Hey Bro. A year ago i watched your first vid on this engine and thought I CANT DO THAT..... But thanks to your vids I have done it and am enjoying my fixed and nice to drive commodore. I quite enjoyed the challenge. not a hard job but very time consuming. Cheers mate. From NZ.

just to note i did this roughly 6 years ago and never took the radiator out so there is no real need to but great vid for those wanting to DIY thanx for the vids
Thanks Mufudzi! Watched these vids about a dozen times each in order to replace the timing chains on a 2006 LE0 VZ. Ended up replacing the heads as well on account of the built up oil sludge left by the previous owner. Couldn't have done it without you! took me about 2 months for various parts to come from ebay and I was forgetting how it came apart by the end of it! But so good when she roars back into life afterwards. Thanks again.
@Mufudzi Gambiza - What can I say but "BLOODY AWESOME MATE" I thank you for your wonderful videos to help as many as you can, this has helped me immensely, I'm your friend for life mate.
Very good & informative! my VZ be looking like it has a sad head gasket, ill use this to help me with the journey in there & back out again, thanks for posting!
Honestly to completely rebuild a Japanese 4 cylinder from the 90s complete with new rings and big end bearings is half the work of just changing the timing chains on these things.
They're not a POS engine, Very reliable and put out decent power. They're just a big POS to work on 😂😂 but I do agree that the designers need a bullet.
great job brother one thing if i where you fit a breather filter on top of the engine valve i did that gold colour both side let that worse side breath this the reason it has timing chain suffer eveyone do this
Currently doing a LY7 motor and the air con compressor bracket has 6 bolts in it pain to get to and easy to miss a couple might be easier to get from underneath there is 1 horizontal bolt basically in line with oil filter and underneath
Thanks for doing this, good video! Sooner or later all Alloytec owners will face this. The handier one's will save themselves some money thanks to this video.
All, If you are removing the harmonic balancer, you don't need the special GM tool. 3 jaw pullers will work just fine. Just don't follow Mufudzi's way of grabbing the outside of the balancer. You should grab the 3 jaws around the steel center of the balancer. There are flat spots that the jaws will grab on to. If you grab the outside of the balancer, you will be driving to the wreckers buying a new one. Ask me how I know..... Otherwise Mufudzi is a wizard with the rest of the works. Also, the bolts for the AC compressor are a pain. You will find them eventually. Best lift front left and remove wheel and get under to see them.
Thanks man. I appreciate your advice. Im doing a chain job on my ve at the moment. I wondered if I should take the Wheel off or not. Also thanks for the advice on the pulley jaw pullers.
Thanks for this video. I am about to tackle this job myself and your videos will be a great help. I have a question about the AC compressor bracket. Where are the bolts located at the back? I can see you undoing them but I cannot find/see them on mine. Are there 2 of them at the back or just 1? Thanks
This was a major point of frustration. There is more than 3 bolts. I think it ended up being about 5 bolts. There are 3 bolts towards the back of the compressor. You literally have to feel for them. Easiest way I found to get to the back ones was to take the left hand front wheel off and then you can see the back bolts. Only thing is once you get the bolts out and the bracket is loose, you still can't get the bracket out as I think having the compressor still installed prevents the clearance to get the bracket out.
I think you were very brave. What if you had a problem and couldn't fix it yourself. It would be very expensive to have someone come to you to remedy. I wonder if I would be so brave.
Thanks for the video! The crankshaft is spinning when tryna loosen bolt. Do you know how to stop it turning to get it off and torque it? Also is the camshaft actuator allowed to turn without oil pressure? I think I might need a new one of those too lol
Hey brother, great video. I am now attempting to change my Timing chain. It definitely has been stretched quite alot. Just 1 question what MM size was the 3 Leg Gear puller u were using?i know it was the wrong 1. But its cheaper to get. Then the Harmonic Balancer...
Lol. I went over the top and got the 150mm. Hahaha. It worked all the same.. ran outta time. Trying to find bolt for compressor in the back. I can't see it.
Hope u still watch this post for replies I have a 2009 g8 would u know if it has a commador motor or a General motors 3.6 motor in it I know holden I need a us system land made them I'm getting a p016 code u had a 17 so I assume it's the other cam next to your ptoblem. It also gets severe misfires on the right side of the motor cold start sounds good after startup sequence runs for about 2 minutes then the fun starts, I mean guessing that when the solenoids start to tell the phasers to move gets p016 misfires start at that point and as the car gets hotter it gets worse and worse was think chain stretch or skipped but I'm also wondering about a cropped out phaser by passing oil due to work seals in it. Figure I'll do the chains and tensioner watching more the video to see how this comes apparently finally a holden motor video to see u have no idea how hard it is to get parts in Canada for this this especially on a 11 year old car
Mufudzi Gambiza yup. Changed plugs Stupidest design I’ve ever seen. Pull manifold off to get at middle and rear plugs. Runs fine during warm up. When it starts to call for phaser changes starts to run a bit rough. The warmer it gets the worse it gets. All cyl in right side. Pass side start to miss fire. That chain kit your put in is there a golden number for it. The GM 3.6 opened up sure looks like the same motor. I see Melling and Cloyes makes parts for the GM motor. But can’t find numbers in their system for g8. Since it runs great until phasing starts and gets even worse when hot I’m kinda thinking the phaser is shot. Also saw a vid on a ford motor with phaser problems that has the same Diesel engine rattle as mine apparently the Ford makes this sound when the phaser is shot. Think I have about 180000 km on motor. Kid needs a better car than his biggest piece of crap g6 I’ve ever seen. Probably will change chains tensioner. Phasers. Just trying to figure out where I’m getting parts from other than GM if possible.

Hi mate. Is there any screws to remove at the bottom of the radiator? I can't seem to get the radiator out. I've removed all hoses and all clips at the top, but it still won't come out. Cheers
