I only use foundation less frames with a 3/4" starter strip at the top. My bees are smaller and have no problems going through the Queen excluder and my drones are huge. Small cell brood emerges a day or two sooner than the bigger bees. I have hygienic bees also I monitor for varroa but have not had to treat for 4 years. This is a link to a short drone video I did. ua-cam.com/video/BkyjAahfUUU/v-deo.html
Very nice! We are happy to hear that! We will definitely check out your video. Thanks for commenting! :)
Very interesting! I will check out your video. I can get small cell foundation and expect to still need to treat for mites but between small cell and drone frames, that the mite levels would be reduced. It will be a good experiment next year to look at mite levels on two hives... one with small cell and the other with standard. I'm new to beekeeping and it may take a few years for the mite levels to be an issue here... we will see.
Beekeeping. Experiment. Too Many Bees. Happy Maximum!! Very good video 🐝🐝🐝☮️☯️
Thank you! :)
4.9mm is only the upper threshold, over time they become better smaller down to 4.5mm in many old ferals I've measured
Great video info,thanks

I would be interested in knowing how you decide where to put your bee yards. When do you start looking for another yard. There does not seem to be much for my bees to eat where I live. Lots of pine trees, but that does not help the bees much.
I like watching your videos very much, do you feed a pollen substitute at all in the winter?
We do not, we have a lot of pollen in our area! But if you don’t it’s a good idea. Thanks for watching!
I am currently converting my bees into a 4.9mm. size. Thank you for sharing your experience guys, keep posting!
Thank you for watching! :)
I live in Appalachian mountains of North Georgia. Gonna walk the railroad tracks to your daddy's house! Love him! I have a problem! My cell and t.v. are STUCK on Anna Kra and Pavel Beekeeping With Experience! 😂😍
My other problem is that YOU haven't asked ur daddy bout my wax moth problem! PLEASE don't forget sweetheart! KNOW y'all are busy, but I'm fretting these moths and trying to keep em OUT OF MY STORED HONEY SUPERS! WITHOUT PARAMOTH crystals!
Thanks! :) I have and I already answered it. Go back to the original question, the answer should be there! He said he leaves them on top of the hives, a few bees are always up there cleaning them out, keeping them in a good shape! Thanks for watching!
@@AnnaKra, oh sorry I missed it! My bad! Thanks Anna and good idea! PLEASE say " THANK YOU " to your daddy for me!
Bit of distortion around the wires. What do you think about plastic. I am sure it wouldn’t do it as much.
We don't like plastic for a few reasons. We don't like eating honey that sat in plastic and in the heat. Also, the bees have a hard time building comb on plastic. Some distortion is normal, they are still in a transitional stage. Thanks for watching! :)
Do you prefer a particular species of honey bees?
We have Italian bees! Thanks for watching!
Nice and calm
Hello ms Anna & Sir' thankz again for teaching us : ) "very inspiring episode".
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching! :)
@@AnnaKra my pleasure ms Anna & sir : )
I don't use foundation. I hot glue a strip of thin wood 1 or 2mm thick at top of frame this helps bees build wax to suit themselves, in stead of wire I use bamboo barbeque skewers. This also means I can cut drown brood out, with no wire in the way.
Awesome!
Thank you I learned something from you I appreciate that
Glad to hear it!! Thanks for watching!
Hello, I hope you are well! I am wondering if you find that small-cell foundation makes the colony more or less likely to swarm? Or no difference?
Yes, he is Russian. Thanks for watching.
Do you guys have small hive Beatles problems? If not what do you do to stop them?
We do not. You can buy beetle traps from pretty much any beekeeping store!
Great information and have also had smaller bees from old-old comb.
In Virginia here many years ago

Nice tip grandpa, i love all your ideas 🥰🐝🐝
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you both of you, my question is , in no Winter area how will you produce alot of honey? Thank you
The bees don’t produce honey in winter. Thanks for watching!
they sure as shit do in non extreme/mild winter areas. like hawaii or brazil etc. which i believe was his question? may not be as much as sling/summer time, but the definitely do. i know this because i have bees in hawaii. winter day time temp are still in the 80s
How are you guys doing? This concept of using 4.9mm is extremely useful and until today a huge secret. Most bee stores only carry the standard 5.5mm. Your content is unique and extremely important, and we really miss you. Hopefully you guys will come back soon and continue to share with us on your experiments. Thanks
Thank you! It's been a crazy last couple of years. But yes, planning to be back to make more content!
always enjoy your Dads videos. I have to concentrate to decode him sometimes though. Thank him for making me smarter haha.
Thank you! We appreciate that!
What is the link for the queen cage your father used? Good video, I have a hive that is going small cell in the spring. Nice to see someone doing it.

@@Hurricanehamo Thanks for watching! :)
If you have a larger type of bee, is the small drawn foundation also good or do they struggle with the larvae to get out ?
We have larger bees on small cell, they should have no problem. Thanks for watching!

with all the rain that we have been getting, the temp , dropped in the 60's, here in Iowa
Yeah, that’s pretty cold for bees. Thanks for watching!
