    I totally understand the concept of the purple tractor. But an Oliver 1850 with the Perkins 354 diesel engine is my personal favorite of all the Oliver tractors. With that being said, it is your tractor. If purple paint makes you happy, by all means go for it. Thanks for the video !!!

      It’s just something different. I still want a green one as well. This one was destined for the junk pile so I figured it might as well be purple.

    I had to have the hydrapower rebuilt on my 1650 2 years ago - I knew something was slipping, but didn't know if it was the clutch or the hydrapower, and it ended up being the hydrapower. My friend Joe did the rebuild. My 1550 had a Mallory distributor on it for a while. It was used, and Joe put it on when the original Delco distributor gave out. The points for that Mallory were very expensive. The Mallory distributor gave out and Joe replaced it with a good used Delco distributor he had from another Oliver. Korves Oliver is having a distributor reproduced that will work on the Fleetlines, Supers, 3-digits, and 50 series. I actually bought one just to have on the shelf. Has a place to attach the tach, for models that have one. Enjoyed hearing the history of all your 100 and 50 series tractors. Very cool.

      Thanks!! I’ve been wanting to try one of the new Korves distributors myself. We had a Mallory in our 1655 for years and the points were very finicky it seemed like. I finally got them set and haven’t touched it since! Hopefully one of these days I’ll get time to work on the HydraPowers. It’ll probably be when I need the tractor and everything is getting behind haha

    My favorite. My love for Olivers started when my dad bought a used 1650 about a quarter century ago - I think the 50 series will always be my favorite. That 1650 gets used every summer for making hay.

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 роки тому +1

      The 50 series was definitely the heyday of Oliver. They had a great product and great management to back it up.

    A dealer-friend of mine sent me an 1800c. Rings shot and so was the clutch. Otherwise nice. Didn't keep it. At the time, about 1200$ repairs. Couldn't do it. Tourqe intact as was everything else. Like the Moline tractors of the time, wish I had known better. Probably nice tractor. Gas, which didn't excite me. How times change! A diesel Minneapolis 670super,G1000 and bigger Oliver diesels would now be of intrest. I was impressed by Oliver using 6 cylinder diesels in thier 77-88 models.

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, I wish I had kept a lot of things that I got rid of over the years but at the time you got to do what you Gotta do. Oliver was the first using six cylinders. And at one time sold like 43% of all Diesel tractors on the market. Pretty impressive.

Looked like to me on video.We have to assistant our throttle on 1020 RU . It’s the only tractor that has lived here for most of its life .

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 роки тому +1

      I’d have to look up the top speed on the high speed rear but you definitely see them more often. I’ve always wanted to build one with the high speed and a hydraulic shift. They claim it goes scary fast. Sounds like it would make a great video 🤣

    I have recently purchased a 1600 diesel wide front with the creeper gear transmission. I know the middle shifting rail is different but what else is different in the transmission cause I really have no interest in the creeper gear and eventually would like to swap it to hydra power. Any information you have on it would be interesting cause I ain’t found much information on this unit

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  Рік тому

      The gear ratios are different. And then the unit behind the engine works with it to make the super slow speeds. If you don’t want that set up you’d be better off to just sell it and find a different tractor

  • @corydriver7634

    Isn’t that what Oliver did…take a green tractor and paint it purple? I’m not the expert I saw Chris’ purple tractor and from what I recall they also turned them green again once they were done with them. Right?

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 роки тому +1

      Yes. They started with 1 and then the advertisement was so good they were supposed to pull one from each branch house and paint it purple. But no records of how many or which ones have surfaced.

    Those 2020s always seemed weird to me. I've never been around one, but I'm pretty sure they all had some form of problems. The 2010s had some problems too from what I've heard, but at least they had the SyncroRange like the larger frame tractors rather than the twin stick. Those early Deere loaders were kind of a pain too. We have a Model 48 loader on our 4010, and its annoying to deal with, especially since we take it on and off quite a bit.

    • @rosstheoliverman
      @rosstheoliverman  2 роки тому

      I knew the 2010 had a lot of problems but never heard as much about the 2020. It’ll hang around as long as I’m alive. I got too much in it now 😂

  • @danw6014
    @danw6014 Рік тому +1

    The 2020 should have been ordered with the heavy front end which would have greasable wheel bearing. We had a 1020 with a 48 loader. We used it hard everyday to feed dairy cows. The two big issues we had with it was we would eat front wheel bearings and the ignition points wouldn't last long. Converting it to electronic ignition would solve the second problem. As far as the wet brakes go, we never had any issues with any of the new generation John Deeres as far as brakes go. That 1650 would make a good tractor for running a compost turner. When my neighbors got into making compost i ran it with my 4020 with the transmission set in the tow position and pull the whole outfit with my 730 diesel. I tied the steering on the 730 and ran a rope back to the 4020 so I could stop it if I needed to. We eventually got an IH 186 Hydro to operate it.

    I spend alot of hrs on a open station 1800 checker board,its started out as a gas and in a few years my dad put a LP tank on it and a injector carb,,..i plowed alot at night pulling a Oliver 5 bottom 18s pipe plow on its rear while it was snowing hard as hell just to get the corn ground flipped over before freeze up in Iowa,,and the heat houser came in handy,along with stopping at the ends just to warm your have frozen hands with leather gloves on over the exhaust pipe.I remenber the manifold was cherry red at night glowing in the dark,,if you find a 1800 checker board that has the same oliver pull handle as mounted on the left side,thats had one mounted also on the left fender,on top just above the fender front headlight it's proberly our old one ,,that handle saved my life plenty of times as i used to ride there hanging on for dear life, 5 years old and older ,,my legs bounce off those drive tires plenty of times,holding on tight for my deal life ,if dad hit a sudden bump,,oh ya. Those were the days of farm safety for sure

    John Deere 20 series utility front ends were notoriously weak, my great uncle had a 1020 that he used for years and when he put a loader on it in the 80s the front end broke the second time he moved manure, went and got an industrial front end from a 40 series and it is still like that today.
