We’ve all had those moments where we wish we could think of something funny to say, but our mind goes blank. It can be frustrating, especially when you’re talking to someone you really want to like you.
So in this video, we’ll go through 4 easy ways you can make people laugh and love being around you. We’ll do this by breaking down some clips from the king of sarcasm, Ryan Reynolds.
Some people mistakenly think this type of sarcastic humor makes you an a**hole, but when done properly it can instantly make people like you more.

Anyone else think it's incredible how we can hear a series of words and instantly comprehend it and within less than a second produce an emotion and express it, completely out of our control, with zero thought?
A whole book could be written on just what happens when we hear a joke and laugh.

You can't do it can you? It's crazy how we were born unable to read but now we can't not read.
Theoretically, if you did anything enough times, it would become literal second nature and you would have no control over it.

Having met a few pro comics I've tended to find that because they enjoy and appreciate humour they tend to understand jokes better than most people, if you kind of fluff the joke they still get where it meant to go and see the funny bit of it where people who don't do jokes for a living miss it.

Physical humor is also really underrated. Being more expressive with your body language, making a goofy face, changing your intonation -- all can make a huge impact on your delivery.

During one job interview I was asked if I had ever been convicted of a felony. I replied, 'nothing that ever stood up on appeal.' I started laughing, then she started laughing. I explained how Carla said that about her children on an episode of Cheers. It turned out that she loved the show Cheers. She hired me.

I got hired because I looked like a school marm, but during the interview I guess I made a rude/suggestive comment or joke and revealed my self to be a dirty old lady in disguise! Hired ON THE SPOT! Just be yourself, the others might catch on. Good on 'em if the do!

Ryan is very likeable and very funny. I'm betting he's as humorous as he is because he goes through every day thinking humorous thoughts to himself. So in front of an audience his mind is already stockpiled with witty comments, they're a reflection of his affable personality.
You nailed it! I'm a lead singer in a punk rock group and I often crack my audience up with funny little stories about my wife and kid in between songs. Later though, at home I'm pretty much in the doghouse all the time, getting the cold shoulder from my wife. My daughter also seems untrusting and I find her often looking at me with suspicious eyes when we are together in car rides and she thinks I'm watching the road. Oh well, too bad they don't accept my affable personality the same way my loyal fans do. I'm not gonna change who I am because of a few close family members who don't get me.

It's funny how that I do most of these things already. I have Asperger's, which I found out as an adult (oh the joy of realizing why I was a "strange" kid), and having such I was always in an awkward position in communicating with my peers. I quickly learned that humor and sarcasm made people like me and I felt less awkward. Often times I made myself the brunt of the joke, which made people laugh harder. I was asked one time, "You know they're laughing 'at' you and not 'with' you, right?" I replied, "No, they are laughing with me. I introduced the joke, I set it up and delivered it. I know it was about me, but it made everyone laugh which was my main goal. So, you see, they are laughing with me and not at me." Great video, thanks.
I also use self-deprecating humor a lot. They're laughing with you laughing at yourself.

I'm an instructor and when I teach adults I always find it hard to connect considering I'm very childish. Ironically after watching your videos, I can be childish all the time and they love me more for being childish than being mature. Thank you so much for your help

@@krisvq that's fair, I normally come off as childish but ultimately until we meet there's no way to know the extent. Ryan has been extremely helpful in channeling the fun-loving nature j try to exude into a charming presence and I appreciate him for it
every adult is still a child inside, if your showing childish frivolity and your adult customers feel comfortable and like it, they will start doing it as well. The best type of interactions are sometimes acting like a kid, because the other person will feel at ease, because your being you and your have taken your guard down, they can do the same
real-life example a few weeks back: i talk via teams to a group of ppl who are our clients. we are talking about a bill volume of 6 or even 7 digits for the project that THEY will spend with us (we will do the job). I am the guy who is going through all the requirements with them... checking if everything is thought out, make suggestions on how to achieve X and Y etc.
now, my headset is somewhat broke, has a loose wire and so sometimes the mic drops... so it happend again, they already knew abou it and were just like "oh alex, your mic again..." -- so i clap the mic a few times until the sound is back and then i am like "ah damn, i really need a new headset... alexa! order me a new headset [i wait deliberatly 2 secs] ... i just realized, i don't have alexa" ... group is having a good time... back to topic of 7 digits volume. it is way not the only joke i brought up, i even made some jokes regarding their CEOs and so (would be too long to elaborate) -- we are really on good terms, i like them, i've been told in other, higher-up meetings, me and a colleague of mine who is working on this aswell are reported there as a pleasure to work with. i must say, of course there is also competence in the field, after all they are not there to be entertained but to get a multi-country online store up and will have to perform at least at the current level... but i'd say that they appreciate being entertained at the same time ;)
i don't know if you really need that advice, so i'll write it down just for the general audience: emotions help with learning. that's why frontal teaching is so ineffective (it is pretty boring to listen to somebody and just inhale the knowledge). however, you can make sure that ppl keep the important parts when you make them connect emotionally to what you are saying, so that they have this additional reference. so put something important around a funny story for example that make ppl laugh and later, instead of refering to the topic directly, just refer to something from the joke and voila, ppl also remember the actual topic behind it -- just be sure not to make the whole meeting a laughing stock, in that case you are just entertaining, not teaching :)

