Definitely check out Kiss from a Rose, their latest release. It's completely insane. Matt, the bass, is the newest member, but he has been in the band since 2017, so he doesn't really qualify as new at this point. He replaced Avi. Left to right, Matt, Kirstin, Scott, Mitch, and Kevin. All but Matt are original members. Great reaction!

Great breakdown. If you plan to react to more Pentatonix, I'm here for it. They have a new album out. It is a "greatest holiday hits" album, but the last 8 songs are new releases. My faves are "Please, Santa, Please", "Kiss From a Rose" (I know...a Christmas song? It had the word "snows" in it, and that qualified it to be a Christmas song to them), and "O Holy NIght", which is an upgrade of an upgrade. They sang this years ago, but the new version is EPIC. I just subbed.

Great reaction. You might like their versions of Oh Come All Ye Faithful, The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Mad World, Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk, Carol Of The Bells, Problem, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Little Drummer Boy. Originals like Sing, Love Again, Water, Can’t Sleep Love, Coffee in Bed, Please Santa Please, Be My Eyes and Happy Now are fantastic.
Their most recent amazing cover is Kiss of the Rose. I love the VEVO live version as I don’t believe they have released an official studio version video. They are all talented beyond belief.

subbed for more PTX - since we're getting close to Christmas, recommend anything from their Christmas repertoire, but specifically their latest 2 Christmas albums. The one last year, Holidays Around the World was just nominated for their 5th Grammy (they've won 3 to date) and as other have said, the 8 new tracks on this year's album are FIRE!

PTX is definitely the best a capella group out there. Matt Sallee, in the white jacket, is their bass and has been since he replaced Avi Kaplan in 2017. Kevin Olusola is their beatboxer, cellist and tenor. Yes, he sings , doing backing vocals but only when not actively beatboxing. He does occasionally get his "moment" to shine in a few of their songs.
I subb'd some time ago to your channel in the hope that you'd do more PTX and I'm glad to see you finally did feature them again. Their very latest rendition of Seal's Kiss From A Rose is just insane!! You really do need to react to it. The VEVO live version is the best . Also Please Santa Please is a new original of theirs written by Kirstie and Kevin and two other songwriters. All their songs from last year's album ( now up for a Grammy...their 5th nomination) are fire and deserve a reaction.

Kevin the Beatboxer has been with them since they competed on "The Sing-Off " in 2011.
There was only one member change... the tall black guy. The original Bass Avi left the band in 2017? For personal reasons and is now a solo artist.
Before someone quotes my words about my thoughts on the 3 versions you mentioned... heres my analysis:
Simon and Garfunkels version is a Warning/wake up... Disturbed's version is the anger we, who heeded the original message, feel these days. Now Pentatonixs version is the growing hope that we are feeling now that people are waking to the truth of the message of the song.

This IS an awesome arrangement and they are perfect in this version! If you liked this, one of their newest, "Kiss From a Rose" (yes, a cover of Seal) is now out - and it's a LIVE performance - as I'm sure you've been told, all their songs sound identical LIVE in concert - I've been to both their Xmas concert & "regular" summer concert - and every song sound LIVE like it did in the studio version. No auto-tune going on here!

This is a great version of the song.
Actually, I love the tune, and have several versions of it in different playlists, including the reconstructed original (El condor pasa, by peruvian composer Daniel Alomia Robles in early XX century), and other instrumental "folk" versions done with Andean instruments.

The tall blond guy is Scott Hoying-Baritone; the girl is Kirstin Maldonado, Mezzo-Soprano; the guy with the hat is Mitch Grassi, Counter-Tenor; the guy in the white jacket is Matt Sallee, Basso-Profundo; and the Beatboxer is Kevin Olusola, Tenor/Cellist/Cellist-Beatboxer. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch met in a high school in Arlington, TX (between Dallas and Ft. Worth, TX). After graduation they all went to different colleges and majored in music. They got back together to enter a TV singing competition call "Sing-Off." They required 5-person groups, so Keving and Matt came on by referrals. Listen to their version of "Hallelujah."

Saw Pentatonix on August08/2023 in Toronto and they were absolutely amazing. Each one of them had their own song and shared time with audiences. We had 3rd floors and we did not go home unimpressed. They were amazing and I’d do it again if they came back. I truly believe that they were shocked at how many people were there. Every one was singing the songs with them and they couldn’t hide their emotions on that. Toronto loves Pentatonix.

