    My wife came home and said her wipers on her car stopped working. I found the wipers almost hanging off the car. haha I thought at first the wiper motor was shot but found a plastic bushing was bad on one of the metal arms that hooks to the wiper motor.

    I drilled a small hole through the side of both the bushing and the ball it sits on.....the arm will not pop off anymore. All it cost me was pennies for a cotter pin.

    Anybody with an Equinox that has this problem needs to file a complaint with the NTHSA. So far, only the 2013 Equinox has the recall with the exact same wiper transmission. Canada has a recall for all the Equinoxs with this problem. Not here in the United States. If enough people complain to the NTHSA about this problem, they will inform Chevy to recall all of these.

    Thanks for the awesome video! Dealer wanted $350 for the repair on my 2012 Equinox. Only the 2013 is under GM recall currently. I bought the entire ACDelco 84241847 GM Original Equipment Windshield Wiper System Module that included the motor for $67 from Amazon. Original GM part and exact fit, just plug and play no messing around with the press fit connections. Did have a bit of trouble removing the wiper arms but should have had them lifted up to relieve the spring tension when pulling off. Otherwise no issues, just needed to run the wipers to set up the correct wiper position before locking down.

    I recently replaced mine. Got a good deal from Partsgeek. Wife found it for me and it came with a 2 year warranty.
    I tried finding Bushings but no luck. Bushings for this model car seems impossible to find. There is a drop down menu that tells what Model, Make and Year they will fit.
    That said, this video helped me see how to disassemble. Took me a bit over 1 hr as I am a rookie and took my time. Garages wanted 350 dollars. I spent around 100 for replacement assembly and a kit that has Clip removal tool and spare clips.
    This really is an easy job to do, thanks for the video.

    Well, all I can say is that if it were metal parts with nuts and bolts this would never happen. Ya the bushings didn't work for me either. Was just gonna buy new from ebay, gmc dealer wants $145.00 $150.00 for new linkage, what an incredible waste of money but I gotta say the 2010 chevy equinox LTZ I have has been one fix after another. Pistons and rings air conditioner back up camera in mirror rear hatch door motor headlight socket wires falling out. Id take my 2000 gmc Jimmy over this any day and it had way more perks and accessories. Chevy sucks!

    So, here's the deal with these little bastards. At the factory, they got some machine that fits those bushings into the hole of the linkage bracket. Putting them in by hand, even with a vice and sockets is damn near impossible. The plastic tabs always push backwards instead of squeezing to fit into the hole. Once that happens, the bushing is ruined. I went through 4 of these before I found a solution. Take a dremmel tool and just lightly bevel out the edges of the hole on the bracket. Bevel the one side only where you are inserting the bushing. That bevel will allow the plastic tabs to easily squeeze through instead of getting stuck and pushing backwards. Once the bushing is in, you need to gently squeeze the tabs tight with a pair of plyers. Otherwise, it won't stay on the ball attached to the motor. It will just easily pop off. DO NOT USE GREASE OR ANY OTHER LUBRICANT EITHER! That just makes it easier to pop off. I actually wiped off all the old grease that was on it to ensure a snug fit, but there's still a thin layer to keep it moving smoothly. I hope this helps. Once again, GM has amazed us with it's poor design issues and given me yet another reason not to buy them. Good luck!

    Oh yeah and every damn gm sad we bailed them out now they build crap!
    Mine is a '11 the other day the nut that connects the motor and transmission fell off yes I said fell 📴! 14' weather and sleet hail not the best scenario.
    Be sure to time it before you put it all together or you might have to buy a on/off relay.... don't ask me how I know🙄.
    It's apparently been a problem before because there was only 2 clips in front holding the cowl on.
    I used a 90' long nose pliers to assist with removing the arms. ( One could use a nail Bar as well).
    Note to others mine didn't have markings because the curved one goes on the passenger side.
    Other than that it's the same.
    Update: thought I had it fixed didn't see the spleen's gone on the arm I was in too big a hurry I guess.
    I I'm off to buy another motor and transmission 😡 shame on you GM.