He is good at trained network television humor. Most of the hosts of those shows are actually laughing in relief because he is playing along and they don't have to work with realistic, unscripted answers. Those are definitely the types of answers they want because he keeps things in the outer bubble of his true opinions, which the TV hosts prefer as well. The TV show hosts actually hate it when the celebs get all realistic and dark. It's usually random and hard to work with, especially if the answer wasn't engaging the audience.

You’re not gonna be able to win people over and the people you do will respect your mind, humor and thoughts. you’re confident enoughto say your thoughts in a clear direct manner, confident enough to understand that not everything you say will get the reaction you want, and strong enough to not take things to heart
Do the loud part, skip the sarcastic attempts at humor.
To be fair, I'm an introvert and often loud. I learned a long time ago that there is vulnerability in being a wallflower. Being loud and dominating the conversation and general mood of a space affords the power to control the actors in that space. So, as an introvert, I can do more to proactively control my (emotional) distance by being dominant rather than quietly hoping only social interactions that I find comfortable occur.

@@missy9279 Just study other introverts who are very likeable, like Keanu Reeves. That way, you can remain authentic. Also, "if you're not willing to be a fool, you can't be a master". I frequently can make the whole room laugh, but sometimes: I just get crickets. Like rejection, you just kind of have to become comfortable with that. Not everything you do, is going to be a hit.

Often witty humor is experienced within your family environment and it develops as you grow up. Some people have this natural ability and never think about it. The best comes from you when you are in the moment. Trying too hard will only get you rolling eyes. I never realized there were courses to learn this.
People ask me "do you like kids?"

My friend (let's call him Bob) often exaggerate a lot about how bad his life is as a joke. I introduced it to my other friend (let's call him Jake) and he did this kind of jokes. Later, Jake complained to me how Bob seem to have the worst life in the world and that it was not pleasant to be with him. I was quite surprised, I didn't think anyone would take Bob's jokes seriously. Personally I like when Bob does this kind of jokes but hey maybe careful with this.
imo, it’s not fun to be around people who only complains about their life. their negativity can be exhausting and it may seem like their looking for attention/pity. rather than complain about their live a lot, i would rather see someone do something about it. life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change.

This could really be due to the specific of two groups mixing.
If you are with your group of friends, people knowing your sense of humour, you do not need to put heavy signals while being sarcastic, while if you are with new people it is necessary to signal sarcasm more clearly. At the same time, on the receiving end, if you are new in a group you tend to make less assumption and you will be looking more carefully for potential sarcasm.
However, this was a peculiar situation: Bob, You, and Jake. Both Bob and Jake feels they are majority: Bob and You, that's 2 over 3. You and Jake, that's also 2 over 3. Improvising an ASCII Venn's diagram (1[1)1]. Bob is used to the fact you know his sense of humour, and he does not feel he has to put strong signals. Jake knows your sense of humour, and he is not expecting the new guy not to follow what he perceives as the "group routines". It's very easy to have misunderstandings in those (1[1)1] situations.
You know, I'm not gonna lie, I typically don't give these videos much thought. Just watch them for fun.
This one? Hilariously enough, super true. I've tried it out a couple times now with the extravagant sarcasm and the subverting expectations in a joke, and it has never failed to get very good reactions

I go to the same school as Samuel and he's one of those annoying people who is constantly trying to be funny by awkwardly inserting his premeditated/rehearsed stories, acting as if they were off the cusp antic dotes, much like Ryan Reynolds does on his little talk show visits. Of course, Ryan Reynolds' audience has a "Laugh" sign to help make his BS sound funny, but not Samuel Merkel. Sam just pretty much makes others around him cringe non-stop.

