My goodness man, you're such a life saver. I'll be using this in my thesis project, and my professor hasn't taught me how to use it. Now, I feel like I have the knowledge and power to handle it. From the bottom of my heart thank you for doing this, and you are doing great work.
Exactly what I needed. I've had my machine for months but been too busy with shift work/family/misc to spend any quality manual time with it. I have actually scheduled a day off between now and my next shoot in order to get to grips with some of my new sound kit (specifically the 664 and some Lectrosonics radios) but you have saved me some headscratching by laying it all out like this. Having spent five years booming to a Zoom H4n the 664 and whatever unfathomable functions its myriad switches, menus and sockets represented looked daunting. Now that you've deftly demystified it I am looking forward to the shoot next weekend.
Excellent… Thank You…. Love the 664 video, Would like to see the 633 video done in the same style. Your comments about how different features are used really adds value to your productions.
Thank you so much for this great video it's really helpful, I was just hoping to see another one with boom and radio microphones too, so I get to understand more about the routing process, keep it up the good work, bravo.
Matt Price Soundrolling thank you for your answer I just worked with the 664 for the first time in a drama tv film and it was a good experience, your videos were very useful and helpful.
Thank you so much! I really needed this! Coming from a zoom h6 to a 633 was very confusing, but this was exactly what I was looking for. The info from other channels and google all asume you know the basics about this device - but I didn't, im new to the soundfield :D
Hi Matt. It's very good tutorial. Can you make the same that includig from setting mic to connecting it to 664 and can you explain when to use line and when to use mic. Can you tell me is it necessary to turn fader off & ON in group discussion artist project? Or we can leave all fader in ON position so that we can see the overlapping of dialogue of artist in VU metre.
Thanks a lot for sharing and this is a very nice overview for sound production mixers working on such a recorder. i am Roland User R88 and r-44 R-4pro and i recently bought the sound devices 688 any links to help ?
Hello Matt, do you think it's still a good purchase a 664 or would you save the money and get the 688 later? I was more between the 633 and the 664 because of the jobs I do (shorts and some commercials). What do you think? Should I get a 633 and when I have to use more than 6 channels like often change to an 688? Or get an 664 for $3000 second hand?
Matt Price Soundrolling Thanks Matt. Why Sound Devices just don't have 2 units like Zaxcom? Do you work on small gigs? Go for the Maxx, you need more? Go for the Nomad. I need 3-4 channels most of the time but it doesn't mean I will not need 6 or more channels soon, buying the 664/688 instead the 633 will give me 6 nice pre amps and limiters, only having 3 preamps and limiters with the 633 works also perfect right now for me but maybe in like 6 months in need more and I don't trust the digital limiters on channels 4-6... this is a nightmare! Haha. 664 second hand for $3000 vs 633 brand new $3000, fight!
Great video, a lot of questions answered for me in regards to the recorder. I do have a question about the ideal level of dialog in this particular set up. Do you want the peaks of the dialogue to be hitting 0 on the metering (-20dbFS) or is it more ideal to have the RMS be hitting at 0 on the metering?
Thanks for the tutorial! Quick question. When you record is there a setting you have to change to make each record each input on a separate file or does it do that automatically?
Hi Matt, I'm having a little trouble with a 688. The ISO levels are higher than the MIX, do you have any idea about what can be causing it? Thanks for all your usefuk work, cheers!
Must be fader placement, limiter settings or if you click the left spin wheel that selects tracks when on the mix track you might see an orange number in a negative value. Turn the dial to get it back to zero
hey, what's your battery life with 1 swit and the recorder? I use an F8 with a power bank adapted from usb to hirose and I had two days of shoot out of it. £50 in total

This is the most intuitive video I’ve ever watched thank you.

Hi Matt, thanks for this. Are you still planning a full course? Perhaps one with the 688 now that it's out and you use/have it?
Fezedi Will be putting up the 688 one in June :)
Matt Price now looking more like August :)

Hi Matt, Thank you so much for the explicit explanation. is it possible you do a Crash Course on Sound Devices 688? Await your reply.
Yeah ill try to get to one if i get a few hours free :)
Okay. Thanks. I will look forward to it. Cheers!!!
tricky to find time when im on this feature :)
I will patiently wait until you find time. Thanks and I wish you all the best!
Around 3:40 Did you mean that you don't find post fader iso useful? i.e. you like to work with just the gain?
Thanks a lot for sharing and this is a very nice overview for sound production mixers working on such a recorder.
i am Roland User R88 and r-44 R-4pro and i recently bought the sound devices 688 any links to help ?

+Manuel Lopez depends on your long term goals :) buy once cry once is better in the long term
+Manuel Lopez 664 is still a very good buy but depends what you need from your mixer / recorder

0 is what you want for normal level dialogue :)
Thanks for the tutorial! Quick question. When you record is there a setting you have to change to make each record each input on a separate file or does it do that automatically?
UnfundedFish wav mono will give you mono files of each inpuy
Hi Matt, I'm having a little trouble with a 688. The ISO levels are higher than the MIX, do you have any idea about what can be causing it?

ace, thank you
Hello Matt! does choosing the wav mono option means I get to record discrete tracks?
Yeah but i would do Poly files as standard. It will record anything record-enabled
In the menus, you mentioned that it's possible to pace mic info in the metadata. Does this allow one to assign a mic name to a specific channel?
+Rob Dunfy no just comment on general mic use
you use the comments for the names of the channels for that on the next take
great. now do the zax maxx
How do u set the automix function on the 664 ? Is it possible ?
Automix is only available in the 688 and 633.
hey, what's your battery life with 1 swit and the recorder? I use an F8 with a power bank adapted from usb to hirose and I had two days of shoot out of it. £50 in total
+Andrea Cremonini when it was new I got about 7/8 hrs again depending on use of inputs etc..
Can you record .wav on 1 card and .mp3 on another (or even the same card)?
Different cards yes :)
Matt Price Is there USB A or C connectivity?