    I guess I should have read your update. But I have not had a chance to test my wipers since I purchased the bushings and installed it. So maybe you might be able to help me out or the community might be able to help me. I took the motor of the transmission mount and unscrewed the nut holding the transmission. If i do not put this back on correctly will I have wiper alignment issues? Right now when I run my wipers the wipers go up to the top position and pause just short of the full range, then they go back down, and dip below where they rest, then come up slightly and stop. When I have both wipers on the linkage will come undone again. So with both wipers on now and they go to the start position, the driver wiper will impact into the passenger causing the linkage to pop out of place. I think I should have never taking the transmission nut off.
    Hey UP DIYer do you have any more equinox fix videos. I too bought one of these cars and I really love it but I want to get things fixed with it. BTW its from the lower Peninsula

      Upper Peninsula DIY what is crazy about this very common issue is that GM makes you buy the whole entire transmission. They do not sell the bushings. A 5 minute fix and couple dollar part for over 100 dollars.

    • @UpperPeninsulaDIY
      @UpperPeninsulaDIY  7 років тому

      I found that out as well. Went to my local GM dealer and the only way to get it is the entire assembly with even a new wiper motor. You can imagine the price tag on that... I can get one from Napa but it is made by Dorman, which I'm finding they don't make that great of products. Plus the Napa one is almost the same price as the one from GM.

    I think you did the bushing backwards and the reason why it was so hard. The BACK (the head) of the bushing has to be pushed through the hole of the arm using the vise. So vise then bushing opening, then arm hole, and 19mm socket to push it through. Snaps right in

    Dorman has changed the part!!! Same part number, but it is now 2 half shells that fit over the "knob" and bolt together. I found them at O'Rileys autoparts.... www.oreillyauto.com/detail/dorman-help--4422/wiper-blade-motor-16494/linkage-kits-17610/wiper-linkage-clip-kit/49444/4528521/2010/chevrolet/equinox

      dont remove the old bushing..you need it as a spacer in the throat of the rod. use a hacksaw and cut off the top portion (the cap). Press the knob onto the rod and use this part to secure the "knob". Make sure you git the little tab down into the bushing to help the fit. I used a pair of vise-grips to hold the 2 shells together while I bolted them up.....Good Luck!

    The wipers went out while my pregnant wife was driving in a torrential downpour and I was out of town...now I will see if I can fix it, otherwise I have to take it to the shop tomorrow to have it worked on as we cannot go with only one vehicle. To hell with the dealerships, I will not bring it there for any reason other than recalls (which this should be covered by, but isn't because they say it isn't a safety issue).

    • @UpperPeninsulaDIY
      @UpperPeninsulaDIY  7 років тому +1

      +J Rap Sorry to hear this has happened to you also and at the most inconvenient time. I hear ya, GM should be doing something about it because it sure as hell is a safety issue. Don't follow my advice in this video though. I'm working on an update video to this one because the bushing fix didn't work. Go to your dealer and buy the transmission assembly. My dealer said it costs about $150 bucks. Then you can swap it out yourself. That's the only good fix in my opinion. Good luck buddy! Also, congrats on the new baby!

    • @UnWrapWJRap

      Upper Peninsula DIY thanks, I already got the bushings from autozone, hopefully it will be a temp fix...for at least a few weeks or so. The auto industry is a sham. I'm sure there is some other way to fix it, I'm just not mechanically inclined as most, haha.

    • @UnWrapWJRap
      @UnWrapWJRap 7 років тому +1

      Upper Peninsula DIY So I installed it...and 10 minutes later is came off. I really don't want to buy the entire set when I only need a plastic bushing. If this wasn't the car my wife drives when I am not driving it, I would wait for a better alternative...if there is one.

    • @UpperPeninsulaDIY
      @UpperPeninsulaDIY  7 років тому +1

      +J Rap Bummer... mine did more or less the same thing. Thought I had it fixed and sure enough the first rain storm it came apart again. In my opinion replacing all the bushings won't work because most of the bushings are made by dormin and they don't work. Even if you get a used transmission assembly from a junk yard your probably asking for the same problem. Just have to bit the bullet and get the assembly from your gm dealer. My wife is getting by with it for now by only turning on the wipers when the windshield is wet. I switched the arm around on the assembly so the bad bushing is on the upper side of the transmission and not the lower hooked to the motor. I'm not sure which is bad on yours though. Hopefully this helps you out a little. Thanks for coming back and sharing what you found.

    • @UnWrapWJRap
      @UnWrapWJRap 7 років тому +3

      Maybe I will do that too. Mine broke in exactly the same spot as yours. I had to special order the entire assembly from Chevy/GM...$115. Also, I called GM to file a complaint and gave them my vin number and had them send me an electronic receipt. If there is ever a recall (there is for other years, but not the 2011 for sure), they will refund me. EVERYONE WITH THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO CALL GM AND FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THEIR VIN NUMBER SO THEY WILL MAKE IT A RECALL ITEM!!