One tip that I find particularly useful is remembering key words, phrases or aspect from the other person's story, and then adding it in at the right time when they are talking creating a funny fake end to their story. This not only creates a funny moment, but also reinforces that you have paid attention to them, making you even more likable!

For those who need to hear it: Not every social interaction is a performance.
These are paid entertainers doing their job. Paid to be there, paid to play along.
For the rest of us that means reading the room and knowing your audience. If you don't know your audience; its better to be forgotten as the quiet fool than it is to be remembered as the try-hard tool.
Not to mention the whole concept of "how to make people like your made-up character that you found instructions for on UA-cam". It's quite worrying to take such measures for the sake of "making people like you".
I totally agree with both of u .. its almost offensive theres a "charisma university" charging you money to help u be a con artist.. im sure 90% of the customers are predators trying to trick ppl into dating them before they realize there with an abusive sociopath..
Oh and one more thing, there aDvertising budget was all dedicated to 10 clips of Ryan Renolds in televised interviews.. im sure scripts arent allowed in these settings with talk show hosts...

Ryan is the only Actor that doesn't break from the same act of being him and still makes every movie feel like his a different character. I always enjoy watching movies by him because his sarcasm and humor is one of the best.
If you go back to the days of the old Studios in Hollywood it was all about personality and not necessarily great acting chops. That is, stars were built out of their own personalities and they developed great acting abilities based on themselves. So the biggest stars became brands, using aspects of their core personalities. You can get great performances from actors with range but most are a familiar brand. We accept different James Bond actors only if they play him as themselves and can make Bond believeable. Movie stars always play to their own brand.

The best way of acquiring a pro level of sarcastic humor is to learn it as a life-saving coping mechanism when you get bullied at school.
Me to. I got the last laugh, my quick one liners and sarcastic replies are now legendary with my friends and, colleagues at work and I can get a laugh out of almost any subject or situation. I'm now well liked and respected, thank you school bullies!

Ppl would say I’m funny and I became that way as a defense mechanism in 2nd grade when I went to a new school. It started for other ppl, but over time, it turned to something I do to entertain myself. I tell ppl, u think I do this for attention, but I really do it because I find it funny. I feel like I have the same type of personality. Hyperbolic, animated, sarcasm is my go to.
Two huge problems with this advice: They're using an already-well-liked celebrity to try to teach a technique that works for him regardless, because of who he is. Using celebrities isn't at all representative of real-world situations. And two, a biggie: a ton of people simply don't expect any kind of sarcasm, or so often will not "get it," in many social situations; they're expecting a certain level of cordiality as the accepted behavior, and to go outside of it will work *only* for those who have a ready sense of humor...which a TON of people simply do not have.
Countless people do not simply default to humor in interactions with others. Again, it's just not the common mode of behavior for social situations which a lot of people find stressful on some level or another. Some people _do_ have the humor default setting, the more relaxed easy-going people, but how many of those do we find these days.
That and these interviews, they have much of the questions ahead of time and have an outline already, needles to say some are much better at it than others!

Usings will smith's scene from the pursuit of happiness when you were speaking of building a strong enough connection that the person wants to see you again is SO gosh darn relatable because I also feel like crying with happiness when I finish a conversation without making it awkward
I played by this book for say 4 decades. Now in my 50s I have no friends, my grown up kids will not talk to me and my wife tolerates me because she doesn't want to end up alone. At least my dogs and cats still love me.
Was there a comedic pause before the punchline?
I find that 1-2 beverages into a social gathering , my wit engages without fear of judgement. My spiritual gift of sarcasm weaves in & around others during conversation. So much fun to see others shake with laughter when they're involved with the set-up. Have to keep reined in enough to make it fun, nonthreatening, and a wee bit self-deprecating.
It can be a bit tricky during church socials since I'm protestant. I find a fake Irish accent helps when you're reading Job aloud. An Irish brogue "Gird up your loins like a man." is humor gold to we women.

