22:08 Something interesting to add here- the Lorem Ipsum passage is a placeholder equivalent used in text parsing in all sorts of things. It's basically gibberish, it doesn't really mean anything, but it is rooted in a latin phrase used in a philosophy text from Cicero. The reason why I bring this is is because it might relate to the themes of the game. Spoilers, obviously. The phrase is from “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit, sed quia non numquam eius modi tempora incidunt ut labore et dolore magnam aliquam quaerat voluptatem.” Translating to: “Nor is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure.” Essentially saying that while no one actively searches for pain or trauma, it is because of that pain that some people can become stronger, and from that obtain immense satisfaction and catharsis. Essentially, what happened with Young in the original game according to your interpretation. As for the stuff with Nora, i'm not entirely sure how to interpret it. A more positive interpretation is that the game seems to be much more about helping others to gain actualization (i.e Nova helping Zera by removing her seed, the whole thing with shrinking down and cleaning Dust, etc.), which is possibly being taught to Nora in the real world. Her problem seems to be less "interacting with others is painful" like Young, and more "I do not see the worth in others or my own life". This is the dark side of lacking a meaningful purpose, while some can handle being utterly directionless and the universe having no purpose others cannot, and need to shoulder meaningful responsibility in order to make their lives have purpose. I think that the world of Anodyne 2 acts as a sort of purpose-giver for Nora, who is embodied through Nova. The ending where the Anodyne fires and the world is wiped out is her completing her "given" purpose, while the one where she chooses to rebel and save the world, having found the value in others and herself in interacting with them, is her asserting her new purpose as an individual. This is mostly what I read into with my own playthrough of the game, and i'd love to hear what others think.
First time I ever skipped the spoilers in a nitrorad video, and now that I've finished I'm back to see what he has to say. And I don't think I'll ever forget DesertNPC.
I thought that the Metacoins were meant to be a distraction for Nova and forget about what happened in Dustbound Village. That’s why the coins are placed everywhere and even in spots that are easily accessible. It’s so that Nova or the player will see them and pick them up instead of thinking about what is right and have an incentive in continuing their quest and achieving the Anodyne
I think it also ties into C. Visionary’s “Just Get it Done” mentality, basically giving Nova as many convenient resources as possible so that she can prepare Anodyne without any distractions; especially with the card tracker showing you exactly where you need to go to find more levels. This contracts greatly with Palisade, who actively encouraged Nova to explore the world around her, interact with other people for hints, take breaks, and figure out problems for herself.
So I recently discovered this obscure Dreamcast game called Illbleed that I'd love to see get more love. I know that Nitro Rad loves B-games, & this is a B-horror game inspired by B-horror movies.
NumberOne#1 omg I got obsessed with Illbleed like 10 years ago now! So much so I dug out my brother Dreamcast and bought a copy. I couldn’t even play level 2. It’s so interesting with the art concepts, but the gameplay is just awful. That being said...I’d love to see it reviewed. 😈
Just completed Anodyne 2 with no spoilers. SO glad I never dipped into the spoiler segment without playing the game on my own first! I may never have experienced Anodyne 1 OR 2 with your videos, and that would be a darn shame... Thank you again, for the years of quality video game content, humor, and heart.
You could argue that the Meta Coins are another meta commentary as they're introduced in-universe as a way for Nova to distract herself. It's deliberate busy work that exists just so Nova doesn't feel burnt out by her mission.
yeah i was thinking more Dreamcast myself as well, there's also something about the color palette and camera movement in cutscenes that reminds me of Xenogears oddly enough
The shadows might be one of the things that pushes it to looking a little more Dreamcast like, and the edges of the models aren't as jagged as a PS1 game. Still the aesthetic overall definitely screams the late 90s to early 00s in some degree. Another great game with that type of purposely retro 3D look is Dusk, an FPS that's on PC now and coming to Switch later which resembles a game running on the Quake engine. It's interesting to me how we're now at a point where purposely low poly and low res looking games are starting to become the new "faux retro" look that indies are using, IIRC even Yacht Club said they eventually want to make a "Shovel Knight 64" which looks and plays like an N64 3D platformer (they're still working on the final DLC for Shovel Knight at the moment, and said that before they tackle a 3D game they want to do a "Super Shovel Knight" first which looks and plays like a 16-bit game).

