  • My interest in history goes hand in hand with my model building hobby.
In this video I am looking at Operation Vengeance - the longest interception mission flown in WW2. After discussing this key turning point in history, I'll show my build of the Tamiya 1:48 P-38 'Miss Virginia' Lightning
If you are interested in Operation Vengeance, I recommend:
Lightning Strike by Donald A. Davis
Attack on Yamamoto by Carroll V. Glines

Nice work on your P-38 model. Just purchased and downloaded (e-book) "Operation Vengeance" by Dan Hampton. It appears (from wikipedia), there was an asymmetrical external fuel tanks loadout in this mission ".....All of the P-38 fighters mounted their standard armament of one 20 mm cannon and four .50-caliber (12.7 mm) machine guns, and were equipped to carry two 165-US-gallon (620 l) drop tanks under their wings. A limited supply of 330-US-gallon (1,200 l) tanks was flown up from New Guinea, sufficient to provide each Lightning with one large tank to replace one of the small tanks. The difference in size put approximately 1,000 pounds (450 kg) greater weight on one side of the aircraft, but the tanks were located close enough to the aircraft's center of gravity to avoid serious performance problems." Great video and background. I appreciate your desire to recreate history. The book which you mentioned, Operation Vengeance, by Dan Hampton is excellent. Hampton is a former f16 pilot who flew in the 1st Gulf War. His first book, Viper Pilot, details his experience. Operation Vengeance is unique (I think) because it gives the perspective of a modern pilot's look at a WWII era plane and operation.

Later this year Tamiya is supposed to release a J version of the P-38, and supposedly will have decals for Marge.