Great tips! I agree that Ryan Reynolds is a great one to study for his sense of humor. I would say that these clips are when he is in front of a crowd, and he would probably not hit with so many zingers if he was at dinner with a new friend for instance. Big funny energy is good for a big gathering.

The ppl there were older and good friends. They were just cracking jokes making fun of each other about evthing and anything.
It really got me in the mood, and i joined in.
Ended up being 1 of the funniest nights, we laughed so hard.

The greatest thing about the way this is is the way that it explains how when you go to the extreme of explaining the proliferation of how this type of situation is understandably . I went to a job interview. It was a panel interview with about eight people. I was seated at the head of a conference table. After the last person arrived and the door was closed, before anyone said anything, I said, "The reason I've called you all here today . . ." Everybody cracked up, and then they interviewed me. I'm not saying it was my humorous icebreaker that did it, but at the end of the interview I was offered the job. 😁

I have a hard time separating him from his roles in the John Hughes era. He was protrayed as a spineless slime ball, the original trustafarian who just blindly protected his social status. Know it's fictional, not who he was/is, but it defined him for a long time. Guess I should give him the B.O.D. & really watch Blacklist. That many seasons must mean something.

My problem isn't with making jokes or getting people to laugh, it's after that when it's time to get closer and changing an acquaintance to a friend. I really feel comfortable being a joker and performing, but I'm not really sure how to go from that to being personal.

I know you guys already did a video on Aubrey Plaza but could you guys do an in-depth analysis on her and how she is hilarious but is able to keep her mystery at the same time unlike other funny celebrities like Cardi B or Jennifer Lawrence who are also likeable but they aren't mysterious. The fact that more people know Aubrey Plaza from her interviews than the actual film work she's done is definitely proof her charisma trait is something worth diving into !!

The thing you're forgetting here, he's naturally funny and charismatic. Its a talent he was born with and does for a living at the highest level. If you try to force a type of personality you are not you'll come off fake and trying to hard and people will like you less. The thought that you can be as funny and charming as Ryan Reynolds with "practice" is a flawed one.
Instead, how bout you be yourself, find the people that like you as yourself and laugh at the jokes that already come naturally for you and hang out with those people.you'll be much happier than practicing hard to be somebody else in all social situation to find "friends" that you have to act for every time. sounds exhausting.
Thats what step 4 is for... Focus on self amusement. If you're not having fun and treating like work it's not going to be a good time

Charisma and charm can be learned. But you don’t need to have the charisma of Ryan Reynolds. Just start practicing social skills. Have more conversations with people and try to correct yourself after each step of the process, remembering always that you will not win everyone, and you should not to. With time, you will found a natural charisma of you, a charisma that will not be necessarily equal of the Ryan Reynolds, but yes a charisma that you are comfortable to, something that is not based on people’s opinions. Do that, and you will be in “charisma ville”.
He was born with it! Due to the planetary and celestial alignments at play at the time of his birth. Myself and anyone else I've met with a very similar birth chart to ours is naturally this way. However, it is not celebrated by everyone and in my case it is considered a character flaw and a behavioral disorder. So I agree with ya 100%.

It's best to work on liking yourself, so when you truly know who you are, that natural calmness will come and you will be relaxed enough to enjoy yourself in conversation with people. And, by extension, people will enjoy themselves in conversation with you. A nervous little person running around trying too hard to be memorable is a turn off.
When we were kids, our friend group would do drama class scene builds...for fun. So it became just like riding a bike, for all of us. You never forget.

Same here. I'm usually quiet in a group of people and just observe what's going on and being said. Then I'll interject what I think is a cute or mildly amusing comment and everybody laughs their heads off. I'm actually kind of shocked when that happens. I thought about doing stand-up comedy, but I can't write "funny"; I guess I'm only funny spontaneously. 😕

Then again, I’m also that person who when watching movies with others, gets strange looks because they don’t laugh when everyone else does; they laugh when something strikes them as funny, even though it doesn’t strike anyone else that way 🤦🏻♀️

Timing is VERY important. I grew up in a household where you had to be quick on your feet when it came to witticisms, one liners and come-backs. I was very good at it. Now I have a brain wasting disease and even though I still can think of a great zinger it's like I'm perpetually on a 2 second delay! Hubby picks on me and says, "That's the come-back from something I said ten minutes ago". It is great comedy fodder.