I think the cool thing about life is that it's capable of bringing forth a life form that can ponder upon the "meaning" of everything, to find "value" and "purpose" from where there might be none. Capable of forming perspectives that can view reality in all sorts of different ways. I think that's what gives life its value: the capability to define itself. Who said Nihilism is inherently negative? If nothing has any meaning, then that means you're free to find your own meaning in everything, to decide things for yourself instead of having someone else dictate for you how you're supposed to think and see things. None of that means anything either, so you're free to dismiss viewpoints, but to also care for them, care for the innately arbitrary things in life we observe and create. Lack of meaning is pretty liberating. Yes, I'm a big dork for philosophy and existential stuff. Feel free to ignore my ramblings.

Everything returns to dust. *SPOILERS* My whole Anodyne 2 experience was yelling "CAR MODE" every time I turned into the vehicle while jumping, trying to break the physics of the levels just to get THAT ONE CARD and 5 minutes later shrinking inside of a weird cat-looking creature to have a wholesome found-family moment. What a great experience.

I found a really cool out-of-bounds glitch in Center Sanctuary (where you don't normally have access to Ridescale). If you talk to the platform where you upgrade the Dust Prism with cards, press Left on the left stick, and press the Jump button to advance the dialogue box, you'll float into the air infinitely until you close the second dialogue box. Sometimes you get stuck along the wall of the room, but if you have the right angle then you can float through the roof of the Center Sanctuary. You can find a copy of the Center Sanctuary that's used for one of the endings of the game, as well as this really weird OoB structure that you can only see a part of from the Elevator. It fully has collision so you can walk on it. Very cool.

Spoilers I’ve read a lot of good theories and thoughts on the Nora segment, and I’m not sure if anyone else has said something like this, but: My personal take on the Nora segment, is that Nora being the real person represented through Nova indicates that Nora hasn’t actually failed to face her fears and anxieties that are holding her back on living her life. If New Theland is like The Land was for Yung in the first Anodyne, that is being an imaginary world meant to act as an escape from their problems and the stifling nature of the real world, then Nova breaking free of her shackles and carving out a life for herself where she makes her own decisions and learns from her own mistakes is a way for Nora to work through her anxiety and/or depression. The gargoyle representing these issues chasing Nora, and her retreating to a safe place is actually the events that happened before the game starts, and Nova was born to help Nora cope. But the fact that Nova succeeded in winning her independence means that the ending is happy for Nora too, because it gives hope that Nora will be able to find fulfillment and will be able to live with the things that have set her back in the past without buckling under the pressure of them. There’s hope that she can truly live, not just survive, in spite of the obstacles life throws her way. That’s just my theory and personal takeaway, though.
The first few minutes of your first video made me buy and play through the first game in a heartbeat. This game was a day one purchase for me. Hopefully, I'll have some time to play it amidst my thesis writing...Also, so happy to hear you mention Moon in this video, I almost bought it while I was in Japan but it was too pricy for me at the time T_T.
I gotta give Anodyne 2 some credit, I'm not partial to these abstract, artsy-fartsy games, but this one actually looks rather interesting. So interesting, in fact, that I actually skipped ahead of the spoilers you gave when you warned us too. I actually do wanna try this game and see it for myself. Man, to think I nearly wrote this one off.
The way you talk about this game is so fucking mesmerizing, really gives me a great idea of what it'd be like to play it. Shit, this might be the first time I actually take the time to play a video game from another review, especially since I don't play too many games anyways. Thanks Nitro for introducing me to these great games, you're awesome at what you do. :)
I've been excited for this game since its announcement, having played the first Anodyne back in 2015. I'm so happy it's turned out so great and I'm excited to play it. Then I'll come back and watch the rest of this video because I have a feeling I'll need to watch something to gather my thoughts on it.
