2019 my goal was to start learning watercolors. I kept them all in container in the order I did them. In August I felt I wasn't improving at all, and I went back to my comfort zone (pencils). Now, 2020 I was looking back at those paintings and was really surprised to see I actually HAD been improving. I'm glad you made this video. As artists we fail constantly, but it's the need to create that keeps us going. I think what a lot of people stumble on, is that it's hard(er) to see improvement when constantly switching materials (paper kinds, paint brands) and subject matter. If you switch constantly from fruit to landscapes to portraits you will see improvement more slowly than if you focused on one kind of subject for a week (or more). And now with constantly watching other artists on Instagram and UA-cam, you are only seeing a lot of other people's best works. Not the 1000 paintings they have they think are garbage! lol
Very very true! I think the number one thing here is... patience! It takes time to significantly improve. I'm currently interested in further improving my drawing skills, especially when it comes to anatomy - and it's still super hard, as it should be! (;
Thank you! “You will fail most of the time....”. I love hearing this because failing doesn’t stop me from going on and having fun. I just saw that Picasso painted 50,000 paintings but only 100 have been recognized as “good” or “valuable”. He was not considered a failure. You have to paint with that next new vision in mind and go back to the old failures when you have a vision of how to rescue.
Hi Liron ! This is the most useful and above all practical video of all the other ones you have posted ! because of the fact that you encourage and strive to push the watercolorist not to give in to frustration and failure ! Many other times I have pushed watercolor aside because I did not like the results I was getting , exactly like you said in the video .. But, I have bookmarked your video so that I can see it again to refresh the inspiration that you give us in order to keep going no matter what ! Quantity over quality that is the secret ! , needless to say I was doing it the other way and I was defeating myself ! Thanks for that kick !
Great video and advice. I love it when you say someone has to say it is ok to fail and not getting your painting right. Failures are always occasions to improve but we also need to hear we must get past the disappointment and see someone like you that encourage with a smile 😉
Perfect timing for this video Liron! I had been thinking of taking a break from watercolours as I felt like I was not moving forward ... after watching this I went back to look at some of my old work and was pleasantly surprised to see I actually had improved! Failures as you say are all, part of the process...Thanks!
Very good advice that hits home with me. I am an oil painter, been to art school and got a masters degree and have I think become very competent at that. But over the years I have been trying and mostly failing with watercolour and it's because of the reason said here. I've learnt though not to worry about getting colour spot on in watercolour and concentrating more on tone, realising watercolour is a totally different animal from oil, and if a painting is starting to look like a failure put it away and have a look at it next day. NEVER try to adjust it when frustrated you'll just overwork it. These realisations have improved my work quite a bit.
Luton I wanted to tell you I watch all you r videos and you are done to earth and give so much encouragement. THANK You I love what you do( Great),! You are a great teacher and Artist!
Rarely do my paintings become my vision. I have learned from you not to give up and sometimes I’m actually pleasantly surprised by the results. That said, I certainly relate to a lot that you talked about here. I haven’t given up,,, but I do need to move away from the torture,,, you are right,,, torturing oneself adds no value to the person or the process. Thank you again for being spot on with your analysis.
This was a very encouraging and timely video. just yesterday, I had a horrible painting, totally missed the mark, and I have up, feeling very sad. This gives me hope. Thank you Liron.
I love your perspective and frame of mind. It is so good to hear your words of wisdom from your experience. We all can view the results of your perspective in each of your wonderful paintings and videos. What sets you apart from the crowd is explaining your thoughts behind your work as you create and reflect on your work.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I needed to (1) know other people had the experience of yes, loving the result but also being ...surprised? That the result wasn’t at all what they were going for and (2) that its totally OK when that happens. Thank you so much!
Thank you for advice. I am procrastinating about starting to paint with watercolor and I think this is the kick in the ass I need. Wish me luck. Thanks again
You're right. Don't stress out and don't be a quitter. Painting is supposed to be fun, not misery! It's not the end of the world, because you will learn something every time anyway! Thanks, Liron! :)
I 100% agree with you when you talk about “sloppy practice.” While it may take more time to unlearn bad habits, the tedium of “correct practicing” may lead to not practicing at all. Enjoying the process is the surest way of improving in my experience.
Exactly! You can always increase the accuracy and quality later, once you get rid of some of the initial fears (: And it's so true - once the process becomes enjoyable there's no way back! I feel like every painting process is a celebration!
I am in this 'failure place' right now … I was at the point of giving my watercolor supplies away because I feel like nothing I attempt works out. Part of it is a lack of patience on my part, but part of it is setting out to do something, and completely failing to achieve it. I commented along these lines to my daughter - who went out and bought me, for a Christmas gift, the watercolor brushes I've been wanting to treat myself to, but thought I didn't deserve because my skill isn't 'there' yet. The funny thing is, I know the importance of failing forward - of working until you get it - I practice martial arts, and that is the basis of learning, especially coming into it later in life. For some reason, I have more difficulty applying this principle to my painting, so I am very happy to see that you are addressing this exact issue in this video!
I sometimes don’t have a vision and boy does it show! I keep going back and forth from your style and artist named Brienne Brown and the more realism painters I see in UK such as Geoff Kersey. I need to find myself. Love your videos and your art.
Totally agree. After almost two years I have finally let go of trying to be perfect and just enjoy the process. You have been such a help and inspiration with that.
Thanks Liron ! You just rescued me , I had lost a lot of motivation to paint because I was super slow in my paintings, no quantity ! I will follow your advise religiously ! Don't know how to thank you !!
Progress seems to come in little jumps, opposed to a steady gradual improvement. I often get frustrated but try to push through. You're right in saying that quantity is more important than quality. Gotta get some mileage on that brush!
Awesome video although I needed to hear this years ago 😂😂😂 however back on track thanks to people like yourself doing amazing videos on UA-cam. Yes its pushing through and perseverance, I realised judging myself so harshly did not make me a better painter😊 rather it was focusing on what I did well and expanding that. Thanks for all the work you do 💖💖
Thankful for the encouragement! AHHH...I definitely feel like I'm failing at watercolor! I'm so happy with my sketches, and I feel like I ruin them when I put in color! Everything looks over saturated and overworked! I want to keep going, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong so that I can see some improvement!
I’m happy you found this encouraging 😁 What I would suggest in your case is to disregard colors for a bit and focus on values. Start with lighter washes, and then put in darker shadows. Also try to recognize large areas of shadows rather than many small individual ones (this will vary depending on the reference of course). Use whatever color / saturation you want, but make the value the main actor here. Let me know how it goes (:
@@LironYan Thank you so much for the tip! I liked your video where you talked about organizing your time with creative freedom versus learning / focusing on particular skills. I want to jump ahead with creativity but should probably devote more attention to particular practices, like values. =) Thanks again for providing some direction!
Such good advice. I get so hung up on mistakes. It stops me painting sometimes and that’s just stupid when you think about it. Like I have to produce a masterpiece every time. That’s far too much pressure. You have a great attitude thank you for helping me see this
Thanks Liron, I have exactly that experience - I like the result on parts of my painting, and parts are just not what I was hoping for. I am going with improving my percentages now - not total perfection!
Perfect timing and a great advice Liron. I have been following you for a year or so. I must say your videos are educational as well as inspiring. Thanks for making me a part of your journey and for saying it's okay to fail.. 👍
I appreciate your honesty SO much. " You're going to fail" I love that. My failures, after being so careful, put me in a filthy mood. Hmm...I understand what you're saying but I'm a person who believes that internal dialog affects greatly how we see ourselves and our progress. To start with "I will fail" doesn't seem be a positive message to give myself. Rather, I approach art by saying "Every sketch/painting I do is valuable experience towards my goals." All the stuff about success and failure is for others to judge, not for me to worry about.
I consistently fail in water color. I give up, tell myself, I have no talent for this...but then I start up again, fail again...I don't know how you can judge whether or not your painting works. I am highly critical and live in an area of the country that has no art stores or artists' groups. I'm on my own, and I think nothing I do is good. It's depressing because I have a strong desire to make art. I do very well at drawing, have had a piece in a national exhibit. But painting..I struggle.
I have been painting for a while... use to be detail oriented, not to point of photo realism...... Now I am trying to reinvent myself..... oh how I torture myself trying to loosen up . I make disasters by tryin to pain quickly what I see- ending up becoming very heavy too quickly.... nothing left to do , no where to go , looks like gouache painting. I’m watching your videos over and over again..... trying to capture he lightness- essence of watercolor......! Keep trying🤨