The members of Pentatonix, in this song:
    • First verse, tall blond guy: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott's range extends from about midway through a normal bass range to a fairly high tenor, probably about 5 or 6 octaves. When the bass solos Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line.
    • Second verse, dark haired guy next to Scott: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves, but he's most comfortable in his higher registers. He switches between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice seamlessly, and is known for his ethereal high solos. Everyone in Pentatonix says he has the best voice of any of them.
    • Third verse, black guy in a white jacket on the far left: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. It's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a live stream of "Hallelujah" from their most recent world tour, though you may want to watch their official video of "Hallelujah" first so you can hear what it sounded like with their original bass, Avi Kaplan, who left Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons. You can find the recording with Matt here: ua-cam.com/video/FqphhPapkoc/v-deo.htmlsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away. His lowest notes don't blow out speakers the way Avi's have done (though they may within a year or two), but on the high end he's very close to the top of a normal tenor range.
    • Fourth verse, the only woman in Pentatonix: Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, alto and soprano. Kirstin sings anywhere from a low alto (though not contralto, which is the female equivalent of baritone) through coloratura soprano, the highest female range. And she has whistle notes on top of that which are off the charts. Lately Pentatonix has begun referring to her as an "alto soprano."
    • The fifth member of Pentatonix is the black guy on the right: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place.
Matt joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it), after their original bass left the group for personal reasons in 2017. Which brings us to the one member of Pentatonix who doesn't appear in this video:
    • Bearded white guy who usually wore a beanie or stocking cap: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo - his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances - but his range extends upward to about the middle of the tenor range. Since leaving Pentatonix Avi has gone on to have an extremely successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his UA-cam channel, which you can find here: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
The appearance of Mitch and Kirstin tends to vary greatly from one video to another, so people will frequently think they see someone new in Pentatonix when it's really Kirstin or Mitch. With these two, go by their voices, not their appearance; their voices don't lie. To be clear: Avi is the ONLY member who's left Pentatonix and Matt is the ONLY member who joined later.
Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin are childhood friends from Arlington, Texas, and in high school they formed a trio which they unimaginatively named "The Trio." They performed frequently at school functions and occasionally on local television. For this reason, pentaholics (Pentatonix fans) still refer to them as "the trio," and the trio is the heart of Pentatonix.

Check out "love again", "dance of the sugar plum fairy" (grammy win), "can't hold us" to hear contratenor sing. That's mitch, the little guy with the mullet here. He's actually able to sing higher than all the other members, including the girl, kirsty. And no falsetto. That's his natural range as a counter tenor. He's my favorite member. Love them all, but he's my favorite with the biggest range and even other members say is best singer. This song doesn't showcase his range as much. Also his side group with scott, the blond baritone/relief bass is called Superfruit. They did "wicked" as one of my favorites and "Rise" a tribute to club Pulse victims in trans community. Oh ptx "imagine" must watch!!

Ok so left to right, Matt 'new' bass but since 2017 so he has been in PTX for six years as was his predecessor, Avi so he's not very new. Matt is a very versatile bass because he can also sing very high when needed. He does not sing as low as Avi did (Avi was an opera-trained Basso Profundo) but he has a lovely warm tone and fits really well into the group. All the other members, including the beatboxer and cellist, Kevin have been in the group since they formed in 2011 to compete (and win) the third season of the a capella competition 'The Sing Off'.
The very tall blonde baritone is Scott. He has unbelievable range. He takes over the bass line from Matt (and Avi before him) when they sing solos but he can also go extremely high in his falsetto. He has a six-octave range.
Mitch, smaller, dark-haired is a counter tenor and can sing as high as Kirstie who is a mezzo soprano. He also has an insane range (as they all do!). He has the most beautiful tone and a once-in-a-generation voice. I know people often say Dimash is the best singer in the world and with his vocal gymnastics he is phenomenal technically but his voice doesn't move me the way Mitch's does.
Kevin is a music maestro. He can sing even higher than Mitch and plays the piano, cello and saxophone. He also speaks several languages, including Mandarin, and was pre-med at Yale! Kirstie, Scott and Mitch have known each other since they were 8 and 10 respectively and they sang together as 'the trio' in high school. They found Kevin online when he 'cello-boxing' - i.e. playing cello and beatboxing at the same time and they found Avi through a friend of a friend as they needed at least five members to audition for the Sing Off. Avi left in 2017 amicably for personal reasons - his mum was ill and he couldn't deal with the frenetic Pentatonix schedule. He did work with Matt though when Matt was trialling with the band.
