it’s been a decade since people really commented on this, but if anyone ever reads this: I watched this movie for an English graduate course in narrative theory and this film in terms of structure and content just blew my mind. It is beautiful and so are many of Nolan’s other films. What really gets to me though is that brief section at the end when Jimmy asks “What do you want from me?” And Leonard’s response: “I want my fucking life back,” just gives me chills thinking about his condition and how metaphorically those who assaulted his wife really did strip him of the life he wanted so desperately to live. I wrote a paper on this film and my central concern was: how much memory and how much forgetting is necessary for a “normal” or functional experience? 10/10, fascinating film.
It’s an extremely good movie. Im a movie buff (hobby) and only the real good movies or concepts stick. It’s hard to impress me. I watched Memento and 30 minutes later watched it again. The next day I watched it 3 times. A couple weeks later I watched it for a 6th time and yup it’s still really that good
The great acting, compelling script, incredible scene by scene direction. How about the dark comedy of it all? How many movies leave you wondering who the villans really were? There is philosophy about perception and how we choose to live our lives ignoring things that don't mesh into our chosen world view. Even goes so far to suggest a dark purpose is better than a lost one.
5:44 - 5:55 is my favorite scene of the movie. that moment when you realize.."holy shit, the stories converge, this is the start of everything in color." and what a perfect way to do it, to have the picture develope into color. brillant, Mr. Nolan, brilliant.
I dont think Jimmy said "sammy". I think that theres a chance that Lenny's mind knows whats hapoening deep down and this was his subconscious giving him a clue. We don't know if Lenny can ever get his memory back. But we do know he actively manipulates himself so he can't even try to remember.
i just got finished with the movie, and up to this point i thought that the black and white sequences took place some time after the colored ones. well got really surprised there along with the twist :)
yes for sure. if you haven't already, check out The Prestige. I think Nolan should make a movie with Daniel Day-Lewis... amazing actor with an amazing director
Poor Jimmy, he didn’t have a thing to do with Lenny’s wife but got swindled by Teddy. In a way it was Karma how Natalie used Leonard to extract revenge.
Great movie only issue is some inconsistencies in his memory....So Lenny can drive off to some place....seems like he forget where he was driving quite easy. But I remember seeing this movie twice in the theater I was blown away.
@Roguemember this is up to you to infer. To me, Lenny has found out that Teddy has been tracking him for years and he knew that Teddy is using him. Thus, he told himself not to answer the phone. That's my point of view.
@lolyengz Yeah but when lenny discovered his tattoo stating "Never Answer the Phone", he then asked who was on the phone and the person hung up on him. Was that Teddy? Why did he hang up on Lenny?
@@kiwiberry8925 he means how a dead guy would have the ability to whisper anything. You don't actually see Jimmy whisper anything so it's probably just part of Lenny's mind
I really don't know, I think it is never explained in the movie, but it helps the theory that Leonard Shelby's real name is really Sammy Jankis, I'm not sure, this film needs a deep analysis to understand it well
@@baconbitz7937 No, Sammy was some random conman that Lenny exposed during his job as an insurance investigator. But Lenny got the details of Sammy's case confused with his own memories of killing his wife with insulin. Sammy was a real person but as Teddy said, he didn't have a wife. It was Lenny's wife who died of insulin overdose.
The only question I have is the same as Leonard, how Jimmy knew about Sammy Jankis? The guess I have is that Leonard and Jimmy somehow encountered each other through Teddy and Leonard told him about Sammy.
Ive always wondered in the beginning, the woman he sees for information, i think its quite possible that its is wife, when he closes his eyes to remember her his vision of her is strikingly close to her the woman sittin in front of him. Its possible that his image of her is slightly skewed. With her deep interest on his lost memory and how she wants him to speak of her makes me think this
imagine your only connection to reality and the the things of importance in your life is from a polaroid. such a amazing film
not just a polaroid but a polaroid that someone fools you into taking

Great comment bro I love this film ever since I first watched it
this is my favorite movie of all time, most movies I watch don't usually get a second thought. but this one, stuck with me for some reason!

No doubt. We all do it. But do we really confront ourself about the lies we tell ourselves? Most of us don’t even know we tell ourselves lies in life
the moment when it transitions from black and white to color is one of the coolest moments in a movie

What a wonderful movie.
My favourite movie of all time.
Forgot Mark Boone Junior was in this. Nolan brought him back for Batman Begins.

I agree, Jimmy was dead when he supposedly said 'Sammy' which otherwise wouldn't make sense
that kept me thinking of it a lot, because I've seen this movie several times and I only realized that Jimmy whispers "Sammy" the last time I saw it
5:45-5:50 ......End of Color-BW sequence of the movie
I've seen it multiple times and it never gets old even though I do know the plot.

yes the b&w scenes happened before the color, and the scenes converge when the picture developes
A good movie by Christopher Nolan

I didn't notice the shift from black and white to color, I didn't realize there was a change until I read about it after the movie was over

there is more to this movie than that.
Memory loss patient is more intelligent than physically and mentally fit cop
He say Big Teddy. So that Cop is a big Player in the Drug Community.Nathalie knows him too.
4:12 🤣
Was Teddy the one talking to Lenny on the phone the whole time?
Yes
yes u t right.
How did Lenny discover Teddy was lying to him? Why would teddy even need Lenin to do stuff like this when he could have just done it himself?
Ugh
because he does not get involved in the crime and get all the cash
Because Lenny is untraceable to the murders. That’s why Teddy is using him as a hit man
Lenny is a walking hunter killer that doesn’t even need money for his services because he won’t remember the money or the killing
I never understood the part where the dead guy whispers Sammy.
It means lenard is sammy

where's part 2?
How could Jimmy say "Sammy", he was dead right? Was it Lenny's imagination?
Flup2 Sammy is Lennys real name I think

Tan suit and blue shirt? stylish :) - I'd take them

He calls himself "Sammy " sometimes in his mind.
I think Sammy is his real name. Sammy is just a person he made up in his mind to forget the horrible things that he (Leonard) did
