As I was a taxi driver for 40 years 30 hrs private hire & 10 yrs black cabs all my cabs lasted over 300k miles.the main reason for this is two fold.number one constant hot engines don’t wear.number two you must change oil & filter every 5k miles.as for the build quality of bodywork on individual vehicles could be a very different matter.

Yes,those VW PD engines are good.Have one at 302,000 miles. However had to replace camshaft at 260,000 when a valve lifter collapsed and ate the cam lobe.Oddly enough all other lifters and lobes had little to no wear. However not the end of the world.Would agree on rear suspension bushes,a know VW follicle as are rear brake calipers.

I had a 2001 V6 mondeo which developed a comon steering fault, my mechanics didn't want to touch the car so I sold it for spares or repair. Few years later, my friend had a 2004 TDI which developed the same fault. Someone tried to fix that car, but it was junk after with regular steering, brake, airbag faults and many ongoing problems.
However, I loved my Mondeo when it was good.

Fiesta V (mk6) 1.4 tdci. incredibly well built and rust proofed, quite rugged, a best of type Peugeot diesel engine under the bonnet mated to an equally strong Ford 5-speed box, good electrics too. the only major weaknesses are in the drivers seat metalwork (can be strengthened) and the original factory fitted road springs.
I'm the 5th owner of mine which is 22 years old and has 264,000 miles on the clock. it still drives like its a couple of years old.
another one for this list is the Mazda B2500/Ford Ranger. virtually indestructable, its only the rust that gets them in the end.
you can buy any car with a long lasting pedigree but if you don't maintain it properly it will turn into a dog just like any other.

@@user-so8wh4xf3t My mum has a 2012 VW polo diesel. She has nothing but issues but most of it is cause by the emissions control systems. Like the EGR and the DPF. I can imagine they wouldn't get as dirty on a petrol engine but I'm glad the Aygo doesn't have an EGR valve, there is a location on the engine that can be machined out to fit and EGR but I think that's for the 1KR-FE engines fitted in the Yaris. I only discovered it when I downloaded a full engine schematic for the 1KR-FE and I saw an EGR valve fitted in the schematic, convinced my car didn't have one I located the location and on the Aygo it's a flat part of the engine casting in the shape of the EGR mating surface, just it hasn't been machined out to fit one.

@@micheals1992My first brand new car after 25 years driving was a new Polo TDI Match, with the three cylinder 1.2 engine. It was extremely economical, rather odd to get used to the turbo lag on it and it sounded great but the steering was awful, it was so light, had no feeling when going faster. It also creaked and rattled a bit when new but the steering issue was unsafe, I should have taken it in but as id had other issues with it, I got rid after about 2 months. Very disappointed to have to do that. I got an Abarth 500 after that.

I have a late 2012 Toyota Auris Hybrid, and I've just clocked 124k miles. Still drives like a dream, and of course, the fuel economy is truly outstanding at 68 to 74 mpg in the winter and 74 to well over 80 mpg in the summer.

    • @oddities-whatnot
      @oddities-whatnot 3 місяці тому +1

The main reason is the engine is not used as much with being a hybrid. Thats why they are a sensible purchase and can do huge mileages. Only downside is the hybrid batteries, they will need replacing eventually at a lot of cost, thats what puts me off buying one but I know I will save a lot in petrol money with the far greater economy. Choices choices…

Just hit 180,000km in my 2016 Ford Galaxy which is built on the Mondeo platform. Must say I fuckin love it. So much room for the family and crap in the enormous boot and does 40’ish mpg.
Water pump and timing belt just done, serviced the auto box last week and serviced regularly in general.
I’m really hoping it’ll get to 250,000km. I do about 15,000 per year so I’ll be there in about 5 years.
In the three years I’ve owned it so far it’s been absolutely bulletproof, just regularly servicing needed and I chose to service the auto box just in case it had never been done.

My 1999 Nissan Maxima 3 litre V6 is poor on MPG round town but is very economical on the open road. It has 257,000km on the clock and I have had a new radiator, starter motor (after market) and a new alternator spread over the 17 years I have owned it. As the second owner I have put 157,000 on the clock, and it still does 33+ MPG even with the aircon going on long trips. I use the recommended 95 octane, and service it religiously. It has failed its WoF (six monthly) twice, I damaged a rear light cluster, and the drivers seat belt needed replacing. It is a great car on the open road. My previous vehicle was a 2 litre Nissan Widetrack Bluebird, also a very reliable car and very economical five speed manual.

Vauxhall Astra... 500,000 miles ? You must live on another planet. Vauxhalls are disposable cars, and the old joke that the wheels fall off a Vauxhall that reaches 100,000 miles is very much a comment on their build and engineering quality. Same with most Fords too.

I’ve gone full circle with cars. I used to think that German cars were superior in terms of reliability and engineering and French, British cars were a bit naff. Now I’m older and more experienced, I realise that a lot of the cheaper brands are actually really well made despite the cheaper appearance and extremely reliable but aren’t necessarily the fastest. I really despise a lot of German cars now. There are so many badly made models. I’m no longer a badge snob. I have heard some horror stories with newer TDI engines. Pretty much the entire vag group now I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole.

@@CarsWithBen I was a taxi driver for nearly 20 years, I managed 451,000 miles in Peugeot 406 with a 1.9 XUD Diesel engine. Broke timing belt at 150,000, engine was repaired and the only thing that killed it just before it’s 8th year of working was a broken rear arm just before the PSV expired. My boss then retired it, just before it turned 19 years old, and replaced it with a 406 with a 2.0 HDI that had 200K on the clock. The XUD engined 406 was bought with 118,000 miles on the clock, and was 10 years old at the time, and led a tough life towing cattle. Any car should make 500k miles? 😂 What an absurd thing to say. The vast majority won't because it's uneconomical to fix them. Any car will if you replace the engine, transmission, electric, rusted panels. A bit like the Only Fools and Horses Trigger quote of an old broom having the head and shaft replaced many times. They don't make 500k miles because putting a replacement 5k engine in to a car worth 2k isn't going to happen. Virtually no cars make 500k for this reason, even with good maintenance.
