie Shelton and Tommy Tedesco and Larry Carlton are my favorite Guitarist of all time grew up listening and emulating Louie's riffs on guitar and never knew it until the internet I wished I had him as my guitar teacher growing up thanks Louie.
Love Roy Buchanan and his Telecaster blues great guitar player
I played a show where Louie was filling in for our guitarist. I didn't get as chance to speak to him and I wasn't told his name. From the first tune I knew he was world class. In the set break I spoke to him and when he introduced himself I nearly fell over. I knew of him instantly. I was only 24 at the time

Fascinating , what a true treasure . Louie is so humble and soooo talented . The amount of input he has had on the soundtrack of our lives is incredible . Listening to him and his stories is the kind of history lessons I love ! Thank You !!!
Louie, fascinating video...your just a National treasure. Guitarists across the land like myself have come to respect and emulate the founding "fathers" of America's music. James Burton, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, Chet Atkins, Louie Shelton. You guys are on MT Olympus for a reason. Its your gift you've given to all the rest of us, your incredible God given talent. Enjoy the view Louie you've earned it
Incredible! You can actually see his eyes light up like he's seeing an old friend when he gets a hold of the original 52. I got a little misty. After hearing the first strum. Just wonderful!
Man I just love it when I stumble across a gem like this on youtube. I was one of the millions of teens that started playing electric guitars in the mid 60's, inspired by guitar playing like Mr. Shelton's on so many songs of that era. It's a gift he gave me and I still enjoy to this day very much. Especially now, when we are under stay-at-home orders. If it weren't for guitar playing I'd probably go nuts. Sincere gratitude to you Mr. Shelton. You did a really good job with this Rick, especially considering it was the first interview you did and an impromptu get-together. I was spellbound the entire video. Thanks to you as well, take care. I'll be watching for the next time you get together with Mr. Shelton.
I agree. Thank God for the guitar. Especially now.

Such a talent. You can tell he just loves playing. Just a tele into a delux is such an amazing sound. 67 year old gear and sounds better than most stuff built now.
Not in my case my tele mij and sound better than a few vintages somewhere out there but yeah I agree depends
Just found your channel. I have known about Louie since I was twelve. I am now 64. Have acknowledged him through out the years as my inspiration. I probably know more about him than any single guitar player. I always looked at the person behind the star. Because, let's face it, It's people like Louie than made the stars. Thanks
Hi Rick. It was fantastic to meet you today at Gold Coast music. I am totally knocked out that you know and hang out with Louie Shelton.... what a legend! I have loved his playing for years and I've always admired the many styles and artists he has applied himself to. I am on the lookout for any gigs that Louie is doing around town as I've missed a few that I didn't know he was doing or I was playing a gig myself at the time. You are so right my friend!👍
For me the simplicity of the Tele is the beauty of it! It’s the last guitar I bought and it’s the one I play the most, and I have 7 electrics.
His most memorable playing for me was on the Monkey's tune "Valerie." Aside from Jimmy Bryant I had never heard anybody play that fast, clean, and melodic all at once back then.
Louie Shelton leaves all others standing choking in his dust- but he's just a down-to-earth guy.

Love this guys Louie Shelton. I especially enjoy playing his iconic parts on Last Train to Clarksville! He is the "music behind the music".
Louie is a man filled with beautiful music. What a gem.
I have a 1952 Tele. The newer ones - even late 50s, don't compare. There's one reason why they are SO valuable. They are not so thin and spiky, although they are still like a Tele. They have wooden warmth, kind of a sweetness - as you can hear here. They tend to be lighter (not much paint or lacquer at all) and easier to play than many later ones.
The material this man has put out and the depth of guitar knowledge is amazing and so humble !!
My first Louie moment was the fierce Spanish flavored soloing on the Monkees' "Valleri". Not a huge fan of the song itself, but that guitar work was jaw-dropping. Nobody was doing that for late 60s pop-rock.

Last count Keith has 12 52's. I bet if Keith knew Louie wanted a 52 Keith would give him one of his. Lord knows he deserves it
@@steveb9325 you know that's great & all, I'm all for capitalism & free market & more power to Keith he's certainly earned it & able to spend his money how he pleases but there is a little something off putting about people collecting or hoarding a majority of vintage instruments & artifically driving up supply & demand even more than it should be.
@@MrMd5555 we're talking Keith Richards brother. A rock guitarist icon that does this for a living. I've got nothing to do with it. I'm thankful for the guitars I have. They're paint brushes for me. I'm a musician.

I love how when Louie was asked how he played lead guitar and then explained that it was often based on playing within the relative positions of various chord voicings and was less a conscious exercise of music theory and more a mysterious gift that emanated between his heart and his head. I am nowhere in his league as a musician but I totally relate to that mysterious playing by feel and subconscious influences approach.

@@RickHollis Louie has the same temperament as fellow Wrecking Crew guitarist Barney Kessel who was from Oklahoma. Hal Blaine would tell me many stories about his studio days, and when he was the contractor for a session, he always told the newcomers, "If you smile, you're around for a while, if you pout, you out!" And before a session would start, he'd tell a few jokes to break any tensions in the room.
@@massF1 That's the way. Being a good guy will get you the gigs over the guy who is a gun but not easy to work with.
Great to see you remember that Louie played for Joe and Eddie, not many people remember or were aware of the years he spent with them before Joe Gilbert's untimely death in August 1966..I met Louie way back in 1964 at a Joe and Eddie gig when I was 13 years old and saw him last year at the Baked Potato in LA...classy and talented gentleman...

Man what a great tone and sound Louie Shelton has in his fingers with this amzing sounding Tellie 52 and the Fender Deluxe. And this 2 guys are very sympetic i must say. I love Tellies! The "honest" guitar I know. Which everyone a lucky day _ greets Udo
