How To Install A Garage Door Opener - First Time For Everything!

  • My 1st attempt at Installing an electric garage door opener. This was installed on a door that was always a manual door. The opener is made by Chamberlain, but the same procedures are used for Genie Sommer Stanley etc. I made a couple of mistakes along the way, but that makes things more interesting!

Excellent job! I’m thinking all you had to do to get that board on top of your door is to pull the door towards the board and once you get close you can lift the board and the garage door motor the same time but, your way work just as well! I like how you took steps in between you’re off camera stuff to show us the complications. That helps out a lot. You’re not a marketer trying to sell your services… That’s nice to see. Thanks for the video.

As for the narration and the video this is excellent! I don't know how he got the dog to walk in to trip the safety feature on the first test but that was terrific! A very informative and well documented instruction video! Great job!

This was perfect. My door is exactly like this one and since it was built in 1963, and my upright studs were also on 24" centers I was sure the header over the door would be the same so just went ahead and put the 2x4 in vertically as he did in the video. This made things much easier. Still don't have mine completely up because of a time crunch, but this has helped me avoid some pitfalls that I'm sure I would have had. Thank you so much for showing me how to do this.

Thanks a lot! I have been considering doing the install myself and had unanswered questions, but the mistakes that you made clarified almost everything that I was concerned about ... I appreciate that you didn't edit them out. One of the best how-to videos that I have seen on the topic. Now off to Lowes to buy some angle iron.

Good instructional video with neat tips. Has provided me confidence that this is a DIY. Thank you for sharing and making it easier for us. Appreciated much. Since I will be replacing an existing opener, that stopped working, my project should be a bit easier but one never knows the surprises that are lurking. Thanks again.

Awesome video! I was thinking the worst part of the video was that the wheels needed to be lubed and then you said it in the video. That was torture. Lol But thanks for taking the time to make this video, I'll be using it as reference for my installation.

Best garage door opener installation video I've seen here on UA-cam. And you're right... the mistakes make it interesting as I've yet to do a project without mistakes along the way of my 60 some plus years. I had an old house the first 12 years of ownership and I can't count the surprises that it unfolded. BTW, I tried WD40 and found I had to do it every 6 months. "Chain lube spray" on the rollers shafts did it for me. A real mess, but once cleaned up it was good for years... better than WD.

Great video, thank you so much , very informative ! I like the part where you said when you tried to mount the header bracket and you had to go outside the manual/information provide and you stated 'these things happen". Most people think every thing is a five minute job and nothing can go wrong. Like the fact the dog tripped the electric eye and the door went back up when you were closing it, shows how it should work.

There's a garage door guy trick to getting the opener in the air so you can open the door. Take your ladder, place the motorhead on the top step. Put one piece of the packing foam back in the box and use the box and possibly (I install professional so my boxes are smaller) the other piece of foam and that's your extra couple feet. It sounds really ghetto but when you're on your own a lot of us do it that way. I've never lost an opener ;-)

They make a brace call a strut you can use as a proper support for the top of the door. You can pick up at a garage door company for cheap. Your support is not long or strong enough. The strut is a u-shape bar witch gives it the strength it needs to support the top of the door properly. Don't use wd-40 use a light machinery oil like 3-in-1 oil. Also check door first by hand and make sure door works freely before hanging garage door opener. Not bad installation for a home owner. Your wires on the walls and the roof are straight most people take short cuts on that.

  • @thegaragedoorfan527

The down limits needs to be increased a little more to make the rail bend up. That's how we seal the door down with an opener.

My garage door has rubber feet on the door side, and a little piece of rubber on the motor side. The cool thing with that is that you don't need to fine tune it, it does it automatically as it senses resistance when it reaches the end (or an obstacle).
I'm surprised that chain is dangling...

Nailing header board isn't best choice. I recommend using long lug screws - at least 2 inch long. Nails tend to become loose under vibration.

A decent video just make sure the chain is 1/2 inch above the rail not really loose and disconnect that hinge where you see a big huge air pocket and see if you can realign that gap and clean it all up and make a brand new again