AHHHHHHHH I DIDN'T KNOW YOU FOLLOWED THIS GAME AND PLAYED THE FIRST ONE. I was supposed to get it this week but sadly my friend couldn't get me the money for it but I'm glad that you did a vid on this game. I'm not even done with the first game but hearing all of the post game stuff sounds like fun. The fact that you're in the second is really cool too. Watching this made me super hyped to play it. @@chloepechlaner7806 Weird, I freaking loved that game. I thought it was amazing. Only complaint was that it started to feel like a hollow game experience when you notice the sorely lacking bosses. i'm glad you mentioned moon! idk if you know this but it's currently being localized and from what i've heard, it'll be complete in a few months. hope you get to play it and possibly do a video on it!
I was hoping you'd make this video!! Recently played through the first game and liked it so much I had to buy the second upon release. The plot and dialogue is even more bizarre and existential than in the first Anodyne. I'm totally entranced by this game, it's really quite fascinating, even if I have NO clue as to what's going on, half the time. If you happen to read this, Analgesic, you're wonderful and I'm in love with Anodyne 2!
I wonder if Anodyne is a representation of creative people in their 20s or 30s who are still unsure what they should with their futures and wanting to share their creative thinking and understanding in the real world though don't know they can have it come across. Which due to anxiety, long terms of solitude and little to no interaction with others, the individuals would begin start creating extreme complex of characters, lore, meanings, outcomes, their own self insertion and worlds compressed from the mix of the hivemind of the shared web and the individual's own subconscious mind. For example, it's if you are given a problem in a math book with a setting towards it thay you would have solve. However instead of finding the answer you would proceed by questioning the problem which would create another problem within the problem. Then repeat that process over and over and over again creating an invite problem that can never have a solved, only uncertainty. That's why creative individuals have a problem of trying to interpreted their thought process completely in the real world as it is in their subconscious, they just haven't found their solution to their explanation. It is something I'm completely plagued me for 8 years with at the age of 21. I'm uncertain of what my future is or even if I have a future. I'm uncertain on how I should interact with others familiar or not. I'm uncertain how I can fully convey what I perceive, what I felt, what I thought into physical being to share with others. It all leads back to uncertainty, but I hope that uncertainty will become a possibility maybe even a absolute certainty to the most difficult personal questions and problems to finally be answered so I can show that to the physical world.
I love your passion for this game and videogames as a whole, defiantly want to spread the word about this experience now! Your explanation at the end of supporting the creators directly is so sweet. This channel allows me to find and understand new prices of art like this and I’m so happy for that. Thank you Nitrorad.
Oh heck yeah, Anodyne 2 is out! You'll forgive me if I postpose watching this video for a bit, I'll be back eventually. :) In the meantime, thank you so much for putting so many great games on our radars. I wouldn't have played the first one without you (among several fantastic other titles whose discovery I owe only to your videos) and I'm very grateful for that!! /PS: Have you, or any of yall, played Even the Ocean, by the way? It's by the same dev, and while it's way more straightforward a story, I found its main gameplay gimmick really neat and well-implemented.
@@analgesicproductions I definitely did! Besides the gameplay proper, I could also really appreciate how lovingly crafted the art and environments were. It truly made the mission/return loop into a comforting routine and made it easier to understand the main character, who'd be going through that in earnest. Bought the game on Switch on its launch. Just finished it. Sorry for watching this video so late. I wanted to go in blind. And thanks for the heads up on both this game and the first. Great experiences.
i'm getting some serious PS2 vibes from this, much more so than PS1. going from anodyne 1 to 2 feels like as big of a leap as the one from ps1 to ps2 did, too. and that title screen. gorgeous!
Since watching the start of this video I was intrigued about these anodyne games, so I saved some money and played both of them. Dude! Both games are great but anodyne 2 knocked it out of the park. Just got to the endgame and it's great to see the way the game handles it. Can't wait to see if anodyne continues as a franchise. And man, I hope we ever get some insight on what that desertnpc thing was
Okay, the existential and philosophical waxings in this video tells me you NEED to play NieR:Automata if you haven't already. Seriously, it is ALL about that and it's such an amazing game.