This is very true....I've learned to just close my eyes and start painting...
only trouble is, when somebody approaches me to 'explain to them'
how I do what I do..then all hell breaks loose, I loose my concentration

Hi Liron,
Well said. I am starting to realize that not everything is perfect and you need to purge some practice pieces ( tries) and keep but for a little bit the ones that look good to you. Or else like me I look like a hoarder at the moment.
Ha, thanks Liron. I failed my vision two hours ago but really like how it came out. I think my vision is flawed a lot of the time. Happy accidents as he used to say. 😎
Great advice. I, like others, feel defeated before I even pick up my paintbrush. By the way, I like your painting 👍

Just keep swimming!

I attended your course on Udemy . I had been painting since ( for 4 months now) I am feeling that I am not improving.... most of the Colors get muddy...
I fail way more than I succeed. It can be discouraging but nice to know I’m not alone.
By the way, love the face in the beginning of the video! :D
When I start to nitpick at my paintings, I tell myself that this is not a test - no one will ever see my reference and know that it's not the same, or that I used artistic license, or just messed it up. I like to take risks with painting, otherwise it becomes boring, so I have to learn to throw out perfection
Me i stoped using water color and i use gouache i am better in gouache then watercolor
I'm staring at my white unblemished paper. If I start painting on it I will ruin it. What to do?
Paint a failed painting. The paper won't know.

I am highly critical and live in an area of the country that has no art stores or artists' groups. I'm on my own, and I think nothing I do is good. It's depressing because I have a strong desire to make art. I do very well at drawing, have had a piece in a national exhibit. But painting..I struggle.
My new motto:
Pick up that brush and FAIL!!
Liron sorry!!!!
Don't ever give up !
