I am 76 years old and this song has always captured the haunting sorrow and mystery about Billy Joe. When the song first came out many of us young people thought maybe they threw their premature baby to its death. What else could make a man that young take his life? I've heard this song hundreds of times over the years and it always sad. You could almost see hurt watching Bobby Gentry sing it. I always thought it was obvious that she and Billy Joe were lovers. The casual conversation, at the dinner table, underscored her profound and unspoken pain of loss.
