    Dave, I was at the show Friday too! First time at York, by the way. Sorry I missed you but I can't say I wasn't looking. I DID run into Shawn Conahey, in fact he was the first guy I saw when I walked in the Orange Hall when it opened at 9:00! Made my day! I THINK I saw Nick and Sean at a distance but if it was them I didn't have the energy to sprint across the parking lot that late in the day. I had a fun time chatting with the Hennings crew when I finally found them! The seemed to be stuck in the back like an afterthought!
    I got some good stuff too and what I considered some very good prices, an MTH Union Pacific "Forty-Niner" engine (Proto-Sound) for $250, a Lionel Reading Pacific from 1989 (looks like it was never run) for $135, a Williams Reading SIX car passenger set for $150, AND a pre-war tinplate Baby Ruth car for my pre-war tinplate 259e freight set. This one's the cool Baby Ruth car with the sliced candy bar on it. You could slice candy bars in those days, they were as big as bricks!
    That's the only boxcar I got. If I'd seen some Atlas steam era "Hams-Bacon-Lard" billboard boxcars I'd have grabbed them too, but didn't see any I didn't have already.
    I'll send you some pictures if you like.
    Will I go to York again? Probably not this year but certainly next year, I certainly enjoyed myself!
    Best of luck waking up that Santa Fe unit but you probably don't need it!

      It definately can be overwhelming but this is the system I use at shows, especially the big ones. While I appreciate all the exhibitors who display I try to move quickly. What I mean by this is if an exhibitor has wares I'm not interested in or can't use in any way I may just give it a few seconds look and move on. If I DO see something I'm interested in THEN I'll take the time. Basically I figure there's just so many hours the show is open so I have to hustle. Do I miss anything? I don't think so. I believe, but do not know for certain, that after World War II Lionel was thinking about S scale. The 9 inch cars were a baby step in that direction. I have always thought they are beautiful, well detailed cars. I love them and pick them up whenever I can.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 Рік тому

      In everything I've read about Lionel I've never seen a mention of S Gauge being considered. Pre-war of course they had Standard, O, and OO products but only O made the cut after the war. Dropping OO was probably a mistake but it seemed like a good idea at the time.
      American Flyer of course did the reverse, they dropped O Gauge after WW2 and concentrated on S.

    • @trainman5603
      @trainman5603 Рік тому

      @@wayneantoniazzi2706 Thanks for the information. I ask, however, how do you square nine inch cars (basically S gauge) on O gauge track and trucks if S gauge was not being considered? As I noted the cars are beautiful, well detailed and well built. That length also was in gondolas, flat cars and tank cars. From what I remember of Lionel OO scale, the nine inch cars were bigger, but a forty foot car would be 10 inches, close to true O scale, and after the nine inch cars were dropped the later 6464 box cars and 6462 gondolas and flat cars were.closer to true O scale.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 Рік тому

      @@trainman5603 Nine inch cars? Easy answer, they cost less to build and so could be sold for less but still maintain a good profit margin. A pure business decision. Keep in mind Lionel's ubiquitous 2-6-4 engines (think the 2018 and it's variants) were closer to S gauge than proper O but were a lot less expensive and attractive to first-time buyers or buyers on a budget. That's all there was to it.
      And in fact, those 2-6-4's are SO common you can still pick one up cheap! And let me tell you, they RUN!

    • @trainman5603
      @trainman5603 Рік тому +2

      @@wayneantoniazzi2706 Interesting observation about costs and profit. I have no basis for disagreeing except to make this point: the smaller cars and locomotives are less expensive and thus increase, as you point out, profit. If true then why on that why on the heels of doing that did Lionel slowly drop the nine inch cars while still making the 2025's, 2035's, 2037's 675's, 2026's, 2018' s, 2020's, 671's, 682's, produce near O scale F3's, Trainmasters, EP5's and in 1964 reintroduce the true 0 scale 773? One explanation could be that changing dies for the metal die cast engines was expensive and adding near O scale diesels could accomplish the O scale effort with less expense after a decision was made not to compete with American Flyer in the S scale market.
      You may disagree, and I respect that, but to me it looks like Lionel in the late 40's was, forgive the expression, toying with the idea of S gauge. For a lot of reasons JLC nay have decided to let Flyer have the S gauge msrket and Lionel would do O gsuge.
      If true history shows JLC was correct. S gauge has never achieved the popularity of either HO or O gauge. As we model railroaders age being able to see details in O gauge is a decided advantage over HO or N, while S is OK.
      Still the nine inch cars are, in my view, a neat anomaly in our O gauge history.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 Рік тому