As someone who's never owned a Microsoft console, I agree that more PC games need to have Dualshock button icons

@@aoyukinana Yes, Nabeshin is awesome
Always excited to see another Nitro Rad video! Interesting game, as always. I wasn't familiar with this one until now.
I've been excited for this game since its announcement, having played the first Anodyne back in 2015. I'm so happy it's turned out so great and I'm excited to play it. Then I'll come back and watch the rest of this video because I have a feeling I'll need to watch something to gather my thoughts on it.
I'm glad I found your channel. The Anodyne games turned out to be some of my favorite games ever.
This channel is my lifeline for finding games I need in my life that no one else is talking about.
Thank you.
I enjoyed your video too!
This low-poly, low-rez art style does a nice job capturing the feeling of dreams, somehow. I'll have to check this out for sure asap!
I mean, I for one, would put Nitro Rad in one of my games. Imagine him being a superboss in a Earthbound/LISA-esque RPG.
I would be glad to seeing that directly made pleae do not give up upon your dream buddy ^^
@@MineSlimeTV Oh pish posh! I can't even finish a comic, lol. But I'll be sure to keep on trying. :D
@Nitro
There’s a game called “Alice madness returns.” It’s a plat former game based off the Alice in wonderland book series. In the game her family dies and the plot continues after she’s sent to an asylum and wakes for her catatonic state. I think you would like to play it.
P.S this isn’t a request for a video I just think you’ll like the game
Wait has he NOT played Alice?
That game was horrible, if theres one he must review is the original american mcgees alice
@@bkmu I disagree that its terrible; it isnt as good as the original, but its still good.
Fun idea for a video, but I would prefer he play the original first so we can get his opinion on both games.
@@chloepechlaner7806 Weird, I freaking loved that game. I thought it was amazing. Only complaint was that it started to feel like a hollow game experience when you notice the sorely lacking bosses. Seriously, the first game has bosses, why does Return have no bosses?
Anyway, American McGee just said he is working on remastering those games. Maybe NitroRad can play the remakes?
A whole new parallel world within someone's molecules?

i'm glad you mentioned moon! idk if you know this but it's currently being localized and from what i've heard, it'll be complete in a few months. hope you get to play it and possibly do a video on it!
if you actually see this comment and are interested, there's a discord server of testers working on it right now. let me know if you want the link
3 years later and I've finally gotten around to beating this game, can't wait to watch the spoilers section!
2:15 2:22 The presentation of those psx jewel cases is glorious
Still appreciating that Metabee on your shelf. Any chance you talk about some of the Medabot games we got in the west, or the franchise in general?
I'm hoping for that as well. Loved Metabots.

16:22 Well, who knows? Maybe there's just one extremely hidden secret that we may never find, that's what's the most cool part of this game for me.
I love your passion for this game and videogames as a whole, defiantly want to spread the word about this experience now! Your explanation at the end of supporting the creators directly is so sweet. This channel allows me to find and understand new prices of art like this and I’m so happy for that. Thank you Nitrorad.
This game looks so interesting! Definitely gonna have to check this out. Excellent video as always. Always love seeing weird indie titles like this.
Did nitrorad review Brave, from PS2?
It was one of my favorite 3D platformers, and im so sad about not javing a sequel. Id love to see it reviewed
I'm glad you liked ETO! -Sean
@@analgesicproductions I definitely did! Besides the gameplay proper, I could also really appreciate how lovingly crafted the art and environments were. It truly made the mission/return loop into a comforting routine and made it easier to understand the main character, who'd be going through that in earnest.
That kind of care is a constant in your projects I feel, and it makes me all the more enthusiastic about being able to experience Anodyne 2.
thank you for bringing this game to the attention of more people out there... great work of art with a beautiful ost
Loved the video, Nitrorad! No matter whether your videos get 0 or 1,000,000 views, I'll be always be there to watch them. Don't worry about UA-cam's stupid algorithm.
