The US is upgrading to 6.8mm standard systems and already has about a decade of choosing (I think they have chosen by now) and things like NODs are last gen because lasers give away position to literally any thermal or other nod system, compared with what they are now developing or have, we have a whole new gen system so giving these 5.56 weapons that have decades of use is technically only a 'gift' to the Afghan people. The corrupt Afghan government, warlords, and armed forces have been selling those to them for at least 15 years. And the Saudis, Emiratis, Pakistanis, and others have been financing them for just as long. But yeah not the same kind we use. The US is upgrading to 6.8mm standard systems and already has about a decade of choosing (I think they have chosen by now) and things like NODs are last gen because lasers give away position to literally any thermal or other nod system, compared with what they are now developing or have, we have a whole new gen system so giving these 5.56 weapons that have decades of use is technically only a 'gift' to the Afghan people. Not sure why people are so dumb they don't realize that. It's not even like in a way like 'we are better anyway' but just a fact, next gen even rifles are on the way. If America really wanted, not just saying ignorantly, they could roll over the taliban again easily especially give it a year or two to let the new things propogate.
