The reason this center diff has failed is normally down to driver error for not locking the diff when they should, the wheels spin like crazy which destroys the diff in minutes if not seconds! Good video.
Thanks for tearing this apart, it was good to see how it's all put together. I'm trying to work out why mine has a lot of slack between high and low ratio and won't engage properly, can't see why looking at the construction but it helps to know what's there before taking it apart.
@@garage90uk Thanks, I figured it out today. The part you took removed off-camera at 2:53 has a little hammer style arm that operates the selector rod you can see sticking up when you remove the housing at 3:00, it's held on with a grub screw that came loose and the arm was loose on the shaft. Now thread locked in place and re-assembled. I've had this transfer box in 2 trucks over 8 years so it's a bit surprising.
Mine self destructed - curious if a rebuild or swap is a better way to go ? any thoughts on time/pricing a rebuild - how many parts are usually changed in a rebuild (some parts are likely destroyed) thanks
Bit hard to say without knowing the details of yours. I bought another transfer case so cheaply that I don't think rebuilding was worth it in my case. If yours has really broken up inside then you will get metal fragments about that will all need cleaning out etc.

Good video.
Thanks for the comment, you are spot on that is exactly what happened!
Good to see someone who is not " an expert" having a go
Thanks! That is exactly the situation. Just using basic tools. Slow but we get there.
Great video, experiencing the same on my Defender at the moment. FYI they made the LT230 until 2016 (last Defenders). Good luck!
Hope all goes well. Thanks for the info.

Ah that is great you found it useful. Is really what I had in mind for the video. Hope you get to the bottom of your issue.

The first year of the LT230 transferbox was in fact in 1982 when Range Rover’s came with automatic transmission
Ha thanks. I knew I was setting myself up for a mistake when talking about dates and timelines!