      @@trainman5603 You make some very good points and I can't disagree with any of them.
      Of course it's all speculation and guesswork on our part. Those involved with the decision making at Lionel are long gone now and apparantly left little behind that can inform us of their decision making processes. It does seem that for years after the war Lionel seemed to be torn between the ideas of "Are we toy makers or are we model makers?" Not that any of this really matters but it's fun to speculate.
      On a personal note I never was interested in HO although I did mess around with N Gauge for a while. It was fun and fascinating but I came back to what I call the "Thundering majesty of O!" N Gauge trains don't shake the house to it's foundations that O Gauge trains in "full cry" do!

    Looks like you got some great items at fantastic prices. I also have the Baby Ruth cars. My orange one has coil couplers, and one of them opens up constantly whenever I pass through the diverging route of my turnouts. A real head scratcher. The Mega Steam is is a great product. Unfortunately, none of the hobby stores around here don't appear interested in carrying it or any smoke fluid for that matter. Our local hobby store doesn't carry very much to support model railroading, especially on 0-scale items. I, like you, tend to have only the big rugged trains in my collection and no whimpy, finicky ones. I have a lot of steam engines I run with pill and / or resistor type elements that I replace myself. I use unsented mineral oil found at Walmart in the overcounter pharmaceutical isle. It's sold as a laxative. I paid $3.97 for a 16 Oz bottle. I buy bottles of candel scents at Hobby Lobby used to make scented candles. Mineral oil is parrifin oil and has a low 120-degree smoke point.. It's what manufacturers use to make their smoke fluids. Even Robert Grossman mentions this in his instructions. Some guys use Johnsons baby oil as it's just mineral oil with fragrance, but I don't use it because I don't know what the fragrance is made of. There or those who are very critical about using anything other than a store bought manufacturered smoke fluid, and I assume they are either ignorant or likely don't do their own repair/replacement on their engines and they are just a resistors or have some of the newer more finicky engines. However, I have not found the scents you bought from Mega Steam. I have found that vanilla and cinnamon Swirl make for good scents. A little goes a long way. 5 or 6 drops in a Mega Steam sized dropper bottle of unsented mineral oil. I have been using this for years and have never burned out an element. Pill or otherwise.

      For the car that the coupler opens on, it may have something to do with the pickup shoe, is it a flying shoe type? Sometimes they can be triggered unintentionally

      @dagryffyn hobby Thanks, Dave. Yes, it has the sliding shoe as all coil couplers do. I really like the Mega Steam scents, but since I can't find this locally, it can get pretty expensive buying it online with shipping costs running nearly as much as the fluid itself. I have had great success with this fluid formula, and it makes a lot. I do run a lot of steam engines and go through it fairly quickly. Hobby Lobby has quite a few candel scents to choose from. I have used pine, cedar, peppermint, vanilla, and cinnamon Swirl. With great results. Works with resistor and pill type elements. It has a little thicker viscosity than manufactured fluids but will thin down, adding the scents. You can add as much of the scented oil to your liking. It's not as cheap. 4 to 5 bucks a bottle. I think the rule of thumb is 10 to 1. I have never made it that strong. The most I have done is 10 drops of scented oil to a 2 Oz Mega Steam bottle of mineral oil. I have added a few drops of 90 proof rubbing alcohol to cut it, and it helps keep the smoke unit cleaner. Add this at your own risk as it is flammable. I would not advise using lamp oil, also found at Wal-Mart, I have used this, and it is flammable. It did smoke as long as you don't get the smokeless type, and I never had a fire using it. However, the oder is very strong and smells like a refinery in the train room no matter which scent is used. It's really cheap. A gallon jug is 7 bucks. The main ingredient is petroleum hydrocarbons, which is also an ingredient listed on a bottle of Lionel smoke fluid.

    And this is why I did not go to York. I would have come home with way too many trains!!

      Understandable. I bring limited cash and pretend no one takes credit cards. I also try to remember the disapproving look I would get from my dad when ever I spent money when I was a kid. Usually on stereo equipment. 😆

      @@dagryffynhobby If I still had half the money I spent on stereo equipment growing up, I would be retired.