Hope this game gets an expansion one day so it can be even more existential an mind melting, along with some more features and content.
2:45 Oh, moon! That's on Nintendo Switch now with an english translation! Everyone who's interested in Anodyne should give that game a shot.
I love mentions of partners in time in videos, I feel the game was very under appreciated.
The graphics look more like a mix of the resolution of Dreamcast, texture res and models of N64, and draw distances of PS2.
Also this sorta reminds me of The NeverEnding Story. A young person attempts to escape their real world problems via a sort of magical fantasy world, except instead of an ever changing book it’s a video game.
Another great video my dude!
This is the first time I held back from watching a Nitrorad video until playing the game myself, and I couldn’t be happier for it. Such a great game
Nitro you inspire me you make me want to review games that are unique and special underated
So glad to find a content creator who appreciates Anodyne!! Great video.
I have the habit to add every single free game i can put my hands on, and when i go to all the stores who have this game i realise that i already own it for like two months in epic games, you have no idea how happy i was in that moment
Anodyne 2 : Mario fucking dies
Really glad I have been watching youtube all day or I'd miss the upload, love your stuff man, glad to see more.from.ya
You've said you'll review LSD dream emulator like 30 times. When are you gonna do it?
Better question is HOW do you review LSD
Arc2301 that comment wasn’t super serious
@@terreausore2435 Nothing in their comment came off as ungrateful.
Is that a picture of a medabot on his wall?! Dude I love this guy!
This seems really interesting, thanks for bringing it to my attention!
I find it interesting, I found you over the last few days. Really cool channel. Your views per video are almost equivalent to the number of subscribers you have, you got a new one here btw, which is incredible. That means you have very good retention and I would hazard to guess most viewers are subscribers. That being said, the quality of these videos and the amount of work you put into them is incredible and makes me wonder why your sub count is so low.
Man I wish I could put my finger on why I love that kind of art style so much
I never heard of this game but thanks to your videos I got interested ;)
every single part of this games art design just looks so GOOD. man i'm dying to play it
This is like the one time I took the "wait till u play it advice" and actually skipped the spoilers. So color me interested.
Well, I’ll bow out at the spoiler section. You’ve really made me interested in this game. I just might have to check it out.
What a rad game! Very cool artstyle and the music is just SO GOOD
Glad I checked this out after completing the game. This is a great video!
I really need to check out these games. Thanks for the fantastic video!
What an ambitious sequel. It sounds like they took some of the creative ideas from the first game and ran with them.
Didn't even know the title theme was actually a remix of the original game! I went into reviewing the soundtrack for this game completely blind, and now I wonder if there's any other callbacks I missed, cos I haven't even checked the original's, yet!
4:20 Thank you so much, I’ve had that problem for years, it so nice hearing someone else say it
Just got back after finishing the game. 8 hours just to watch a nitro rad video.
Bought the game on Switch on its launch. Just finished it. Sorry for watching this video so late. I wanted to go in blind. And thanks for the heads up on both this game and the first. Great experiences.
I'm back after playing the game, now i can finally finish watching this video.
I keep rewatching this video and I don’t know why
i'm getting some serious PS2 vibes from this, much more so than PS1. going from anodyne 1 to 2 feels like as big of a leap as the one from ps1 to ps2 did, too.
and that title screen. gorgeous!
Thank you so much for recommending such an amazing game!!!!!!! It's one of the best games I have played recently!! Could not put it down at all.
I come back to this review a year later to find out there's a console port! I'm super excited to play it on switch!
I gave this game a shot before getting into the spoiler part of the video, and MAN was it worth it! This game is such an underrated gem!
Having played this *forever* after playing the first game, I never even realized how many callbacks it has.
Anodyne 2 screams PS2 era to me and i love it. It makes me feel like a kid again.
The games and analysis you review encourages me to try and create a game.
The moment I saw Shesez cover the Easter egg featuring him and Nitro I knew we were getting this video soon
Grabbing this on the Switch in the next few weeks, excited to play it after watching this ❤️
The second I got the email out the release I knew the this video would be released.
So happy to finally see this review!
