Was there an update on the varroa mite count after the Thyme and coconut oil treatments????
So the queen must be in cage 15 days while i put the treatment (oil coconut and thime) ?

The hive definitely needed more bees and brood. It wouldn’t hurt to downsize to a 8 or 5 frame box until you release the Queen and get her to laying. If the Queen doesn’t go to laying a lot of eggs that 10 frame box is going to be hard for that number of bees to keep warm. I know Pavel has a lot of experience and I wish you the very best of luck on saving this hive! Also, I really like your videos when you and your Dad are in the introduction! After all it’s your channel.

About reducing it to a nuc, he said yes it wouldn't hurt and you can. We still have time and it's still warm here in SC for another month or so. Also, according to Russian studies the bees don't warm the whole hive anyway, they keep a certain temperature in a cluster but not in the whole hive. So, it doesn't matter if they have all that extra space they winter just fine.
Ana, sorry but I respectfully disagree with part of your response. The bees will be trying to just keep the cluster at the specify temp but the more cold air surrounding them, the harder they have to work . It would basically be like the difference of the hive being located in Canada instead of South Carolina. It’s like you putting on a light sweater when it’s below zero rather than an large thick over coat. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say.
A couple of comments, respectfully submitted; you and your Dad do great work and it sincerely appreciated.. People would get the impression that the queen must be caged if you add brood; that is only correct if the brood frames are moved WITH the bees on them. Newly hatching brood will take immediately to the queen; it’s the bees accompanying the brood that would view her as foreign. Here, you needed more young bees immediately and thus moved brood and bees. Often you will shake off the bees, transfer only brood, and do not need to do short -term caging. Next, I think a better option than putting queen in a small cage would have been to make an 8” square push-in cage out of #8 hardware cloth, and put her in there along with a few attendants, placing the cage over one of the small areas of brood so new attendant nurse bees would hatch out and support her, but she would also have open cells to lay in in immediately. Cooped up, she can’t lay. Lastly, I think feeding protein supplement right now, along with syrup, would help with getting a lot of new bees laid and raised before winter. Good video. Fun scramble moments too. I’ve used lemongrass and wintergreen before in feed for trachea mites and other well being benefits. Just learned that planting mint around the hives is effective vs varroa too. Used hop guard strips - Just too expensive. Last - are you Russian or east European? I ask because at the end of video you say ‘IF we are around’...

You'r very welcome! No, we use multiple methods to control varroa mites. Thyme oil is one of the oils we are experimenting with lately. We will be posting updates soon!

Did get the second caged bee. The hive was doing badly. It’s queen was caged. He released the first caged queen in her hive. He added brood frames to this weak hive. Then he took another caged hive. Kept her in cage with lost of nurse bees. And added that second caged queen in the weak hive???? Is that what he did?

I really like this video. But the language you speak is more polish than Russian. Sound like it...to me ? Well Varroa mites comes from Asia originally. I guess it was there since the begging of the time and Asian bees live along side with the mites. I believe that interbreeding with Asian queens and just about any drone will enhance genetically mites resistance. Russia is just about 2 meters on the map. Everything east from Ural mountains is Asia. Good place to look or excellent genetic materials is along Ensei river in Russian oldbelievers families ...and region of Altai mountains should be good place too.
Second approach is Afican bees. They also showed certain resistance to mites . Mainly due to having different hygienic habits than European bees . It was recorded that they do spent more time grooming each other .
The last thing on my mind is to reinvent the wheel again.

Maybe with the dry cheese cloth there could be a small connection to wick from a larger reservoir of the oil thyme mix.

What about the queen from the hive he took the brood from. I didn't see him check for her.
I raised bees when I was in my teens and we never fed our bees. Now when I see a hive they all have sugar water, how can that be good.
Also does every hive get mites.
you can almost bet that all hives have varroa mites today. It is a very serious problem.
Yes, it has changed a lot. Depending on the location some bees still may need to be fed to survive. The bees use sugar water like nectar, and make honey out of sugar water and pollen. Sugar may not be packed with nutrients but Pollen is, it has the necessary nutrients for the bees to survive. In some parts of the world, there are no mites, but most parts of the world the mites are an issue. Also, this is one of my hives, it's my first year beekeeping, there are so many ways you can lose a hive and as a first-year beekeeper it's hard to know what to do in each situation and what signs to look for. But I'm still learning. Most beekeepers lose their hives in their first year of beekeeping, this is extremely common. We are posting this video for educational purposes doesn't mean all of our hives are this bad. Thanks for watching.

Have you ever used organic confectioners sugar on the bees so they are forced to clean each other off to kill the mites?
We have never tried that. Yeah, my dad can be hard to understand. If we get funded we will work on the subtitles so that people can understand him better.

Maybe you guys can try that powdered sugar thing. They put it lightly on every bee with a sifter so that they will groom each other and it keeps the mites off of them. It seems like a pretty good idea.

I wanted you to know that I tried using coconut oil and tyme oil and today I counted 50 mites on my mite board.
How many mites fall naturally on the board? Is that more than what normally falls?

Anna Kra yes, many have switched to single brood boxes for winter here inCanada which has similar weather to Russia

That hive might not make it; it would be best if you combine it with another hive to give it a chance, the population of bees don't even warrant a 5frame nucleus; I guess the weather in your area might help you but it is a slim chance on that.No harm done in trying but for increase chance of making it, down size it into a nuc or combine it.Dan
